Fair and Helpful
Thank you so much for helping me with an article (I'm a beginner.) I have no idea what I'm doing but you helped to keep my article up after it was deleted. You also checked back up on it when the references were deleted, I just checked and saw you even helped me on listing them too, I wasn't sure how to do that either. Anyway, thank you. :] Ohthegunsofbrixton (talk) 18:33, 4 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello! While it may be small in the grand scheme of things, I wanted to thank you for drafting the disambiguation page at National and University Library. Disambiguation link notification for December 16

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited List of islands of New Hampshire, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Graft (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

And olive branch & holiday wishes!

Thryduulf, please accept these holiday wishes :)

I've caused this year to end on a chord of disappointment for many, but I hope that despite my mistakes and the differences in opinion and perspectives, and regardless of what the outcome is or in what capacity I can still contribute in the coming year, we can continue working together directly or indirectly on this encyclopedic project, whose ideals are surely carried by both of our hearts. I'm hoping I have not fallen in your esteem to the level where "no hard feelings" can no longer ring true, because I highly respect you and your dedication to Wikipedia, and I sincerely wish you and your loved ones all the best for 2018.

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas and a Prosperous 2018!

Hello Thryduulf, may you be surrounded by peace, success and happiness on this seasonal occasion. Spread the WikiLove by wishing another user a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, whether it be someone you have had disagreements with in the past, a good friend, or just some random person. Sending you a heartfelt and warm greetings for Christmas and New Year 2018.

Photo priority list

Hey Chris, war memorials in order of priority for photos, as requested:

  1. Civil Service Rifles War Memorial (photo from the rear, top priority, currently at FAC)
  2. Rochdale Cenotaph (any decent wide views, I got some reasonable close-ups of the flags but was disappointed with most of my photos; this is TFA on 11 Jan)
  3. Royal Naval Division War Memorial (anything you've got that's well-focused, this will be the next one to work its way through the review system)
  4. Lancashire Fusiliers War Memorial (the drums in particular; I'd like to have this as TFA on 25 April)
  5. Tower Hill Memorial (will be my next project after the RND; I might make a start on it this weekend but it's unlikely be heading to FAC until February at the earliest)

—Those are the highest priority at the minute. After current projects, I have four Lutyens memorials left and I'm really hoping the Cenotaph will have its bronze star by November. Then I might start looking at non-Lutyens memorials (eg Deal, Bury)! Thanks a lot! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 02:58, 30 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your close at ITNC

Hey Thryduulf, I'd like you to reconsider your recent close over at ITNC, to which I'd give a more direct link if brackets worked inside link syntax.

There were eleven supports that did not focus on the current blurbs, which you summarily dismissed with "There is consensus that where an event is not the top level of the sport there needs to be some other indication of importance or significance ..." Given that wording, I fear that you've missed some of the !voting rationales. Two in particular stand out to me:

  • "The fact that this is an amateur university event does not change its huge cultural significance and level of public interest. We may find it strange the an amateur university event whose quality of play is presumably lower than the NFL inspires such interest and occupies such a significant place in American sporting culture, but we should not impose our personal views of what ought to be regarded as a significant sporting event - for public interest and cultural impact are what make sporting events significant."
  • "In the news, article sufficiently updated and is a significant sports event (even though it is not personally of interest to me). Seems to tick all the boxes."

My bolding, obviously.

On the other side, all but five of the opposes were primarily concerned with it being an amateur event, or it being of "low worldwide significance"—which isn't a rule at ITN, which as you know often posts items of limited international significance. Several of those are even on WP:ITNR. Best, Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 04:06, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thryduulf, good close, well done for being bold enough to take on all the usual post-closure combat for this kind of thing. The Rambling Man (talk) 06:58, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Just wanting to second TRM here, solid reasoning, and well done on avoiding the usual nonsense posting of amateur university sports. Fgf10 (talk) 08:16, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
FWIW I support your closing, even though I supported posting. Quality wasn't there, consensus was building against, and we weren't going to cut through the usual anti-American hatred masked as "global significance" this time. Thanks for helping out at ITN. --CosmicAdventure (talk) 11:22, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@The ed17: I've re-read the discussion again, and if anything I'm seeing more consensus against it than I wrote. Yes this has a big place in American sporting culture, but many people pointed out that that would mean we should be posting comparable events from other nation's sporting culture. There was also not a consensus (although relatively little discussion) that the quality of the update was there.
@CosmicAdventure: I didn't see very much anti-American hatred, although I did see people insisting on treating the USA like any other individual nation which I can understand some Americans might interpret as being anti-American (although I'm not saying you personally do/did). Thryduulf (talk) 13:16, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding, though I'd question another person's characterization of this as "combat." Best, Ed [talk] [majestic titan] 14:42, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, and I'd question another person's characterisation of this as "the usual anti-American hatred masked as "global significance"" but your mileage may vary. The Rambling Man (talk) 14:47, 10 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Or, it was bullied into oblivion. You should be ashamed. Abductive (reasoning) 07:20, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Abductive: If you are going to make accusations of bullying you need to be a lot more specific and cite examples. Aspersions and vague rhetoric will not get anyone to change their mind. Thryduulf (talk) 12:26, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd echo TRM's point, despite being on the other side of the nom. With this & #metoo, taking the time to explain your decision is much appreciated. GCG (talk) 14:22, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'd also like to add my appreciation for making two intelligent and well-explained closes on contentious ITN items. Making everyone happy isn't possible, but your closes should satisfy people that their input has been appreciated. --LukeSurl t c 15:06, 11 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your practical objective comment, such a rare thing! Pierre Boulez was a composer, but he was also a performer, and - what is more - a human being, covered by WP:Biography. - I wonder who will tell the arbs that the undefined scope leaves too much room for interpretation. They could focus on very few discussions, outlined by Ritchie in the evidence. I don't know them all, but of those I know, most were no infobox discussions (about an infobox to be inserted or not), but "infobox discussions", debating the removal of a long-standing infobox. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 12:29, 11 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has closed with a consensus that candidates at WP:RFA must disclose whether they have ever edited for pay and that administrators may never use administrative tools as part of any paid editing activity, except when they are acting as a Wikipedian-in-Residence or when the payment is made by the Wikimedia Foundation or an affiliate of the WMF.
  • Editors responding to threats of harm can now contact the Wikimedia Foundation's emergency address by using Special:EmailUser/Emergency. If you don't have email enabled on Wikipedia, directly contacting the emergency address using your own email client remains an option.

Did you know?

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Screenshot showing some changes, in the two-column wikitext diff display

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Toggle button showing visual and wikitext options; visual option is selected

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

Screenshot showing the same changes to an article. Most changes are highlighted with text formatting.

This screenshot shows the same edit as the wikitext diff. The visual diff highlights the removal of one word and the addition of a new sentence. An arrow indicates that the paragraph changed location.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode, which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and improving the visual diff tool. Their work board is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

  • The 2017 wikitext editor is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. It has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. The team have been comparing the performance of different editing environments. They have studied how long it takes to open the page and start typing. The study uses data for more than one million edits during December and January. Some changes have been made to improve the speed of the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual editor. Recently, the 2017 wikitext editor opened fastest for most edits, and the 2010 WikiEditor was fastest for some edits. More information will be posted at mw:Contributors/Projects/Editing performance.
  • The visual diff tool was developed for the visual editor. It is now available to all users of the visual editor and the 2017 wikitext editor. When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [1]
  • Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [2]
  • The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

Let's work together

  • The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
  • Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.
  • The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. This has already been enabled at the English Wikipedia. If you want columns for a long list of footnotes on this wiki, you can use either <references /> or the plain (no parameters) {{reflist}} template. If you edit a different wiki, you can request multi-column support for your wiki. [3]

Administrators' newsletter – March 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2018).

Administrator changes

added Lourdes
removed AngelOfSadnessBhadaniChris 73CorenFridayMidomMike V
† Lourdes has requested that her admin rights be temporarily removed, pending her return from travel.

Guideline and policy news

  • The autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) is scheduled to end on 14 March 2018. The results of the research collected can be read on Meta Wiki.
  • Community ban discussions must now stay open for at least 24 hours prior to being closed.
  • A change to the administrator inactivity policy has been proposed. Under the proposal, if an administrator has not used their admin tools for a period of five years and is subsequently desysopped for inactivity, the administrator would have to file a new RfA in order to regain the tools.
  • A change to the banning policy has been proposed which would specify conditions under which a repeat sockmaster may be considered de facto banned, reducing the need to start a community ban discussion for these users.

Technical news

  • CheckUsers are now able to view private data such as IP addresses from the edit filter log, e.g. when the filter prevents a user from creating an account. Previously, this information was unavailable to CheckUsers because access to it could not be logged.
  • The edit filter has a new feature contains_all that edit filter managers may use to check if one or more strings are all contained in another given string.

Obituaries

  • Bhadani (Gangadhar Bhadani) passed away on 8 February 2018. Bhadani joined Wikipedia in March 2005 and became an administrator in September 2005. While he was active, Bhadani was regarded as one of the most prolific Wikipedians from India.

Info update

Hello T. First I wanted to let you know that I have not seen a domain sales link work its way into any reFill fixes that I have made since the one you found last month. I was hoping that it may have been a one off but then I noticed this thread Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)/Archive 58#Strange reference, looking to me like a disguised spam where something like it looks to have happened again. As we are not programmers I thought I would bring it to your attention in case there is any info there that might be of use to you. I hope you have a pleasant weekend. MarnetteD|Talk 06:27, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers for the heads-up I'll take look and see if it's of use. Thryduulf (talk) 12:29, 10 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Appeal of topic ban

You were kind enough to offer advice during my topic ban appeal earlier in the year[4] You suggested I work on an appeal in my userspace, is this what you had in mind?[5] --Iantresman (talk) 17:14, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

  • Yes, that's the sort of thing. I've made a couple of small copyedits for you (it was easier than explaining them!), but other than that I'd consider flehsing it out a little more summarising what you've learned from your interactions at the teahouse, etc. In terms of lifting the ban, I supsect some people might consider you a little light on article-space edits but that's not guaranteed and I didn't spot anything significant from what I spot checked. Thryduulf (talk) 18:06, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately there was nothing constructive from my interaction with the Help Desk and Tea House. A bit of a long shot, would you consider being a mentor, or something similar for me, which I would mention in my appeal? I'd keep discussion to a minimum. More about me here.[6] --Iantresman (talk) 18:27, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nothing against you personally, but I'm not really interested in being a mentor at the moment. Wikipedia:Adopt-a-user/Adoptee's Area seems to be the place to look to find someone who is willing. Thryduulf (talk) 18:36, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the suggestion. --Iantresman (talk) 22:45, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – April 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2018).

Administrator changes

added 331dotCordless LarryClueBot NG
removed Gogo DodoPb30SebastiankesselSeicerSoLando

Guideline and policy news

  • Administrators who have been desysopped due to inactivity are now required to have performed at least one (logged) administrative action in the past 5 years in order to qualify for a resysop without going through a new RfA.
  • Editors who have been found to have engaged in sockpuppetry on at least two occasions after an initial indefinite block, for whatever reason, are now automatically considered banned by the community without the need to start a ban discussion.
  • The notability guideline for organizations and companies has been substantially rewritten following the closure of this request for comment. Among the changes, the guideline more clearly defines the sourcing requirements needed for organizations and companies to be considered notable.
  • The six-month autoconfirmed article creation trial (ACTRIAL) ended on 14 March 2018. The post-trial research report has been published. A request for comment is now underway to determine whether the restrictions from ACTRIAL should be implemented permanently.

Technical news

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee is considering a change to the discretionary sanctions procedures which would require an editor to appeal a sanction to the community at WP:AE or WP:AN prior to appealing directly to the Arbitration Committee at WP:ARCA.

Miscellaneous

  • A discussion has closed which concluded that administrators are not required to enable email, though many editors suggested doing so as a matter of best practice.
  • The Foundations' Anti-Harassment Tools team has released the Interaction Timeline. This shows a chronologic history for two users on pages where they have both made edits, which may be helpful in identifying sockpuppetry and investigating editing disputes.

Administrators' newsletter – May 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (April 2018).

Administrator changes

added None
removed ChochopkCoffeeGryffindorJimpKnowledge SeekerLankiveilPeridonRjd0060

Guideline and policy news

  • The ability to create articles directly in mainspace is now indefinitely restricted to autoconfirmed users.
  • A proposal is being discussed which would create a new "event coordinator" right that would allow users to temporarily add the "confirmed" flag to new user accounts and to create many new user accounts without being hindered by a rate limit.

Technical news

  • AbuseFilter has received numerous improvements, including an OOUI overhaul, syntax highlighting, ability to search existing filters, and a few new functions. In particular, the search feature can be used to ensure there aren't existing filters for what you need, and the new equals_to_any function can be used when checking multiple namespaces. One major upcoming change is the ability to see which filters are the slowest. This information is currently only available to those with access to Logstash.
  • When blocking anonymous users, a cookie will be applied that reloads the block if the user changes their IP. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. This currently only occurs when hard-blocking accounts.
  • The block notice shown on mobile will soon be more informative and point users to a help page on how to request an unblock, just as it currently does on desktop.
  • There will soon be a calendar widget at Special:Block, making it easier to set expiries for a specific date and time.

Tower Hill

Hey Chris, if you can make it to Tower Hill for me again, I need photos of the seven relief sculptures on the walls of the sunken garden, individually and two or three to a photo, so I can make a gallery of them in the article. I could also do with better photos of the north end of the sunken garden, and possibly the sentries at the top of the steps. If you feel like reading through Tower Hill Memorial to make sure it all makes sense etc I'd appreciate it but I'd understand if you don't have the time or inclination. And we must sort out some dates for you to come down to visit! All the best my friend, HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:36, 21 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@HJ Mitchell: Photos from Tower Hill now on Commons see Commons:Category Tower Hill Memorial and new subcategories and Commons:User:Thryduulf/Tower Hill Memorial, hopefully I managed to get what you were looking for. I've not had chance to read the article yet, but probably will do tomorrow. I'll contact you on facebook re dates. Thryduulf (talk) 00:01, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Interested to hear your opinion

Hi Thryduulf, I was wondering if you have looked at the this thread and the current case request recently; I am curious to hear your opinion as I seem to remember British politics-related topics are one of your interest fields. Regards, Alex Shih (talk) 02:12, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Alex Shih: Thanks for the heads-up. I've been AFK pretty much all day so I've only just seen this and I'm nowhere near awake enough now to grok a long AN/I thread. I should get time to look tomorrow if things go to plan. Thryduulf (talk) 23:58, 28 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Gore (film) for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Gore (film) is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Gore (film) until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. KTC (talk) 08:35, 30 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrators' newsletter – June 2018

News and updates for administrators from the past month (May 2018).

Administrator changes

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • IP-based cookie blocks should be deployed to English Wikipedia in June. This will cause the block of a logged-out user to be reloaded if they change IPs. This means in most cases, you may no longer need to do /64 range blocks on residential IPv6 addresses in order to effectively block the end user. It will also help combat abuse from IP hoppers in general. For the time being, it only affects users of the desktop interface.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation's Anti-Harassment Tools team will build granular types of blocks in 2018 (e.g. a block from uploading or editing specific pages, categories, or namespaces, as opposed to a full-site block). Feedback on the concept may be left at the talk page.
  • There is now a checkbox on Special:ListUsers to let you see only users in temporary user groups.
  • It is now easier for blocked mobile users to see why they were blocked.

Arbitration

  • A recent technical issue with the Arbitration Committee's spam filter inadvertently caused all messages sent to the committee through Wikipedia (i.e. Special:EmailUser/Arbitration Committee) to be discarded. If you attempted to send an email to the Arbitration Committee via Wikipedia between May 16 and May 31, your message was not received and you are encouraged to resend it. Messages sent outside of these dates or directly to the Arbitration Committee email address were not affected by this issue.

Semi-protected edit request on 2 June 2018

Dear Thryduulf - I'm writing about this page which you have semi-protected.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ravi_Shankar_(poet)

What you have called persistent disruptive editing is simply not true. The attempt to add the most important detail in Shankar's bio has continually been changed by an editor called ScrapIronIV who knows the subject and is attempting to add erroneous information to the page. The fact that Shankar founded the world's oldest electronic journal of the arts, Drunken Boat, absolutely should be included on his biography page. The website is probably the most important thing that Shankar has done.

Also, there have been repeated attempts to add false information to this page. Shankar was never accused of or convicted of theft of school funds. This is an out-and-out lie. According to the the BLP guidelines, all information about living persons needs to be accurate. This site was already edited by WingedGodric to reflect the true facts of the case.

How is it possible that one person who is biased and knows the subject continues to have the authority to curate this biography? How is that person still an editor? Please look at the history of the Talk Page and revert back to the earlier version by Winged Godric, and include this fact of Drunken Boat on his bio page.

Again you can see something about the history of this magazine here: [1]

Thanks for your attention. 73.61.195.122 (talk) 13:52, 2 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:MOS:IDENTITY listed at Redirects for discussion

An editor has asked for a discussion to address the redirect Wikipedia:MOS:IDENTITY. Since you had some involvement with the Wikipedia:MOS:IDENTITY redirect, you might want to participate in the redirect discussion if you have not already done so. — Godsy (TALKCONT) 21:49, 3 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

RfD The Telegraph

At Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion#The Telegraph (disambiguation) you wrote, in response to me, "...is something I can only describe as arrogance". I object to that since it is clearly meant to mean that I am arrogant, and I regard that as a (mild) personal attack and at the very least uncivil. Your spelling errors in that comment may indicate you were in haste and may not have properly considered the impact of your words. Please don't do it again. Shhhnotsoloud (talk)

I can't recall whether I was in haste or not, but while the language was perhaps slightly harsher than necessary the sentiment is one that I firmly stand by (and have stood by for years): We must always do what is best for the readers, without exception. Per WP:IAR if a "rule" prevents you from improving the encyclopaedia, ignore it. In this case there isn't even a "rule" to ignore, just the dislike some people have for a redirect that directly benefits readers, and if you put your personal preferences above the readers then Wikipedia is not the project for you. Thryduulf (talk) 10:52, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I don't want to rehash the argument. I want you to know that I interpreted your original comments as uncivil and personal. I gave you an easy way out to apologise gracefully—and asked you not to do it again—but you have actually now made it worse by referring to me as "some people" (which is rude) and talking about my personal preferences. Stop it. Please stick to referring to policy and guidance and interpretations thereof. Shhhnotsoloud (talk) 13:21, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I will refrain from commenting further on this here as I do not think it will be productive. Thryduulf (talk) 13:22, 4 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
