Relist request
[edit]Regarding this: Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_August_25#Category:Roman_Catholic_cardinals_by_X. For convenience, would you mind simply giving it another shot at a relisting instead, please? Chicbyaccident (talk) 13:00, 3 October 2018 (UTC)
- I've already processed the change at CFDW. But I have no objection to an immediate renomination started by you, and you can quote me on that. Good Ol’factory (talk) 13:04, 3 October 2018 (UTC)

Sankethi
[edit]Hi, I'm not disputing that Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_October_6#Category:Sankethi_people was a no consensus situation but does CfD not work like AfD? Generally, at AfD I think a discussion would be kept open longer via the re-listing process in the hope that consensus would emerge, although obviously things can still end up NC. I see that not every discussion on that page has been closed.
I probably should have specifically notified the India wikiproject rather than rely on the central notification system, which I have long thought doesn't get watched by many people (and certainly not by me!). - Sitush (talk) 02:09, 16 October 2018 (UTC)
- Sometimes things get relisted if the closer thinks that there is hope of consensus emerging. I guess I just didn't see that the two positions (ethnicity vs. caste) was going to be reconciled. I'm OK with you re-nominating immediately if you feel a consensus could emerge. Good Ol’factory (talk) 05:33, 16 October 2018 (UTC)

In closing this category's CFD as "split", what were you intending to happen to the category itself once it was emptied? Should it be deleted, or converted into a disambiguation page, or something else? Someone tagged it for deletion based on the CFD, but I've declined it because I'm not clear about your intentions. If you'd express your intentions (or carry them out), I think it would make things a bit simpler; thank you. Nyttend (talk) 04:26, 26 October 2018 (UTC)

Withdraw cfd?
[edit]I'd like to withdraw this cfd as people seem not to have read/understood it properly. Perhaps rephrase it and re-present in a month or so. Or one by one. I had not thought it even slightly controversial. Is this possible? I can remove the tags easily enough with AWB. The companion one in the other direction on 5 Nov seems to be going better, or least more succinctly. Oculi (talk) 10:48, 7 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, you can just close it as withdrawn. Or, if you like, I can do so. Just write a comment at the bottom of the discussion saying that you'd like to withdraw the nomination. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:29, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
- On second thoughts I'll leave it up. Seems to have become quite amusing and one can probably live with a confusion of z and s in remote corners of a small fraction of the ephemera that is Wikipedia. Oculi (talk) 13:38, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

Empty categories
[edit]Hello, Good Ol’factory,
I've been tagging a lot of empty categories this week. I noticed that you deleted a few LDS-related categories I tagged yesterday (and I've run into other admins who deleted some others I tagged) before the 7 day period is over when empty categories are moved from the holding category Category:Empty categories awaiting deletion to Category:Candidates for speedy deletion as empty categories where they are then deleted by an admin.
Am I missing something? Are you aware of the situation with these particular categories and knew they were safe to delete? You have been working on Wikipedia (and specifically with categories) for MUCH longer than I have so I thought actual practice might differ from the guidance on the empty category page. Let me know! Thanks! Liz Read! Talk! 22:50, 8 November 2018 (UTC)
- Hi Liz. The only reason I deleted those when tagged was because I created them and knew that the only articles that populated them previously had been deleted at AfD. Sorry for the confusion on jumping the gun. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:31, 8 November 2018 (UTC)

category move closure
[edit]Good Ol', is there is process for requesting a closing for a category move? I opened this long one [[6]] and based on the non-consensus I would like to request that the move from about a month back be overturned as no consensus once involved/concerned editors were informed. If the closing of the Oct 26th discussion isn't the correct way to challenge the previous move what is? Thanks! Springee (talk) 01:06, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- @Springee: As I told you before at Mr Brown's talk page, you need to wait for an uninvolved administrator to close the CFD. You, as an involved party, do not determine whether there is consensus or not. RGloucester — ☎ 01:24, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- @RGloucester:, It has been 2 weeks and the discussion has been silent for at least one. Since Good Olfactory closed some of the other discussion I asked for their advice. Perhaps you can let them answer the question I asked of them. Springee (talk) 03:38, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- When one of the patrolling administrators deems it appropriate to close the discussion, they will do so. That's the answer Mr Brown gave you, as did I. No further action is required on your part. Please allow the process to conclude in its usual manner, and stop trying to influence it through back channel talk page communications. RGloucester — ☎ 03:43, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- Ok, please understand that no further action is required on your part to ask questions that were not directed at you. Your accusations of bad faith aren't needed or productive. Springee (talk) 04:01, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- I am not going to close the discussion, since I closed the previous one and have participated in the new discussion with a comment that I felt the matter should have gone to WP:DRV rather than a new CFD discussion. There is no way to force a closure; as stated by RGloucester, we just have to wait for an uninvolved admin to close the discussion. Those who participate in the discussion do not decide whether or not there is a consensus; the closer decides that. Good Ol’factory (talk) 04:38, 10 November 2018 (UTC)
- The issue of if we revert to the stable name after a discussion has been enacted is at Wikipedia talk:Consensus#Enacted discussions. Crouch, Swale (talk) 20:47, 10 November 2018 (UTC)

Good Olfactory, the discussion has been closed with no consensus which is basically what I would have expected. What is the appropriate forum to review the previous closing that resulted in the category name change? Thanks! Springee (talk) 01:34, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
It would be WP:DRV, I think. Unless there is a "rename review" forum out there I don't know about. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:35, 19 November 2018 (UTC)Try Wikipedia:Move review. That's probably more on point. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:37, 19 November 2018 (UTC)- @Jc37: Move review doesn't do categories. But, I'm not sure what Springee is asking for...the discussion was closed as "no consensus to rename" to automobiles. Unless he disagrees with that closure? This should be settled now. The category stays at cars. We can of course ask the closer for his opinion, so I've pinged him. RGloucester — ☎ 02:00, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Please pardon the (semi-)pun, but that discussion was a near train wreck. There was no consensus to take any categorical action. (oh, the pun-ishment! : )
- As for the comments above, not to speak for GO, but I think he was implying that going to MRV to address the previous Requested Move might be a better first step than DRV, since DRV deals with deletions, not moves. I hope this helps. - jc37 02:09, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- (ec) Yes, I believe they are asking for a review of the original discussion that I closed, which resulted in the change from "automobiles" to "cars". If move review doesn't do categories, then I suppose WP:DRV may be the best place. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:10, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- That doesn't really make any sense...are you saying that, after having had this new huge discussion at CFD, we're now going to go back and question the PRIOR close, rather than this close? That sounds like the definition of WP:FORUMSHOPPING. RGloucester — ☎ 02:13, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- In my opinion, the user should have gone straight to DRV and never minded the second CFD. I don't know what exactly they have in mind; I won't speak for them. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:16, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- OK, here is how I see it. The original move was based only on the views of 4 editors and was closed just days before the second one was opened (in response to category moves that made myself and others aware of the original move discussion) with wider participation. Based on the wider participation I would say the original move should be challenged because it's now clear there isn't community consensus for the move from automobiles to cars. The standard practice when there is no consensus is to undo the change. That is basically what I intend to argue. The only question is what is the correct venue. I got it wrong once so I want to make sure I get it right the second time. Springee (talk) 05:38, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Springee, have you actually read the closing statement of the recent CFD? There is no consensus to move the category from cars to automobiles, not from automobiles to cars. That means that there is a consensus that the category should remain at cars. You'd be wise to take Mr Bratland's advice. RGloucester — ☎ 06:15, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- Yes, I did read it. The consensus is clear that the community doesn't agree which category name is appropriate. Based on that we should use the long standing name. This would be simple if this were an article content discussion. It happens all the time. A local consensus of say 4 editors agrees to a change. The change is made. Another editor comes in and challenges the change. A RfC is opened. If that formal RfC closes with no-consensus for the change then then we revert to the long standing version. Why would we do something different here? Springee (talk) 13:32, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- That's not what the closure says. The closure says there is no consensus to move away from 'cars'. The previous consensus was not a 'local consensus'. Unlike what you did, there was no canvassing. It was simply a normal CfD. That doesn't get erased, nor does the closure of the second CfD, which is clearly in favour of the category remaining at 'cars'. Any action you take now will be seen as WP:FORUMSHOPPING and dealt with accordingly. RGloucester — ☎ 14:07, 19 November 2018 (UTC)
- RG, this will be my last reply on Good Olfactory's talk page to you regarding this line of discussion. The discussion was clear with, IIRC 12 editors about evenly split between those who think it should have stayed at Automobiles and those who think Cars is better. There was no "favored" side only a clear no consensus for one vs the other. Your claims of canvasing and forum shopping are both wrong and bad faith. Springee (talk) 15:07, 19 November 2018 (UTC)

Hi, you stated that the Coeroeni River starts in Brazil and then flows to Surinam, however, the boundary between Brazil and Surinam is in 1906 defined on the drainage divide so a Brazilian river by definition can never enter Surinam. Also TPC maps and Surinam topographic maps fron 1970 show the boundary on the divide. What is the source of this statement? Hans Erren (talk) 17:30, 16 November 2018 (UTC)

Conservative Jewish synagogues
[edit]Hi Good Ol’factory
Are you sure about your close of Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2018_November_19#Category:Conservative_Jewish_synagogues?
Looks to me more like it was evenly divided between the 2 options, and that a relisting would be more appropriate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:46, 28 November 2018 (UTC)
- Eh, reasonably sure, given that I left open the possibility for a nomination to pursue the alternative. I think you should nominate them all for renaming and see what happens. The most a relisting will get you to is a no consensus result, which doesn't really benefit anything if consistency one the goals. Good Ol’factory (talk) 22:14, 28 November 2018 (UTC)

Deleted Category:Fictional Detroit Police Department officers Recreated with Same Articles
[edit]Hello,
Back in 2016, you closed a CFD discussion here as delete because the category failed WP:SMALLCAT 2 articles with little room for growth. Recently, it was re-created with those same 2 articles. I'm not opposed to recreating previously small categories if they article count grows but, in this case, it seems like a waste of time to bring it back to CFD.
Is there another approach you would recommend in this case? RevelationDirect (talk) 02:33, 31 January 2019 (UTC)

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)
[edit]ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.
Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.
We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.
For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:03, 4 May 2019 (UTC)

Pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity
[edit]Established policy provides for removal of the administrative permissions of users who have not made any edits or logged actions in the preceding twelve months. Because you have been inactive, your administrative permissions will be removed if you do not return to activity within the next month.
Inactive administrators are encouraged to rejoin the project in earnest rather than to make token edits to avoid loss of administrative permissions. Resources and support for reengaging with the project are available at Wikipedia:WikiProject Editor Retention/administrators. If you do not intend to rejoin the project in the foreseeable future, please consider voluntarily resigning your administrative permissions by making a request at the bureaucrats' noticeboard.
Thank you for your past contributions to the project. — JJMC89 bot 00:07, 1 December 2019 (UTC)

You can leave a note on my talk page if you have questions. Thanks!

- Good Ol'factory, you were greatly missed. Hopefully your health is doing considerably better now. In a world growing ever more busy and all the more crazy in so many aspects, particularly for those pages to which you have so greatly contributed in the past, your efforts are likely going to be needed now more than ever before. I understand you left for a health-related reason. Hopefully whatever you were dealing with has improved. I can't say this for certain, but I am reasonably confident I may be in the minority of editors who has a first-hand knowledge of how health can interfere with activity here. With all of that said, best wishes for your good health to be maintained going forward, and a very hearty and sincere welcome back to you. Keep up the great work! --Jgstokes (talk) 02:31, 25 June 2020 (UTC)

Third opinion request at Enos (Book of Mormon prophet)
[edit]Can I get a third opinion from you over at Enos (Book of Mormon prophet)? There's a disagreement whether an explicit statement is needed regarding the historicity of Enos, such as this. I argue that the "According to the BoM..." or "is a figure in the BoM" is sufficient for NPOV here at at most other BoM figure articles and the explicit statement boarders on needless POV-pushing. I do think such a statement is warranted on larger articles like Nephites or Lamanites where the historicity question for these topics explicitly appears in sources. The argument to not include such a statement is supported IMO by the lack of such a statement on biblical figure articles like Noah or Methuselah of similar historicity. This is also inline with the previous feedback at WT:RELIGION. Thanks. --FyzixFighter (talk) 18:31, 4 July 2020 (UTC)

Serbian political parties: name changes and categories
[edit]Hello. I notice that you've emptied "Category:Bosniak Democratic Union of Sandžak politicians" and "Category:New Democracy (Serbia) politicians". I understand your rationale for doing so, but it strikes me that this approach creates a problem, which I can perhaps best articulate with the following question: how should we account for someone who was a member of, say, New Democracy and who left the party before it was renamed as "Liberals of Serbia"? Categorizing them as a Liberals of Serbia politician doesn't strike me as quite on the mark. CJCurrie (talk) 04:46, 15 July 2020 (UTC)
- That's fine with me if you think the previous approach is better. I wouldn't oppose a reversal. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:19, 15 July 2020 (UTC)

Abbreviated category
[edit]Re [7], I apologise, and now think Armbrust was correct i.e. speedy moves can go ahead, as there was a recent RM for the main page.
As the proposals were exposed for 48 hours I think they could be processed forthwith (except the Directors category), if you would indicate here that you un-withdraw them. – Fayenatic London 08:56, 20 August 2020 (UTC)
- That's fine, thanks. I will un-withdraw them and they can be processed. I don't really agree with keeping the one directors category different, which is why I hesitated and withdrew them all, thinking that consistency among all the categories would be preferable. But I suppose it's fine to process them. Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:43, 20 August 2020 (UTC)

China and Taiwan
[edit]Hello! In this edit [8], flags which are mostly flags of the free nation of the Republic of China (Taiwan), a state rated 93/100 in freedom by Freedom House [9], a better score than the USA but below the score of Canada, were wantonly combined with those of the People's Republic of China, rated 10/100, on par with Cuba and Saudi Arabia, and being a state which, in its propaganda at least, seeks conquest of the smaller state. Is that the level of nuance we want in Wikipedia? China PRC has so few flags because of the existential requirements of the authoritarian dictatorship, which sees local flags as a potential threat to national unity and stability. On the other hand, Taiwan is a free, normal nation that has local flags. 1949 was a long time ago. Taiwan is Taiwan. Isn't that view more rational than the way the page is done now? If we seperate out the Taiwan flags, won't Wikipedia readers be able to find them in a more intuitive manner? Please let me know how you are thinking about this. 'Chinese characters' may be a better name for the group given that Chinese characters are used in several Chinese languages, Mandarin, Cantonese, etc. [10] Geographyinitiative (talk) 09:13, 25 August 2020 (UTC)
- It's a controversial issue, as you have noted. I don't have a position on whether flags for China and Taiwan should be grouped together or separately. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:34, 26 August 2020 (UTC)

CfD backlog
[edit]Hi, would you have the time closing a bunch of CfD discussions from July? We once had about 100 nominations in a single day, in June or July I believe, and since that day the backlog has been very sizeable. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:24, 4 September 2020 (UTC)
National Monuments are neither buildings, structures, nor monuments or memorials
[edit]Please see the note on the above categories - United States National Monuments are not buildings or structures, and are not "monuments and memorials" by the category definition. They are protected areas. NorthBySouthBaranof (talk) 02:35, 15 September 2020 (UTC)
- The categories are hidden and are primarily for maintenance, so I don't think a pedantic adherence to a specific definition is necessary for a Monument to be included in a category for monuments. I am not sure what definition you are referring to as Category:Wikipedia categories named after monuments and memorials does not have one. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:48, 15 September 2020 (UTC)

[edit]Please UNHIDE all these speedy discussions - I have given my oppose rationale, sometimes in some detail. Do I have to repeat it all again??? This is disreputable. Johnbod (talk) 02:58, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- They are not hidden; they are in drop-down boxes. (Subtle, I know.) I don't think it's too onerous for a user to click a button to see the (sometimes repetitive) speedy discussion. Including speedy discussions in this way is pretty standard, so I don't think it's in any way disreputable, of all things. You can repeat yourself or not in the full discussion; it's up to you. I have full confidence that the closers will read everything in the nominations and discussions, including the content in the drop-down boxes. Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:01, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- Nonsense - I DO think it is too onerous, & I don't have ANY confidence that those participating will all read my rationale. You have taken the opportunity to give a long spiel with YOUR arguments, but have just hidden mine. I'm astonished you can't see the issue here. Why the hell do I have to repeat myself? - you've copied my comments, but gone to the extra trouble of hiding them. It's about as "subtle" as a Florida Electoral Commission. Johnbod (talk) 03:35, 28 September 2020 (UTC)
- You seem pretty worked up about this. I think we'll leave it there. I'm generally pretty tolerant, but do not change the text that I write in a nomination. You're free to duplicate your comments in your own text if you are worried about them being hidden, just don't change how I format the nomination I start. I have deleted the drop boxes to prevent further tantrums here or elsewhere. Good Ol’factory (talk) 00:28, 29 September 2020 (UTC)

no consensus cfd
[edit]- Wikipedia:Categories_for_discussion/Log/2020_October_5#Category:Pages_using_deprecated_image_syntax, nominated by EEng
I am not sure how a no consensus judgement was reached here? As a raw count of votes, including the nomination, 4 were in favour of deletion and 2 in favour of retention. At a closer analysis of arguments, keep arguments are wholly unsupported. The syntax was unilaterally 'deprecated' by one editor without discussion, it is core functionality, and de facto it is indeed not deprecated (it has 86,456 usages!). So that entirely discredits the 2nd keep and the first wasn't substantiated anyway. So I'm not sure how the argument was balanced in favour of no consensus? ProcrastinatingReader (talk) 01:35, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, you're right. I misread the deprecation issue, or at least got it backwards in my mind. I am going to change it to delete. Thanks for your note. Good Ol’factory (talk) 01:43, 6 November 2020 (UTC)

Violence against Hindus
[edit]First of all, thanks a lot for closing so many discussions in the last 24 hours! With respect to the merge of Category:Anti-Hindu violence in India (discussion of September 30) there is probably a misunderstanding, as I meant to keep at least the "in India" part of the category name, since there is also violence against Hindus outside India. Marcocapelle (talk) 08:31, 6 November 2020 (UTC)
- Right. So it would be Category:Anti-Hindu violence in India and it would be a subcategory of Category:Anti-Hindu violence? Good Ol’factory (talk) 23:51, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
- Marcocapelle, can you check now and see if that is right? Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:05, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
- At the same time I think there is consensus for changing "anti-Hindu" to "against Hindus", so if that is correct it should ultimately become Category:Violence against Hindus in India. Marcocapelle (talk) 15:38, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
- Marcocapelle, can you check now and see if that is right? Good Ol’factory (talk) 03:05, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
Advice and perhaps an apology
[edit]As a seasoned editor whose work I respect, I seek your advice as a novice, and perhaps come to offer you an apology. On talk page Talk:Russell_M._Nelson#Devil_Worship_and_other_WP:UNDUE_content, in attempting to determine consensus, I made a table where I put you as being in favor of having the content their based on being the original author of that content. One editor felt that it was dishonest for me to include you. If you feel this way, I most humbly apologize and will remove it. Also, am I beating a dead horse? Am I wrong to continue this already long discussion? Am I just wrong? Epachamo (talk) 21:46, 9 November 2020 (UTC)
- No apology necessary: it was reasonable of you to assume that I supported inclusion. When I added the material, I really did not think that it was going to blow up into a dispute. I thought that if anything, the inclusion would illustrate how Nelson and his family members become the targets of crazies. I have posted on the talk page, and although I was initially inclined to support inclusion, I have changed my position to neutral. I really don't know enough about BLP practices to have a well-supported position. Sometimes it's fun to see the fur fly on WP, and I can get behind whatever is decided by consensus. I don't think the horse is dead – not by a long shot. It's a legitimate issue to discuss. Good Ol’factory (talk) 02:34, 10 November 2020 (UTC)
