New page reviewer granted

[edit]

Hello 97198. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group, allowing you to review new pages and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or in some cases, tag them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is a vital function for policing the quality of the encylopedia, if you have not already done so, you must read the new tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the various deletion criteria. If you need more help or wish to discuss the process, please join or start a thread at page reviewer talk.

  • URGENT: Please consider helping get the huge backlog down to a manageable number of pages as soon as possible.
  • Be nice to new users - they are often not aware of doing anything wrong.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted - be formal and polite in your approach to them too, even if they are not.
  • Don't review a page if you are not sure what to do. Just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Remember that quality is quintessential to good patrolling. Take your time to patrol each article, there is no rush. Use the message feature and offer basic advice.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In case of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, the right can be revoked at any time by an administrator. TonyBallioni (talk) 15:42, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article Grandma (film) you nominated as a good article has failed ; see Talk:Grandma (film) for reasons why the nomination failed. Douglas Vernon Hubble

[edit]

Hi 97198, How are you? It cool to see that you are creating some articles. Lets take the points one by one. The article is about Hubble who was a giant of paediatric endocrinology, he wrote several papers when he was still relatively young, which gained him a national reputation. That is exactly which is written in Munks. It has not changed. Regarding the James Spence Medal. It's because of that I'm updating this article, to bring it up to standard. Sorry I removed the entry, it would have been put back in, when I reviewed the article later today. The infobox is only half done, I was planning to do the reset today. The bone of contention, is the way Munks records the abbreviations, which 10000's of munks articles are done this way. scope_creep (talk) 11:58, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi 97198, this is what your talking about, I copied a used infobox, from a previous article: author_abbrev_bot =paediatric. I couln't see it at first. It would have been caught in the article review. Lastly, the the most important point, which which is the statement, which will need to change, is He was forced to retire from Birmingham in 1968. He wasn't forced to retire. Its process. He retired. scope_creep (talk) 12:08, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I think looking at your articles, which seem to be almost all medical in nature, the way that munks references the prizes and qualifications, needs to go. scope_creep (talk) 12:28, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Scope creep: I'm not entirely sure what you mean (I think some things may have been lost in translation, as it seems English isn't your first language). There is nothing wrong with the way Munk's Roll lists qualifications – all people on the roll have numerous qualifications which have different acronyms, but they should not be mistaken for prizes. For what it's worth, regarding your last message, I've been on Wikipedia for over 10 years and I've written hundreds of articles (listed here), only a small proportion of which are related to medicine. 97198 (talk) 12:37, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Your right, My first language is Scots. How did you know :) Me too, except most of mine are military, and Scots history, and bays and lochs, of Scotland like this Strachur Bay article I'm doing. Found out last night that Chopin had visted the place for a week, in 1848, which is truly astounding. WP is vast. It's all islands of communication, in a vast ocean. Take a look at this article, which I made earlier: Alan Moncrieff. I plan to put the qualification, after the name in the lede, a.l.a the same as in this Moncrieff article, like Munks. scope_creep (talk) 12:58, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

DYK prep sets

[edit]

Just letting you know that I will be away from home and my internet access for the next couple of days and will be unable to promote any hooks to prep. I have filled a couple of extra prep sets in preparation, and will be happily unaware of any faults that are found with them! If you felt like doing some promotion, it would be very helpful. Cwmhiraeth (talk) 10:12, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Cwmhiraeth: Thanks for the heads up. I haven't been very active at DYK in the last few weeks but I'll try to find some time for prep building. 97198 (talk) 11:05, 28 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

[edit]
Hello 97198, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

New Page Review Newsletter No.10

[edit]
Hello 97198, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • ACTRIAL's six month experiment restricting new page creation to (auto)confirmed users ended on 14 March. As expected, a greatly increased number of unsuitable articles and candidates for deletion are showing up in the feed again, and the backlog has since increased already by ~30%. Please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day.

Paid editing

  • Now that ACTRIAL is inoperative pending discussion, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

Nominate competent users for Autopatrolled

  • While patrolling articles, if you find an editor that is particularly competent at creating quality new articles, and that user has created more than 25 articles (rather than stubs), consider nominating them for the 'Autopatrolled' user right HERE.

News

  • The next issue Wikipedia's newspaper The Signpost has now been published after a long delay. There are some articles in it, including ACTRIAL wrap-up that will be of special interest to New Page Reviewers. Don't hesitate to contribute to the comments sections. The Signpost is one of the best ways to stay up date with news and new developments - please consider subscribing to it. All editors of Wikipedia and associated projects are welcome to submit articles on any topic for consideration by the The Signpost's editorial team for the next issue.

Invitation to participate in study

[edit]

Hello,

I am E. Whittaker, I am working with Wikimedia’s Scoring Team to create a labeled dataset, and potentially a tool, to help editors deal with incivility when they encounter it on talk pages. A full write-up of the study can be found here: m:Research:Civil_Behavior_Interviews. We are currently recruiting editors to be interviewed about their experiences with incivility on talk pages. Would you be interested in being interviewed? I am contacting you because of your involvement in Wikipedia’s Women in Red project. The interviews should take ~1 hour, and will be conducted over BlueJeans (which does allow interviews to be recorded). If, so, please email me at ewhit@umich.edu in order to schedule an interview.

AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

[edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

DYK Rockstar San Diego

[edit]

Hi 97198! Thanks for promoting Template:Did you know nominations/Rockstar San Diego. I noticed that Prep 5 now lists ALT7 instead of the approved ALT1a. Is this intentional? Regards, Lordtobi () 09:55, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Lordtobi: The reviewer highlighted ALT1 and ALT7 as the most interesting hooks. I chose 7 since I thought it was more interesting; if you feel strongly I wouldn't be opposed to changing it. 97198 (talk) 11:12, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Nope, no strong feeling, as I like all of the hooks very much. I you think this one is the best to display at DYK, then you're probably right. Regards, Lordtobi () 11:47, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Beethoven

[edit]

Could you perhaps, instead of replacing a slot meant to picture Beethoven at the beginning of the year which is his 250th anniversary, work towards approval, by approving one of the many possible hooks, or at least wording a new one? This is a chance of a lifetime. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 09:42, 30 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

There is no specific reason to picture Beethoven in this particular set. The whole year of 2020 is the 250th anniversary year, nothing special about 1 January. 97198 (talk) 09:56, 30 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see it differently: for me, 1 January is a mood-setting day. - Funny: on the German Wikipedia, I have a similar struggle, a New Year's cantata (which I nominated for someone else) possibly not shown on 1 Jan because we just had so much about music. So some random day? - Excuse me, and have a good one. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:03, 30 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
