Ansan is a city in Gyeonggi Province, South Korea. It lies south of Seoul, and is part of the Seoul National Capital Area. It is connected to Seoul by rail via Seoul Subway Line 4. Ansan is situated on the Yellow Sea coast and some islands lie within its jurisdiction. The largest and best-known of these is Daebu Island. Several higher learning institutions are located in Ansan. They include Ansan University, Ansan College of Technology, Seoul Institute of the Arts, and ERICA campus of Hanyang University. The Korea Transportation Safety Authority, a government agency, is also headquartered in Ansan.[1] [clarification needed] With its high number of foreign workers, Wongokbon-dong has been designated a multicultural area.[2] On November 11, 2009, Ansan city hall became the first in South Korea to operate round-the-clock.[clarification needed][3]

History

Ancient Era

The first humans in Ansan were in the New Stone Age, and many shell middens and prehistoric remains are found at Oido, Sihwaho, Chojidong and Daebudo.[4][5] In Seonbu-dong and Wolpi-dong area, over 10 dolmens can be found.[6] Also in 1995, Old Stone Age relics were found while constructing the Seohaean Expressway.[7][8] Most dolmens in Ansan are north dolmen, but the dolmen in Seonbu-dong is table-shaped and another table-shaped dolmen was found in Hakon-dong, Gwangmyeong. Therefore, Ansan has plenty of ancient relics.[9][10]

Three Kingdoms Era

Not much evidences of ancient country in Proto-Three Kingdoms and Samhan period are in Ansan and nearby area. There is few archeological antiquities founded in Ansan and Siheung area.[11]Mahan confederacy in Chen Shou in Records of the Three Kingdoms was written about chiefdom state.[9][12] Ansan was in communion with Baekje.but The history Very little was saved

Goryeo Era

In Later Three Kingdoms era, Ansan area was owned by Taebong (also known as Hugoguryeo, "Later Goguryeo") in Silla Hyogong's 4th year(AD 900). [13] After then, Gung Ye who was ruler of Taebong was overthrown by Wang Geon, and Ansan area was turned over to Goryeo that was founded by Wang Geon. First Gung Ye, Ganggu-gun was changed to Ansan-gun but state of the military was held.

Joseon Era

Ansan belonged to Gyeonggijwa-do (left Gyeonggi province) in Joseon dynasty. Taejo's 5th year (AD 1396), Ansan-eoso (means Ansan fishery) that is under direct control of a detached building of Saongwon(the Department of foods and meals in Court in Joseon dynasty) was set up.[14] After Gyeonggijwa-do and Gyeonggiwo-do (right Gyeonggi province) were unified in Teajong's 2nd year (AD 1402), Ansan was still called Ansan. Teajong's 13th (1413), the whole country was detached in eight provinces. That time. Ansan has been mainstreamed.

Modern Era

Until 1914, Ansan City and the southern part of today's Siheung City consisted of Ansan County. In 1914, Ansan County was annexed to Siheung County. This region produced high qualified salt from ancient times and expensive marine products. Ansan was a fishing village.[15] In 1986, several towns of Hwaseong county became incorporated, representing the beginning of Ansan as a city. With currently over 700,000 residents, Ansan now has 2 distinct and separate districts:[16] Danwon, which has 12 dongs as of 2009, and Sangnok, with 13.

Geography

Ansan is located in the southwest Gyeonggi Province, is located at central district and It is situated on the coast of the Yellow Sea (locally called West Sea), at 37°19′N 126°50′E / 37.317°N 126.833°E / 37.317; 126.833. Portions of various Yellow Sea islands lie within its jurisdiction. The largest and best-known of these is Daebu Island.

Located at the end of Ansan City, Gyeonggi-do, southwest of the Korean peninsula, is a city located in the central region. Located at the south of the cities, Daebudo and Pungdo. Kwonsun, Gunpo, and Anyang are located in the east of Ansan. The Yellow Sea to the west, Hwaseong to the south, and Siheung to the north are bounded.

Railroad

There is Ansan Line a major railroad in Ansan. Ansan Line is Seoul Metropolitan Subway. It is part of Seoul Metro's Line 4. This is connected to public bus system that start everywhere in ansan. The first railroad in Ansan is Suin Line that was opened at Korea under Japanese rule.

Future expansion

The Suin Line connecting Suwon to Incheon is set to open in two phases. Starting in June 2013 service will commence connecting Oido and Songdo in Incheon. In 2016 the route from Suwon is planned to connect at Hanyang Univ. at Ansan.[17]

Ansan Bus Terminal

The Ansan Bus Terminal (KO:안산종합버스터미널) provides daily bus service to Incheon International Airport and most cities in South Korea. Express buses to Iksan, Dongdaegu, and Gwangju are available.[18] Ansan has 53 bus lines with 537 buses operating in and out of the city limits, connecting the city with Seoul and other outlying Gyeonggi cities. Ansan transfer center has many buses that are express city bus, city bus and intercity bus to link Banwal industrial estate, Sihaw lake and nearby city. or the buses goes via Gimpo International Airport and Incheon International Airport Near bus station in Ansan Station,Ansan Bus Terminal, Sangnoksu Station is hub to go near city station as Suwon Station, Gangnam Station

Ansan Mayor

Ansan was being chosen by the government from 1986 to 1995.From 1995 to now, mayor was elected by popular vote.the initial and tertiary stage was Song Jin-Sub.Secondary stage was Park sung-ju. Quaternary Mayor was Park Ju-Won. and now Mayor is Kim Min-Cuer.

Education

Ansan had Hyanggyo of national education organization of the country throughout the Joseon Dynasty and Goryeo Several institutions of higher learning are located in Ansan. They include the Ansan University, Ansan College of Technology, Seoul Institute of the Arts, and the ERICA campus of Hanyang University.

There are 24 high schools, 29 middle schools, 54 elementary schools and 96 kindergartens in the city.[21]

Economy

Because Ansan is planned city built behind the Ansan Smart Hub following the government industrial planning, the proportion of agriculture in Ansan industry is very low. Meanwhile, the government intensively carryed forward a manufacturing industry plan in Ansan area before Ansan was built, many people worked in manufacturing industry. There are two national industrial complexes, Banwol and Sihwa, and is a local industrial complex that is Banwol plating industrial complex.

Ansan has many museums and galleries like Ansan Culture and Arts Center, Seongho Memorial Hall, Danwon Sculpture Park and Hwarang Public Garden. The city runs city tour bus for efficiently using cultural heritage.[22]

Events

The Jet-mer-ri village deity is held every year in Jet-mer-ri shrine to the village deity from 1984.and From 1987 Beal-Mang-Sung art festival is held to run under Korea Art culture organization and Ansan. Also from 1991 Dan won art festival, from 1996 Sung-ho cultural festival is held. Ansan Street Arts Festival is held in the Ansan Culture Square in May from 2005. Other festivals in Ansan include:

Ansan is running City Tour bus for effective using scattered culture heritage from 2008.[36][37][38][39] famous sightseeing is Daebu Island. Daebu Island make progress mud flat,salt pond experience. but it is limited for season. so it is operated attributively.

Large and small stadium is be founded from 1990s.[46] Many major sports events in Ansan take place at the Ansan Wa~ Stadium.[47][48]

The city is home to Shinhan Bank S-Bird Woman’s Basketball Team (member of the Women's Korean Basketball League)[49] It was also a home to now defunct National League soccer club Ansan Hallelujah.

There are several large department stores like Lotte Department Store, 2001 Outlet and New-CoRE Outlet. 2001 Outlet is changed to NC department store at 2013 November.[50]
