Wikipedia:Requests for page protection

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by 110.137.190.132 (talk) at 02:15, 26 January 2021 (→‎Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Impeachment inquiry against Joe Biden: Re). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Welcome—request protection of a page, file, or template here.

Before requesting, read the protection policy. Full protection is used to stop edit warring between multiple users or to prevent vandalism to high-risk templates; semi-protection and pending changes are usually used to prevent IP and new user vandalism (see the rough guide to semi-protection); and move protection is used to stop pagemove revert wars. Extended confirmed protection is used where semi-protection has proved insufficient (see the rough guide to extended confirmed protection)

After a page has been protected, it is listed in the page history and logs with a short rationale, and the article is listed on Special:Protectedpages. In the case of full protection due to edit warring, admins should not revert to specific versions of the page, except to get rid of obvious vandalism.

Request protection of a page, or increasing the protection level

Request unprotection of a page, or reducing the protection level

Request a specific edit to a protected page
Please request an edit directly on the protected page's talk page before posting here

Current requests for increase in protection level

Place requests for new or upgrading pending changes, semi-protection, full protection, move protection, create protection, template editor protection, or upload protection at the BOTTOM of this section. Check the archive of fulfilled and denied requests or, failing that, the page history if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

Protection: As we are having a case of editwarring on Commons regarding some Somalia/Somaliland related files I suggest full protection for, say, 2 weeks. Cheers, Achim (talk) 18:34, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

DeclinedPages are not protected preemptively. FASTILY 23:06, 24 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pardon me, I should have asked you to have a look at the page history. Now we have the 5th revert. --Achim (talk) 09:01, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Not done I'm only counting 3 reverted edits (1, 2, 3). Also, I see there's an open ANI thread on this matter, so please propose your desired solution over there. Requests for page protection is not a forum for resolving complex content disputes or behavioral issues. -FASTILY 10:30, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Template protected for a period of 1 month, after which the page will be automatically unprotected.--Ymblanter (talk) 10:31, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I see that we have crossed. @Fastily:, you may undo my protection if you wish. My motivation was that templates are not a venue for edit-warring, and we clearly have one occurring there (although not yet high-intensity).--Ymblanter (talk) 10:33, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
No worries. I think it should stay unprotected because there are only two users involved (both can be blocked if necessary). I'll unprotect the page and warn both. -FASTILY 10:40, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Ymblanter User talk:Fastily Thanks for the help amigos. I was notified by the change when all the other maps were effected. Could you kindly check the talk page for further elaboration on the issue. This module page effected all the other pages I was working on and found out that a user changed the map file. I simply reverted the change and went back to the 2009 file. Once i reverted the change, i made a talk page and to discuss why the other users felt the need for the change but was given no response. I then notified the admins in the talk page about the issue. Thanks Hurbad (talk) 11:08, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite pending changes: Persistent vandalism – Multiple IP user violating BLP by changing surname from Shon to Son. [1][2][3][4]. Paper9oll (📣📝) 04:28, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paper9oll: It's not vandalism: see the comments from 2014 at the top of the talk page (there is confusion about Shon/Son). There should be a more recent explanation of why the changes are being reverted. Johnuniq (talk) 09:50, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnuniq: As per source provided in the article, you can see the image depicted her surname as Shon. In addition, the link provided in the talk page also listed her name as Shon. Furthermore, user Lonedirewolf didn't provide RS to support his claims on Son usage either. In fact, I'm not the only editor reverting it, other watcher that normally edits Korean-related article also reverted it. Paper9oll (📣📝) 10:04, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Good, but persuading me is not relevant. The point is that an explanation should be on article talk and passing editors should be encouraged (with a link in the edit summary of reverts) to see that explanation and discuss if wanted. Johnuniq (talk) 10:11, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnuniq: Erm okay, I forgot to also mentioned that the article have 3 RS (inclusive the talk page link and also 1 link of school website) supporting her surname. Also, it isn't really my fault for not directing IP user to the talk page (frankly speaking, only minority of IP user would bothered about going to talk page. If it's registered user, I can expect to be more interested) as other editor with more experience and higher edit count, didn't do as well. Looks talking so much, won't likely change your mind, so {{not done}} for request?
To be clear, I am hoping someone else will decide whether to protect the article or to decline the request. I just wanted to say that the talk shows genuine confusion (from 2014) and attempts to change the name should not be called vandalism. Johnuniq (talk) 23:42, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Move protection for drafts and creation protection for mainspace articles: Both subjects fail WP:NMOTORSPORT. Since I thought it was a case of WP:TOOSOON, I moved them back to draft (someone did it before me as well), but the creator keeps moving them to mainspace. ~Styyx Talk? ^-^ 11:51, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Creation protected for a period of 1 month, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. Applies to the mainspace articles. I made it one month, rather than indefinite, so that they can resubmit it in a reasonable time. MelanieN (talk) 20:07, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Note: User:Styyx, I have added the "Draft article" template to the drafts so that they can submit them through the article review process. That's something you should do when you draftify an article. You should also disable the categories; drafts are not supposed to have categories. You can disable them by adding a colon before the word category. MelanieN (talk) 20:07, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Indefinite extended confirmed protection: Persistent sockpuppetry. This has become a favorite of Wikipedia:Long-term abuse/MariaJaydHicky. (CC) Tbhotch 19:49, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

While this article has probably suffered enough for the time being, and I'm therefore elevating the protection, I would suggest taking a less personal approach to the LTA. Simply revert, report, and see the block happen. Samsara 20:41, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Extended confirmed protected indefinitely. Samsara 20:41, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    2021 Russian protests

Semi-protection: It's a current event that's receiving frequent IP vandalism. The article could use temporary semi-protection for a week or two. Grnrchst (talk) 22:26, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Grnrchst: Please find evidence that this article has received a high level of IP Vandalism, because it needs to justify semi-protection. Unless than that, this article cannot be protected preemptively. 110.137.190.132 (talk) 22:53, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Three IP edits have been reverted in the last hour due to disruptive editing and false information. There were also a reversion of an IP edit on 23 January due to Vandalism, 3 reversions of IP edits due to Vandalism and 2 reversions of IP edits due to unsourced information on 24 January and 2 further reversions of IP edits today on 25 January. Grnrchst (talk) 23:06, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Declined – Likely collateral damage as one or several users who are making improvements would be affected by the requested protection. It's close to needing protection but I'm not seeing it quite yet. Ask again if it gets worse. BTW it looked to me as if some of the problem edits were coming from auto-confirmed editors; if that keeps up you might need to request EC protection next time. MelanieN (talk) 00:46, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent vandalism. Every year on 26 January, this article receives high level of IP vandalism, see in many reversion on 25 January. Requesting temporary semi-protection only for 24 hours time, after that, pending changes will persisted. 110.137.190.132 (talk) 00:06, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Allies of World War II

Temporary full protection: Frequent edit warring by multiple editors linked to discussions on the talk page over the last week, as shown by the article history. A period of full protection would likely be helpful in encouraging a resolution of these discussions. Nick-D (talk) 00:25, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary semi-protection: Persistent disruptive editing – ongoing potential football transfer: typical IP disruptive editing. protect for just one week, until end of transfer window (which is sunday). Paul Vaurie (talk) 01:17, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Temporary full protection: Content dispute/edit warring – Let's get these editors to the talk page....looking at the history we have a month long editwar going on with no end in site. Moxy 🍁 01:41, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fully protected for a period of 1 week, after which the page will be automatically unprotected. --Deepfriedokra (talk) 01:45, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We have many logged out edits...but I just noriced an admin on talk so hopefully all will be solved soon.--Moxy 🍁 01:50, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The article has been protected twice already just this month. We're well beyond article protections; the serial edit warriors need to be blocked until they agree to stop edit warring. (An open SPI looks like it might take care of some of them in a different manner.) ElKevbo (talk) 01:56, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Semi-protection: Persistent sockpuppetry. Steve M (talk) 02:07, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think that extended confirmed protection would be better, given what's going on with the persistent sock/vandalism attack on this page. Nsk92 (talk) 02:09, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]
IMO, after the article is AFD-ed, it needs to be fully protected in order to prevent any user that repeatedly created the article per WP:CRYSTAL and WP:HOAX. This article about biden impeachment inquiry is more like hoax to me. 110.137.190.132 (talk) 02:15, 26 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for reduction in protection level

Before posting, first discuss with the protecting admin at their talk page. Post below only if you receive no reply.

    • To find out the username of the admin who protected the page click on "history" at the top of the page, then click on "View logs for this page" which is under the title of the page. The protecting admin is the username in blue before the words "protected", "changed protection level" or "pending changes". If there are a number of entries on the log page, you might find it easier to select "Protection log" or "Pending changes log" from the dropdown menu in the blue box.
    • Requests to downgrade full protection to template protection on templates and modules can be directed straight here; you do not need to ask the protecting admin first.
    • Requests for removing create protection on redlinked articles are generally assisted by having a draft version of the intended article prepared beforehand.
    • If you want to make spelling corrections or add uncontroversial information to a protected page please add {{Edit fully-protected}} to the article's talk page, along with an explanation of what you want to add to the page. If the talk page is protected please use the section below.

Check the archives if you cannot find your request. Only recently answered requests are still listed here.

    Brenda Biya

Reason: Biya has recently received international media coverage (see below) over her coming out. She already has an article on the French Wikipedia, which I have translated at Draft:Brenda Biya. Coverage:

    Talk:List of lighthouses in China

Unprotection: There is no edit warring or disruptive edits to the list under the article namespace. Neither are there disruptive edits to the talk page. Talking doesn't affect the article itself. 220.246.55.231 (talk) 13:51, 22 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Unprotection: Article was protected since 2017, protection will expire on 2022. No disruptive activity happens until December 2020. Sean Ethan James D. Querubin (talk) 02:58, 25 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Current requests for edits to a protected page

Ideally, requests should be made on the article talk page rather than here.

    • Unless the talk page itself is protected, you may instead add the appropriate template among {{Edit protected}}, {{Edit template-protected}}, {{Edit extended-protected}}, or {{Edit semi-protected}} to the article's talk page if you would like to make a change rather than requesting it here. Doing so will automatically place the page in the appropriate category for the request to be reviewed.
    • Where requests are made due to the editor having a conflict of interest (COI; see Wikipedia:Suggestions for COI compliance), the {{Edit COI}} template should be used.
    • Requests to move move-protected pages should be made at Wikipedia:Requested moves, not here.
    • If the discussion page and the article are both protected preventing you from making an edit request, this page is the right place to make that request. Please see the top of this page for instructions on how to post requests.
    • This page is not for continuing or starting discussions regarding content should both an article and its discussion page be protected. Please make a request only if you have a specific edit you wish to make.
