Could you please remove the code from the User:Hurricane Noah common.jvs page? 173.113.210.51 (talk) 19:48, 8 June 2019 (UTC)

I can't confirm that's you, though. If it is, try going to this url: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Hurricane_Noah/common.js?action=edit&safemode=1. ~ Amory (utc) 00:40, 9 June 2019 (UTC)

For great management, coding, and customer service supporting the field of countervandalism

The Half Barnstar
Thanks so much to you (and SD0001 who has the right half) for your continued work on Twinkle, especially for your quick response tweaking it for editors like me that don't like change. I do a bit of countervandalism and the efficiencies and customer service you've offered make me rather pleased with this endeavor. Chris Troutman (talk) 02:07, 10 June 2019 (UTC)

GOCE June newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors June 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the June newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since March 2019. You can unsubscribe from our mailings at any time; see below.

Election time: Nomination of candidates in our mid-year Election of Coordinators opened on 1 June, and voting will take place from 16 June. Coordinators normally serve a six-month term and are elected on an approval basis. Self-nominations are welcome. If you've thought of helping out at the Guild, or know of another editor who would make a good coordinator, please consider standing for election or nominating them here.

June Blitz: Our June blitz will soon be upon us; it will begin at 00:01 on 16 June (UTC) and will close at 23:59 on 22 June (UTC). The themes are "nature and the environment" and all requests.

March Drive: Thanks to everyone for their work in March's Backlog Elimination Drive. We removed copyedit tags from 182 of the articles tagged in our original target months October and November 2018, and the month finished with 64 target articles remaining from November and 811 in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 22 requests for copyedit in March; the month ended with 34 requests pending. Of the 32 people who signed up for this drive, 24 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

April Blitz: Thanks to everyone who participated in the April Blitz; the blitz ran from 14 to 20 April (UTC) inclusive and the themes were Sports and Entertainment. Of the 15 people who signed up, 13 copyedited at least one article. Participants claimed 60 copyedits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 04:36, 3 June 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have completed 267 requests since 1 January. The backlog of tagged articles stands at 605 articles.

May Drive: During the May Backlog Elimination Drive, Guild copy-editors removed copyedit tags from 191 of the 192 articles tagged in our original target months of November and December 2018, and January 2019 was added on 22 May. We finished the month with 81 target articles remaining and a record low of 598 articles in the backlog. GOCE copyeditors also completed 24 requests for copyedit during the May drive, and the month ended with 35 requests pending. Of the 26 people who signed up for this drive, 21 copyedited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Miniapolis, Baffle gab1978, Jonesey95, Reidgreg and Tdslk.

Wojciech Waleczek

Hi. Could you please help me to move an userspace draft about an award-winning composer into article space? The draft is about Wojciech Waleczek—a succesful pianist from Poland whose numerous achievements deserve to be celebrated with his own Wikipedia page. He took 3rd prize at the Premio Mario Zanfi competition and was the absolute winner of the 4th Franz Liszt National Piano Competition—to name just a few of his accomplishments. Mr Waleczek already has his articles on German and Polish Wikipedia. Hope to hear back from you. Regards, AngelOfDestiny (talk) 14:41, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

I see you've also asked a number of other sysops, the issue being that Wojciech Waleczek is protected. Unfortunately, as far as I can tell from a quick review, only the Cyprus Mail link is close to being a reliable source. Multiple verifiable reliable sources are needed to show notability, so I'd suggest working on it to provide those sources. ~ Amory (utc) 16:41, 14 June 2019 (UTC)

Busy for a bit

I know you're busy for a bit but I just wanted to say I hope you're doing well and that life is treating you OK. Best, Barkeep49 (talk) 21:42, 3 July 2019 (UTC)

Thanks (as always) for the note, really quite nice. One thing led to another, but I'm hoping to be back around this coming week, mostly catching up. Really appreciate the thought. ~ Amory (utc) 15:48, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

User highlighter script question

Hey Amorymeltzer. I use this script of yours, and find it tremendously useful. I've found, though, that's it's lagging a bit in the aftermath of framgate; specifically, it doesn't seem to be able to handle crat flag removal. It's hardly a major concern (so take your time, if you're busy) but I keep having a "wait, the crats are all back?" moment before I check their rights and see that they aren't, and then feeling sad about it. So, I'd appreciate a moment of your attention...Vanamonde (Talk) 15:30, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

@Vanamonde93: Oh lordy it continued! Infinitely sorry — life got super complicated longer than expected, I've only just this morning started to set a plan to get back into and catch up on things and had no idea. I've updated the pages, should be working just fine now. Been meaning to do a bot/slightly more automated process, but, again, sorry for the hassle and thanks for the note. Should be okay now! ~ Amory (utc) 15:47, 6 July 2019 (UTC)
Seems to be fine! Many thanks. I don't think I can really describe how useful this script is when perusing discussions involving users with advanced permissions; so many of our functionaries and stewards are minimally active, and it's far too much effort to commit their names to memory. So I really appreciated the fix. I look forward to seeing you more active. Vanamonde (Talk) 16:14, 6 July 2019 (UTC)

Miscellaneous

  • Following a research project on masking IP addresses, the Foundation is starting a new project to improve the privacy of IP editors. The result of this project may significantly change administrative and counter-vandalism workflows. The project is in the very early stages of discussions and there is no concrete plan yet. Admins and the broader community are encouraged to leave feedback on the talk page.
  • The new page reviewer right is bundled with the admin tool set. Many admins regularly help out at Special:NewPagesFeed, but they may not be aware of improvements, changes, and new tools for the Curation system. Stay up to date by subscribing here to the NPP newsletter that appears every two months, and/or putting the reviewers' talk page on your watchlist.

Since the introduction of temporary user rights, it is becoming more usual to accord the New Page Reviewer right on a probationary period of 3 to 6 months in the first instance. This avoids rights removal for inactivity at a later stage and enables a review of their work before according the right on a permanent basis.

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Bots Newsletter, August 2019

Greetings!

Here is the 7th issue of the Bots Newsletter, a lot happened since last year's newsletter! You can subscribe/unsubscribe from future newsletters by adding/removing your name from this list.

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM
  • Nothing of note happened. Just like we like it.
BAG

BAG members are expected to be active on Wikipedia to have their finger on the pulse of the community. After two years without any bot-related activity (such as posting on bot-related pages, posting on a bot's talk page, or operating a bot), BAG members will be retired from BAG following a one-week notice. Retired members can re-apply for BAG membership as normal if they wish to rejoin the BAG.

We thank former members for their service and wish Madman a happy retirement. We note that Madman and BU Rob13 were not inactive and could resume their BAG positions if they so wished, should their retirements happens to be temporary.

BOTDICT

Two new entries feature in the bots dictionary

BOTPOL
  • Activity requirements: BAG members now have an activity requirement. The requirements are very light, one only needs to be involved in a bot-related area at some point within the last two years. For purpose of meeting these requirements, discussing a bot-related matter anywhere on Wikipedia counts, as does operating a bot (RFC).
  • Copyvio flag: Bot accounts may be additionally marked by a bureaucrat upon BAG request as being in the "copyviobot" user group on Wikipedia. This flag allows using the API to add metadata to edits for use in the New pages feed (discussion). There is currently 1 bot using this functionality.
  • Mass creation: The restriction on mass-creation (semi-automated or automated) was extended from articles, to all content-pages. There are subtleties, but content here broadly means whatever a reader could land on when browsing the mainspace in normal circumstances (e.g. Mainspace, Books, most Categories, Portals, ...). There is also a warning that WP:MEATBOT still applies in other areas (e.g. Redirects, Wikipedia namespace, Help, maintenance categories, ...) not explicitely covered by WP:MASSCREATION.
BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

  • 20 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
  • 14 open BRFAs and 1 BRFA in need of BAG attention (see live status).
  • In 2018, 96 bot task were approved. An AWB search shows approximately 29 were withdrawn/expired, and 6 were denied.
  • Since the start of 2019, 97 bot task were approved. Logs show 15 were withdrawn/expired, and 15 were denied.
  • 10 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion). 5 other bots have been deflagged per operator requests or similar (see discussion).
New things
Other discussions

These are some of the discussions that happened / are still happening since the last Bots Newsletter. Many are stale, but some are still active.

Sending Love your way

I hope you and your family are doing well. Know that love is being sent through the universe your way. Best, as always, Barkeep49 (talk) 02:56, 18 August 2019 (UTC)

🤗 You continue to be quite sweet! I'm hoping to ease back into things for real now. There was a trifecta of vacation without internet + family death + dramatically increased childcare responsibilities, which is a recipe for not being active here! All is well, although the latter will probably limit my productivity for the foreseeable future. Thanks for the thoughts, hope to be more visible soon. ~ Amory (utc) 20:32, 31 August 2019 (UTC)

The Mandarax Barnstar of Excellence
I am pleased to award this MBE to you in recognition of your excellent work maintaining and improving Twinkle. I'd especially like to thank you for your implementation of my request for the enhanced ability to easily issue page-specific warnings from any diff, but this is also in appreciation of all of your efforts, both Twinkle-related and otherwise. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 00:00, 24 July 2019 (UTC)
Thanks! I've been busy and neglecting my duties lately, but hope to be back on the train soon! ~ Amory (utc) 20:23, 31 August 2019 (UTC)
It's good to see you back. Obviously don't worry about neglecting your duties – family always comes first. I was afraid this barnstar would get overlooked among litterally millions of archived messages, so I'm glad you unarchived it. MANdARAX  XAЯAbИAM 18:47, 2 September 2019 (UTC)

User rights highlighter script

Not to be a bother, Amorymeltzer, but your usually infallible script is somehow not responding to userrights changed on meta (I think); in this case, Beeblebrox's return to OS permissions. This is hardly urgent, but I thought you'd like to know. Best, Vanamonde (Talk) 17:18, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

Thanks Vanamonde93, but as before you're being over-generous to me — I've just been super busy and haven't even gotten around to this most-minor of updates. Should all be set now. It's fairly automated, but I should just completely automate it. Thanks for keeping me honest, sorry for causing you problems! ~ Amory (utc)
Not a problem, and thank you. Out of curiosity; does this mean you have to do manual updates when user-rights are changed outside en.wiki? Vanamonde (Talk) 04:43, 1 September 2019 (UTC)
All changes! I've just changed my script so that it will automatically update the pages. It takes maybe three seconds and I run it maybe a dozen times a day, so this sort of thing shouldn't happen again. If I permanently lose internet/go rouge/die, though, the subpages are all json so any sysop can update them, as L235 kindly did recently. ~ Amory (utc) 11:05, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
Ah! So, if I notice a change and you're not around, it would be helpful to update them, so long as I can do that without fracking everything up? Vanamonde (Talk) 19:04, 2 September 2019 (UTC)
Always! ~ Amory (utc) 09:30, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

Rollback restoration

Hi Amory. Can you restore my rollback right? The 3 month trial was expired. I have used rollback with care and never abused it. Thanks. Accesscrawl (talk) 10:58, 3 September 2019 (UTC)

I've been away for a while and at this point I think it'd be best to head back to WP:PERM/R so someone else can review. ~ Amory (utc) 18:42, 4 September 2019 (UTC)

New Page Review newsletter September-October 2019

Hello Amorymeltzer,

Backlog

Instead of reaching a magic 300 as it once did last year, the backlog approaching 6,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Coordinator

A proposal is taking place here to confirm a nominated user as Coordinator of NPR.

This month's refresher course

Why I Hate Speedy Deleters, a 2008 essay by long since retired Ballonman, is still as valid today. Those of us who patrol large numbers of new pages can be forgiven for making the occasional mistake while others can learn from their 'beginner' errors. Worth reading.

Deletion tags

Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon (you will need to have 'Nominated for deletion' enabled for this in your filters) may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders using Twinkle. They require your further verification.

Paid editing

Please be sure to look for the tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. WMF policy requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines' (SNG). Alternatives to deletion
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves once more with notability guidelines for organisations and companies.
  • Blank-and-Redirect is a solution anchored in policy. Please consider this alternative before PRODing or CSD. Note however, that users will often revert or usurp redirects to re-create deleted articles. Do regularly patrol the redirects in the feed.
Not English
  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, and if they do have potential, tag as required, then move to draft. Modify the text of the template as appropriate before sending it.
Tools

Regular reviewers will appreciate the most recent enhancements to the New Pages Feed and features in the Curation tool, and there are still more to come. Due to the wealth of information now displayed by ORES, reviewers are strongly encouraged to use the system now rather than Twinkle; it will also correctly populate the logs.

Stub sorting, by SD0001: A new script is available for adding/removing stub tags. See User:SD0001/StubSorter.js, It features a simple HotCat-style dynamic search field. Many of the reviewers who are using it are finding it an improvement upon other available tools.

Assessment: The script at User:Evad37/rater makes the addition of Wikiproject templates extremely easy. New page creators rarely do this. Reviewers are not obliged to make these edits but they only take a few seconds. They can use the Curation message system to let the creator know what they have done.

DannyS712 bot III is now patrolling certain categories of uncontroversial redirects. Curious? Check out its patrol log.

Go here to remove your name if you wish to opt-out of future mailings.

Cello out of tune

In line with the obsessive secrecy that surrounds suppression actions, surely the id of the user who did this edit should have been suppressed?

Also, looking at what is left of the message from Bestcello (talk · contribs) it is hard to imagine what it contained that required suppression. An email address so sensitive that even admins are not allowed to see it? — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 15:48, 11 September 2019 (UTC)

I don't know what you mean by id, but if adults want to reveal their names or emails that's generally their prerogative; if you think I missed something, please do email me. As to the suppression, I obviously won't go into specifics, but will just say, small or large, that there are other pieces of information that should generally be suppressed.. ~ Amory (utc) 16:54, 11 September 2019 (UTC)
Id is widely used in the real world as an abbreviation for identity or identification depending on context. Do I really need to spell out to you what I meant by its use here? There is a clear policy that the identity of the person doing a suppression is to be hidden from all except a very select group of users. This edit is clearly marked as having by done by you. There is a clear risk that anyone puzzling over that edit might conclude that you are also the person who did the suppression of the preceding three edits. Surely that would be a lapse of the secrecy policy? So surely the performer's username part of the edit history should be suppressed. Indeed if you were to suppress all aspects of that edit, I would not be distressed. — RHaworth (talk · contribs) 12:40, 12 September 2019 (UTC)
Sorry — I didn't realize you were speaking about me, especially in a context where there are multiple "identifications" (username, first name, last name, email address...). As to your concern, it's a reasonable assumption, but certainly not reliably true. Policy doesn't dictate that any and all traces of who was involved in an action should be expunged, but if you have concerns over my (or any other oversighter's) behavior, I encourage you to contact ArbCom. ~ Amory (utc) 17:41, 13 September 2019 (UTC)

September 2019 GOCE Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the September newsletter, a brief update of Guild activities since June 2019.

June election: Reidgreg was chosen as lead coordinator, and is being assisted by Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk, and first-time coordinator Twofingered Typist. Jonesey95 took a respite after serving for six years. Thanks to everyone who participated!

June Blitz: From 16 to 22 June, we copy edited articles on the themes of nature and the environment along with requests. 12 participating editors completed 35 copy edits. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

July Drive: The year's fourth backlog-elimination drive was a great success, clearing all articles tagged in January and February, and bringing the copy-editing backlog to a low of five months and a record low of 585 articles while also completing 48 requests. Of the 30 people who signed up, 29 copyedited at least one article, a participation level last matched in May 2015. Final results and awards are listed here.

August Blitz: From 18 to 24 August, we copy edited articles tagged in March 2019 and requests. 12 participating editors completed 26 copy edits on the blitz. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: As of 03:00, 23 September 2019 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors had processed 413 requests since 1 January. The backlog of tagged articles stood at 599 articles, close to our record month-end low of 585.

Requests page: We are experimenting with automated archiving of copy edit requests; a discussion on REQ Talk (permalinked) initiated by Bobbychan193 has resulted in Zhuyifei1999 writing a bot script for the Guild. Testing is now underway and is expected to be completed by 3 October; for this reason, no manual archiving of requests should be done until the testing period is over. We will then assess the bot's performance and discuss whether to make this arrangement permanent.

September Drive: Our current backlog-elimination drive is open until 23:59 on 30 September (UTC) and is open to all copy editors. Sign up today!

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Reidgreg, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Hi Amory, is the Capricorn script working for you? I keep getting an API error (code: notoken) that I wasn't getting a few days ago. It might just be a problem on my end since no one has complained to me about it, but I want to make sure. Thanks! Wug·a·po·des01:39, 14 October 2019 (UTC)

Hey Wugapodes — I haven't gotten around to using it, but just from that I think I know the problem! It's related to phab:T234576. I bet you were using mw.user.tokens.get('editToken'); that needs to be csrfToken now. The former was deprecated a while ago, but the removal was done somewhat suddenly for folks. Hi! Please could you make the same change, to stop loading the now-deleted thingy, at User:Lupin/recent2.js? Lupin himself is no longer active. Thanks in advance. Philip Trueman (talk) 09:29, 22 October 2019 (UTC)

I do run monobook, so I'd say that sounds like a very good possibility on Aaron Schulz and the Voice of All ID. TY Amory - and how's life treating you? — Ched (talk) 00:14, 26 October 2019 (UTC)

No problem, and good, thanks for asking! Spending a lot of time with the kiddo so I'm basically at "check my emails once in the evening" levels of activity, but it's been a good summer and fall. New Page Review newsletter November 2019

Hello Amorymeltzer,

This newsletter comes a little earlier than usual because the backlog is rising again and the holidays are coming very soon.

Getting the queue to 0

There are now 804 holders of the New Page Reviewer flag! Most of you requested the user right to be able to do something about the huge backlog but it's still roughly less than 10% doing 90% of the work. Now it's time for action.
Exactly one year ago there were 'only' 3,650 unreviewed articles, now we will soon be approaching 7,000 despite the growing number of requests for the NPR user right. If each reviewer soon does only 2 reviews a day over five days, the backlog will be down to zero and the daily input can then be processed by every reviewer doing only 1 review every 2 days - that's only a few minutes work on the bus on the way to the office or to class! Let's get this over and done with in time to relax for the holidays.
Want to join? Consider adding the NPP Pledge userbox.
Our next newsletter will announce the winners of some really cool awards.

Coordinator

Admin Barkeep49 has been officially invested as NPP/NPR coordinator by a unanimous consensus of the community. This is a complex role and he will need all the help he can get from other experienced reviewers.

This month's refresher course

Paid editing is still causing headaches for even our most experienced reviewers: This official Wikipedia article will be an eye-opener to anyone who joined Wikipedia or obtained the NPR right since 2015. See The Hallmarks to know exactly what to look for and take time to examine all the sources.

Tools
  • It is now possible to select new pages by date range. This was requested by reviewers who want to patrol from the middle of the list.
  • It is now also possible for accredited reviewers to put any article back into the New Pages Feed for re-review. The link is under 'Tools' in the side bar.
Reviewer Feedback

Would you like feedback on your reviews? Are you an experienced reviewer who can give feedback to other reviewers? If so there are two new feedback pilot programs. New Reviewer mentorship will match newer reviewers with an experienced reviewer with a new reviewer. The other program will be an occasional peer review cohort for moderate or experienced reviewers to give feedback to each other. The first cohort will launch November 13.

Second set of eyes
  • Not only are New Page Reviewers the guardians of quality of new articles, they are also in a position to ensure that pages are being correctly tagged for deletion and maintenance and that new authors are not being bitten. This is an important feature of your work, especially while some routine tagging for deletion can still be carried out by non NPR holders and inexperienced users. Read about it at the Monitoring the system section in the tutorial. If you come across such editors doing good work, don't hesitate to encourage them to apply for NPR.
  • Do be sure to have our talk page on your watchlist. There are often items that require reviewers' special attention, such as to watch out for pages by known socks or disruptive editors, technical issues and new developments, and of course to provide advice for other reviewers.
Arbitration Committee

The annual ArbCom election will be coming up soon. All eligible users will be invited to vote. While not directly concerned with NPR, Arbcom cases often lead back to notability and deletion issues and/or actions by holders of advanced user rights.

Community Wish list

There is to be no wish list for WMF encyclopedias this year. We thank Community Tech for their hard work addressing our long list of requirements which somewhat overwhelmed them last year, and we look forward to a successful completion.

Do you think it's ready to go? Feels a bit slim besides the user right changes but I'm struggling to find any other noteworthy information to include. Sam Walton (talk) 13:13, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

My thoughts exactly. I pinged some folks for a once-over, but I likewise haven't seen too much directly relevant. I reworded the ACE portion as nominations are now open. Will probably send it out a little later today. ~ Amory (utc) 15:38, 3 November 2019 (UTC)

A survey to improve the community consultation outreach process

Hello!

The Wikimedia Foundation is seeking to improve the community consultation outreach process for Foundation policies, and we are interested in why you didn't participate in a recent consultation that followed a community discussion you’ve been part of.

Please fill out this short survey to help us improve our community consultation process for the future. It should only take about three minutes.

The privacy policy for this survey is here. This survey is a one-off request from us related to this unique topic.

PC-protection on "J"

I see that you upgraded the protection to one-year semi-protection. Thanks for that. What about PC protection and other edits awaiting PC review? --George Ho (talk) 21:13, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by What about PC protection but I took care of the edits in the queue. There's a bug affecting PC review, and I wanted to document everything first. ~ Amory (utc) 21:17, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
I'll elaborate: The PC-protection is still there technically, especially by reading history logs, and I see "automatically accepted" and "accepted by X". I believe that it's not reset yet. --George Ho (talk) 21:23, 13 November 2019 (UTC)
Gotcha, thanks! Should be dealt with now — the bug is annoying, as it's inconsistent so it gets in the way of a varying number of things. Thanks for the follow-up. ~ Amory (utc) 21:26, 13 November 2019 (UTC)

ArbCom 2019 election voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:04, 19 November 2019 (UTC)

Google Code-In 2019 is coming - please mentor some documentation tasks!

Hello,

Google Code-In, Google-organized contest in which the Wikimedia Foundation participates, starts in a few weeks. This contest is about taking high school students into the world of opensource. I'm sending you this message because you recently edited a documentation page at the English Wikipedia.

I would like to ask you to take part in Google Code-In as a mentor. That would mean to prepare at least one task (it can be documentation related, or something else - the other categories are Code, Design, Quality Assurance and Outreach) for the participants, and help the student to complete it. Please sign up at the contest page and send us your Google account address to google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org, so we can invite you in!

From my own experience, Google Code-In can be fun, you can make several new friends, attract new people to your wiki and make them part of your community.

If you have any questions, please let us know at google-code-in-admins@lists.wikimedia.org.

Thank you!

editToken

Hello Amorymeltzer,

Your script User:Amorymeltzer/ajaxsendcomment.js is no longer functional because it attempts to get an editToken from mw.user.tokens. The script should instead get a csrfToken. editTokens were removed from mw.user.tokens on October 3, 2019 at Phabricator during this edit as they were redundant to csrfTokens.BrandonXLF (talk) 00:06, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

Indeed, yes. I don't think it's actually working, but I've made the change.
That being said, I don't think you needed to send ~50 messages en masse, some of which in regards to beta or sandbox scripts, to users, some of whom are indeffed. ~ Amory (utc) 10:41, 25 November 2019 (UTC)

GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Closing.

Hi, I would like to request the definitive closure of this account, as I no longer intend to be an active user. Thanks. Yiucjb50 (talk) 02:32, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Nothing more needed, then, you can just stop editing. I saw that Discospinster mentioned you could request a block, but I wouldn't grant a selfblock, so simply walking away is all you need. ~ Amory (utc) 11:04, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
The fact is that I would like to close my account so that I can't log in again (infinite block). However I only have one question to ask: If I try to make the same request to another administrator who takes this type of request into consideration, is there any possibility that my request will be accepted? Yiucjb50 (talk) 15:32, 19 December 2019 (UTC)
Possibly, but I would think most wouldn't. Self blocks are typically for specific lengths for specific purposes for established accounts. ~ Amory (utc) 16:17, 19 December 2019 (UTC)

Reviewer of the Year

This year's Reviewer of the Year is Rosguill. Having gotten the reviewer PERM in August 2018, they have been a regular reviewer of articles and redirects, been an active participant in the NPP community, and has been the driving force for the emerging NPP Source Guide that will help reviewers better evaluate sourcing and notability in many countries for which it has historically been difficult.

Special commendation again goes to Onel5969 who ends the year as one of our most prolific reviewers for the second consecutive year. Thanks also to Boleyn and JTtheOG who have been in the top 5 for the last two years as well.

Several newer editors have done a lot of work with CAPTAIN MEDUSA and DannyS712 (who has also written bots which have patrolled thousands of redirects) being new reviewers since this time last year.

Thanks to them and to everyone reading this who has participated in New Page Patrol this year.

Redirect autopatrol

A recent Request for Comment on creating a new redirect autopatrol pseduo-permission was closed early. New Page Reviewers are now able to nominate editors who have an established track record creating uncontroversial redirects. At the individual discretion of any administrator or after 24 hours and a consensus of at least 3 New Page Reviewers an editor may be added to a list of users whose redirects will be patrolled automatically by DannyS712 bot III.

Source Guide Discussion

Set to launch early in the new year is our first New Page Patrol Source Guide discussion. These discussions are designed to solicit input on sources in places and topic areas that might otherwise be harder for reviewers to evaluate. The hope is that this will allow us to improve the accuracy of our patrols for articles using these sources (and/or give us places to perform a WP:BEFORE prior to nominating for deletion). Please watch the New Page Patrol talk page for more information.

This month's refresher course

While New Page Reviewers are an experienced set of editors, we all benefit from an occasional review. This month consider refreshing yourself on Wikipedia:Notability (geographic features). Also consider how we can take the time for quality in this area. For instance, sources to verify human settlements, which are presumed notable, can often be found in seconds. This lets us avoid the (ugly) 'Needs more refs' tag.

Draft:TRON (cryptocurrency)

Hey ho! I've been working through old article drafts and have been looking at Draft:TRON (cryptocurrency). You deleted an article under this title a couple of years ago. It seems to me that the article now drafted meets the general notability requirements (rather narrowly, but I do this it's OK), and that it's got a neutral point of view. I was trying to work out how to unprotect the page to accept the review, and WP:PROTECT implies that I should ask you first, as the deleter of the original article, if that is OK. What do you think? Thanks! Alarichall (talk) 14:02, 2 January 2020 (UTC)

Hey Alarichall, sorry for the delay; super busy 'round these parts. I deleted it after an AffD, and I do recall there being a number of shenanigans around its (re)creation at the time that warranted protection (Praxidicae might remember better). At any rate, I think I'd agree with you, the sources are much improved (WSJ, TechCrunch, Newsweek) and the article is much better (it's not an area of my expertise, but I'd keep in mind that the area is under WP:GS/Crypto). At any rate, do you want to wait for it to go through the review, or do you want me to unprotect it so you can move it yourself? ~ Amory (utc) 20:21, 4 January 2020 (UTC)
Thanks for the reply! No need to apologise about slowness. I've been trying to clear out all AfC pending submissions that are four months old, and this is on the list. So if you are able to unprotect TRON (cryptocurrency) so that I can accept Draft:TRON (cryptocurrency) through the review process, that would be lovely. I haven't dealt with this problem before so I don't really know the process, but I assume that when you've unprotected the page I'll be able to accept the draft using the AFCH beta tool as usual. Alarichall (talk) 05:14, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
Oh, I now see that you or someone else has now sorted this. Thanks! Alarichall (talk) 05:17, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
All hail Primefac! ~ Amory (utc) 12:35, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
Heh... no worries. I'm not really sure the article should have been salted, but when at least three people agree on something it seems improper to do anything but rubber stamp their decision ;-) Primefac (talk) 15:31, 5 January 2020 (UTC)
