Colonial Stores was a chain grocery stores once found throughout much of the South. Most were transformed to Big Star Markets in the 1970s and later most became Harris Teeter and a few A&P). The chain evolved from Norfolk, Virginia's D. P. Pender Grocery Stores, and were known for their rooster logo. Pender/Colonial was one of a handful of regional grocery chains originally based in the Norfolk area, including Giant Open Air, Farm Fresh and Be-Lo Food Stores.
