So, naturalists observe, a flea
Hath smaller fleas that on him prey;
And these have smaller still to bit 'em;
And so proceed ad infinitum.
Thus every poet, in his kind,
Is bit by him that comes behind.
Jonathan Swift, On Poetry: A Rhapsody (1733)

Thank you

I've seen how much you hate paid editors, and continuously making an effort to stop them, I really grateful to have you here on English Wikipedia :D .--AldNonUcallin?☎ 15:43, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Aldnonymous: Thanks for noticing! It's always good to get positive feedback. I will correct you, however, I don't hate paid editors, rather it is paid editing that is hateful. It is tearing down a wonderful structure that has been built up by many volunteers, that provides good information to whoever has access to the internet. If that information is poisoned, and people can't trust us, then the whole structure may collapse.
Your post reminded me of a news story from a couple of decades ago. After the fall of the Soviet Union people started cutting down and selling copper cable from high power electrical transmission systems (nominally still in use). I don't hate those folks who cut down the cable - they were doing what they had to do to survive. I did hate the fact that the transmission systems were being destroyed. It just seemed like there must be a pretty simple enforcement system that would stop the destruction. Everybody likely knew who was buying the cable - these folks could be stopped fairly simply if anybody took the obvious steps. Similarly, most people likely knew who was cutting the cable or where to look to stop folks from cutting more. So the system was messed up, but the parts of the system that led to the destruction of the cable could easily be fixed. The actual folks who cut the cable, in my mind, were less responsible than the authorities who couldn't be bothered to take a few minimal steps. That's my reading in any case.
Thanks again.

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week, for integrity and valiance in the fight against paid editing. Thank you for the great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Coretheapple submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate Smallbones as Editor of the Week for the integrity that he brings to the project, and for his yeoman work - unsung, unrecognized, unappreciated - fighting to preserve Wikipedia from encroachments by paid editors. He has been an editor for more than eight and a half years, and during that time has edited a staggering 11,337 articles at last count. He is not an administrator, heaven only knows why (too much sense?), but a content contributor par excellence, with in excess of 31,000 edits, 65% of them in article space. He is a generalist's generalist, with his top contributions ranging from Bernard Madoff to Media, Pennsylvania. But his prodigious talents as a contributor are not the only assets he brings to the project. No one has fought longer and more valiantly against paid editing. It is a great pleasure to nominate Smallbones for Editor of the Week.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Amendment request archived

Hi Smallbones, an arbitration amendment request you were listed as a party to has been archived to the Wifione case talk page. A motion was proposed but did not gain enough support among arbitrators. For the Arbitration Committee, --L235 (t / c / ping in reply) 01:19, 2 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The "Ultimate Book of Truth"

Re your comment here, Google's Knowledge Graph apparently relies quite heavily on Wikipedia (see [2]), as well as Wikidata [3].

An added dimension here is Wikipedia Zero. You saw the Wifione case. Ponder the implications for hundreds of millions of third-world mobile phone users who can only passively consume Wikipedia, while the only ones in their countries able to read other sources directly – which is also a precondition for editing Wikipedia – are the business and political elites. Whose interests will the content they create serve?

Accessnow.org say, "If it takes off, Wikipedia Zero can, with one fell swoop, change the course of the open internet — and not necessarily for the better. No corporate or single platform — whether it's Facebook or Wikipedia — should be put in charge of curating access to the world's information. Simply put, zero rated content makes zero sense for the future of the open internet and the rights of those who use it."

The Electronic Frontier Foundation, a traditional ally of Wikipedia, says, "Whilst we appreciate the intent behind efforts such as Wikipedia Zero, ultimately zero rated services are a dangerous compromise." Contrast the opinions in that piece with [4].

If you find the prospect of Wikipedia becoming the Ultimate Book of Truth scary, you're not alone. Andreas JN466 21:55, 4 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Statistics - editor gender balance summary

The ones I can bring to mind are:

( All stats F/(F+M) )

  • 2010 WMF/UN university c. 12 %
  • Study corrected above figures c. 16.1 % (something over 20% for adult US)
  • 2011 WMF survey - headline figure 10%, restricting to English WP gives higher figures c. 12%, presumably subject to same correction as 2010 survey
  • 2014/15 WMF "Global south" survey c. 20%
  • User prefs figures, indicate > 20%

Blue Bell Inn

Back in November 2014 when I tried to capture images from the Yeadon Loop (SEPTA station), I took Island Road to the Cobbs Creek Parkway and tried to capture the Blue Bell Inn along the way, and on the way back. I'm looking to spend Saturday getting Philadelphia photos, concentrating on the western part of Center City and maybe going up to Germantown. Faggs Manor

Not sure if you're planning to work on Sir John's article, but it has problems: he was supposedly a Cambridge student at age six and joined the bar association in the same year! Meanwhile, are you sure we had an article on Chaplain Blair's father? Samuel Blair and Samuel Blair (chaplain) have never been moved or deleted, asaside from Blair being moved to Blair (chaplain), so that Blair could become a disambiguation page. Samuel Blair (pastor) has never existed, and Samuel Steel Blair doesn't appear to have anything mentioning either of the clergymen, aside from a simple disambiguation note in the earlier revisions. Besides this, what help or advice could I give? Not sure what help you need or want, although of course I'll try to provide it once I understand what you need. Peer review request

Hi. I had a request for peer review of the Gateway Protection Programme article closed before the article had been reviewed. It was suggested at Wikipedia talk:Peer review that a review could still take place, and that I should ask specific reviewers if they would be interested in providing the review. Would you be interested and willing to do this, by any chance? If not, is there any chance you could add it to the backlog so that it stands a chance of being reviewed by someone else, or is that against the rules? My question was just of interest/curiosity. I did not mind getting the banner, and actually clicked into it to read about the project. It was then that I read about it being sent out to PA IPs. Re: photos

I've just been really busy with job applications, and while I've been able to get out a few times, I've gotten myself a rather horrid backlog; just two days ago I was finally able to work with photos from 28 May, and the stuff I uploaded for Clarion County and surrounding areas is almost two weeks old. With the likelihood of soon having to leave PA, I've been trying to concentrate on the NR sites, and with the Northern Panhandle of West Virginia done, that largely means going to Ohio. If you take a line from Potter County to Somerset County, running through Clearfield and Cambria counties, I've gotten virtually everything west of it: just a quarter of the Somerset County sites remain, the remaining sites in Washington and Fayette are all difficult or impossible of access, and all other counties I've visited 100% of the sites. So...I've made recent trips westward to Athens and Cleveland, but nothing lately in Pennsylvania except this trip, and what I got was before and after a one-day academic conference. Pictures

At first I wondered why you'd use the horse sign in the township article, because it's not particularly representative, but now that I see that it has a farm and municipal building picture, I agree with it. It adds some local color and is mildly humorous. As far as the sign, I have just one idea: radioactive elements like technetium, rutherfordium, and dubnium are transition metals, and this church is apparently in the transition Metal Township between the mountains and the southeast...yes, yes, it's lame, but I can't think of any real explanation. Curiosity

Hi Smallbones. I noticed your comments at Jimbotalk and was a little confused - I've racked my brains over recent cases but I can't think of a case where ArbCom have overruled the TOU on undisclosed paid editing (I rather hope we haven't, since I issue blocks for precisely that reason on a fairly regular basis). Please could you point me in the right direction? It may be that our interpretation of an ArbCom decison is different, in which case some clarification may be needed. Much obliged, Yunshui  11:51, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Please see Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests/Case/Wifione#Paid_editing which says in part:

"6) The Committee has no mandate to sanction editors for paid editing as it is not prohibited by site policies. The arbitration policy prevents the Committee from creating new policy by fiat."

which just seems silly to me. Having a policy on "undisclosed paid editing" (and it is definitely a policy, see WP:TOU) is definitely a (limited) policy on paid editing, but apparently ArbCom disagrees. Note that any policy we have on anything is "limited" in some way, if only by WP:IAR. I asked ArbCom to reconsider (see here) this dictum (it had no bearing on the case since Wifione did his undisclosed paid editing before the change in the TOU).
The vote was 4 to 6 against removing the principle with the reasoning of the six being IMHO all over the place, ranging from (my reading) "this policy has to be reconfirmed by the community before it becomes policy" to "we could never enforce this policy, so just ignore it." Given the 4-6 split and the IMHO illogical reasoning of the six, I don't think that ArbCom will ever try to say this again, but they did say it once. Smallbones(smalltalk) 14:52, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes, Wifione - I wasn't active on that case, which is probably why it slipped my mind. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction. For what it's worth, I'll do my level best in any future cases to ensure that we don't say that again... Yunshui  15:04, 7 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Recant your accusation of Paid editing immediately

You recently made an accusation of Paid editing on my Talk page, disguised as a polite question. ('May I ask if you are a car thief?' is an example of a polite question with obvious accusatory intent.) Not only does this exhibit a lack of good faith but constitutes a personal attack on me specifically, both of which are contrary to Wikipedia standards of civil behavior.

When I first saw your message on my talk page, I was so unprepared for its intent, that I completely mistook your meaning, and assumed you were making me an offer to do paid editing for you, and took you to task about it as a violation of WP guidelines. However, upon further examination of your recent contributions I learned the truth. You had made a minor edit at Vemma at 06:31 2 Oct 2015. Within the hour, you had made very similar entries (7:07 and 7:31) on the talk pages of two users who had previous edits there, namely, Mathglot (last Vemma edit: 2013), and Amsterdad, in both cases asking "politely"—to be sure—whether we engaged in paid editing. Had it been only a single entry on my Talk page, I could perhaps have imagined some kind of screw-up or mistake on your part, but given that you separately edited two User Talk pages and made similar accusations, I cannot see that it could have been a simple error on your part.

There can be no reason whatever for you to have made an accusation, or even to have posed a question to me however politely on this topic. You and I have never interacted before, to my knowledge. As you are an editor with autopatrolled status, ten years seniority and over 35,000 edits, you must know WP policies and guidelines far better than I do. I am utterly unable to account for your rash behavior.

I condemn your harassment and personal attack on my reputation as a Wikipedia editor in the strongest possible terms. I demand you recant and formally apologize to me on my Talk page immediately with a very clear statement of error on your part, or else be prepared to back up your accusation of Paid editing.

I cannot speak for @Amsterdad:, but I call their attention to this comment.

Cordially, Mathglot (talk) 01:34, 3 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, Mathglot, for replying to this much more eloquently than I did. I see now there is no response. Amsterdad (talk) 15:11, 8 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thought you might be amused to see a few images that I've just uploaded from a couple of weeks ago, when I went through Radnor Township in Delaware County, including the two to the right. Nyttend (talk) 13:28, 6 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Second request to recant

This is a second request for you to recant and apologize.

Were I the subject of a WP biography, your barely-veiled implication about paid editing in the form of a polite question would have been rapidly reverted due to the policies covering biographies of living persons, in particular, contentious material that is unsourced or poorly sourced, as you offered no source or evidence whatever. I realize this policy doesn't cover editors, but I am nevertheless a living person, and I strenuously object.

Let's not make a big deal out of this—errare humanum est—just admit your mistake and apologize on my Talk page, and we can move on, no hard feelings. Just to be clear what you're apologizing for: I have no hurt feelings; my reputation as an editor has been damaged by an entry on my talk page implying that I may be a paid editor. You made that entry, so you are responsible for the (ongoing) damage. That's what you're recanting and apologizing for.

Cordially, Mathglot (talk) 00:29, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Nice pics. Coincidence? You know what they say, If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him. That sounds like a good plan to me. :-) Mathglot (talk) 00:42, 7 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks!

I am working on Derry, PA page and would like to add a picture of the Crest in the side bar to the main body title CREST. So far I have had no luck. Do you have any pointers for me? I am new to Wiki, LOL!

after WikiConference USA 2015

Thanks for commenting at the conference on harassment issues. I am interested to follow up and research as we discussed. I'm not an expert on how Wikipedia runs or should run, but I'll be happy to learn in small bites. -- econterms (talk) 23:34, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be checking with several other editors over the next few days. Making progress. Smallbones(smalltalk) 23:38, 15 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'll be happy to get a snapshot of it today, if you'll accept the Wikimedia Commons work of a user who has been banned from English Wikipedia under questionable rationale. - Mister 2001:558:1400:10:B15A:74E8:F4BB:162B (talk) 12:58, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The usual banned editor - I don't accept anything you do on Wikipedia. You've been told several times to keep off this page. Stay off. Smallbones(smalltalk) 13:41, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Stay off of my user talk page. Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:11, 20 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I know nobody likes banned users...

...but please take caution when editing in affect after a banned editor, like you did on MyWikiBiz.. After your attempt to revert the fix of that link, you chose to remove it. However, the reason you provided "the next ref covers it" wasn't entirely true, and your edit was reverted. Please review your edit from an outside-perspective and ask yourself "will this help the content of the encyclopedia, to do this edit" before editing. Thank you, and happy editing! Good advice here for you, Smallbrains. Wake up and try to be a Wikipedia editor, not a vengeance machine. - 2601:42:C100:9D83:7C54:6959:E79:ADC0 (talk) 10:35, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The usual banned editor. Stay off this page Smallbones(smalltalk) 13:43, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And you've been told numerous times to stop spreading lies about a particular banned user, yet you continue to do so. How about you stop first, and then your Talk page will remain pristine? - Mister 2001:558:1400:10:B15A:74E8:F4BB:162B (talk) 13:55, 19 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Philadelphia pagemoves

I've fixed Walnut Street. I'm not going to touch Templetown/CBMoore until you've checked; of course I'll perform this kind of action when you're confident that it's needed, but when you're not yet sure, I don't want to take action only to discover that there was a comparatively simple mistake. Let me know that you've finished checking and that you're confident that this is the correct move, and I'll readily do it. Nyttend (talk) 02:50, 21 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I've made the correction to "ottar", which is how the Gutenberg edition has it in Roughing It. I'd seen it several ways, including "attar" in another edition of "Roughing It", which completely blows the joke. The sentence must have driven copyeditors crazy. Jimbo's talk

When last year did Jimbo tell me I was not to post on his talk page? As you should be aware, he often uses ambiguous language and doesn't ping people. For what should be obvious reasons, given my recent comment there, I don't watchlist his page. - Sitush (talk) 17:09, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Sitush: It was just before the 2014 Wikimania Conference. It may take me awhile, but if you'd like I can find the exact diff. Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:13, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Please do. I probably won't be around much as I am not very well but I'll check back in a day or two. Until then, please let me comment stand. Jimbo can remove it if he wishes. - Sitush (talk) 17:27, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at this, I'm uncertain if "Please go away then" was a request by Jimbo to not post at that page or just a suggestion to stay off the page if Sitush didn't want to see the drama in it. You should ask for clarification in case he meant the latter interpretation. 69.5.131.1 (talk) 17:36, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wikilawyering from an anon? Smallbones(smalltalk) 17:39, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, the IP is pretty much on the same page as me. You're getting into dodgy territory, Smallbones, and it really should not be you who polices what I do for reasons that should be fairly obvious. Like I said, let Jimbo deal with it and stop being his lackey. Apologies for any typos - meds are well kicked in. - Sitush (talk) 00:22, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
And now I have seen your diff, subtly inserted to a place I have already told you I do not watch rather than on this page where I said I would return. You seem unable to parse the English language and you have also ignored subsequent events on my talk page and (understandably) an email. Now back off and reinstate what I said, please. - Sitush (talk) 00:31, 29 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

, anyone not site banned should have their comments left alone or failing that an ANI. I personally would have reverted any removal not done by Jimbo if they were not site banned. Just my opinion but I strongly suggest not doing that again. Hell in a Bucket (talk) 17:51, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I think the ArbCom case last year settled that issue. Jimbo is basically allowed to run his talk page as he wishes, and that includes allowing others to remove trolls and disruptors. If he has any reservations about my actions, he can contact me as he wishes. Smallbones(smalltalk) 18:02, 28 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Last year dealt with a banned user, not a member in good standing. I've readded the comment and will remind you this does not qualify as a 3rr exemption. Please take the issue to the appropriate noticeboard if you wish to contest but I note you've removed apprx 3 times thus far readding will put u over 3rr.
