This page can be used to gauge support for potential wikiprojects before putting a lot of effort into creating a detailed project page.

Listing projects: Before listing here, write a brief description of your project on your user page. Then add your name and a link to your project to the list below.

Promoting projects: If your project gains support from 5-10 active Wikipedians, it could probably benefit from the organisation boost of having a proper page. Remove it from this list and follow the instructions for creating new projects.

Children and Youth issues

Description Would focus on the much needed overhaul of many pages relating to issues affecting children and youth. Currently, some specific topics such as Emancipation of minors and Convention on the Rights of the Child are well written by experts. Other such as Drinking age, Voting age and Age of majority are nothing but lists and need some attention given to the debates and issues surrounding them. Currently Children's rights redirects to Children's rights movement, I would suggest the title simply be 'Children's Rights' and a complete overhaul of the issue - same with Youth rights.

There are a range of articles which could be also included, Youth representation, Juvenile Delinquency (Which is currently the target of a redirect from Youth crime) Youth voice, Youth-led media etc. etc.

The focus would primarily be political & social issues.

WikiProject Iglesia ni Cristo

Description: This proposed WikiProject centers around Wikipedia articles about the religious organization known as Iglesia ni Cristo. We aim to create and maintain articles that are both well referenced and in a neutral point of view, keeping them at the level of quality Wikipedia intends all articles to be. The Wikiproject will also serve for centralized discussion and collaboration about such articles.

NPOV Backlog Taskforce

Description A group to work on the NPOV backlog (the group at WP:CLEAN seems to be inactive). In a majority of cases the dispute has been resolved, or is nonexistent, and the tag can be removed without much time and effort. Method: letter by letter, or by date. Also see Wikipedia:POV Cleanup. Currently 3.000 pages, plus another few hundred in Category:Articles which may be biased. Participants should know WP:NPOV, WP:VERIFY, etc.

Wikiproject International Relations

Wikipedia version of Phaidon Design Classics book set?

Description: a Wikipedia version of Phaidon's Design Classics Book set ISBN: 0 7148 4399 7 on Amazon.com . Its basically an illustrated list of objects-as far as I am aware you cant copyright a list (obviously the text and images etc of the book set are). I think it would make a great project/portal (I'm new here at Wikipedia- not too sure of the jargon!). The book set is beautiful but costs a heavy $175/€150. I dont actually mean to title the project Phaidon Design Classic but, the list of the objects from that book set would be the core of the project.

WikiProject Baltic States

Description: This project originates to back when Renata3 proposed a WP Lithuania on December 14, 2005. A more general project has been proposed; it will cover the small European countries of Lithuania, Estonia, and Latvia. DC Universe

Description: In this project, there would be encyclopedia-style information on various things throughout the DC comics for the last 60 to 70 years. Common Era Terminology

Question: is this really appropriate for a WikiProject? If it aims to co-ordinate the mass-conversion of pages to BC/BCE pages, shouldn't that be left for editors of the individual articles to come to consensus on? In fact, the MoS says that era format should only be converted from one form to another if there is a good reason (e.g. to make an article consistent by settling on one format). If it aims to be a "rallying point" for anti-BC/AD Wikipedians, then a WikiProject isn't really appropriate, a "user association" is better. It is utterly unacceptable to launch edit-wars about era notation - I am not greatly swayed either way by the substantive arguments about era notation, but there have been a series of horrendous edit wars by people who believe they are "in the right" (contrary to the MoS, which states both are acceptable) and if this keeps happening, we are going to lose good contributors to the wikistress it causes! To quote from Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)#Eras:

Both the BCE/CE era names and the BC/AD era names are acceptable, but be consistent within an article. Normally you should use plain numbers for years in the Anno Domini/Common Era, but when events span the start of the Anno Domini/Common Era, use AD or CE for the date at the end of the range (note that AD precedes the date and CE follows it). For example, [[1 BC]]–[[1|AD 1]] or [[1 BCE]]–[[1|1 CE]].

In articles about prehistory, if you use BP (before present) or MYA (million years ago), expand these abbreviations when you first use them, as most readers will be unfamiliar with them.

When either of two styles are acceptable it is inappropriate for a Wikipedia editor to change from one style to another unless there is some substantial reason for the change. For example, with respect to English spelling as opposed to American spelling it would be acceptable to change from American spelling to English spelling if the article concerned an English subject. Revert warring over optional styles is unacceptable; if the article is colour rather than color, it would be wrong to switch simply to change styles as both are acceptable. -- Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Jguk

It is what the abbreviations stand for that is the problem. By writing "25 AD", you are saying--in what is meant to be a neutral and unbiased article--"25th year of our Lord". Hurricane Katrina

Description: Hurricane Katrina created a bunch of pages this past fall -- a timeline, the locations affected, the failed levees and floodwalls, the myriad political/economic effects of the disaster, and so on. As the event is no longer so current, it's time to clean up the pages that were created quickly in immediate response. There's need for copyediting, sourcing, merging, and keeping an eye out for new information. I'm sure these things are already being done by many, but having a WikiProject couldn't hurt. Legal defence

Description: Wikipedia's prominence is coming to the fore and eventually it might be beneficial for Wikipedia to deal with its legal opponents in some way or other. WikiProject Legal defense recruits users who are willing to spend time and effort in participating in legal matters on the behalf of the Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation, as well as seeking lawyers and other legal experts to aid Wikipedia and Wikimedia on this increasingly important issue. Legal action is unpleasant, and should of course be avoided in the face of other alternatives, but at times Wikipedia must stamp its foot down and say, "Nope. That's it! We've had enough!" and bring legal action against entities which continually break laws to sabotage Wikipedia. This includes problematic vandals like WiC and WoW, where for example on WiC's talkpage, a legal draft against WiC has already been proposed. Wikipedia must eventually assert its own rights sooner or later - users who wish to dedicate their resources against Wikipedia's bullies. This is very much possible: For example, User:Encyclopedist has proposed a legal basis we could pursue Willy on Wheels on here.

Agenda:

Bring vandals to justice. Subpoenas should be issued to check long-time vandal's proxies' logs. They should contain entries of such vandal's real IP's, or in the very least, a trail of clues to follow, and eventually to justice.
Pre-emptive defense. Entities which threaten us and where the threat is very real, this project will find means and ways to countersue Wikipedia's legal opponents, such as libel and slander. This is primarily a preventive measure.
Enforcing trademarks. The trademark of Wikipedia and Wikimedia is currently being rampantly and wantonly infringed. http://Wikipediaclassaction.org, for instance, violates trademarks and a copyrighted image that is clearly not GFDL. If we do not defend our trademarks, Wikipedia and Wikimedia risks losing the ability to defend them, forever.
Dignity and principle. It must be demonstrated that Wikipedia cannot be legally bullied, or malicious actions made with no consequence. Incidents like at Brian Chase showed how easily consequences could pursue an unwitting individual; bringing legal action against Joshua Gardner using the full armory of legal charges, including defamation, misusing our resources to implement a fraud, misusing resources to commit a felony (as a sex offender), as well as continuing to perpetuate the fraud after it was repeatedly, is not only possible, but a way to show that Wikipedia will not stand for such actions.
Reclaiming damages. Wikipedia could gain funds in the process from legal pursuit of its bullies.

Clarifications:

This project will still stay within the realms of Wikipedia:No legal threats, and will firmly abide by it. Legal action will not be brought against any existing user, not even a vandal, unless the Wikimedia Foundation gives the green light to pursue. However, bringing action against other opponents on the behalf of Wikimedia, ranging from trademark infringement to maliicious offenders such as Gardner.

I think this is something you should discuss with the Foundation first. They already have a lawyer, they have funds (although no doubt not enough), and they may or may not want this. That said, I think you neglected to mention one important service Wikipedia users who are lawyers could provide. That service is protecting users (of whom admins are most likely to be sued). Let's imagine I blocked a disruptive user who then sued me in the US courts. I'm not American nor do I have the means to hire a lawyer. If a member of your Project was to handle my case - once s/he has satisfied him/herself I acted reasonably - and win, Wikipedia benefits (we don't want neutered admins, nor do we want users scared to be bold or enforce our policies for fear of litigation). --kingboyk 09:42, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Programming Language Design, Implementation and Theory

Description: Organizes and edits articles on the theory of programming languages, as well as technical issues related to their design and construction. Examples of likely topics would include:

Formal models and calculii (the Lambda Calculus, the process calculii, etc).
Compiler construction (parsing, lexing, semantic analysis, code generation, etc).
Type theory and type systems
Possibly, discussion of research programming languages
Related areas in mathematics, i.e. computability theory
Runtime design and implementation--topics such as garbage collection, virtual machines (in the context of programming languages), linkers and program loaders, etc.
Programming paradigms.
Other topics which are covered by the charter but which I haven't thought about.

There currently exists a Wikipedia:WikiProject Programming languages which is flagged as inactive, this existing project seems to focus on the following practical subjects:

Cataloguing articles about programming languages themselves, and about popular implementations thereof
Detailed topics on specific programming languages

In addition, many of the topics listed in the charter already have excellent articles on Wikipedia; this project wouldn't attempt any "hostile takeovers" on such (other than providing navboxes and the like).

Wikipedia:WikiProject Scotland

Description: I am beginning to think that Scottish Wikipedians' notice board is not the best vehicle for pushing up the quality of the Scotland article (we ought to try to get it to WP:FA, in order to get into Wikipedia:Version 0.5, or, failing that, Wikipedia:Version 1.0), and the other key Scottish articles. It is becoming increasingly obvious to me that we really ought to start up the long mooted WikiProject Scotland.

Most of the stuff at the notice board (at least on the bottom half) is actually WikiProject material anyway, and the Talk page is really being used as a WikiProject talk already! The notice board should be just that: for bunging up brief notices and signposts. I am thinking of launching a Wikiproject and correspondingly radically clearing out, and chopping down, the noticeboard (a re-launch if you like). The Scotland Portal concept is fine (but currently mediocre/undynamic content), but in stasis: it needs a good kick up the jacksie.

Alai I agree, the portal's doing double-duty at present, and while perhaps not urgently required, this seems sensible and useful.
Iolakana - Seeming as we have the portal and all, a WikiProject seems sensible.

Also this wikiproject would work on the pages relating to Spokane, Washington and connecting them with categories. If successful the project could and should expand to other things relating to Eastern Washington.

WikiProject: South Park

The basic idea is that all articles will be listed and grouped in a better style, more improved articles, deletion/lengthening of any stubs, completion of unfinished lists and all articles to be kept in good condition and cleanup for those needing it.
