    Resizing image in infobox?

    I was trying to add an image to the infobox for the Quba Mosque, but the image is unreasonably large and offsets the formatting of the page-- does anyone know how I can resize it to a normal size?

    @Eggventura: I've edited the article and the image should be fixed now. When adding files to infoboxes, you don't need to use the wikicode [[File:]], as the template does that automatically, so you only need to type in the name of the file.     How do I unpatrol a page?

    Hello. I've accidentally marked Draft:Let's Go Brandon! as patrolled while fumbling around with my scroll bar. It's not immediately clear to me how I can undo my marking of the draft as patrolled, since the page curation script does not pop up on drafts for me.     How do bots automatically add content to articles?

    Hi! I often read articles about cities and towns around the world, and the vast majority of articles contain detailed, recent statistics about the place's demographics and climate. Here are a few examples of content I suspect is generated by bots:

    My hunch is that this content is added to articles by bots, and not human beings. Is this true? What are these types of editor bots called? Is there a community that maintains them? I'd like to contribute but need a place to start.

    The "Demographics" section you link to was created by User:Rambot in 2002. Rambot last edited in 2006 and is no longer being maintained. The "Climate" table of Cape Town was added by a human in 2006 , and gradually reformatted to match the current format. So, there's no bot that I'm aware of maintaining these anymore, only various humans each doing their part. * Pppery * it has begun... 03:49, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    WIKIPEDIA DELETED MY BOOKMARKS! WHAT DO I DO?

    Hello lovely people! I'm an avid wikipedia user, particularly on the mobile app on IOS. I love the app and used it regularly. However, just yesterday, I opened it for a late-night read, and lo and behold, everything is gone! And I mean everything; my saved pages, reading lists and history all disappeared. I've been using this for years avidly and a massive amount was lost overnight, an aggregate I doubt I'd be able to simply recover. So I'm writing to ask if there is anything I can do to recover what's been lost. One of the issues is I was using the app without an account, so I'm not sure if that makes a difference. Any ideas of what to do? Anyways, thanks for your consideration and patience and have a great day!

    The mobile apps for Wikipedia are ...not great... but bookmarks and so on are usually saved by your browser. That may be where the problem is. Beeblebrox (talk) 18:06, 21 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    If you register and use a Wikipedia account, the watchlist & contribution history are stored within Wikipedia and thus not dependent on a particular app to access it. --David Biddulph (talk) 08:14, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    The apps allow you to create reading lists that are synced to your account by the mw:Extension:Reading Lists. Unfortunately, OP, without an account the data is only stored locally. If it has disappeared, then you are probably out of luck. I think they should offer the option to store in iCloud or whatever the Google equivalent is (Drive?).     Arecibo message

    There does not seem to be any relevant posts or knowledge that prove any historical hoax revolving the Arecibo message. (In the case studies of crop circle investigations there is evidence of radiation and methods used that cannot be explained fully.) These instances cannot be replicated in any fashion by humans. There is a reason many crop circle investigations are ongoing. The incident involving the Arecibo message has yet to be explained by modern science and thus confirming the event to be a possible extraterrestrial response. In other words: It is impossible to be a hoax and the wiki page needs to be updated to meet scientific standards. People should see things for how they really are and not base findings as fact when they are not. If I am not allowed to do the edits myself and must complain to someone who can than so be it. Let the truth have it's day. Take for instance the real science that is taking place in these investigations. When you claim something is a hoax and have 0 proof that it is a hoax; then in my clinical opinion it is not a hoax. There seems to be more evidence that proves it's validity than the latter. I do appreciate the wiki and the public service it provides, but it's better to tell a truth than a lie. Please keep this standard as you continue to provide this service.

    Dear IP querant: for what it's worth, I live not far from Chilbolton, attend meetings for those interested in strange phenomena, and have met and talked to some of the people who made that crop image (and many others). Whether one considers it to be a hoax, performance art (as some regular crop-circle makers do), or something else, it's not aliens.

    change company name on page

    What template or action causes this?

    After taking along break from Wikipedia, I have forgot how to use a few tools and templates. I am currently trying to find out what tool or template causes something like :

    Malicious Commons: deletion request has removed current logo from infobox

    I received a notice from a user called Flalf that the coat of arms in the infobox at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Catholic_Archdiocese_of_Chicago is tagged for deletion, saying "Not own work as indicated, website logo ripped off archdiocese website. https://www.archchicago.org/ Flalf (talk) 02:53, 22 October 2021 (UTC)" This was not "ripped off" the archdiocese website. There are no SVG files on the archdiocese website. Wikipedia prompts me to respond at the entry, but the only way to do so is to edit the comment, so I added to it: "This is an .svg file which is the official coat of arms of the Archdiocese of Chicago, and needs to be restored to the page immediately." Meanwhile, someone (I presume this Flalf) removed the current coat of arms from the page and replaced it with one that is over 5 years old. This does not represent the Archdiocese of Chicago and is incorrect. The correct coat of arms file does exist but I cannot seem to restore it to the infobox.     According to [2], your account was registered at "2021-10-18 10:15". Which means you should become autoconfirmed soon after 10:15 UTC today (2 hours from now, though it doesn't always happen immediately to the minute when 4 days has elapsed).     Flow Chemistry

    Information about "Flow Chemistry" is like telling the world that Earth revolves and it is a new revelation.

    Every time a liquid is charged to a vessel whether it is used in a batch or continuous process it has to flow. So "Flow" is not a new revelation.

    For Batch process, liquids are charged to a reactor and stopped before the reaction is started. It is an intermittent flow of liquids i.e. stop and go. So it cannot be called "Flow Chemistry".

    For continuous processes liquids flow continuously 24x7x52 hours per year.

    These two definitions have existed since humans could think. Thus most of the information on "FLOW CHEMSITRY" Wikipedia is nothing new for chemists and chemical engineers.

    It seems whosoever has added subject matter needs to think. 2+2=4 will remain a fact.

    Not a single example of a commercial process that is being used is given.

    There are only Batch Processes or Continuous Processes and THERE ARE NO FLOW CHEMISTRY PROCESSES.

Wikipedia is not a publisher of new ideas, but a summariser of what has already been published: some of that will appear obvious to some readers. Having said that, I'm inclined to agree that the article does not establish that "flow chemistry" is (yet) a topic which meets Wikipedia's criteria for WP:notability - i.e. that "flow chemistry" has specifically been written about much. Next, to learn how to edit the encyclopedia articles here at Wikipedia, I suggest you review Help:Introduction and run through the game at Wikipedia:The Wikipedia Adventure. Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do at Wikipedia, so I suggest lots of experience editing existing articles first. Creating an article about yourself is strongly discouraged: see Wikipedia:Autobiography and Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing. If you want to create an article that meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability", then you can follow the instructions at Help:Your first article.     Is there a specific rule for the notability of species on English Wikipedia? Are all species considered notable, if so where is this written?

    If all species are considered notable what rules would apply in terms of the minimum length of the article and the number of references needed?

    How to remove hateful comments from talk page?

    To whom it may concern, A user who goes by 2600:8801:8109:A700:E074:93A7:C26F:3532 (or at least has that IP address) left the following comment on my talk page: "Your a misinformation pos" and commented (Lies) in the section to describe changes. Can something be done about that? Could the comment be removed from my talk page or you cannot revert it? I feel like it's a hurtful/hateful comment that shouldn't be there.     Hello! I am pretty sure I used to have a Wikipedia page and it has been deleted? For what reason would I have been got rid of do you think? I am not trying to be obnoxious, I am just trying to relaunch my career in my chosen field and it would help if I was able to have my page back with who I have worked for.     Hi there! If you tell us the name of the article (or draft or user page), we would be able to tell you if it existed and if it was deleted and why.     Just had a read on the discussion - lol. A bit harsh. I absolutely don't think I should have had a page for any tenuous links to the RF BUT in my defence I was the UK's top female motoring journalist for many years where i kicked ass in a male dominated sphere.(Vicky Butler Henderson was the Queen of the Screen I just wrote a lot but we were both really successful.)     And this nugget from that discussion is grossly unfair, untrue and unkind.     In addition, it's worth noting that Wikipedia has quite specific notability guidelines which might not exactly correspond to common understandings of notability. Not having an article about yourself does not mean that you are not notable in your field, and if you are relaunching your career I would suggest that it would be far more useful to have your own website where you can control all the content, rather than relying on a Wikipedia article.     How do I properly point a citation to a specific location in a book

    How do I cite a location in a book without page numbers that is in the style of an encyclopedia? The book in question is

    The book is structured like an encyclopedia with different entries under headings, but without page numbers. I don't think these entries are really "chapters". Does {{cite book}} have a parameter that can be used in such case, i.e., that I can use to point to one of the orange "headings" in the book?     Birth year template help

    Hi. I need help with the birth year template because it seems to be broken. I have been adding info boxes to some pages for certain people where only the month and year they were born in is known. For some reason the (birth year and age) template works fine but the {birth year) on it's own does not. For example if we use the date August 1980:

    If we do (birth year and age) it reads fine as follows: August 1980 (age 44)

    But if the person has died and we remove the "and age" section it just reads as this: 8 (1980)

    {{birth year}} is a redirect to {{birth-date}} which creates microformat data from the date specified in {{{1}}} (1980 in your example). When {{{2}}} does not exist, {{birth-date}} displays the value in {{{1}}}. The documentation is rather poor on this but when {{{2}}} is present and set, that is the value that the template displays; see Template:Birth-date § Parameters. So, in your example, {{{2}}} is set to 8 so that is what the template displays.
    Perhaps the template that you want is {{birth date}} (without the hyphen)?

    Read the template's documentation. You have to give it the whole date: {{birth date|1980|8|22}} → (1980-08-22)August 22, 1980
    Are you using the template to get the microformat metadata? Perhaps:
    {{Birth-date|August 1980}} → August 1980 (1980-08)
    August 1980<span style="display:none">&#160;(<span class="dtstart bday">1980-08</span>)</span>
    If not, why don't you just write out the date in plain text: August 1980?

    Ok it works if you use this one: {{Birth-date|August 1980}} → August 1980 (1980-08) Still not ideal though when it comes to keeping coding the same, the code is definitely bugged and flawed when it comes to this. You really should be able to format it this way with just the month and year of birth without needing to add "22" in the following example: {{birth date|1980|8|22}} → (1980-08-22)August 22, 1980
    It would be nice if this worked without having to add the exact date if it is not known: {{birth date|1980|8}} → (1980-08-{{{day}}})August Expression error: Unrecognized punctuation character "{"., 1980

    Typically like this: [[File:1846-47 John Brown by Augustus Washington (without frame).jpg|right|thumb|John Brown]], which is the code used to display the image at right. The four sections are 1) filename, 2) page location (left or right), 3) the keyword "thumb", and 4) the caption if any.

    Template:Indigenous rights footer is transcluded on a few biographic articles and was on the Bartolomé de las Casas, an important figure (social reformer, writer documenting atrocities against indigenous people). The editor removed it saying the "Template does not list anyone". My questions are: Is that a valid reason to remove this specific template from this bio? If yes, then template can updated to include people, right? If this template (labeled International Indigenous and minority rights) doesn't include people, can it still be added to a person's article? It may be reasonable to add those who have fought for those rights to the template, although that might expand it too much.     "[[]] Content" section in TOC_limit template? Visual editor doesn't seem to handle some templates right.

    I wanted to edit the last paragraph of the lede of https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Dementia&action=edit&oldid=1051254542 in the visual editor, but clicking on it highlighted the whole paragraph and led me to edit the TOC_limit template, where the whole paragraph was in a bogus-seeming "[[]] Content" section. When I examined the page in source editing, I saw that the template was simply placed at the end of the paragraph. Why on earth would the visual editor present the paragraph that way for editing?     @Hildeoc: Excessive rowspan for Ghana (was 11 for just nine rows), and missing cells in the reference row. I've fixed it. I've also removed invalid HTML5, irrelevant WP:BOLD, and the pointless dark-grey/white colour combination for the left-most two columns because they broke Wikipedia's accessibility directives (WP:COLOURCONTRAST); same for subheadings within tables. The article's a bit of a mess with split tables: it would be better to merge all into a single table, followed by any country-specific notes, narrative, or images. (I will do that if requested.)     Hello Help desk volunteers. I have websites in New Albion which I would like to archive. I have relied upon the generosity of another editor who has archived many websites in various articles I've written. However, this editor's health is such that I would like ease my requests of him/her. The editor tried to help me with archiving, but we discovered that he/she has a special tool that is no longer available.

    I look for directions on Wikipedia as to how to archive sources, but find none. So, where might I proceed from here.     I just tried it on a random article and I think it's working now. It can take a while to run, especially if the page is large and has many references.     @SharonPapierdreams: In the source editor, write the file name after |image= like the entries which do have images. If you don't know how to switch between VisualEditor and source editor then see Help:VisualEditor#Opening VisualEditor. The edit is harder to make with VisualEditor where it's difficult to locate the right image field. Can you give an example of an image which showed up automatically?     Hi Dost17! If you delete your cookies, your browser doesn't have the ability to remain logged in to any website (depending on what is deleted). There are many reasons to delete your browsing history (although, if you are trying to remove specific websites, maybe it is worth opening them in some sort of incognito mode regardless), but there is usually a button to press to remove deleting cookies, which is what would help with this.     On the Benno Schotz (my late father) site there appears a photograph of the sculptor Benno Elkan, standing in front of his sculptured Menorah.     Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong.     Anarchism articles by quality and importance - articles stuck in "NA"

    Hi, I have been working on assessing articles and have noticed that, even though articles have an "importance=" assigned to them, they are stuck in the "NA" category.     @Jamzze that's a third party site, so not sure how to invalidate the cache, but see Wikipedia:Purge for resetting caches on Wikipedia infrastructure. It's not super urgent in this case, and may be fixed on its own eventually (e.g. if it's using a daily data dump).     badly indexed entry?

    ScotKelly, this is normal, as page names are case sensitive (apart from the first letter) so Chastye islands does not exist, but Chastye Islands does. TSventon (talk) 13:41, 25 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
    @ScotKelly: Where are you making the search? The search box at top of every page should go directly to a page which only differs by capitalization. It works for me. The big search box at Special:Search works differently. It never goes directly to a page, and it says if the searched capitalization does not exist.     The criterion for adding entries to such lists is that they have standalone Wikipedia articles. (Some exceptions apply but none is really relevant here.)
    The criterion to have a standalone article is given at WP:NPRODUCT. Based on a quick online search and what you say, I am almost certain that there is nowhere enough significant coverage to demonstrate notability (the number of clients is irrelevant to the evaluation, but most companies that do have pages have more than "over 100 clients worldwide").
    Finally, Lvit2levi, I redacted your phone number, which you should not put on Wikipedia for multiple reasons (it is dangerous privacy-wise, and useless to making Wikipedia edits); and you should read and comply with our paid contributor terms of use.     Help titling my draft in sandbox

    I am not an autoconfirmed user as yet but I have made ten good faith edits to a wikipedia article, and 27 to the draft in my sandbox. I am unsure of how to title my draft. That is, I am unsure as to how I may make it so that, upon publishing, my article says "Dara" in the title and not "User:Manu9305/sandbox".

    Please advise.

    @Manu9305: Hi there! If your draft is accepted, the accepting editor will change the title for you. Since there is already an article called Dara about the given name, the accepting editor would pick a name unique to Wikipedia, and then add a link from Dara (disambiguation) to the new article.     How to or should I note legislative redistricting in an Infobox

    Hi, I'm currently editing an article about a historical politician in my state, more specifically, I am adding an infobox to the article along with more information. While I know his district thanks to state records, by the end of his term the state underwent a major change to it's legislative districts which I've failed to find any record of beyond it's existence. The change is such that the naming convention of districts itself changed, and I cannot find a record either of the legislative districts before or after this change.

    Because of this, while I can know this politician's predecessor, I cannot know their successor. I'm not entirely sure how to present this information, if at all. Is it acceptable to leave the successor entry blank if I cannot or do not know? Should I somehow make note of this redistricting, with a citation demonstrating that it occurred?

    Similarly, how are situations of redistricting handled even if the successor may be known?
