The Gateway Pundit (TGP) is a conservative website founded by Jim Hoft after the United States presidential election in 2004.[2][3][4][5] According to Hoft, it was founded to "speak the truth" and to "expose the wickedness of the left."[6] The Gateway Pundit is supportive of President Donald Trump and is allied with elements of the alt-right in American politics.[7][8][9][10] The blog is often linked to or cited by Fox News, Drudge Report, Sarah Palin and other well-known conservative people and sites.[11] The website is known for publishing falsehoods and spreading hoaxes.[12]

Organization overview

The Gateway Pundit was founded in 2004 by Jim Hoft in St. Louis, Missouri.[13][14] During the course of the 2016 presidential campaign, over a million unique visitors a day visited The Gateway Pundit.[13]

White House press credentials

On February 13, 2017, founder Jim Hoft and The Gateway Pundit's Lucian Wintrich, a 28-year-old writer and artist, were granted White House press credentials. Hoft and Wintrich, the "freshly minted White House correspondent", attended the press conference with Trump and the Canadian prime minister, Justin Trudeau, as their first White House event. Wintrich has collaborated with Milo Yiannopoulos, a "strident" and "polarizing"[11] former editor at Breitbart News.[15]

As official correspondents, Hoft and Wintrich can now attend all press briefings and address their questions to whoever happens to be the White House press secretary at the time. In an interview, Wintrich described how they will "be reporting far more fairly than a lot of the very left-wing outlets that are currently occupying the briefing room. We will be doing a little trolling of the media in general here."[11] In addition, according to Wintrich, The Gateway Pundit's mission with respect to its White House access is “to help drain the press swamp” by covering the press corps’ “very leftist and biased reporting”[16] and to alleviate what he sees as a weight of bias amongst reporters in the White House press corp.[15]

Activities and recognition

On March 5, 2013, Jim Hoft was awarded the Reed Irvine Award for New Media by the Accuracy in Media watchdog at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC).[17][18] In March 2015, it was announced that Americans for Prosperity Foundation had selected The Gateway Pundit's Jim Hoft to receive the Breitbart Award for Excellence in Online Journalism.[19]

On March 4, 2017, Hoft spoke at the Spirit of America Rally in Nashville, TN and announced that he was starting an event, "The Real News Correspondents' Dinner", which would serve to compete with the White House Correspondents' Dinner.[20] The event occurred as planned on April 28, 2017.[21]

Controversy

One week after the 2016 presidential election, The Gateway Pundit published a post entitled "One Week After Election Loss Hillary Clinton Looks Like Death," stating that "[s]he looked like death… She’s either been on a bender, or crying her eyes out… or both."[22] A February 13, 2017 article in The New York Times cited to that post in describing The Gateway Pundit as a "provocative conservative blog" that promotes "false rumors about voter fraud and Hillary Clinton’s health."[11]

In October 2017, the Gateway Pundit published an article which falsely implicated an innocent individual as the shooter in the 2017 Las Vegas Strip shooting, a story that was also pushed by Google as a "top story."[23]
