::It is also not without its controversy, because many people feel that the introduction of paid editing means that the person or company doing the paying expects a certain result in terms of point-of-view, and thus taints the trustworthiness of Wikipedia's articles because of the inherent conflict of interest that paying someone to advertise your company or ideas (or conversely, to pay someone to attack your enemies and competitors), especially where such editing is done by people who know Wikipedia well enough to game the system effectively. It's one thing where a PR director, unfamiliar with Wikipedia, shows up to advertise their company. We can stop that. It's another thing entirely where people who know all of the ins-and-outs of Wikipedia enough to avoid detection or use social pressures to give the illusion of consensus, or other such manipulations, in order to present a particular version of an article. We have enough of that going on by people who just have an axe to grind or do so because they have strong feelings about a topic. To introduce a financial incentive for people to do so seems particularly insidious among many Wikipedians. --<font style="color:#000099">Jayron</font><font style="color:#009900">32</font> 15:06, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

Getting A Message On The Watchlist

Hello, I was just wondering on how I can submit a request for a message to appear on everyone's watchlist. Does anyone know?--Dom497 (talk) 00:54, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I can't imagine anyone who has that capability (admin level or above; might need to be a developer) actually agreeing to this, because I can't imagine anything that you want to push to lots of people that is so unique that anyone would agree to this. If, for example, you're hoping to recruit editors for a particular purpose, please note that there are dozens and dozens of general WikiProjects that would want to do similar recruiting, not to mention editors concerned with various backlogs, editors working on specific types of errors, etc., etc.
And, to answer your question directly, I believe that there is no way to submit such a request, because - as far as I know - nothing other than administrative messages (and fundraising appeals) are 'ever pushed out widely to editors, and that's not likely to change. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 03:45, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The page you need is Wikipedia:Watchlist notices, but you'll need to show significant support for displaying whatever notice you have in mind. Notices and requests are also displayed at the Wikipedia:Community portal. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:14, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

sending a notifications to thank someone for their edit

Is there a way to disable this idiotic and incredibly badly placed function (sending a notifications to thank someone for their edit)? I must have hit it accidentally 5 times in the last day or so when I meant to UNDO a bad edit by an spa, troll or vandal. I mean, seriously, why put those two functions next to each other? searching Mormon church in Dubai

Hi everyone have good day This is prem originally from Nepal. Nowadays I am working in Dubai. My traditional religion is Hindu. so I like Mormon that's way I am searching people for guide me Mormon organization.

Wikipedia doesn't seem to have any material related to Mormanism in Dubai, but this news story and this blog may be helpful for you. This map here seems to indicate that there are no official Mormon temples in Dubai itself, but if you are interested in Mormonism in general, the main website of the LDS Church is at http://mormon.org, and if you contact the people at that website, I am fairly confident you can get more direct help with your question. --Jayron32 06:04, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Please do your own homework.
Welcome to the Wikipedia Help desk. Your question appears to be a homework question. I apologize if this is a misevaluation, but it is our policy here not to do others' homework, but merely to aid them in doing it themselves. Letting someone else do your homework does not help you learn how to solve such problems.
Please attempt to solve the problem yourself first. You can search Wikipedia or search the Web.
If you need help with a specific part of your homework, the Reference desk can help you grasp the concept. Do not ask knowledge questions here, just those about using Wikipedia. -- John of Reading (talk) 10:12, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Quality scale.

I would like to know who rates Wikipedia articles on the Quality scale, please? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 5.49.203.239 (talk) 10:47, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Initially, members of Wikiprojects; see WP:Quality. - David Biddulph (talk) 10:51, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
With the exception of the "Good" and "Featured" assessments, any editor is welcome to help out with Wikipedia's quality assessment process, by putting an initial rating or updating a rating on any articles. (There are some WikiProjects - Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history is perhaps the best example - who prefer that only their own members handle ratings beyond "stub" and "start", but I suspect this is well beyond what your question was about, unless you're a registered editor who forgot to sign in.) -- John Broughton (♫♫) 14:35, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a new page that will contain My company Services & Information???

Dear Wiki,

Kindly provide me the guideline & steps to create a company page. What are the parameters of Creating a company page?? How can I publish the same in Wikipedia??

Is there any restrictions??

What are the rules of SEO here??

Is the same can be edited by others too??

Please advise...

Wikipedia isn't a business directory. There are no "company pages" - there are some articles about companies, written from a neutral perspective by (as far as possible) independent editors with no conflict of interest. If your company meets Wikipedia's inclusion requirements then someone will write an article about it sooner or later - that someone should not be you. You can make a request for an article to be create here. Yunshui  12:58, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And to add to what Yunshui said and answer some of your other questions: there are no rules of SEO here: Wikipedia does not care in the slightest about SEO; and with very few exceptions all articles may be edited by anybody. That is why it is called the Free Encyclopaedia. --ColinFine (talk) 14:36, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Most edits that are intended for SEO will be removed as they constitute promotion and/or vandalism (in the latter case I'm thinking of things like hidden text). --Orange Mike | Talk 14:52, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

images flagged by bot

Within the last week, several of my images have been flagged by a bot with "Flagging file as potentially eligible for transfer to Commons." Do I need to do something? Kmzundel (talk) 14:01, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, you don't. But you might consider putting pictures that you upload in the future directly on Commons, and save the bot some work. Commons is the preferred place for media, because then they are available to other-language Wikipedia projects. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 14:40, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I think the most recent image that I uploaded was uploaded to Commons. I didn't know to do that on ones that I uploaded previously, but now I do.  :-) Kmzundel (talk) 15:16, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think you are asking something about details of a particular software system (EzeeFrontDesk). Wikipedia does not have an article on that system at present. If the system is notable - that is, it has been written about in reliable places like newspapers and magazines - then Wikipedia could have an article on it, if somebody wanted to write one; but even then it is unlikely that the article would contain technical details about features of the system. Sorry. --ColinFine (talk) 14:45, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do you edit the title of a page?

Our brand has a page on Wikipedia & we'd like to edit it. Any insight? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rstuppy (talkcontribs) 15:52, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The title of a page can be altered by moving the article to a new name (see WP:MOVE for more info). However, if you're attempting to edit an article about yourself I suggest you read our conflict of interest guidelines. While not forbidden, it is discouraged. — Richard BB 15:56, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Forgot the name of an article

I am searching for an article, but I don't remember the name of it. I only remember 2 words that were in the article: tiger and lion. There was also an image on it. I have described the image lots of times, but just let me know if I'm allowed to describe it again. Any way, how can I find this article?--Peta8 (talk) 17:07, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried the search facility? [1] AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:10, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you are still looking for the same article that you asked about in February, then this search might be better - articles containing the words "lion" and "tiger", with the words "list" and "characters" in the name of the article. -- John of Reading (talk) 17:16, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Undo redirect page

Right now, Keel laying redirects to a section of the Keel page. I want to create an article on Keel laying that uses the appropriate material from Keel, as well as some new material. The new article will be much more useful than the existing redirect. I know how to create a new article, but I don't know how to deal with the existing redirect. Who can help? Lou Sander (talk) 18:49, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can go here: [2] to land on the redirect page without getting redirected. Then, just edit it like any other page. Remove the redirect code and add in the material for the article. RudolfRed (talk) 19:10, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
More generally, you can get to a redirect page this way: in the Wikipedia search box, put the name of the redirect page (let's say "A"). When you run the search, you'll end up at "B" (because of the redirect). Just under the title for article B will be the words " (Redirected from 'A'.)" The word "A" will be a link. When you click on that link, you'll be on the redirect page, and able to edit it. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 00:17, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Download a page in ODT format

Hi, folks! The right bar in Wikipedia lets users to download a page in PDF ("Download as PDF") or HTML ("Printable version"). How can I download it as ODT? Or to be more precise, can you change the system to a single button called "Download / print", so users can choose the file type? Thanks! --NaBUru38 (talk) 19:02, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I somehow fail to see the usecase for this proposal. Why would somebody want a wikipage in ODT format? And can't applications like LibreOffice/OpenOffice.org import the HTML of the printable version anyway? --AKlapper (WMF) (talk) 19:51, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
While Wikipedia could, in theory, add yet support for yet another format, there would need to be demonstrated demand for that feature - the programmers here have enough on their plate without being asked to implement things that only a very few users want.
In this case, there seem to be plenty of pdf to odt converters out there (I did a Google search on "pdf to odt") to accomplish want you want, albeit with some extra steps.-- John Broughton (♫♫) 00:07, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to I caption a picture

How do I caption a picture to list everyone who appears in the picture? 108.0.244.168 (talk) 19:45, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Adding the parameter |alt=put the names here to the end of the will solve this. jcc (tea and biscuits) 20:05, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
AFAIK the text one places after |alt= is invisible in displayed images to sighted readers (though it may be displayed when images are switched off or non-working), and is generally for the use of screen readers by the visual impaired. See WP:ALT.

The typical method for adding a caption under the picture is to use the wikimarkup for a thumbnail and include a caption, in a form like:

You might identify the people in the photo's caption with words indicating location therein, e.g., "...George Harrison (right) ... John Lennon (middle) ... Ringo Starr (left)..." For an image with many people, barring making a truly bloated caption, I don't know of any solution, unless you can talk about the people in the image in the prose of the article.

Just a sidenote but there is a great tool at the Wikimedia:Commons (where free images should be uploaded; images hosted there can be used here natively) for annotating images, which would be one good solution to naming everyone who appears in a picture, where there are many, but it has not been enabled for display at Wikipedia. See Commons:Help:Gadget-ImageAnnotator.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:51, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

CSS hover states

Hi, I'm working on the article Chloroplast, and am trying to add some interactive elements like clickable gene maps, etc. I want to know how to specify a hover state in wikimarkup CSS, so that when a user hovers over a molecule or something in a diagram, it will display some hover indication, and be a link to the article about that molecule. I already know how to stack images and make links (in fact, I think it's very possible to do this without the hover states), I'm just asking specifically how to specify a hover state, because I find image maps very hard for users because you never know where what you click on will take you.—Kelvinsong (talk) 20:03, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You should never restrict content to users based on their CSS support. In cases of text that might be seen as extraneous to the point of impacting navigation negatively, you could use something like Hidden. In this case, though, I suggest you just add the information normally without obstructing it in any way. Scarce2 (talk) 20:06, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think you understand what I mean. Here's an example without the hover states. When you hover over a molecule, and click on it, it will take you to the molecule's article. What I want to do is make it so the images of the molecules change opacity or something whenever a user is hovering over it, so people know what they're clicking on.
Also, I'm not sure by what you mean by "normally or "obstructive".—Kelvinsong (talk) 21:23, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Edit count is not showing deleted edits

I see that the user edit-count tool has moved from Toolserver to something called tools.wmflabs.org, and is now at http://tools.wmflabs.org/xtools/pcount/index.php. That is fine, but it is now showing every editor's count of deleted edits as zero, even for editors with thousands of deleted edits. Does anyone know why? Does anyone know if anything is being done about it? Does anyone know who to contact about it? JamesBWatson (talk) 20:07, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The footer on that page links to User:X!, and it appears they are the person responsible for the tool. Scarce2 (talk) 20:09, 4 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category:2007 films

Category:2007 films uses Filmyr. It's deliberate it shows five years to each side and then jumps to 10 years. There is a bullet to indicate a difference when it makes the jump. I guess it's a compromise between making a limited number of links and making it possible to quickly jump decades by clicking through multiple categories. Author-linking biographical articles on German Wikipedia to an article on English Wikipedia

I would like to authorlink the names of two German scholars to their book citations in an article on English Wikipedia. Both scholars have biographical articles on German Wikipedia but not here (at least not yet). Is there any way to set up an authorlink to their respective articles on German Wikipedia? Thanks. Ignocrates (talk) 00:55, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. You you can make a link to any language Wikipedia article simply by prefixing the language code for that Wikipedia after a colon. So, any article on the German Wikipedia is linked by :de:EXACT NAME OF GERMAN ARTICLE and you would pipe the link so that the code is not displayed. For example, to link to the German Wikipedia article on Roger Waters, you would type Roger Waters.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:00, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I get it as far as a wiki link inside the article content, but what about an authorlink inside a citation? For example:
• Pape, Wilhelm (1880). Handwörterbuch der griechischen Sprache (in German). Braunschweig. ISBN 978-1-174-44362-6.
I would like to set this up as | authorlink = Wilhelm Pape | inside the citation but have it target the Wilhelm Pape article in German Wikipedia. Ignocrates (talk) 05:12, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
authorlink = :de:Wilhelm Pape seems to work. -- John of Reading (talk) 05:22, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Any category that you want to display must have a colon prefixed in the markup. So, if you look at the link Jayon32 used above in edit mode, you will see (emphasis mine): :Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit. What you would have done when you added it without the colon was place your userpage into the category (but in this case you didn't but just created a red link, because you included a period at the end of the name, so it wouldn't have linked properly even with the colon). This is also true for file names (without the prefixed colon the image displays).--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 02:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, while it appears you've been somewhat active in editing that page lately, thank you for stopping and requesting help from other editors. Maybe you noticed our recommendations to editors who have a conflict of interest? I took a look at the page you mentioned and noticed some recent activity that 1) redirects the Lena Abhilash article to Lena (actress), and 2) that removes the information you've requested to be removed. It's fine to rename the article, but I'm confused why you are requesting that your full name and information about your spouse be removed. Are you not married? Is that not your spouse? If you are notable enough to have an article at Wikipedia, then information such as your birth name/married/current name is likely to be in the public record, is verifiable, and may be considered relevant. (See: Madonna, Cher, and magician Teller.) Wikipedia is neither a vanity press, nor a promotional site, so if you are notable enough to warrant the attention of an article, you kind of have to accept the good (notoriety and fame) with the bad (uncomfortable truths), as Wikipedia is not censored. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 06:49, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to argue against you on including spouses name, but looking at the article, it seems reasonable to mention him, since he also had some success in films. So I´ll agree with you instead. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 11:25, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

However, if you're thinking of creating a page on 'Certified Gangsta Mixtapes', you should also read read WP:Conflict of Interest, and consider what it says quite carefully. The Beatles Butcher Cover

The Main reason for the Beatles Butcher was that the Beatles were disgusted with the Emi American division Capitol Records, remixing there songs to suit Am Radio. "I Feel Fine" and "She's a Woman" are two prime examples, with a ridiculous amount of reverb. They were also very displeased and angered by the american release of "Help" which contained instrumental tracks which had no part of a Beatles Album. They felt the fans were being ripped off to make more money for Capitol. In order to show there disgust, The Butcher cover with meat and baby dolls heads represent, there songs being butchered by the record company.Danfab4[1] — Preceding unsigned comment added by Danfab4 (talkcontribs) 08:54, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Concerning the Blackface article

Good day,

There has been recently in the past few weeks a controversy concerning a comedy award show in Quebec. Since then, the blackface Wikipedia page has been edited with a particular bias against Quebec. The edit also contains false information. I had tried to make a change to a less biased entry but my change was rejected as possible vandalism. Can you assist? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.30.238.100 (talk) 11:22, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It isn't clear what article, but you can post your comments to the article's talk page. It is possible that you didn't leave an adequate edit summary, and an edit without an edit summary is sometimes quickly concluded to be vandalism. Robert McClenon (talk) 11:34, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
As that IP has only made one other edit, it's probably safe to assume that they are referring to this edit to the Blackface article. It was reverted by ClueBot, and the edit summary gives a link you can follow to report a false positive. Rojomoke (talk) 12:19, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Writing own biographical article on user page

Is a user allowed to write their own biographical article on their user page? I just happened to notice that someone is writing her own biographical article, in proper Wikipedia format for a biographical article in article space, on her user page. I am assuming that this is permitted, and that there is no BLP issue because she is her own source, and notability is not required to be an editor. (Now, if she moves the biography to article space, notability is an issue.) Robert McClenon (talk) 15:09, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, that may not be permitted; see WP:FAKEARTICLE for the relevant guidelines. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:13, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I posted a Level 1 Note on her talk page about creating an inappropriate page at User:Silvina luna video qwerty. It's a tricky situation because her user page is normally her own, except that it looks like a BLP. There isn't a BLP problem if she is her own source, but it does seem to be contrary to policy. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:23, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
She's moved it to a sandbox. (She's still way too obscure to meet WP:ENTERTAINER, in my opinion; but the userpage issue has been properly addressed.) --Orange Mike | Talk 17:35, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very very much,

Since you work for with the artist, you have a strong conflict of interest (WP:COI) and therefore should avoid writing the article. I would suggest that you seek help from a neutral party and more specifically one that can read Hebrew such as those at Wikipedia:WikiProject Hebrew languages. Dismas|(talk) 15:55, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is no process for creating articles via e-mail. The easiest way to create this one would be to contact one of En Wikipedia's users who speak Hebrew (see Category:User he) and ask them if they would translate the He Wikipedia version for you. If you already have English text, please use the Articles for creation process to create the article.--ukexpat (talk) 15:57, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
From what I can see via a Google translation, there could be problems with such an article. Note that content must based on published material - we don't generally use CV's and the like as sources. We'd also need third-party published sources to indicate that our notability guidelines are met. AndyTheGrump (talk) 16:00, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Reverse T3

Hello! I have written an encyclopedic article on reverse T3 which should do a very good job of replacing the stub currently present. Its coverage, for comparison, is far more comprehensive than William's Endocrinology, 11th Ed. The paper is well-referenced (some 100 citations) and academically is progressive but fair and balanced. My reviewer likes it a lot! I am no stranger to Wiki but have only once before edited and never overhauled an article. I will, of course, delay this submission until mastering such challenges (for me) as how to enter illustrations from elsewhere in Wiki. However, I would be absolutely delighted to correspond or converse with someone at your end.

• First, I want to be sure I am following proper etiquette in making such a large submission
• Secondarily, it would be lovely if anyone there can take pity on my plight and chose to expedite my learning process!

I have the article in MS Word and on PDF, by the way, if you wish to review it. I have done my best to present the information in Wiki format. Thanks so much! Njmcdaniel (talk) 18:27, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I fear that "academically .. progressive" sounds as if it may mean "original research", something that is unwelcome in Wikipedia. Even a review article of the length you suggest might be excessive, while the article on T3 has only 14 references. But it would be easier to comment if we could see your article – is your pdf visible on the web anywhere? Maproom (talk) 20:34, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You should put the article into User:Njmcdaniel/sandbox. There are tools to convert Microsoft Word or pdf documents to the format used in Wikipedia (that is, to a format compatible with our software - MediaWiki) - see WP:EIW#Import, if you want to avoid doing this by hand.
But, to repeat - you absolutely must not include your own analysis, theories, and/or conclusions about the subject. And that includes your own illustrations; any text that refers to those illustrations almost certainly should be deleted. Keep in mind that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a place for people to publish their own works. One good way to see what should be in an article is to take a look at several of Wikipedia's best articles that in the area of biology of medicine.
It's quite possible that what is appropriate for Wikipedia is an article that uses only 10 or 20 percent of what you've written. If so, and if you're willing to reduce your article to what is needed here, then we would very much like for you to share that with the entire world, through an improved Wikipedia article. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 21:51, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

False information on Wikipedia page

You have a page for an online predator, masquerading as a legitimate person. This predator sends potential victims to this false page as a mode of luring them. How do you/will you safeguard the public from predators, if you do not investigate the veracity of your pages? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.20.54.150 (talk) 20:05, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

According to his history, he is referring to Charles Bane, Jr.. Taketa (talk) 20:26, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see that 70 has made a series of edits to Charles Bane, Jr., which have all been (justly, IMO) reverted as unconstructive or vandalism. 70, if you want to be taken seriously, you could start by explaining on the article's talk page why you regard Mr. Bane as a "predator". Maproom (talk) 20:44, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But before doing that, please read Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons - you must not make unsourced allegations about living individuals anywhere on Wikipedia, including talk pages. AndyTheGrump (talk) 20:48, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's a horrible article though. After removing two of the online citations (one to a blank blog, one to a keyword search) we are left with two blog posts of the subject's poems and one HuffPost review of the subject's single published work. In view of the total lack of sources for any of the biographical claims made in the article other than the fact that he is a published poet, I intend to reduce this BLP to a stub. - Karenjc 21:01, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And now that stub has been prodded, which seems fair. - Karenjc 21:14, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Articles on Soccer Goalkeepers

Hi, I just started a blog and was doing research for it through your site. It was about goalkeepers in soccer and I was looking for information regarding clean sheets kept over a career of several players. However, whoever made these articles still has "goals" as the main stat for keepers. Of course they aren't going to score goals, they should have things like "saves", "clean sheet", etc, but none of this can be found. My real problem is just that nowhere online has any reliable data on this topic and was hoping you guys would. The main complaint is, at the very least, goals should not be the main point of summmary for keepers. Just one example where this is a problem is for Gianluigi Buffon's page where the his appearances by year are followed by his goals for that year. Should be clean sheets kept, not goals. Please fix this. Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by 74.139.36.215 (talk) 23:05, 5 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

WP terminology

Hey, was wondering if my fellow editors knew of any specific Wikipedia terminology/expression/slang/shortcuts to describe the sneaky re-submission of contested information days, weeks, months after an objection has been raised and a discussion has been initiated. I don't think it's exactly vandalism, it's more like long-term POV-pushing, or trying to subversively inject specific, preferred phrasing into an article, without actually participating in the discussion. Weird question, maybe. Thanks, Cyphoidbomb (talk) 03:03, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe a "slow edit war"? RJFJR (talk) 18:05, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No bot is needed at all. There is a detailed flowchart at User:Anne Delong/AfcBox. Messages left in various places. Maybe it's a dead issue. —Anne Delong (talk) 18:50, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If a bot isn't needed, then what you do need is an admin who is willing to edit the existing script. You might start with whoever has edited it in the past (and ask him/her on his/her user talk page; otherwise you might put up a note at WP:VPT asking for someone to help. Or even post at WP:AN, I suppose, though that should be the last resort. NPOV help needed for Nimbuzz.

I have recently written a new article for the instant messenger Nimbuzz from scratch. Being aware that previous variations of the article have been deleted 7 times for NPOV and NOTIBILITY issues, from the start I tried to be neutral in tone. I followed the style of Viber and WeChat among others.

However, other editors disagree. The article now has a advert tag, and the DYK I submitted has stalled with the same issue. I require assistance as I can not see how to improve the text any further. JoltColaOfEvil (talk) 06:21, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have made some changes, to make the article look a bit less like an advertisement. Something which needs adding, which I can't do myself as I don't know enough about it, is to explain that the company generates its revenue from the advertisements it delivers alongside the messages. Maproom (talk) 06:50, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
• Thanks for your help!
• I have re-cited the 150 million users claim from another source.
• I have expanded and provided two additional citations for the companies source of revenue.
• I'm unsure why you have completely removed the awards section. I spent some time putting that together. Several of the previous deletions of this page were done due to lack of proved notibility, and thus showing that the product had won several industry awards seemed important.
• My submitted DYK hook you have altered to "to be closer to the majority of its anticipated users". Isn't that a bit crystal ball gazing? As it was it was directly cited, now it is not. JoltColaOfEvil (talk) 07:48, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Your choice of following the examples of Viber and WeChat was a unfortunate as Viber is barely a C-class and WeChat hasn't been rated yet. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:24, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Well that was mostly for layout, but I take your point. JoltColaOfEvil (talk) 09:43, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I've removed the "advert" template; I think the article is reasonably neutral, albeit positive in tone. As mentioned on the article's talk page, awards should go into the narrative (in the History section) if they are important enough; limit yourself to three or (at the most) four, and under no circumstances use the Nimbuzz blog or website, or a press release issued by Nimbuzz (no matter where it is republished) as the source/citation for the information.
As for DYK, the Help desk really isn't the place to appeal a decision of editors who work on that feature. It's best to discuss issues with them directly, or indirectly on the article talk page. -- John Broughton (♫♫) 21:25, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Is it possible to test out and save the coding of Wikipedia in a page inaccessible by the public?--Cobalt174 (talk) 12:15, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It would have to be off Wikipedia - on your own computer, because as a matter of principle almost everything on WP is fully accessible, except for actively running server code of course. The "coding of Wikipedia" is the Mediawiki software. You can download your own copy from the link in the bottom right corner of practically every page here. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 12:29, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) No. There's no such thing as 'a private page' on Wikipeia.
You can create a page, say User:CiaPan/mytestpage, which will not be linked in any other Wikipedia page, neither in main space or in User space (see Special:WhatLinksHere/User:CiaPan/mytestpage), however one can still find it by the global index (see appropriate part of index [7] or the filtered contents [8]) --CiaPan (talk) 12:36, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
This is mostly due to the principle that we are not here as a webhost; all of your content should be here as part of the project of building an encyclopedia, and private testing pages don't conform to that goal. --Orange Mike | Talk 12:41, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can stop Google from indexing a user page by adding two underscores, then the word NOINDEX, then two more underscores at the top of the page. Not all search engines honour this though. And don't forget to remove it when you are done! —Anne Delong (talk) 13:48, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

International Golf Federation (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Hello,

I work for the International Golf Federation(IGF) and would like to edit the page. Part of its content is not accurate. I have been trying to edit many times but my changes are being rejected by User:Tewapack. I wrote to him a few times but nothing has changed. Please let me know how I should proceed.

Many thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Aurelia 78 (talkcontribs) 13:35, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Part of the reason for the reversion of your edits is that you gave no explanation in an edit summary. You also gave no references to support the changes which you proposed. As you have a conflict of interest, the safest bet is to propose changes on the article talk page and to include with such proposal a reference to reliable sources to support your proposals. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:52, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see that Aurelia 78, who works for the IGF, and International Golf Federation, have made many changes to the International Golf Federation article, including removing all mention of both The R&A and the United States Golf Association. The articles about the two latter organisations both claim it is they rather than the IGF who form the governing body for golf. So I assume that there is some strong POV-pushing here. I have absolutely no interest in this most boring of sports, so I am not going to get involved any further. Maproom (talk) 16:20, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Tables help

I went through Help:Tables and I simply cannot figure this stuff out, so my apologies if this is really basic! I would really appreciate it if someone could do this for me. At Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Nomination procedure/sandbox, there are three "Steps". I would like each one separated into blue-outlined boxes that look like the "Step" boxes at Wikipedia:Featured picture candidates/Header/Sandbox (scroll down a bit). Don't touch the latter page—the boxes are horizontal. But for the "Nomination procedure" sandbox, I would like each Step box to be vertical, instead of horizontal. It's the dang fpipages that's messing me up I think, and depending on which browser I use, the Step 3 box will stretch out to the full page. Is there anyway of keeping all three Steps the same width? Feel free to be creative and do what's needed! THANK YOU so much!! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 20:15, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Keraunoscopia. Done. I have tweaked the width of the inputbox to make the boxes more equal in size and to fit with the amount of text.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:01, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. But is there a way to make the three boxes stacked on top of each other, to the left of the template? That's what I meant by vertical. Would putting fpipages in its own cell keep things looking clean? – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 22:09, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
A failure of reading on my part. Yes, vertical would mean ... vertical. Let me take a look again.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:13, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, next version is up.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:39, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Ahh perfect, that's what I was looking for. Thank you so much Fuhghettaboutit! – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 00:42, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think I get it... horizontal version = one table, three cells? And vertical version is three tables... hopefully I'll remember this. – Kerαunoςcopiagalaxies 00:45, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're welcome. All I did was make three separate single-celled tables which then naturally stack if there's nothing interposed between them. It may be that there's a way to do it in one table that someone who really knows this stuff would have done, so don't take what I did as the best way (I'm at best a dabbler), but it works:-)--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:37, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

ULRICH surname vs ULLRICH

To: Wikipedia [Help Desks]. The spellings are not all in the same as you say on internet Wikipedia links. Ulrich is germanic; however Ullrich is Swiss. Switzerland territory was under german rule, not part of Germany. Living in Peoria, IL, there are 100s of Ulrichs from Germany. There are 100s of my family tree back to 1790 here who spell as Ulrich also whereas we should spell as Ullrich. There is a distinction being our tree originates in Switzerland with direct migration out of Egypt depicted in encyclopedias before german rule 250-500 years prior. My family came to America via France to cut connections of immigration in early 1800s during Napoleonic years. Proof is our ancestry book from 1832 has not one of the other Ulrichs in our book to 2000. By tracking local newspaper obituaries for 30 years from parents of, sons of, very possible link, there is no link between Ulrich and Ullrich. I use Ullrich but most of my tree still use Ulrich. ULLRICH is Swiss and Egyptian people, w/lookalikes. No relatives of the ULRICHs of Germany here. I have suffered locally needless to say!... being someone that we're not. That's all. We still carry many close Egyptian genes and habits. We are definitely not pub people like most Germans. Please add this distinction "originating in Switzerland are Ullrichs". Thanks. Larry A. Ulrich, Peoria, IL — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.87.114.227 (talk) 22:09, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Can you be more specific about where you think we need a change? We have separate articles on Ulrich and on Ullrich. The latter page is much less well developed (although the former needs much work itself) and makes no mention of the derivation of the name. If you want that added, well why don't you go boldly fix it? All of Wikipedia's content has its origins with someone noticing a gap and filling it. We are all volunteers, and we were all once, like you, just someone coming to this site for the fist time. I would suggest you first take a tour through the tutorial to learn about our policies and how to edit. You can make your changes without having a username, but I suggest that you first sign up for one (totally anonymous and takes about 1 minute). Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:13, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I accidentally uploaded the wrong photo

I was trying to edit the page "georgetown district high school" and when I tried to upload a photo, I thought that you were supposed to put the file name of the photo on your computer, but apparently not. A photo I had never seen of a man and a dog came up, instead of a photo of volleyball, and I cant figure out how to get it off. If you could simply remove it, as it is not supposed to be on that page, and the caption does not correspond to it, that would be great,

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.204.213.133 (talk) 23:11, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It's difficult to track down what happened because you're editing unsigned in, by your IP address, rather than by the username you had to have been logged in under when you uploaded any photo. I'm not sure what happened on the upload but I do know that what you added to the article was File:Matt1.jpg. Anytime you upload, try to choose a specific, descriptive name. File:Matt1.jpg appears to be a redirect to a Wikimedia Commons file by the name File:Matthew Woodring Stover.jpg, and what you are seeing in the article is that picture. Can you expand on whether you were logged in when you uploaded or attempt to upload the image, what your username is, and whether it was here or at the Commons?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:29, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I removed the file in the article. See, what you have to base the image name on is the file name on Wikipedia or the Wikimedia commons. If an image is not at either of those places, it won't work on a Wikipedia page. Howicus (talk) 23:32, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you can't use a picture in Wikipedia until you, or somebody, has uploaded it to the Wikipedia or Wikimedia commons. see WP:Images. --ColinFine (talk) 23:51, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

may I post a comment in a different language?

Hello -

This can't be a new question! I read an article in German, understood about half of it, want to leave a comment in English on a German language page. Is this considered rude?

The thing is, the page is about "mohr in hemd," a Viennese dessert my late aunt described to me. What is popularly baked as a dessert under that name now is not what my aunt described. I'm interested in the history of this, and whether anyone has any memory of there being another version of this dessert. The dessert my aunt described to me would actually answer the question people seem to be asking in the wiki-article (where is the 'hemd' -- the 'shirt' -- in this dessert?), but I can't write well enough in German. I have to contribute my little bit in English, or I just won't have time for it. So what do you think, can I just go ahead and post in English on this German language page of yours?

Secondly, another part of the article is discussing the political correctness of calling this dessert "moor in a shirt." I'd like to post, in English, that when my aunt explained this dessert and its name to me, it didn't come across as a racial slur at all. Rather, she seemed to be thinking about the wonder and romance of that first exposure to a really exotic person. And also, the dessert originated when the opera "Othello" debuted in 1888, so the dessert and its name is pertinent to Viennese history. But I'm not sure I should put my opinion on this page, especially my American opinion (of course, if everyone dumps on it, I'll only be able to read half of it). So, what do you think, should I post in the 'political correctness' section of this page?

Thanks for your help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nightgardener (talkcontribs) 23:47, 6 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Each language Wikipedia is a separate project with, to some degree, different rules and customs. I don't advise you to post in English on the page in German Wikipedia; but I don't think anybody will object if you post on the talk page (Diskussion:name of page) in English, explaining what you would like to add. Alternatively you could try at the newcomers' question page de:WP:Fragen von Neulingen.
On English Wikipedia, you should never ever put your opinion on an article page, unless you have a reliable source to support it. Articles are for referenced encyclopaedic content, talk pages are for discussion. I don't know that the rules in German Wikipedia are the same, but I would guess the are. --ColinFine (talk) 00:04, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Johnetta Cole article

How do I make a suggestion about a Wiki page that is weak, poorly researched, underwritten?

Dr. Johnetta Cole: Johnnetta B. Cole

Dr. Cole has an extraordinary personal commitment to international work and was part of the VInceremos Brigade I believe, traveling to Cuba several times in order to establish solidarity just after the Cuban Missile Crisis. This is the information I was looking to confirm here in WIKIPEDIA.

Additionally, her teaching style was innovative, profound, challenging and dynamic. For example, often used the term "USA" pronounced "oohsa" to provoke students into recognising that the United States was but one of three nations composing the continent of North America and to underscore the complexity of cultural relativism. Dr. Cole's contributions are many. She is a lifelong activist and social visionary on the order of Cornell West and Maya Angelou. I think this article fails to identify her illustrious conviction, dedication and wisdom as they are not reflected in this article.

International Golf Federation

Hello,

I left a message yesterday about the International Golf Federation. The answer that I received is that "People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible."

I would like to mention that I was not trying to make the article too flattering or too disparaging. I was only trying to correct wrong facts. For example, the International Golf Federation does not recognize Continental Federations, which is what the article is currently stating. I have verified my sources. This article is providing a bad image of the Federation.

Thanks for your help.

Alger Hiss and the Soviet files

I have now tried twice to answer a comment on the above subject, made after I had done no more than state a fact. On both occasions, you have told me that you could not publish this. The text was apparently wiped on both occasions. There was not even a provision for printing out my text. In other words, I will have to do it from scratch again. 1. Are you putting time restrictions on contributors? 2. Is this for your benefit, or for the users? 3. If you are timing people out, what is the point of it? 4. Why do you not allow people to take a copy of their text? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rhosfawr (talkcontribs) 12:38, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, the only contribution you have made is an edit to the Algar Hiss talk page: [9]. It is still there. If you have made edits under another name, how are we supposed to know where they are? With very few exceptions (e.g. for libellous material, copyright violations etc) material is not deleted from article or talk page histories, so you should still be able to locate it. AndyTheGrump (talk) 13:15, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have never heard of any time restrictions being applied to editors; indeed there is a saying "Wikipedia has no deadline". And everything you have contributed to Wikipedia is still here, either in the article or in the talk page where you put it, or in the "History" of the page where you put it (click on the History tab near the top right of the page), so there is no need for you to type it in again. The only exception would be if you have libelled a living person, or violated someone's copyright, or broken the law in some other way, as AndyTheGrump said; but I see nothing to suggest that that has happened. Maproom (talk) 13:53, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think the problem you are having is edit conflicts, if someone else edits the page and saves it while you are editing it wont save for you. If you edit just the section you want to comment on and not the whole page that may help. Also if you use the preview button before you save then use the back button in your browser your text will be there and you can copy/paste it in again. Other companies do. Arthur goes shopping (talk) 14:58, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It is also not without its controversy, because many people feel that the introduction of paid editing means that the person or company doing the paying expects a certain result in terms of point-of-view, and thus taints the trustworthiness of Wikipedia's articles because of the inherent conflict of interest that paying someone to advertise your company or ideas (or conversely, to pay someone to attack your enemies and competitors), especially where such editing is done by people who know Wikipedia well enough to game the system effectively. --Jayron32 15:06, 7 June 2013 (UTC)[reply]
