Dulwich and West Norwood /ˈdʌlɪtʃ ənd wɛst ˈnɔːrwʊd/ is a constituency created in 1997 and represented in the House of Commons by Helen Hayes of the Labour Party since her election in 2015.

Boundaries

1997-2010: The Southwark borough wards of Alleyn, Bellenden, College, Lyndhurst, Ruskin, and Rye, and the London Borough of Lambeth wards of Gipsy Hill, Herne Hill, Knight’s Hill, and Thurlow Park.

2010–present: The Southwark borough amalgamated wards of College, East Dulwich and Village, and Coldharbour and the same Lambeth borough wards.

Constituency profile

Situated in south London is the seat of Dulwich and West Norwood. Traversed by the South Circular Road, it is a constituency of two halves. On one side there is Dulwich Village, with its three prestigious private schools and million pound properties - Baroness Thatcher, the former UK prime minister, TV personality Ronnie Corbett and comedian Jo Brand were all former residents.

On the other hand, the area includes estates like Angell Town, which has one of the highest crime rates in London, it also has shown strong support for the Green Party and UKIP. The ward, Coldharbour, currently has two Labour Councillors elected with 51% of the overall vote & an Independent with 22% of the vote.

The seat is ethnically diverse: one in four is Afro-Caribbean - the 10th highest proportion of all constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures. A third of the population lives in social housing; one in 10 is a lone parent. At 47.6%, it has the 15th highest proportion of people with a degree.

Political history

The Labour Party majorities won have been in the safe order of more than 15% since the seat's 1997 creation. The runner-up party in three of the five elections to date has been the Conservative Party, otherwise the Liberal Democrats.

A leader of the Green Party, Jenny Jones stood in the seat in 2001 and 2005.

Before 1997 the forerunner seats of Norwood and Dulwich were won by Labour candidates, the latter being Tessa Jowell; the last other party win in either was the 1987 win in the Dulwich seat of Gerald Francis Bowden, Conservative, by 0.5% of the vote, having won a 4.9% majority in the 1983 landslide.

2016 EU Referendum

During the 2016 EU referendum, Lambeth voted 78% to remain and 22% to Leave, this was one of the highest remain votes in the UK.

Members of Parliament

The constituency was created in 1997 from parts of the former seats of Dulwich and Norwood. It was represented from its creation until 2015 by the former Secretary of State for Culture (2001-2007), Tessa Jowell.
