G4 should only be used if the article was deleted as the result of an AfD discussion. Wikipedia:CSD#G4 states: "This does not apply to content that has been undeleted via deletion review, deleted via proposed deletion, or to speedy deletions (although in that case, the previous speedy criterion, or other speedy criteria, may apply)." My own opinion from what I read is that a bunch of buddies got together to create a film to honor the famous John Ford... and that these buddies and fans of old time westerns are themselves notables. Sourcing will be tough... but the article is definitely not crystal. The non did not follow through with WP:ATD and his AfD nomination is thus flawed. Please see the beginning stub of an article for my idea of format. Please note that this text originates from current Wikipedia articles. There is NO RANT going on. I intend to be professional in compiling information and not simply ranting against Republicans. There have been plenty of political scandals throughout history, and the Democrats have had their share through the years (see Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, etc.) Perhaps it is only fact that the republicans have been in power that they have had more scandals, IDK, but they certainly have had more than their share over the last 8-10 years).

Northern Utah

I don't think it's disparagement to say that there is debate as to whether or not a region should be treated as a separate political/demographic/social entity from a state. I PRODDED as it looks like a POV fork. I mean surely anything that needs to be said could be said in Utah. However, it might be best to see what develops. Are there separatists in Northern Utah yearning for freedom? Don't know. We can always delete if the thing disappoints. Hi, I'm Will, I was wondering how did you go about learning C++, did you go on a course or teach yourself? I have got C++ for dummies lol but it is pretty hard to get through... what the hell that does that make me? I guess it is about dedication..

I took a course several years ago. The ... For Dummies series is good as a simple reference, but not so much as a way to learn the language (or other subject). In my not exactly humble opinion, computer programming and software engineering are better learned through apprenticeships than from lectures or guidebooks. New Page Patrolling

Hi there! I've been going through the New Pages log, particularly the back end of it. I've come across an article (San jose jr. sharks) that you've added a tag to that hasn't been patrolled. I was wondering if you could make sure that you mark an article as patrolled before you tag it as then it won't show up on the list, which will save people patrolling an article that has already been looked at by an experienced editor like yourself.

Come back if and when your micronation has independent coverage. (Perhaps a deal with Aerican Empire might help you?) You tagged Silly Boy (Rihanna/Lady Gaga song) for speedy deletion as a WP:CSD#A9. Can I ask you to review the speedy deletion criteria? WP:CSD#A9 requires that there is no assertion of significance, and that we have no article on the artist. Quite obviously, we have articles on Rihanna and Lady Gaga, and a song by either one of them is an assertion of significance anyway.

We have a special procedure for use when the author of a page claims copyright, one that avoids speedy deletion before permission can be formalized: -blank the contents of the page by adding the {{subst:copyvio | url=insert URL here}} tag at the top (and removing the speedy deletion copyvio tag) , and list the page at Wikipedia:Copyright problems; see instructions at [[1]]. yes, I messed it up the first time by forgetting the nowiki. You did not do wrong, but there is a particular procedure for what seems like a genuine claim. There are admins who carefully & stringently follow up the stuff added to that page, so you need not fear it will escape deletion if the author does not follow up . Now, you are right that this procedure is not always followed, and in fact I have usually not been following it myself, until it was explained to me recently. The fundamental problem is that the text is generally unsatisfactory even in copyright is properly asserted,, but the rule for WP:CSD A11 is really ambiguous--so to avoid the ambiguities, most admins, including myself, have been using copyvio when possible. I am going to start a discussion on the WT:CSD talk page for speedy in a day or two when I have a chance to word it properly. Some general reworking of the instructions is needed--things get out of sync. Most organizations have a various elaborate ways of keeping policies in sync, but they require a degree of bureaucratic control that we do not have. The problem of spam in Wikipedia is of great concern, and we need to be careful how to do it. I am one of the more active admins in trying to explain to organizations how to do it properly, and getting rid of their stuff if they do not, so I intend to take a special interest in working on this one. To a certain extent I used this as a test example. I appreciate your patience , & I'll let you know when I put it on the policy discussion page. Dodgy Dev

I notice that the 'Dodgy Dev' page that I made has been deleted, despite me giving perfectly good reasons as to why this should not be done. The bride of Dodgy Dev has said herself that she is heartbroken after hearing that Dev does not have a page on Wikipedia. Dev himself was rather tearful. We feel that this is a great example of prejudice, persecution of the minorities and possibly racism of the Dodgy. Thank you for your welcome. While I have read most of the links you sent me I have yet to find answers as to why my article was deleted. I do not meet any of the requirements for speedy deletion and the article was patterned after tripadvisor which has more internal sources than external yet still remains while all my sources were 3rd party reliable and verifiable sources. Please tell me how that article has been allowed to remain while mine was not. I can give more examples if you require. No one but you has taken the time to do anything but criticize my article. I have been faced with censorship with no explanation to my questions. I asked for help and no one would answer my questions. True I did not ask for help like you outlined in the email to me but you would think that a petition on the talk page would generate some response other than further criticism. I am truly disappointed by this experience with Wikipedia as it has been censorship without explanation. I can handle criticism if it is explained and I am helped to learn but when I am unable to learn from the criticism I resent being criticized. Any thoughts? And will you be the one to finally answer my question as to why tripadvisor stays and meetinguniverse does not so I can learn?

I tagged the page for speedy deletion because I did not see any assertion of the web site's notability in the article. As I am not an admin, I did not delete the article. I suggest you continue the discussions you are already having with admins. Again, my issue was no assertion of notabiliy of the web site. Not everything is sufficiently notable for Wikipedia to include an article on it. For example, national leaders are notable; I am not (currently) notable. Why did you try to delete the page on Gillian Tett? I would appreciate an explanation. She is rather better known and probably more influential than you are, and I cannot see how you were abiding by Wikipedia's own quality standards when you made what appeared to be a cavalier, unjustifiable and possibly irrational decision. May I suggest that you be a little less zealous in your editing in such cases? Such apparently arbitrary and unjust actions are, I feel, a little unfair on those of us who spend time and effort, for free, to create entries that follow guidelines. I am not an admin, and I do not delete articles -- I only tag articles that may qualify for speedy deletion. At the time I tagged Gillian Tett, the article contained no assertion of the subject's notability, and therefore qualified for speedy deletion as a biographical article that did not assert notability. This issue has since been adequately addressed. And in return for your suggestion, I suggest that you acknowledge my spending time and effort, for free, to hunt down the zillions of articles created every day that do not follow policies and do not contribute to the mission. --A More Perfect Onion (talk) 15:15, 24 July 2009 (UTC)

My point, which I note you singularly fail to address, is that you acted in disregard of Wikipedia's policy and guidelines. As per them, I flagged the article "Hold on". First thing in the morning, (Swiss time, which is where I am), I went to make further additions to the page. Your actions were over zealous and did not allow time for the changes to be made. Your suggestions that I acknowledge your time is, frankly, completely irrelevant and slightly impertinent. On this occasion your judgement has let you down and damaged the credibility and value of the Wikipedia brand. And I repeat - it is very easy to destroy and criticize. My point is that I acted in complete consistency with Wikpedia's policy and guidelines. The deleting admin accepted your request and undeleted the article. As noted on the article's talk page, there is now no danger of the article being deleted. As such, my purpose is fulfilled -- the article now asserts notability and has verifiable citations to support the assertion.

My speedy delete tagging is accurate about 95% of the time. It's the other 5%, including this article, for which I have declined an offer to run for administrator.

If someone flags something with "Hang On" the policy is that they be allowed some reasonable time to make changes such as bring the article into line with policy. While flagging something for deletion may not be actually deleting it, given the experience you say you have you must know that a probable consequence of your act of flagging the article would be deletion. I am sure it was not your intention, but when you say that you did not delete the article, the admins did, the bigger picture does cast your argument in your own defence in the "I voss only obeying orders" type. As it happens, I am a professional editor and have been a great user of Wikipedia. My experience with trying to create an entry for Dr Tett, who on any reasonable evaluation of the facts is a person whose entry is more deserved in Wikipedia than many, makes me feel that perhaps it is best to avoid trying to contribute to Wikipedia. I have found the arguments deployed against her entry to be excessively small minded, bureaucratic and low-level; a great encyclopedia, such as the early editions of Britannica, display balance, judgement and an avoidance of over hasty and over zealous editing. Perhaps Wikipedia will one day mature into that tradition. I also detect a great bias towards statism and bureaucracy in Wikipedia. A minor and mediocre public servant is readily given an entry, often a most sycophantic one at that. Private citizens and managers in business, and entrepreneurs, on the other hand, seem to have to face far higher hurdles than the civil servants. I was just dropping by to suggest the same thing. In my view, speedy tags should be used very conservatively, except in very obvious cases. In the case of a {{db-person}} tag, perhaps you might consider doing a quick Ghits/Gnews/Gbooks search before tagging? Many times, someone that appears non-notable at first blush, is revealed to have some measure of notability with such a search. At the time I tagged the article as db-person, it was very short. My news search did not indicate Patrick Mara's notability at that time. I'm glad to see that the article was soon expanded so that notability was established. (As I said in another discussion last week, my accuracy rate with speedy delete tagging is at least 95%. I did check that reference, and decided that a victory in a primary election -- but not winning the seat in the general election -- probably didn't count as notable. Actually, I left a welcome message noting your conflict of interest with the company. The best way to validate to the Wikipedia community (of which I am one editor among many) is to provide reliable, independent sources for all content in the article about your company -- indeed, for all articles in the encyclopedia. I suggest reviewing the links I left in the welcome message (including the five pillars, which are the only standards that must be complied with); those links should help you get started.

One such ridiculous comment is that you wish to remove "Jewish POV" [3] from an article about the JEWISH New Year Holiday. No article, especially ones as complex dealing with Jewish holidays that are thousands of years old can have perfect syntax coming from multiple editors over time. But the errors in style are minor compared to more serious errors in that article that I took out, like the jokers who inserted that Rosh HaShanah is "just like Shabbat", which it is not, only if it occurs on a Shabbat as it will this year and there is therefore no Shofar blowing, but when Rosh HaShanah is on weekdays it is observed like a Mo'ed like the three other Moadim, the Shalosh regalim. I am not upset, I assure you, I just try to look at the important things that are wrong before picking points with minor ones that can easily be corrected grammatically in keeping with Wikipedia editing guidelines. Monckton changes

Hello -

So, being new to Wikipedia, I do not know who you are. Are you an administrator, or just someone who has a personal, possessive concern with regard to Mr. Monckton's bio? You seem to insist on using the term "scientific consensus", rather than opinion or theory. I changed it because currently it is not correct.

I am not a member of any political party... but I know the term "consensus" is a charged word that automatically discounts Monckton's opinion. Not only that, it is not accurate, as there IS no consensus, although there is a prevalence. There are hundreds of thousands of scientists that believe that global warming (now "climate change") is either the result of factors beyond man's control, or not even occurring at all. If the words "prevalent scientific theory" were used, THAT would be accurate.

Is it your goal that readers believe that not only is his opinion different than the mainstream, but that virtually ALL scientists agree, and hence he is just a crackpot? That is what you get without the change. Frankly, the bio is rife with that sort of thing.

In the discussion at hand, I checked that the information is consistent with the relevant Kentucky Derby by year article, and thought that notability could be established. Dear Perfect - my comment was accurate when I say that you know absolutely nothing about Thoroughbred racing. Your statement "Weak keep and refimprove-BLP, depending on whether a trainer of horses racing in the Kentucky Derby is notable" is utter nonsense. O'Neill is a leading American trainer. Wikipedia has articles on players in MLB, NFL, NBA without restriction because they may not have won an MVP or whatever, but because they played successfully at the highest level in their sport. Hence, Doug O'Neill fits that exact criteria used thousands of times at Wikipedia. Want more examples? There are countless thousands I can give. However, the reason I say you know zip about the subject is that your comment proved it: an entry in the Kentucky derby is a blip note but in fact you ignored that Doug O'Neill has won two Breeders' Cups World Championships. Such a serious lack of knowledge requires editors like you to not comment on such a subject. Second, your leader User:Onthegogo titled the AFD page as follows:

"Poorly referenced article of a non-notable living person should be removed per WP:BLP."

This is an improper and prejudicial assertion inserted as a statement of fact that shows this inexperienced editor, who, like you, knows nothing about the subject. With his personal opinion that Mr. O'Neill was a non-notable person, he shows he is someone who does not hesitate to violate NPOV, one of the most sacred of all Wikipedia policies. In fact, it is the job of the people voting to determine that, not for Onthegogo to attempt to prejudice the vote. And please note, this deliberate attempt to persuade voters was done after I advised him that his AFD assertion on the Douglas F. O'Neill article was completely wrong. What's worse in this case, is that Onthegogo in fact knows absolutely nothing about the subject. A further demononstration of this absurd lack of knowledge is that the alleged "poor references" included the NTRA profile. That in fact is the single most important reference in the sport. If either you or Onthegogo knew anything of the sport, you would know this. Worse, neither of you bothered to check, instead asserting and condoning POV in violation of Wikipedia policy. As such, people like you who know nothing about the sport, and apparently Wikipedia policy, come along and add a a futher statement about the Kentucky Derby that makes no sense and is irrelevant to the reason Mr. O'Neill's article was created. There are several hundred Thoroughbred trainers who have had Kentucky Derby runners who do not qualify for a Wikipedia article. It is mentioned only when they do.

If Onthegogo had questions about the validity of this article on which he has zero knowledge, then the respectful and proper thing is to post his/her question to those who do at Wikipedia:WikiProject Thoroughbred racing whose notice was at Talk:Douglas F. O'Neill, had he bothered to look. Onthegogo's conduct does not help Wikipedia. It does nothing but feed attention-seeking inexperienced contributors such as he and waste the time of those who make significant contributions here based on a demonstrated extensive knowledge and who have a proven and substantial record of doing that. My point is to put an end to this stuff. It happens all too often. I have seen articles deleted because a handful of "voters," operating in a vacuum over a short period of time, followed the leader on a subject they actually knew nothing about. It could have happened with Doug O'Neill. On another such issue awhile ago, one idiot even left a note on my Talk page about him "winning" the argument. Confusion on Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network

Apologies for newbie mistakes, trying to learn as fast as possible. Have been working on a factual historical entry that references the entry in question (Planned Lifetime Advocacy Network) and made the mistake of thinking it was in my user space when creating temporary entry. Was hoping to have article moved into my user space but is not necessary. Would prefer the current entry is deleted but unsure how this happens?

My Jewel Apple

I have no association with the My Jewel apple variety other than that I was given a stick of scion wood two years ago through the CRFG. Myself and a number of CRFG members grow this variety, and there is one farm, I believe Privedelli, that still grows this commercially. I have no association with Privedelli. It is currently growing in my orchard and therefore I have authority to talk about it and describe it. It is important that we do not loose these varieties by letting them fall into obscurity. By giving them visibility on Wickipedia, we can help to make sure they don't get lost as more people will be likely to grow them. My orchard is a backyard orchard where I collect and grow apple varieties for personal consumption only. I have no commercial interest in this variety. The wikipedia guidelines explicitly state that an item does not have to be famous in order to be mentioned in wikipedia. Just because few people grow a specific variety of apple does not make it not notable or make it a conflict of interest. It should not be about fame. With this sort of approach to notability, Wikipedia would just become a dribble about the lowest common denominator, and would no longer be a reliable source of information. Nor is it a conflict of interest. A conflict of interest is defined in Wikipedia as pertaining to commercial or publicity interests. I have none in this regards. Perhaps now I am only beginning to understand why Wikipedia is such a terrible source of information for apples if it's this difficult to submit any information on apple varieties to Wikipedia. You are quite right, fame is not the same as notable. You are also right on the COI issue - I went back and double checked the policy, and it is geared towards commercial interests. I will go slap myself with a trout.

Onion, I'm going to dissent slightly from your admonishment to Mr. Kirkpatrick to use a spell checker, as that can only do so much. My personal opinion is that his enthusiasm is not matched by ability and he needs a mentor, but I guess he has to want one first. The majority of the articles he has created are concerned with worthy subjects, I just wish they were being created by someone more careful. He has created roughly 60 articles (with one exception all of them to do with aircraft crashes) and I think about 10-15% have been deleted, including one article merge/redirect (concerning a light aircraft that crashed) that I performed. One article he created about an aircraft crash that would have been worthwhile was suspiciously good; it turned out to be nothing but a copy-and-paste from the aviation-safety website and was speedy-deleted. Other articles he has created have been deleted due to notability concerns. I am also puzzled by his referencing practices, whereby he references reasonably well in terrorism-related articles/lists that he works on, but tends not to reference at all, or does a very poor job of it, in other articles. I think that the spelling issue is to do with not knowing how to spell correctly (I came across one edit where he changed a correct "their" to "there") and to keyboard errors, for example this article I have just edited. My opinion now is that some sort of intervention is warranted. Mr. Kirkpatrick has not tried to address concerns with his spelling; if anything it is worse. He writes good content, so I wouldn't recommend coming down hard on him -- FSM knows there's worse. Still, I just cleaned up his latest few edits (turning web links into refs, fixing a date phrasing, nothing major). He needs coaching, preferably outside of WP. Featured article contest

This week, our first multilingual featured article contest was announced. We are aiming to improve the articles on the Declaration of Independence, Constitution, or Bill of Rights to featured or good status in English and other languages. Prizes for winners will be a gift package from the National Archives including a book of your choice or a tote bag, and other swag, plus, of course, a special barnstar.

August 6 backstage pass

Plans are in the works for a meetup and backstage pass event at the National Archives II facility in College Park, MD. There will be a regular social meetup, a discussion with Dominic about WP:NARA, a tour of the building by NARA staff, and then time for a scanathon and editathon in the research rooms and library until the building closes at 5 pm. Archival Recovery Team

The National Archives' Archival Recovery Team (ART) is a team of law enforcement agents and archivists who investigate NARA's lost and stolen documents. They have received media attention ([6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], [12], [13]) and would like to request an article be written for the team, if Wikipedians deem it notable. It is hoped that making more information about the group available on Wikipedia will increase public awareness of the documents they are seeking to recover.

The Today's Document challenge is an opportunity for Wikipedians to get their work related to National Archives holdings spotlighted on Archives.gov and the National Archives' tumblr. Each day the National Archives selects a document related to the day's date to showcase. The goal is to get articles related to the selected documents on the main page in ""Did You Know...?" the same day that the National Archives features the document. Alternatively, other appropriate articles related to National Archives holdings not already selected will be used for new documents of the day by NARA staff and posted to their tumblr.

WP:NARA has a sister WikiProject on Wikisource, WS:NARA. On Wikisource, editors transcribe, proofread, and arrange documents. This helps to make little-known documents more discoverable, or well-known documents more searchable, and improves accessibility. See the files being worked on. Major image contribution The National Archives has hundreds of thousands of digitized documents in its holdings. We are working on a bulk upload to Commons of one particular cache of about 123,000 TIFF master files in the next few days! Once uploaded, these will require a massive community effort to help categorize the files on Commons and add them to articles on Wikipedia or transcribe them on Wikisource.	Inclusion in the online catalog We are currently working on a system for including links to pages on Wikimedia projects in the National Archives online catalog. The Wikimedia projects are hosting an increasing number of transcriptions of National Archives documents and high-quality image and video files that are not available through NARA's own site. Links to these Wikimedia pages in the documents' actual catalog records will benefit the end user by providing them access to further resources about the documents, and they will also demonstrate the National Archives commitment to supporting Wikimedians' efforts.

National Archives ExtravaSCANza

You are invited to the National Archives ExtravaSCANza, taking place every day next week from January 4–7, Wednesday to Saturday, in College Park, Maryland (Washington, DC metro area). Come help me cap off my stint as Wikipedian in Residence at the National Archives with one last success!

This will be a casual working event in which Wikipedians are getting together to scan interesting documents at the National Archives related to a different theme each day—currently: spaceflight, women's suffrage, Chile, and battleships—for use on Wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons. The event is being held on multiple days, and in the evenings and weekend, so that as many locals and out-of-towners from nearby regions¹ as possible can come. Please join us!
