IIVeaa aka 1Veertje removed a whole table of data

    What to do?

Suspect conflict of interest. Suspect hostile removal of data.

Objection to IIVeaa aka 1Veertje removed a whole table of data in the page of March Against Monsanto .

I spent 7 hours till 04:00 to do it and I had to sleep. And other poeople sure have also spend many good hours on top.

Does IIVeaa/1Veertje really want wikipedia work for the best of all people?

Or did IIVeaa/1Veertje just doing it for his own rules?

Does IIVeaa/1Veertje have stock or funds or interested or know anyone related to Monsanto & alike??

That article marked the event of fight against injustice establishment. Probably controversial where Monsanto-related parties GMO-related conglomerates will remove data they deem give them disadvantage.

This isn't really the place to complain about the behaviour of others. Not that it will do you any good complaining anyway. An unsourced list of participating groups 1775 words long [1] isn't even remotely acceptable as article content. This is an encyclopaedia, not a database. Find sources, and briefly summarise the material. AndyTheGrump (talk) 00:33, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Two of the policies of Wikipedia are Assume Good Faith and No Personal Attacks. By accusing another editor of working for Monsanto, you violated both. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:47, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
What he removed was not a "table of data". It was a very long and very repetitive list of countries and places, with no evident relevance to the article. Maproom (talk) 07:10, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Confusion in editing

I have never edited before and so I clicked REF in error when trying to correct some language and usage I found in the article about deceased Gen Dion Williams,USMC. I am tired of reading poorly written articles. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.211.23.217 (talk) 01:20, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted your good-faith edits that accidentally introduced a cite error in Dion Williams. You can go back and make the rest of your edits again, or can discuss the article content on the talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:33, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I have some problems with polish contributors to Wikipedia, about the book "The Pianist" published in 1998. They try to create wrong impression, that the book was written by someone else then Wladyslaw Szpilman - the author of the book, and telling us that it was only a memoir and not a book.

The best non-fiction book of the year 2000 named by many US newspapers should not be degradated to "memoir". Please refer to Wikipedia informations about this book in other languages.

Here only the link to amazon.com: http://www.amazon.com/The-Pianist-Extraordinary-Survival-1939-1945/dp/0312263767/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1366005008&sr=8-1&keywords=szpilman

First print of the book was elaborated by Jerzy Waldorff, as stated in every book printed also in the US by Picador/St. Martin Press.

There is also many errors in the description of the book and the plot is to long and contains many wrong informations.

But there is a group from Poland (Poland is very well known for it antisemitism) who try to destroy the image of the Jew -Wladyslaw Szpilman. It is by the way strange, when the name of the author in the text is different in the box, on the cover, in the bestselling book sold more then 5 000 000 copies worldwide, then in the text created by polish vandals. Please take a look on it. I can not fight polish antisemitism whole my life and engage in the discussions here on wikipedia.

So please correct the errors in your topic and please block it against of vandalism, as it happened to the thopic "Wladyslaw Szpilman" in Polish wikipedia. Thank you very much for your support in advance. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.223.35.119 (talk) 01:30, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can discuss on the article's talk page, or can correct the errors if you can provide reliable sources. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:52, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Correct - you should post at Talk:The Pianist (memoir). Please be very specific about what text in the article you object to; what you would like done (delete or change - and if change, then change to what). Even more importantly - you need to provide a reliable source to support your proposed change. It's not enough for you to just say you don't like something - you have to point to a source that supports your requested change. If you don't list a source, then the other editors have no idea if what you are saying is correct or incorrect. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 04:00, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Searching through code not displayed as text

In this edit, I fixed a link for which someone had made a typo when changing the link — it went to craftsman (diswambiguation), but the code was [[craftsman (diswambiguation)|craftsman]]. Is there a way to search for any/all pages that have links to Foo (diswambiguation) but display it as Foo? WhatLinksHere won't help, since I'm trying to find all targets that have been misspelled in this way, not simply the diswambiguation page for "craftsman". Nyttend (talk) 02:09, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WhatLinksHere does work on redlinked pages (Special:WhatLinksHere/Craftsman_(diswambiguation)). Does that help? — The Potato Hose 02:19, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Not really — I'm trying to find any link to ____ (diswambiguation), regardless of what comes before the parentheses. I can check for individual pages of course, but since I'm interested in what's literally an infinite number of possible links, it would be a waste of time to check this one, that one, the other one, etc. Nyttend (talk) 02:24, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Oooookay. So what you want is to build a list of all pages containing (diswambiguation), and then find everything that links to those pages, so as to fix them? Is that correct? And I'm assuming diswambiguation is just an example? — The Potato Hose 02:29, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Kind-of. I want to build a list of all pages containing (diswambiguation) so as to fix them; I only mentioned WhatLinksHere because it's a good way to find an individual page that contains it. Diswambiguation was just an example; I'm assuming a method to find diswambiguation links will equally be able to find other misspellings. Nyttend (talk) 02:55, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In this particular case there are none but the best way to find misspellings in my experience is to use Google. You drop a term, say from Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings, into Google and then use restricters in the search to limit to the mainspace SearchedTerm site:en.wikipedia.org -inurl:wiki-User -intitle:Talk -intitle:file -inurl:wiki-Wikipedia -inurl:wiki-WP -redirected-from Note also the existence of {{Google custom}}.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:22, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like a task for a bot. You may visit Wikipedia:Bot requests and ask for preparing such list for you, possibly in your user space (say, User:Nyttend/bad_dab_link_list). --CiaPan (talk) 06:12, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I found no occurrences of "diswambiguation" in the 3 April 2013 database dump. Feel free to ask for searches on my talk page. I'll be downloading a new dump early next month. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:57, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Banned forum member trolling the company/product Wiki pages.

A member who was banned from a company product forum page is repeated removing up to date submissions, manipulating company criticism and amplifying negative articles them by copy/pasting identical bias information over company and product pages.

I have attempted to contact the user requesting they only add relevant, balanced information, however I am awaiting response.

You will notice 2 sections on the following links entitled 'criticism' (renamed from 'controversy' authored by the user). Both of these sections have been copy and pasted directly, with no edits to support relevance. I have edited this section on both page, removing non-product relevant information from the product page, and non-company relevant information from the company page.

    Company page: YoYo Games

    Product Page: Game maker

The person also keeps removing valid, technical information.

I would like to request that this person has limited access to both of the above Wiki pages, as this user has no intention other than promoting brand damaging, negative information along with bias, irrelevant disparage.

Here is the user's IP: 71.114.160.82

I would be very grateful if you could contact me regarding any action being taken to prevent this user from damaging the company image in retaliation to being banned from the community forum.

    Many thanks,

Jay — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jaymd 123 (talkcontribs) 09:54, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, please keep in mind that a "neutral point of view" may sometimes include negative information, and negative information, if properly sourced and relevant, isn't necessarily disparaging. And the responsibility of "prevent[ing] this user from damaging the company image" is no more my responsibility than it is yours. As for what you can do:
    1. Explain the rationale for your changes on the article's talk page.
    2. If the user continues to resubmit unsourced, biased information, ask him to stop.
    3. If the user persists, you might have a case at the Edit-warring noticeboard. Alternatively, you could report him to WP:AIV, but be sure to have a cohesive argument for why the edits constitute vandalism.
    4. You can also request page protection on the article.
These suggestions are made with the assumption that you do not have a conflict of interest, either by being employed by that company or working with them, etc. Hope some of that helps. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 21:41, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think that Jaymd 123 might also do well to bear in mind that there is no such thing as a 'company page' or 'product page' on Wikipedia. All pages are articles in our encyclopaedia, and nobody 'owns' them. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:57, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It would also help if Jaymd 123 could now step back from the article, as their edits are becoming a problem as well. "I have permission to copy and paste this" doesn't really cut it in the verifiability stakes. I will alert the WikiPedia Video games project to the problem and hopefully get some help to get the article battered into shape. - X201 (talk) 08:50, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Update: I have requested page protect for both Game Maker and YoYo Games. Both parties are edit warring over them and need to cool down. - X201 (talk) 14:38, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Need help with request for AFD on page

Needing help in figuring out how to request an AFD for a page (Edith Flagg) that is 1)ready for deletion because of non-notability, 2)Is locked on purpose to prevent anyone from changing it, and 3)isn't even written in a method that can be described as a paragraph, much less an article. Seems like the page is being allowed to stay up just for the sake of the person being able to say they have a page on wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Caffeyw (talkcontribs) 10:47, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edith Flagg has several paragraphs, more than a lot of our articles. It is only semi-protected so it can be edited by any autoconfirmed user, meaning a user account which is at least 4 days old and has made 10 edits. Special:Contributions/Caffeyw shows 6 edits so you only need 4 more. The article was kept at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Edith Flagg where several editors said keep. I see no support for your claim about why the page is allowed. It has been edited by many editors and I would be surprised if the subject is among them. She is 93. See Wikipedia:Articles for deletion if you want to nominate it again, but you would have to make a lot more sense than your post here. Have you made any attempt to examine her notability, for example by spending a few seconds entering her name in Google? If you make a nomination page and really want to nominate it before making a few more edits then you can click "View source" on the article and request an AfD tag is added to the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:42, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at the article, there's maybe three or four pieces of information. The footnotes section is clearly marked with articles that may at most mention her name. Some are display ads, some are articles where the only mention of her name is in a list of people at a hospital. The page is even marked as imparting no information of value. I have a hard time saying notable, when you have to go back to 1970s just to get an article that even mentions her name in it. Also note on the first AfD that it appears the same user kept voting for keep, and at one point it was even pointed out. Also I have googled her name, everything comes back with her being famous because of her grandson on Million Dollar Listing or because of an article he's penned on her without any third-party verification. If you watch the TV show, he even says on air that nobody knows about his grandmother, and that he would like that changed. I have a hard time thinking notable, when even your own grandson says no one knows about you. There's tons of articles out there that have my name mentioned in them, but that doesn't mean I'm notable, just that I was able to get my name on a list of people. Also note that on the talk page the information clearly shows a personal connection, and the username attached has the initials jdf which are those of her grandson. --Caffeyw (talk) 07:09, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was more content earlier [2] but the "Footnotes" section was without links and din't specify which part the notes supported. With sources like [3] and [4] in the top-3 Google hits (the first is our article) I doubt it would be deleted if you renominated it. You are only two edits away from being able to edit the article. It could certainly be improved but that's the case for a lot of our more than 4 million articles. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:34, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've done some editing of the article myself. I still have to clean up (shorten) the "Further reading" section, but there is no doubt in my mind that the article meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, and thus there is about --zero-- chance of successfully deleting it. I recommend focusing attention elsewhere.
That the article was (probably) written, initially, by her grandson is a WP:COI issue, but that doesn't mean that the article should be deleted - it just means that other editors should give it a lot more scrutiny than normal. And the article looks, now, fairly well-scrubbed. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 22:43, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Edits accepted then deleted

    Hi,

I am an academic and have added a few edits on film theory. Two of my previous changes on A Serbian Film were accepted months ago. I added two more on last night. They differ in no way to the existing material on the site, including the changes I added months ago, yet all changes I have made barring one (including my previously accepted changes) has now been deleted.

I have made no claims for the films other than stating what other perspectives exist and have given cultural context, such as information on a university that ran a conference.

Please explain how I can add this information as the pages do not currently give a representative view of the subjects.

    Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by KarenOughton1 (talkcontribs) 12:11, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The simplest way to deal with this is to discuss it on the article's Talk page with other contributors intetrested in the same subjects, such a discussion is the third step of the "Bold, Revert, Discuss" rule. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:59, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Unhappy at speedy deletion proposal

    Possible trolling from blocked user
The following discussion has been closed. Please do not modify it.

I am new to Wikipedia (I joined today, infact!) and I have written Pandang Dog Tamlei, regarding a social movement in Cambodia, a small country in East Asia. This is a very credible movement in Cambodia, and is credible enough to make articles to some of the mot popular newspapers in Cambodia. I would like to improve the article, and i am happy to take advise. I have provided references, but these references are in Cambodian (Khmer), and not English. I understand that Wikipedia is an online encyclopaedia about articles all over the world, so not all reference links can be in English? However just slapping a speedy deletion notice on this article, instead of providing information on how to improve the way the article is written seems more feasible. --Growen Rowen (talk) 15:22, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried to fix the references you provided but two of them are faulty. You might have better luck fixing them as you clearly understand the language. The Speedy deletion has been requested because the article does not assert why the subject (the organization) is significant. From what I've read it is a single-issue, single city, pressure group - so it's significance is rather limited. They don't appear to play a significant role in city politics at all, nevermind nationally. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:38, 27 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Whats the "legend" for orange?

I was trying to update the information on the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights by uploading a new map showing that North Korea had withdrawn from the Covenant (its unclear wither that status was accepted by the other members, but thats beside the point). I changed the map fine, but I am having trouble with the legend on the page itself. Each color has a box and an explanation for what each color means, but I can't seem to be able to find the "legend" for the new orange color.

      signed but not ratified
signed, ratified, but has stated it wishes to withdrawal from the ICCPR. (See Withdrawal, below)

    Stuck- need photos...any volunteers?

I have a short task for a bored wikipedian who has access to a camera and the means to photograph the lower part of their face (no-one will be able to identify you from these)

I'm after nice, brightly lit, non blurry close up pictures like:

    • this [7] (no need to photograph whole face- just mouth)
    • this [8]
    • and this [9]

They will be used on the trismus and temporomandibular joint dysfunction articles to illustrate physiotherapy techniques for these disorders. It would be great if someone could make me some photos like this and upload under a license that won't get deleted- public domain or the normal one.

Thanks, and it's definitely worth some barnstars ;-) Lesion (talk) 01:14, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Posting Duolingo Community Translations

Duolingo is a language learning site that has users go through a language course and, later on, allow them to translate documents from their target language to their native language. Many people upload Wikipedia articles because they are creative commons. Would it be alright if I uploaded an English article without a Spanish (or another language) translation, had the Duolingo community translate it, then upload the Spanish translation? — Preceding unsigned comment added by The Red Rat Writer (talkcontribs) 02:16, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can't upload the translation to Wikipedia, because the terms of that site don't allow commercial reuse and anything uploaded to Wikipedia must be available to reuse for any purpose. Also, the site says that you can only submit original work or work owned by you (the submitter), so I'm not sure that uploading Wikipedia content to the site is allowed. RudolfRed (talk) 03:13, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure that I follow RudolfRed's response. At issue seems to be whether Duolingo asserts a copyright over the work done by the students. I note that the site says "When the document is fully translated, Duolingo returns it to the original content owner who, depending on the type of document they uploaded, pays for the translation." Normally someone paying for a translation would have all rights to it; if there is a paying customer here (you?). In any case, if you have full rights to the translated text, then you could in turn release it to Wikipedia when you post it ("upload" is a technical term; you won't be uploading).
The other point I want to make is that you're really asking at the wrong place. If you post a translated article to the Spanish-language Wikipedia, it's up to that language community to deal with any copyright issues. We here - at the English language Wikipedia (that's what the "en" in "en.wikipedia.org" means) - certainly welcome you to spread knowledge by giving Wikipedia articles (in English) to anyone you want. Please do give attribution to Wikipedia as the source, however (as in "The following article is from Wikipedia"). (A link to the version of the article you've copied would make the attribution even better.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:34, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is what their terms say: "As between us and you, you will own the copyright in any derivative work we create that is a translation of material you submit provided that you do not make or permit any commercial use of the translation. " Emphasis mine. You cannot put material into Wikipedia that has that restriction is what I was trying to say. I don't see the note about paying anything, so we're probably looking at different pages. This is the one I found: [10]RudolfRed (talk) 03:39, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That is essentially meaningless. You either own the copyright on something or you don't. If you can't do what you like with it, you don't own it. You might own it in trust, but that'd require significantly more legal complexity than above. I don't know if it is still the case, but Duolingo promoted itself as translating Wikipedia articles but in fact ended up translating articles from Vikidia, which is a non-WMF project that hosts a "simple French" (and Spanish, Italian) wiki for kids. It'd be good if we could work with Duolingo, but there seems to be something of a communications gap between Duolingo and Wikimedia. —Tom Morris (talk) 16:01, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was speculating about copyright ownership, but RudolfRed is clearly right that forbidding commercial use of the translated text makes that translated text unusable for any language Wikipedia - all language versions require a free content license, which includes the right for commercial use.
I'll also note that Simple English Wikipedia might be an even better source for text than regular articles in Wikipedia; too bad Duolingo's copyright terms are what they are, since they prevent sharing the translation results (on Wikipedia, anyway). -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:47, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Legitimate pages need to stay please

I have submitted two pages that need to stay up. Mark S Lowe, a write that has worked on LINKED projects on Wikipedia, and who works for several folks in Hollywood, but as a shadow writer who cannot legally claim all his fame.

Two: Tales of a Ratt which is missing from Bobby Blotzer's page.

I'm legally allowed to post about both. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Drtyrell (talkcontribs) 06:59, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds great! Assuming that your subject meets Wikipedia's standards on notability, (not sure what you mean by "LINKED projects on Wikipedia), it would seem that articles about shadow writers would intuitively require heavy documentation to establish both notability as well as to link them to notable works. Sounds like a tough project. Good luck! Cyphoidbomb (talk) 08:06, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Drtyrell, I think you have some misconceptions about what Wikipedia is. No article in Wikipedia needs to stay up. The criteria under which an article may stay up are entirely Wikipedia's, not those of the subject: the most important one is that the subject passes the test for notability, in Wikipedia's special sense: if reliable sources, independent of the subject, have written about the writer, then an article which cites those sources may be retained. If there are no such sources, then any article will be deleted. From what you say, it may be difficult to satisfy this criterion for Mark S Lowe.
Secondly, you are indeed legally allowed to post about both - as is anybody else in the world. But if, as I suspect from your language, you are associated with the subjects of the articles, then you are strongly discouraged from posting about them, as you have a WP:conflict of interest.
What this comes down to, is that, reading your post, I get the impression that you are thinking that you can use Wikipedia as a medium for promotion: if that is indeed your aim, I suggest you go elsewhere, as you are likely to meet strong resistance. --ColinFine (talk) 16:58, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Help to publish article

Hello, I am a little new to Wikipedia and need some help. I had published an article that was deleted a few days later and I was told it was because the article did not contain "notable, significant information". I went to work on this article again and added some notable information, so I went to "move" it or publish it, but then something came up and said I was not allowed to publish it. I am not sure why that happened and what I am supposed to do now. I greatly appreciate any help! Molar28 (talk) 14:50, 28 May 2013 (UTC)Molar28[reply]

You appear to be trying to create an article about a small business in Amarillo. Everything I have seen suggests that this business is not notable enough for inclusion in Wikipedia. If that is correct, what you are supposed to do now is give up trying to write an article about it. However if I have missed something newsworthy, such as the business accidentally killing an eminent patient, then you should include this in the article, with references to show that it was mentioned in reliable independent sources. Maproom (talk) 15:03, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wouldn't that just warrant a mention of the company in the article of the eminent person and not the other way around? I know it's just an example but if the person is already eminent/notable, then him/her being killed by the company (this is hypothetical of course) would only allow for a mention in the eminent person's article right? And not a new article created solely for a single-time event. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 15:25, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
OK. What happened is that you created the article once, and an admin moved the text to your userspace so you could work on improving it, because it wasn't ready to go live. When you moved your new version back to articlespace, it was speedily deleted by a different admin because it did not indicate how the subject was notable by Wikipedia standards.
Notable has a very specific meaning here on Wikipedia. Our criteria for what constitutes a notable business or organisation are at WP:CORP. The general notability guideline is at WP:GNG. The business in question must satisfy one or the other in order to be the subject of a Wikipedia article. What's more, an article about it must actually demonstrate how the business meets those notability criteria, or it risks being deleted anyway, which is what happened to you second time around. If you want to try again, please read the notability guidelines I have linked to carefully and decide whether you can show - with references - how this business satisfies at least one of them. Then contact the admin who speedy deleted your article at User talk:JamesBWatson and ask them if they are prepared to copy the deleted text back into your userspace again so you can get it up to standard.
Finally, a word of warning. Your username suggests to me that you may have a connection to the business in question. If so, you should not be writing about it here because you have a conflict of interest, making it difficult to meet our neutrality requirements. You should only continue to try to create this article provided you (a) can demonstrate that the business is notable and (b) are not trying in any way to use Wikipedia to promote the business, which is not permitted. Hope this helps. - Karenjc 16:45, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's a restriction in the underlying technology (HTML). There are ways round it, in CSS, but they're difficult to make sufficiently general to work with Wikimarkup. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 20:37, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I need a suggestion or three

I've been away from the Wikimedia world for a while, save for the occasional "that just needs fixed" edit, so aren't current on editing developments (or the 'verbose' culture), yet have some new article pages I've spent the last six weeks researching about ready to compose with pics. Hence, I need a way to stumble forward:

    1. There was, I'd thought, a WYSIWIG editor capability that was in Beta test from the Mediawiki developers a few years back (?4?-?5? ??!). Did it ever arrive?
    2. My needs are simple, I'd prefer to compose off line with something I can:
      1. document the full path link local HDD in the document body' (e.g. C:\All_docs\Project_name\Imagename.jgp/png/svg, etc.)
      2. Preferentially, see the image, size and arrange it on the page with some general sense gained of how the prose and image size versus one another. I can sort of do that in Wordpad, but getting the images sized and over on the right margin isn't simple and easy. Ideally would be able to set an HTML like align-right default, and perhaps a default or numeric size=, width=, height= perameter, again, hopefully by default, or at least image by image.
      3. Planned on stripping that Document by pasting and re-cutting in/from text editor, paste in sandbox. That of course leaves the formatting behind, and the images. Leaving me with Wiki-markup stub.
      4. Then upload pics, and deal the licensing needs in a binge edit
      5. Re-edit sandbox, and polish, etc.
    3. The missing link is what Windows XP editor will allow that sort of composition easily... I'm meaning referencing the image with a full pathspec I can use later to upload the pics. I've Open Office and Microsoft Office, but have little 'fancy' experience with either word processor; I can get around in most software, but this is not just a letter! Tend to just use Wordpad in the few times I need .rtf files a year. Perhaps there is a template I can adapt in one of those that would do this sort of thing???
    4. I've been editing here so much that wikimarkup's not the issue, but composing things easily is the need. Seeing the pics near the description text is useful, and in this case necessary. I can read past square brackets galore, so will be able to concentrate on the prose. Thanks! //FrankB 18:51, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I did a google search on offline Wikipedia editor that had a number of promising links. I'd guess that searching on offline MediaWiki editor would yield similarly interesting, but different, results. I do doubt that many people edit offline, if only because most resources are online and because online connectivity is getting fairly ubiquitous. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:07, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thankyou both. Cheerful greetings, John Broughton, I remember you from back when I was hyperactive here.
    • In this case the problem is accessing the large number of pics so I can manage the upload and text composition both. The project is actually on Wikibooks, but this site far better manned, and is where I still have the odd contact or five, though sadly so many have left.
    • Bottom line: I don't need 'not used' battles on the commons before I have text, etc. Thanks again, will see what works for me! //FrankB 15:12, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Okay: Twinkle is a tool that provides a bunch of buttons and other interfaces that helps users tag articles for cleanup, nominated articles for deletion, and makes finding, reversing and warning people about vandalism purportedly easier. The policeman image is a logo associated with twinkle that people who use it sometimes employ to show they are acting as patrollers, something akin to policing, though the analogy is inapt in my view.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:47, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I second that, because you're fully responsible for all the edits you make when using automated tools. It's easy to make a mistake when you're editing very fast, particularly if you're not familiar with the manual way of doing it, and "Sorry, I was using tools" isn't accepted in mitigation. - Karenjc 22:48, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    3. Is Mr Wales popular within Wikipedia ? What can he do better? Does he acknowledge your contributions?

    1. Jimmy Wales is the founder of Wikipedia and of the Wikimedia Foundation, which oversees Wikipedia and all of its sister sites, in all of the various languages it is published in. Wikipedia:Role of Jimmy Wales explains his past and current roles with the organization.
    2. See Special:Contributions/Jimbo Wales. He does still regularly edit articles, as you can see, as of right now he had done some article edits as recently as a week ago.
    3. Like all large organizations (and Wikipedia is VERY large) he has his supporters and his detractors, though he is generally accorded a certainly level of honor commensurate with his role in founding and leading Wikipedia and the WMF.

The problem you appear to have isn't in establishing the society's existence, it is in establishing that it is notable enough to merit an article under our guidelines: see Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). Frankly, I can't see any way that your organization would meet the criteria. Note that this requires that "The scope of their activities is national or international in scale", which appears not to be the case. Sorry. AndyTheGrump (talk) 21:18, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Trolls

    1. We are getting a lot of comments and questions at the Help Desk that appear to be trolling. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:41, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    2. I have an incident to report about a vandal/troll. At about 1200 GMT (0800 New York time), the featured article was vandalized repeatedly by an IPv6 address. It was reverted once by ClueBot, the vandalism-fighter who never sleeps, twice by me, and once by another editor. The article was vandalized again by the IPv6 address after my first revert before I could provide a Level 3 warning, so after two reverts I provided a Level 4 warning, and went to ANV. The IPv6 address was blocked within a few minutes, but not before he put a Level 4 warning on my talk page for harassment. Then he posted an unblock request to his talk page. "This is a shared Wifi. I am innocent." The timing was such that that statement is not worthy of belief, and if he wasn't the vandal, he would have been better to ask to have the block changed to a softblock to allow creation of a registered account. I took down the Level 4 warning. Please verify that providing a vandalism warning for an edit that is clearly vandalism is not harassment. However, I wouldn't expect a troll to be civil. Robert McClenon (talk) 23:41, 28 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's only "harassment" if you're following an editor around, or repeatedly attacking him/her in various venues. More to the point, if an admin agreed with your AIV request, and blocked the IP address, then you were - almost certainly - correct. Admins are expected to research AIV requests, not implement them automatically, and they can - and do - reject requests upon occasion.
Most experienced editors think it's best to be bold. That's not to say that you shouldn't learn from your mistakes; it's just to say that good editors are so thinly spread that we don't have the luxury - if we want to take care of important things - of doing lots of consultations before acting. It's better to just do your honest best, don't get upset by corrections by more experienced editors (that's a learning experience), and not second-guess yourself. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 02:55, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't follow the relevance of John Broughton's reply: I read Robert as saying that the apparent vandal had accused him of harassment, not a more experience editor. --ColinFine (talk) 16:41, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry about not being clear. I was suggesting that taking down the level 4 warning was a mistake - that Robert was second-guessing himself, and that in the future he should not worry so much about being wrong. Perhaps I'm reading too much that action, but that's why I suggested just being bold and seeing how other (experienced) editors react. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:36, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The Wiki page on Unintended Consequences says the novel is currently out of print. It IS back in print and available in paperback from http://www.accuratepress.net

It also states that Accurate Press is in Minnesota. This is also incorrect, it is in Missouri.

    BLP issue

I created a page for Danny Tate (validated artist) at his request [DANNY TATE]. Someone keeps going on the page and putting his criminal record on the page. I would understand if someone wrote an article, but these are cut and pastes from his court record, no story told. It is an obvious attempt to discredit Mr. Tate. He has asked me to delete the page altogether, as my attempts to delete the information are only met with repostings. He said he is worried this malicious posting will cause problems for his young children. Robert Downey Jr. and Britney Spears both have criminal records but those records are not posted on their pages. It is clear to me that someone is trying to make Mr. Tate look bad and they are using Wikipedia to do it. Please either lock the page or delete it completely. I do not know how to do either. It would be a shame to have to delete it after all the work I did to write it. duran17Duran17 (talk) 02:56, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    I have semi-protected the article for three months.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:09, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Keep in mind that if information is verified from a reliable source it can be used - within the limits of the BLP policy. If there are indisputable sources that prove he really does have a criminal record, it can be mentioned in the article. Article subjects do not have the right to not be embarrassed. Unwatching from the Watchlist

Is there a simple way to unwatch a page from my watchlist, without having to go to the page, have it load when I don't want to read it, click on "unwatch", and wait for it to tell me the page has been unwatched?

If not, why not, and how can such a thing be instituted? μηδείς (talk) 03:05, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can go to your watchlist and click on " View and edit watchlist" near the very top. What I suggest though, is that you go to Special:MyPage/skin.js and add to it
    importScript('user:js/watchlist.js');

then clear you cache. It makes managing these matters very easy and the interface is really unobtrusive until you invoke it. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:17, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I have done what I think you have suggested, and created this page http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Medeis/monobook.js. But it does not seem to have effected anything. Did I misunderstand you? μηδείς (talk) 03:25, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, that looks right. First, did you clear your cache? If so and it's working, what you should see, near the top of the page (when you are at your watchlist) is a little menu:

     … | 7 days | all | Only new | x | ↑↓ | ±

The "X" will populate the "x)" watchlist remover tab next to each link in your watchlist. The other tools are useful as well and it toggles off and on so it's mostly invisible except when you need it.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:32, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
An alternative is to enable the Navigation popups gadget. Then you can unwatch a page by hovering your mouse over a link in the watchlist, or anywhere else for that matter, and picking "unwatch" from the "actions" menu that pops up. -- John of Reading (talk) 07:43, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    John Johnson (reporter)

My name is John Johnson and my Wikipedia page is correct except there is no picture of me. I bring this to your attention because below my name on the John Johnson page are three pictures of related people. They are photos of three white anchormen of my era. My Wikipedia page summary accurately details my career as an Emmy award-winning producer, director, journalist and author and established painter and former professor. Frankly, I don't understand why my white colleagues deserve a picture and I don't. There are many stories on Wikipedia about me with photos. For instance: Ex-newsman John Johnson's Art Portrays His Life.../ Anchorman Uncovers Lung Cancer(YouTube)/WCBS sign-off network cancels news team bigs/NY Times: 2 Ex-WCBS Anchors are hired by WNBC. I would appreciate my picture on the John Johnson(reporter)page as my four adult children keeping asking why it is not displayed along with my former white colleagues. Well there may not be any photos of you that Wikipedia is allowed to use. Why don't you take one yourself and upload it under a free license? flarn2006 [u t c] time: 04:02, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Echoing what flarn wrote, images must be under a free license (not under copyright) or in the public domain. If you can provide one, please upload it here. Let us know if you need further help or have any other questions. --NeilN talk to me 04:11, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) This has nothing whatsoever to do with your skin color. If you look around Wikipedia you'll note that a vast number of articles on living persons, some of the most famous people in the world, have no picture, and for many other, what we do have is a very poor one. The reason for this is that Wikipedia strives to contain freely-usable content, and we strongly respect copyrights. For that reason, since most photographs are copyrighted, we can't use them and when we can use them, they are often not a good picture but what some person snapped somewhere at a press event. One more wrinkle to understand is that we sometimes allow pictures to be used under fair use even while they remain copyrighted, but we do not allow this for living persons for reasons which are beyond the scope here. So, as flarn2006 suggests above, if you want to see a photograph attached to the article on you (and we do too; articles on people are better with a photo), you can help us with that! The rub, though, is that as I was saying, we require freely-licensed (or public domain) images, which means any photograph you send you must freely-license in a manner compatible with our license, or place it into the public domain (forever). Also, we can't just trust someone to be who they say they are across the Internet, so it has to be given to us through a verifiable method. It can be a bit complicated but please see Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 04:18, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Whoa, that part flew right over my head. Fuhghettaboutit is right; Wikipedia isn't a racist organization. You're not being treated differently because of your race. :-) flarn2006 [u t c] time: 04:36, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
None of the other reporters mentioned in the John Johnson article has an image on Wikipedia. I wonder if this could be a Google summary issue. They sometimes pull images from non-Wikipedia sources and add them to the Wikipedia snippet they present for searches. typing in "John Johnson reporter" into Google I see something that appears to be as the OP describe. Unfortunately, we cannot control how Google reuses our content. If a freely-licensed image was added to the article here I think it will soon show up on Google as well. It certainly sounds like it. I wish posters would say when they saw something on a page at Google or Facebook and not at Wikipedia. Here is our standard reply for Google:
Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information. Why aren't users with IPBE allowed to edit using proxies?

On the page about editing from open proxies, it says, "While [blocking proxies] may affect legitimate users, they are not the intended targets and may freely use proxies until those are blocked." However, on the page for IP block exemption, it says, "Editors granted IP address block exemption should be aware that breach of this policy, including unauthorized editing via proxies, or significant concerns over account abuse or other conduct, may lead to removal of the IP address block exemption."

So I'm confused. If blocking proxies is not meant to impact legitimate edits, and legitimate users are allowed to use proxies that haven't been blocked yet, why doesn't this apply to users with IP block exemption?

    flarn2006 [u t c] time: 04:01, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is a lot of information in that article that could be improved, clarified, or cut, including ambiguous statements such as "performing stand-up comedy for the troops". Which troops? American troops? In which war? The War of 1812? (Clearly not, but still ambiguous.) The "dysfunctional family" claim, (a run-of-the-mill bio inclusion for a comedian,) could be perceived a violation of WP:BLP if unsourced. It's definitely original research. Was "emerging talent to watch" an official statement made by an official in an official capacity, or simply a passing comment made by an emcee onstage in the introduction of the performer? This is why sources are so important in establishing notability and in supporting claims. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 06:18, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Regarding Article Upload

    Dear Wikipedia Volunteers,

I am writing this email to you because of a specific concern I am experience at the very moment. I have written an informational article about a specific knowledge sharing program ran by the Korea Development Institute School of Public Policy and Management. The program, called the "K-Developedia" was launced in November 2013. Its main purpose is to develop and keep in database an economic development experience specfic to the Korean economy from its years in poverty to its current stable status today. It works as an encyclopedia database where academic journals, thesis papers, and other studies can be accessed in order to help and aid other countries (developing countries to be more precise), to seek advice or attempt to find solutions to the problems of their own context. However, we are not familiar on the ways of using Wikipedia. And we have, in fact, tried to upload an article about our new program, which has not been going well. We ask for you generous help in letting us achieve our vision of aiding others who can learn from our K-Developedia program. Please do respond and we pray for you kind understanding. Thank you.

    Utmost genuinely,

You have created an article which is now in your sandbox, at User:Dellince/sandbox. While it is there, it is not a Wikipedia article, but you are able to work on it and improve it until it is good enough to convert into an article. Here are some things which you will need to do:
    1. Start the article by stating what K-Developedia is. At present, your draft article starts with the etymology of the name, then there is a section on the economic history of Korea. Before any of this, you should say something like "K-Developedia is a database maintained by the government of South Korea...".
    2. Provide, in the article, references to reliable independent sources, establishing that K-Developedia is notable. Maproom (talk) 09:08, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
That sandbox draft is, however, a copyright violation, being copied from https://www.kdevelopedia.org/kDevelopedia.do , and hence is liable to speedy deletion. If you want to try again you will need to put it in your own words. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:17, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Help regarding SUL.

Right, now, I recently changed my username to my current one (Jcc) from Chihin.chong.

Problem 1: SUlInfo says Chihin.chong has a SUL account? Is that right? Is that supposed to happen?[11]

Problem 2: I can still logon as Chihin.chong which really annoys me as when I go back to the English Wikipedia from another Wiki where I am still chihin.chong.

Problem 3: By asking for an unsurp of an account for SUL on another Wikipedia, I create a new Wiki account for chihin.chong on the other Wiki, which means that chihin.chong has around 15 wikis he is working on, which only increases with each SUL request. Am I supposed to not login or something.

Please don't "bite" me for my lack of knowledge regarding SUL, thanks jcc (tea and biscuits) 08:28, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

1 - SUL accounts were, I believe, established automatically (some time ago) whenever there was no name conflict. So yes, it's quite possible that chihin.chong has a SUL.
2 Why are you still logging on (anywhere) as chihin.chong? (If you want to avoid doing this mistakenly, you can always change your password to something you don't write down and won't remember; then you won't be able to logon mistakenly.)
3 To establish a "Jcc" account on another language Wikipedia, you do NOT have to logon with your old userid - you can just go ahead and logon with your new user name - that's why SUL was created. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 18:44, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    As an reply:
    1. Thanks for that information!
    2. Because when I crosswiki, Jcc can't be loginned (because I don't "own that Jcc), and such Chihin.chong is used instead. I'll try not to do that again, if my memory allows!
    3. Whoops. Big whoops. That was the problem as I (mistakenly) believed that to edit the change username page I should login first as Chihin.chong.
I suppose that since my other crosswiki Chihin.chong's can't be deleted, I'll have to live with my stupidity. jcc (tea and biscuits) 19:41, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
2: One way to deal with this might be to change the appearance of the en.wikipedia skin for the chihin.chong logon. If, for example, in Preferences, you set your skin to monobook [see the Appearances tab; you might still be on that anyway] and then, in the Gadgets tab, you selected "Use a black background with green text on the Monobook", I can pretty much guarantee that you'd realize that something was different.
3: You can (effectively) delete a user account by (a) moving all edits to a new account; (b) getting an admin to delete old user pages (which are redirects). But it seems like a lot of effort if multiple language Wikipedias are involved. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:17, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    JEHOVAH WITNESSES

Having read your article on Jehovah's Witnesses and noted many errors, the one that I would really like to point out is the statement about their supposed current president. ALL presidents are members of The Governing Body and remain so until their death. They never ever retire. Urgent: The Estonian Wikipedia needs intervention now

I understand that the Estonian language Wikipedia has virtually nothing to do with the English language one, but I ask that all Sysops/Admins read this statement. As the English wikipedia is the largest Wikipedia edition , with the most edits/pages 4m edits vs 100k edits on our enclyclopedia, I ask on all English Wikipedia Admins/Sysops and even regular editors to respond to this crisis immediatly.

Let me start off by saying, I am not an admin on the Estonian Wikipedia, I am more of a 'WikiGnome' repairing odds and edds. I am a humble editor on occasion. But I am very worried at the state of the encyclopedia and the way it is going. This is a crisis and there are not enough Sysops/Admins on the Estojnian version of Wikipedia to address this.

Firstly, the poor state of the articles written on the Estonian Wikipedia is horrible. The grammar is wrong on 60-70% of all articles and the verbs are wrong too In many cases, vandalism people often jumble up words on pages and there are not enough active users to correct these, leaving a backlog.

We have suffered at least 15 mass vandalism attacks with IP address coming from Secondary Schools in Estonia and in Finland. These attacks have affected thousands of articles and we do not have the manpower to correct this. If a Estonian reader was to read Wikipedia, he/she would immediatly use another source.

We have also suffered some cyber attacks on admin pages, that need to be repaired. There is lack of software to correct these errors. We have had some help from Finnish and Russian wikipedia users to repair these but not enough. Please I appeal to you to send your Wikipedians to help the Estonian Wikipedia, I honestly see the Estonian Wikipedia not making it till 2014 unless something is done.

    Thank You. --Saarnfeliffe (talk) 16:54, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Iranian presidential election, 2013

Hi! I have a question about article Iranian presidential election, 2013. Only 3 out of 8 candidates have announced their official color of the campaign. Two others have unofficial references and others may not announced any color for the campaign. We must use their official color in the election inbox or not? If yes, when a candidate don't announced anything what we must do? Thanks for your help. Tabarez (talk) 18:06, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dirk Yates page removed in error.

    Hello,

I believe the Dirk Yates page was taken down in error. He is a notable director and producer who has made 100s of films during his career. He has been featured on CNN and his Private Collection films made national headlines. Is it possible to turn this page back on, or figure out why is was taken down so it can be prevented in the future? — Preceding unsigned comment added by DavidC1R (talkcontribs) 19:10, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion log at Dirk Yates (click on it even though it is a redlink) shows that it was a copyright violation, thus it had to be deleted. It can be prevented by not copying directly from other publications. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 20:07, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You might be able to get a copy of that deleted page, if you plan to personally improve the article (specifically, by rewriting everything so that it is mostly based on reliable sources). If you plan to do this, ask an admin for help. But keep in mind that there is no way, as Roger has said, that Wikipedia can accept text that is (for example) simply copied and pasted from a website - that is a copyright violation. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 20:27, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And we won't provide people with copies of articles which had been deleted as copyright violations, since that would compound the violation. --Orange Mike | Talk 20:32, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c x2) David, since you are interested in this individual (and if he is indeed notable) maybe you should be bold and write the article on him. That's how all of our content came to be: someone interested, seeing a gap, and filling it. If you want to take on that project, I would start at the Wikipedia:Tutorial, then look at Wikipedia:Your first article. and Wikipedia:How to write a great article and then write it through the article wizard. If you make a start, drop me a note and I'll help. After writing the preceding text, I looked him up. I now see there's a great (or awful) unintended double entendre in my post! I want to create a Venn diagram

I want to create a Venn diagram for a certain article to visualize a complex relationship between various things. What's the best way to go about this on Wikipedia?68.227.174.198 (talk) 21:22, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You would make it offline as an image using whatever program you are familiar with, e.g. GIMP, and then upload it to the Wikimedia Commons under a free copyright license (or release it into the public domain). You will need to sign up for an account there (which takes about one minute). As an example, see File:Venn diagram gr la ru.svg. Once uploaded, you can use the image here natively. To do so you would add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 21:43, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    22 Year Old Timestamp?

Unsure whether to post this at the Technical helpdesk or here, but here I am. I was commenting on the talk page of Tree throw as I had something to say about it (I was a tree surgeon for 40+ years!) , and my timestamp dated 1991, not 2013. Perhaps a technical error but just thought I would let you guys know. --Battleby (talk) 21:44, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Kiara Belen

Please remove the bio for Kiara Belen and replace with the following information. I am her publicist of record and would like to have this information locked so that it may not be changed.

Kiara Nativity Belen was born in New Jersey, but moved to Las Vegas with her family early in her teens. She was the oldest of seven children and often found herself their protector for her siblings. <content removed per WP:BLP> Devastated, but not defeated, Kiara was driven to fight; she was determined to show that she, Kiara, is a warrior! Kiara decided to focus on creating a positive life for herself. She began working out and playing basketball. This paid off because she was offered, and she accepted a full scholarship to play basketball at UC Irvine. At the end of four years, Kiara was the star shooting guard and captain of the team! Kiara had only just begun to explore where her talents could take her in this world. Kiara has taken the world by storm in the pursuit of her dreams. Millions of young girls have been, and will be, inspired through hopelessness by watching her unstoppable climb to the top! Many listened to her blow the judges away with her amazing voice in an Alicia Keys singing contest. She won! She also appeared in Tyler Perry’s “Love Thy Neighbor.” “America’s Next Top Model” selected her as a contestant for the show, and she was the runner-up for cycle nineteen of the show. Kiara has not held back! Kiara is currently working on her own clothing line. Of all her accomplishments, she remains humble and always remembers from whence she has come. To give back, she supports “Children Uniting Nations,” a non-profit organization that lends itself to the livelihood of foster children. Through her love for life, she continues to let her light shine because she, Kiara Nativity Belen, is a champion! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:C5A4:ADA0:8CD2:740F:C1F1:509B (talk) 21:49, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The write-up you have suggested does not meet our standards for neutral point of view, references, or encyclopedic style. You would also be discouraged from writing the article as you have a conflict of interest in the matter. We also do not lock articles, except in extreme cases. You might like to add some specific referenced facts on the article's talk page and ask the article editors to incorporate them. Rmhermen (talk) 22:07, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) Hi Dayna. We will not do this for a number of reasons. First, the text you wish to post is extremely promotional in both content and tone. Articles must be written from a neutral point of view and should not contain promotional language. This content also has no sources to verify it, which is especially important in an article on a living person. Third, under the policy I just linked, contentious material about living persons may not be included without high quality sourcing, and this statement contains negative content about a family member (which I have removed). Fourth, the existing content should not be simply removed, though it can be supplemented with additional material, or have incorrect statements removed.

What I suggest is that you go to the talk page of the article (Talk:Kiara Belen) and post what facts you think should be added, providing a reliable source that verifies each fact. As her publicist, you should be very cognizant of where material is published. Also, you can state there any corrections or other types of modifications you propose. Finally, please note that subjects of articles do no own them and in fact, we advise people who are closely associated with the subject of articles to avoid editing them directly because of the conflict of interest present between the ideal of producing a neutral encyclopedia, verses the desire to promote (and often whitewash any negativity) by people writing about themselves and people with whom they are closely connected. We do not lock down articles, except to stop excessive vandalism, and occasionally for other reasons, and articles are always subject to change. Melatonin

I am currently a medical student and also a neuroscience major with 4 years of research experience in neurobiology- specifically tumors of the brain.

I am no expert, but I am knowledgeable enough to determine when there is clear bias regarding a particular drug.

In this case, the wiki article on Melatonin is rife with significant problems. Normally, this wouldn't need a serious complaint- but many students and individuals may come across this article (even when they should know better) and use its information to determine whether they should take melatonin.

The available information on the safety and efficacy of melatonin is sparse at best. The evidence that is there is neither supportive nor necessarily detrimental towards melatonin use. However, there is concerning evidence- enough for the FDA to issue a warning (but not widely available to read) about the dangers of Melatonin.

The wiki article glosses over these issues and gives a very biased yet science based promotion of the drug. There is a strong chance that the persons involved may have some ties to Melatonin sales and marketing.

Even if they do not, the tone of the article is far too biased in favor of Melatonin.

Why is this an issue? Because physicians do not enough about Melatonin other than to not recommend it because it is a hormone. But many people chose to take this drug anway-ignoring the potential harm it may cause. I strongly urge you to reformat the article and ascertain a better approach to presenting the information.

A disclaimer stating that Melatonin's long term harm has not been ascertained would be a good way to start.

    Please take this seriously.

    Thank you.

Concerned citizen. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.80.245.161 (talk) 22:14, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The best place to raise this would be at Talk:Melatonin. Note however that Wikipedia articles are based on published reliable sources, and that standards for sourcing of medical material are particularly strict - see WP:MEDRS. I suggest that you locate such sources as necessary, and present them at the talk page. AndyTheGrump (talk) 22:20, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with you – the page shows signs of pro-melatonin hype, done more subtly than usual. I also agree with AndyTheGrump, the best place to express your views is the article's talk page. Of course there is nothing to stop you from editing the article directly, preferably adding references as you go. I wish you success. Maproom (talk) 22:42, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Adding information about the "FDA warning" you mentioned, and citing it, is probably a good place to start. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:05, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    redirects for a new article

I just recently created the article for ectomycorrhiza. However, only that exact word links to the article. The plural ectomycorrhizas links to the "did you mean" page, the plural ectomycorrhizae leads to the mycorrhiza page, and the adjective ectomycorrhizal leads to the old ectomycorrhiza subheading of the mycorrhiza page. Is there a way to make various iterations of the subject name all lead to the same page, namely the main article recently created? I think that would be helpful when people search for similar terms (such as plurals and adjectival forms). Thanks in advance! Ebertar (talk) 22:32, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed, I think. I added one redirect, and altered two others. Is there a difference between arbuscular mycorrhiza and ectomycorrhiza? The Mycorrhiza#Ectomycorrhiza section currently links to the former. Maproom (talk) 22:52, 29 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you intuited a feature of the software we could not live without. (edit conflict) Do you mean printing on paper? If you mean on a screen then most browsers can increase size (of both text and images) with Ctrl++, decrease with Ctrl+-, and return to normal with Ctrl+0. Good afternoon,

Your English langauge site has a page dedicated to this apparent organisation. I have twoo problems with this: First it doesn'y actually exist. The German minority in Poland is represented through the medium of a German electoral committee. Secondly, I am cited as one of the main sources for this piee of dis-information. I've never claimed that the electoral committee is a political party. Can you please as a minimum remove my articles as spources and preferably remove the article itself.

    Thank you

(Professor) Karl Cordell — Preceding unsigned comment added by 141.163.23.12 (talk) 11:30, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you can cite a reliable source, you can edit and correct the article. Otherwise, discuss on the article's talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 11:48, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Um, we don't need to ask professor Cordell to cite a 'reliable source' for a statement he is already being cited for. We need to check whether the sources cited say what they are purported to say - and anyone can do that. However, I note that the article doesn't actually cite Cordell for any of the (few) references - instead it includes his works in a bibliography. This certainly needs looking into, but the burden of proof here rests with those who include material to show that it is correct. AndyTheGrump (talk) 14:12, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looking into this further, I note that both the Polish-language [12] and German-language [13] Wikipedia articles linked to this article refer to an 'Election Committee', and not a political party. It appears that we've simply got it wrong. I'll ask at the language reference desk for help from Polish and German speakers to confirm this, and see if we can sort this mess out. Table spacing

Can someone please help me sort the spacing on this table:

Year Worldwide sales Worldwide production Notes
2008 0 1,600[1] Was sold in some European countries for a small portion of the year.
2009 86,500[2] 91,700[1] Officially launched throughout Europe and production increased to ≥850 units per day to keep up with demand. Citroën expected sales of between 90,000 and 100,000 units, a target which was not met.[3]
2010 83,700[4] 77,100[4] Worldwide sales decreased by 3.2% in 2010 and production was cut by about 16% in anticipation of lower sales in 2011, possibly caused by the European recession – Europe is the biggest market for the vehicle.[5]
2011 101,612[6] TBA The Trnava plant was closed between 28 October and 18 November as production had exceeded demand. Citroën said overall sales had fallen by 13.3% since 2010 and announced that three PSA plants could be closed.[5]

I need the table the same length, but with the Notes section bigger and sales and production smaller. Thanks Jenova20 (email) 12:42, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The column widths as determined by "style="width:40%;" and so on total up to 200%. Adjust the percentages so that the total is 100, start by simply halving all the nmbers, then you can play around with the numbers until it looks right - just be sure to keep to total at 100%. I'd guess that you want the last column to be around 40-50%. You can also adjust the total table width, currently set at 650pixels by the "style="width:650px;" statement. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:52, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    I've got it! Thanks a lot Roger Jenova20 (email) 14:12, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Roger, are you able to sort the table so that "Worldwide production" and "Worldwide sales" are on the same line without changing the size of the sections? The table is here. ::Thanks Jenova20 (email) 14:27, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I took "Worldwide" out of the two column headings and moved it to the section heading instead, now the column headings all fit in as a single line of text. BTW I put the total table width definition back to a fixed number of pixels. Setting it to 100% means it takes up the full page width - which varies by browser and screen size. I hope this meets your requirements. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:45, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The link which you added, with the link text "Integrity Management Methodology", leads to a site about gender equality. Both are worthy causes, but linking to a gender equality site from a page which does not even mention gender appears unhelpful. Maproom (talk) 16:17, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding to Wikipedia

How do i add to wikipedia? Elaine accomAndo — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1011:B10B:2593:9A36:FCF4:4154:82C1 (talk) 15:41, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Start at WP:TUTORIAL. It will explain how. RudolfRed (talk) 16:00, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Beaches of South Walton

Hi. I work for the Official Tourism Development Council for the destination South Walton, which was previously known as Beaches of South Walton. Can you help me update the name of the article to reflect the change? It should be "South Walton, FL." Thank you! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 204.49.124.30 (talk) 15:55, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wow! Beaches of South Walton, Florida is just about the worst example of the most blatant WP:SPAM I've seen on Wikipedia in a very long time! It would be far better to simply start a new article from scratch - after you've first read the WP:BPCOI guideline page. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:07, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    I have reverted it to a slightly better version, but it's still a spamfest.--ukexpat (talk) 16:09, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed, I'm afraid the only cure would be a the application of some TNT. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:12, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've just checked - from the first edit that created the page it has been blatant spam. I see a G11 in the article's (hopefully very brief) future... Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:33, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Edit warring?

When I logged in, I found a notification as follows; "71.2.172.65 mentioned you on Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/Edit warring. Monday at 23:29". However, I can't find where I'm mentioned on WP:AN/EW - is there any way of searching? As far as I know, I'm not at war with anybody. Alansplodge (talk) 16:50, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In this edit, that IP transcluded Wikipedia:Reference desk/Science into that noticeboard, and hence confused quite a few people. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:56, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]
