Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology (Urdu: غلام اسحاق خان انسٹیٹیوٹ) also referred to as GIK Institute or GIKI (pronounced JeeKee) is one the most prestigious engineering institutes of Pakistan. GIKI is known the world over for setting a standard of excellence in the field of engineering. Over the years, the institute has produced bright, innovative graduates employed at some of the most respectable firms all over the world. The Institute aspires to be a center of excellence in engineering sciences and technology, which acts as an effective agent of change and a model for others to emulate. It is autonomous and independently chartered and is funded by the private sector. It strives to attract faculty of outstanding talent and ability to provide the students a supporting and enabling environment. It hopes to produce graduates who distinguish themselves by their professional competence, humanistic outlook and ethical rectitude, pragmatic approach to problem-solving, and organizational and managerial skills. Given these attributes, they should be able to respond adequately to the needs of Pakistan and be the vanguard of their techno-industrial transformation.

Apart from its outstanding academic programme, GIKI is also known for the versatility and vibrancy of its extra-curricular scenario. All of these activities are student-organized. At present, GIKI has more than 20 student societies. These organizations provide the students with various opportunities to indulge in their aesthetic interests and experience working in a professional environment. Moreover, these societies instill in their members the priceless qualities of teamwork and leadership.[3]

History

The GIK Institute is a private educational institution, named after former bureaucrat and former President of Pakistan Ghulam Ishaq Khan. The project was delegated to Pakistani scientist, Dr. Abdul Qadeer Khan, who was one of the founding members of the institute and was once registered as an associate professor of physics.[4]

Ishaq Khan, while president of Pakistan, was elected the president of the Society for life and Mr. H. U. Beg was appointed its honorary executive director. The ordinance of the institute was promulgated by the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa Government in March 1993, and the first batch of students was inducted the same year in October.[5]

Major founding donors include nouman Benevolent Community Care, Infaq Foundation, Chiniot Anjuman-e-Islamia, Dawood Group of Industries, and the Government of the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa which has donated land at Topi.[citation needed]

Location

The university is situated beside the river Indus in the mountains of Tarbela and Gadoon-Amazai, in the Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa near the town of Topi and in proximity to the lakes of Tarbela Dam (world's largest earth-filled dam) and Ghazi.[6] Its campus is in the mountains of Tarbela and Gadoon-Amazai, and is a residential campus with accommodation for students. Local sights include Lahor, where Pāṇini is believed to have composed the Sanskrit grammar, and near which Alexander the Great and his Greek army crossed the Indus on his way to India, Shabaz Ghari famous for the Ashoka inscriptions and Takht Bhai, the site of one of the best preserved Buddhist monasteries.[citation needed]

Faculties and Departments

Faculty of Computer Sciences and Engineering

The Faculty of Computer Science and Engineering endeavors to produce competent scientists and engineers who can play a productive role both in the practical and research areas of computing. The faculty uses modern technologies to enhance the learning capabilities of the students and to provide them with a stimulating and challenging environment. Emphasis is put on the practical applications of computer Systems to the software and hardware needs of the global industry in general and Pakistani industry in particular. The Faculty offers courses leading to Bachelor's (BS) in computer engineering and computer science. It also offers Master's (MS) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Degrees in Computer System Engineering.[7]

Faculty of Engineering Sciences

The Faculty of Engineering Sciences offers holistic perspective of the fundamental sciences and provides opportunities to integrate systems from different disciplines. The courses provide a high quality and broad based coverage of multi-disciplinary engineering using Mathematics, Physics, Computer Science and Engineering to conduct research and design innovative engineering solution. The course offers excellent job opportunities in industrial sector and in R&D organization providing a launching platform to conduct graduate studies in the globally emerging field of Engineering Sciences.

The Faculty offers a 4-year degree program leading to Bachelor of Science in Engineering Sciences which encompasses some of the modern fields of engineering such as:

  • Lasers and Electro-Optics
  • Semiconductors and Superconducting Devices
  • Modelling and Simulations

The faculty also offers MS and PHD degree programs in applied mathematics and applied physics.[8]

Faculty of Electrical Engineering

Faculty of Electrical Engineering has designed and updated curriculum and offers high quality courses aimed at individuals who can amicably meet these challenges. The program of studies enables them to read the team of future young engineers and to realize their innovative ideas. The Faculty also provides the students with the opportunity to learn how research carried out by the faculty members is transformed into education. It offers four year BS degree program in Electrical Engineering with following specializations:

  • Electrical Engineering
  • Power Engineering[9]

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at GIKI has a well-balanced and modern curricula designed both for the professional and the R & D/research engineer. Drawing on all classical disciplines such as mechanics and materials, drawing/drafting, thermal and fluid sciences, design and controls, curricula also reflect the latest advances in Finite Element Methods, Computational Fluid Dynamics, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD), Numerical Control Machines and Energy Management. Modern labs, workshops and demonstration facilities complement the futuristic curricula. The centre of Energy and Environment studies (CEES) has already gained national and international exposure through its various workshops and conferences. The Centre for Manufacturing Productivity and Technology Transfer (CMPT) is a multidisciplinary research/R & D Centre aimed at bridging the gap between industry and academia, especially in manufacturing domain. Anticipating the technological scenario of the 21st century, the faculty provides an enjoyable and exciting academic experience.[10]

Faculty of Material Sciences and Engineering

Technological advances dominate the world in which we live and well-qualified materials engineers are needed to cope with them. Their areas of concern are wide and varied. Whether it is production of a light but strong material for an aircraft wing or of a material for an artificial hip with all the properties of a bone, we need the expertise of a material engineer. He/she collaborates with engineers of other specializations to investigate problems such as the analysis of the structural failure of a bridge, the amount of wear of an engine component, or the corrosion of deep-sea oilrigs.

The engineer of tomorrow must be technically competent, market-conscious, commercially adept, environmentally sensitive and responsive to human needs. The curriculum of the faculty aims at producing such a multi-dimensional engineer. It provides a broad range of fundamental courses at the earlier stages and progressively leads the students to areas of their specializations. It includes the principles that govern the properties of metals, polymers, ceramics and composites, and the whole range of technologies which produce these materials and nanomaterials.

The Faculty offers 4 year BS program in Materials Engineering which deals with a broad understanding of materials and the manufacturing of components. It offers following streams:

  • Specialization in Materials
  • Specialization in Manufacturing
  • Specialization in Nanotechnology
  • Minor in mining [11]

International Advisory Board

The advisory board consists of scientists, engineers and academicians who monitoring the institutes' standards of education and research. It comprises faculty members from Kansas State University, Kyoto University, McGill University, University of Florida, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and other institutions.[citation needed]
