New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022
Hello Red-tailed hawk,
Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.
Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.
Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.
Suggestions:
- There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
- Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
- Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
- This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.
Backlog:
Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

New Pages Patrol newsletter January 2023
Hello Red-tailed hawk,
- Backlog
The October drive reduced the backlog from 9,700 to an amazing 0! Congratulations to WaddlesJP13 who led with 2084 points. See this page for further details. The queue is steadily rising again and is approaching 2,000. It would be great if <2,000 were the “new normal”. Please continue to help out even if it's only for a few or even one patrol a day.
- 2022 Awards
Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. For the full details see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone!
Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)
New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js
to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js
Redirects: Some of our redirect reviewers have reduced their activity and the backlog is up to 9,000+ (two months deep). If you are interested in this distinctly different task and need any help, see this guide, this checklist, and spend some time at WP:RFD.
Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

New Pages Patrol newsletter June 2023
Hello Red-tailed hawk,
Backlog
Redirect drive: In response to an unusually high redirect backlog, we held a redirect backlog drive in May. The drive completed with 23851 reviews done in total, bringing the redirect backlog to 0 (momentarily). Congratulations to Hey man im josh who led with a staggering 4316 points, followed by Meena and Greyzxq with 2868 and 2546 points respectively. See this page for more details. The redirect queue is steadily rising again and is steadily approaching 4,000. Please continue to help out, even if it's only for a few or even one review a day.
Redirect autopatrol: All administrators without autopatrol have now been added to the redirect autopatrol list. If you see any users who consistently create significant amounts of good quality redirects, consider requesting redirect autopatrol for them here.
WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team, consisting of Sam, Jason and Susana, and also some patches from Jon, has been hard at work updating PageTriage. They are focusing their efforts on modernising the extension's code rather than on bug fixes or new features, though some user-facing work will be prioritised. This will help make sure that this extension is not deprecated, and is easier to work on in the future. In the next month or so, we will have an opt-in beta test where new page patrollers can help test the rewrite of Special:NewPagesFeed, to help find bugs. We will post more details at WT:NPPR when we are ready for beta testers.
Articles for Creation (AFC): All new page reviewers are now automatically approved for Articles for Creation draft reviewing (you do not need to apply at WT:AFCP like was required previously). To install the AFC helper script, visit Special:Preferences, visit the Gadgets tab, tick "Yet Another AFC Helper Script", then click "Save". To find drafts to review, visit Special:NewPagesFeed, and at the top left, tick "Articles for Creation". To review a draft, visit a submitted draft, click on the "More" menu, then click "Review (AFCH)". You can also comment on and submit drafts that are unsubmitted using the script.
You can review the AFC workflow at WP:AFCR. It is up to you if you also want to mark your AFC accepts as NPP reviewed (this is allowed but optional, depends if you would like a second set of eyes on your accept). Don't forget that draftspace is optional, so moves of drafts to mainspace (even if they are not ready) should not be reverted, except possibly if there is conflict of interest.
Pro tip: Did you know that visual artists such as painters have their own SNG? The most common part of this "creative professionals" criteria that applies to artists is WP:ARTIST 4b (solo exhibition, not group exhibition, at a major museum) or 4d (being represented within the permanent collections of two museums).
Reminders
- Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.

WikiCup 2023 September newsletter
The fourth round of the competition has finished, with anyone scoring less than 673 points being eliminated. It was a high scoring round with all but one of the contestants who progressed to the final having achieved an FA during the round. The highest scorers were
- Epicgenius, with 2173 points topping the scores, gained mainly from a featured article, 38 good articles and 9 DYKs. He was followed by
- Sammi Brie, with 1575 points, gained mainly from a featured article, 28 good articles and 50 good article reviews. Close behind was
- Thebiguglyalien, with 1535 points mainly gained from a featured article, 15 good articles, 26 good article reviews and lots of bonus points.
Between them during round 4, contestants achieved 12 featured articles, 3 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 126 good articles, 46 DYK entries, 14 ITN entries, 67 featured article candidate reviews and 147 good article reviews. Congratulations to our eight finalists and all who participated! It was a generally high-scoring and productive round and I think we can expect a highly competitive finish to the competition.
Remember that any content promoted after the end of round 4 but before the start of round 5 can be claimed in round 5. Remember too that you must claim your points within 10 days of "earning" them and within 24 hours of the end of the final. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. It would be helpful if this list could be cleared of any items no longer relevant. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, please do your bit to keep down the review backlogs! Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
I will be standing down as a judge after the end of the contest. I think the Cup encourages productive editors to improve their contributions to Wikipedia and I hope that someone else will step up to take over the running of the Cup. Sturmvogel 66 (talk), and Cwmhiraeth (talk)

Hello, Red-tailed hawk. Just wanted to say that you have one of the best user pages here. The photo is fantastic. Re:copyvio at Georgia-related pages
Hey Red-tailed hawk, I noticed your comment here.[1] I suspect that these instances of copyright violations may be connected to this blocked user [2] Pinging Diannaa - LouisAragon (talk) 21:48, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hello. I've restored a cv-unsure template to the article so that the note on the talk page can be discussed. I'm a bit loath to slap a {{copyvio}} tag and send to Copyproblems with out a more definitive look, since I can't myself look at the book sources. I was unaware of the historical Georgian copyvio problem; thank you for making the connection and pinging someone who's much more likely to know than me. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 21:55, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi there. I don't remember this user. He did not have any edits to this particular article. — Diannaa (talk) 22:30, 16 December 2023 (UTC)
- While not specifically targeting this particular article, he [Georgiano] has edited numerous similar articles. The likelihood of someone disseminating copyright violations in articles related to the Medieval era of a relatively unknown country with a population of four million is rather low (based on my experience). Moreover, I believe that only Georgiano has been responsible for the dissemination of Georgia-related copyright violations to this extent. - LouisAragon (talk) 16:02, 19 December 2023 (UTC)

Impersonators
Hey, just a heads up, I recall it being discussed on one of the RFAs recently (can't remember which one exactly) that it is technically a violation of WP:INVOLVED for you to block accounts that are impersonating you. Taking Out The Trash (talk) 19:01, 4 February 2024 (UTC)
- Huh. I had consulted off-wiki with a few folks, and they had seemed to indicate that it was A-OK to go ahead and block them in straightforward cases. If the consensus is that it's WP:INVOLVED to block those accounts, and also that I should avoid doing that, I'll avoid doing so going forward. Would you be willing to send a link to that RfA discussion, when you get the chance? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 19:04, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

In straightforward cases (e.g., blatant vandalism), the community has historically endorsed the obvious action of any administrator – even if involved – on the basis that any reasonable administrator would have probably come to the same conclusion.

Could you consider dropping by Wikipedia:WikiProject Military history/Assessment/Igor Mangushev and addressing some of the issues raised? My apologies for how long this review has taken, but trying to get it moving. Hawkeye7 (discuss) 19:57, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- Hi! I had forgotten entirely about this review (Upon reading your message, I initially had thought this was the first time I had heard about it, but after checking my email it looks like I got a ping in July about it). I can try to take a look at some point over the next week, though I will admit that I am an absolute novice as it pertains to A-class reviews. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 20:07, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
- @Hawkeye7: I've looked over the item. I broadly agree that there is an issue with comprehensiveness in the article; I think the article is broad in coverage, but I don't think it's quite comprehensive (surely, there has to be some Russian-language coverage of his childhood or life prior to turning 23 somewhere), so honestly I don't think the article is going to be up to A-class standards without additional research and substance in the article. I'm also not quite able to remedy this—my Russian-language skills are limited to doing things like saying "hi"—so I don't think I'm quite going to be able to get the article over the A-class hump. I'll note that I haven't really been actively involved in maintaining the article since February/March; I played no part in the GA review process, and CT55555 alone deserves the credit for getting the article up to GA quality from B/C-class. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 00:51, 5 January 2024 (UTC)

DRN or ANI?
I came across the article Companion (Doctor Who) and noticed it had several problems. Before tearing into it, I engaged on the talk page. I'll admit I came in hot, as I often do, but I kept the discussion focused on my perceived problems with the article. The other editors responded by circling the wagons and more or less daring me to make the first edit, while assuring me it would almost certainly be reverted.
I want to improve this article, but I'm not sure if this is an issue for DRN or ANI. Just Another Cringy Username (talk) 07:39, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- (talk page stalker) If you want my two cents, BRD is your friend. Make the edits you wanna make, then the ball's in their court. Consensus is always burdened on the person who wants to include the content. (And maybe ease up on the "there's a cabal of fanboys out to get me and ruin everything" rhetoric. Not the most productive.) theleekycauldron (talk • she/her) 07:57, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
- WP:BRD is advisable, though it would be probably most helpful to engage in thorough and specific talk page discussion that propose specific changes before you take it to a noticeboard. This seems to be a content dispute rather than a conduct dispute, so I'd say that avoiding ANI is wise. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 15:21, 19 January 2024 (UTC)
Hello, Red-tailed hawk,
It's nice to see you helping out with closing AFD discussions we can always use more admin closers. Just as a head's up though but the common practice among many closers is that if there is only a deletion nomination statement and one editor supporting deletion, the discussion is closed as a Soft Delete because of the low participation in the discussion. This means that the article can be restored upon request at WP:REFUND. Of course, if you have questions about this, please inquire with other admins who frequent AFD discussions. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 03:10, 20 January 2024 (UTC)
- Hi Liz! Thank you for your message; I'm aware of soft deletion. The article you've linked above in the section heading was not eligible for soft deletion due to a contested PROD. It looked like there was consensus among participants to delete; the arguments by the two participants, while not presented in a source-by-source SA Table, were based in policy. The closure was made following a relist. This was intentionally closed as a hard delete. — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 04:07, 20 January 2024 (UTC)

Hi. Sorry, I just wanted to point out that the page history I linked (Seoul Subway Line 3), in my AIV report, also included an older account doing the same DUCK behaviour of redirecting: <this one>. That one is also glocked, one of the other-wiki blocks for that account also link to an LTA page. Your sock's signature
With apologies, I do not care for it at all. It's not the signature per se. I have vague recollections that I used to rather like it before, which must have been before you became an admin. It links to this talkpage which gets highlighted by the admin+ highlighter script and the result is an abomination that requires of me extra effort not just to read what it says but to not skip three or more lines of text in its general vicinity. Maybe you could find a combination that works fine with and without the highlighter, if possible? Or, if it's just me, do feel as free to ignore. Best, Usedtobecool ☎️ 16:38, 2 February 2024 (UTC)
- @Usedtobecool: I've changed the target in the talk part of the signature to target Red-tailed sock's talk page (which will then redirect to my main one). Does this resolve the issue? — Red-tailed sock (Red-tailed hawk's nest) 00:25, 4 February 2024 (UTC)

Stewards confirmation
Hello, I just wanted to thank you for your comments at the stewards confirmation. I know there's nothing personal in them, we've never interacted before (if I'm not mistaken) and so they were made solely for the good of the project, but I want you to know that I'm grateful for your public spirit and commitment to the encyclopaedia. Your comments were based on the notion that stewards should know when to step back from activities that involve only their home wikis. I agree with this, but I wanted to assure you that my sanction was completely unfounded also on the merits: thankfully I can prove (and did prove to the stewards) that I've never doxed, threatened or intimidated anyone. If you're interested I'm happy to provide details and evidence privately. So this really was a very unfortunate incident, and I hope that your and other editors' efforts to ensure that stewards don't use their global tools to handle local matters will bear fruit in the near future. Question
Hello! I just had a quick question i was hoping you could help me with. If a user account has multiple edits that need to be reverted, each on different articles, should we be warning after each individual revert that we impose? Elvisisalive95 (talk) 03:24, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
- Hi! Depends on the context. If it's obvious vandalism being repeated everywhere, it might just be best to give a higher-level-than-1 warning to start out with (particularly if it's bad faith). If it's someone not understanding the MoS, and that person making the same good faith mistake in a ton of places, then I'd advise to drop them a single handwritten note on their talk page that explains what they're doing and points them towards the relevant guidance.
- Is this a specific question regarding a specific case, or is this just a general question for the future? — Red-tailed hawk (nest) 03:36, 16 February 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you for the reply & advice. I recently applied for Rollback rights and was told to do more patrolling of recent changes as well as warn each and every user. Today there was an instance with a user whom edited 3 separate pages, 2 of which did not seem to be constructive and 1 of which was introducing unsourced material. I played it safe and warned for each instance Here, as i made 3 separate reverts but it seemed to me 1 single warning discussing everything would better suffice. I thought i’d ask for future cases! Thank you very much for your reply and help. Elvisisalive95 (talk) 04:07, 16 February 2024 (UTC)

The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
- Generalissima (submissions), who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher), 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
- Vami_IV (submissions), who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House and Doom (2016 video game), two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
- Sammi Brie (submissions), who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
- MaranoFan (submissions), who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and three DYKs
- Skyshifter (submissions), who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot, one DYK and two reviews
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.
Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. A goat for you!
No idea if you remember me or not from a few years ago with the Uyghur genocide debacle, but I was thrilled to finally log back in after a long time to see that you're an admin now! Congrats! Or, my sincerest condolences. Depending on your point of view. 😂 Seems appropriate to share a goat for a G.O.A.T. Hope all is well! Time for me to crawl back under my rock now.

Apollo Global Management Edit
Hi Red-tailed hawk,
Thanks for your question about my edit request at Talk: Apollo Global Management#Edit to lead sentence. I responded a while ago, but forgot to ping you, so you may have missed it. I clarified my reasoning, so I hope you will consider editing the Apollo Global Management page. Thank you, Chamanch123 (talk) 11:41, 12 March 2024 (UTC)
Invitation to ANI discussion
Hi Red-tailed hawk, could you have a look at WP:AN/I#UA0Volodymyr continuing to disregard topic ban? Since you are the unblocking admin, and the original blocking admin HJ Mitchell would like an opinion from you there. Thanks! — AP 499D25 (talk) 23:37, 13 March 2024 (UTC)
