Revision as of 11:45, 17 December 2016

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – IP-hopping vandal who persistently alters (against MOS:FULLNAME etc) subject's real name. Warnings no use because they keep changing their IP. Shearonink (talk) 17:43, 16 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question: @Shearonink: In their latest edit, they added new material relative to the previous ones, but you reverted "as before". Was the addition inaccurate? Samsara 19:34, 16 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
The problem is that they are adding the military title as if it is the person's name. For instance, the George Washington article doesn't delineate the subject in the lede sentence as General George Washington or President George Washington...he is delineated as "George Washington [birthdate] was a soldier and..." I am AGF'ing here, but they are apparently hopping from IP to IP, and there has been no response to any of the various notices or warnings left on their talkpages. If it is the same person, so far the recent IPs have all been in the 41.137.59.xx range: 41.137.59.72, 41.137.59.80, 41.137.59.69, & 41.137.59.64. (Other IPs in the 41.137.59.xx range - like 41.137.59.117 - have been doing similar edits to related Warner/Dandridge/Washington family articles...but that's a matter for another noticeboard.) Shearonink (talk) 03:19, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Geez, I've been looking at some other articles for research and have found that some biographical articles have the title in the lede sentence (John Dandridge, George S. Patton), but then some don't (like George Marshall, Robert E. Lee). It still doesn't seem correct according to Wikipedia rules to have the military rank incorporated into the subject's name in the lede sentence. Shearonink (talk) 03:39, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe you still haven't seen it, but in the latest edit they also added "was a Virginia planter, politician, and landowner", which you hard-reverted with an edit summary of "as before", even though it was not "as before". I fail to see how that particular change they made was bad. Samsara 08:34, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism – IP-hopping editor/vandal who persistently alters (against MOS:FULLNAME etc) subject's real name. Warnings no use because they keep changing their IP. Shearonink (talk) 17:56, 16 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question: Same question as above. Samsara 19:36, 16 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Syrian Civil War

Extended confirmed protection: High level of IP vandalism and spurious username edits, sensitive topic, article is in disarray with more and more new subsections exceeding recommended data limits. Slowing the stream of edits would likely be helpful. IronMaidenRocks (talk) 01:03, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Declined as proposed because of likely collateral damage. @IronMaidenRocks: If the size problem really cannot be handled any other way, I would suggest full protection for a short time (i.e. hours, not days) while you work on a draft copy to reduce size, with a subsequent histmerge. Samsara 08:59, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the edit rate, I'm really not convinced it's particularly high - no edits yesterday between 8:19 and 16:15 (8 hours), and no human edits since 4:07 last night until I looked today. If a larger group of established editors is needed to help with shortening and/or vandal watch, I'm sure it can be found. Samsara 10:34, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Template:Hindu philosophy

Temporary Semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing by a hopping IP 151.67.*.* over the last 10 days. The IP is trying to redo the template to make Buddhism/Jainism/etc appear as a part of Hinduism. Invitation to the user to read the extensive discussions and RfC on the page, as well to a direct request yesterday has been fruitless so far. Requesting a 2 or 4 week semi-protection, whatever makes sense in such cases. Ms Sarah Welch (talk) 02:03, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 3 weeks, after which the page will be automatically unprotected.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:34, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ymblanter. We conflicted on that. Changed it back. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 11:37, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]
CambridgeBayWeather, indefinite is even a better idea. I will configure it now.--Ymblanter (talk) 11:45, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia:VisualEditor/User guide

Pending changes: Widely-used guide, recent unnecessary IP tampering. Don't see need for IP to have instant access to edit (guide pretty much stands completed, that is, generally speaking). Pending changes could, perhaps, allow IPs to submit relevant changes if need be. JustBerry (talk) 02:47, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

    Nazi Lowriders

Indefinite semi-protection: Persistent addition of unsourced or poorly sourced content – This page keeps being changed by IP users who are not citing sources. Groups such as these often face vandalism from those who dislike them. bojo1498 talk 04:31, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Semi-protected for a period of 3 months, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Samsara 09:08, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

List of active Indian military aircraft

Unprotection: The one editor who engaged in constant addition of images doesn't seem to be ready to discuss the issue. I think full protection is not working here and a block is in line if this happens again. Regards. —UY Scuti Talk 07:49, 17 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Question:. Have you asked MilborneOne? They were the protecting admin. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.

    Handled requests

A rolling archive of the last seven days of protection requests can be found at Wikipedia:Requests for page protection/Rolling archive.
