    chicxulub crater

Hello, I do not know if this will be added to the chicxulub crater page but in 1977 I was in my Geology class in high school and I hypothesized that a meteor hit the area now associated with Chicxulub crater. Needless to say, I was laughed out of class saying that if that was true then science would already have known that. What i am saying is that the first one to hypothesized that a meteor hit the peninsula was me. Now I do not have any proof of that because we did not have iphones or pagers or anything like that and I do not have any of my high school notes, nor do I remember my Geology teachers name but I was in Mesquite High School, 10th grade. Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rickp99 (talkcontribs) 01:25, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources say, so unless one documents your claim, sorry, it can't be on Wikipedia. 331dot (talk) 01:34, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Rickp99. Evidence of the presence of the impact crater, buried 20km deep under overlying sedimentary deposits, was supposedly first suspected by petroleum-industry geologists using advanced (and commercially secret) magnetic and gravitic survey data in 1978, and confirmatory evidence was only found in 1990. Apart from a then-obscure pattern of cenotes in the jungle of the Yucatan peninsula, I'm unaware of any previously-known surface details that might have suggested a crater there, or any other reason to think there had been an impact. Can you give us some details about what might have led a high-school student (presumably in Arizona or Texas) in 1977 to come to such a hypothesis? {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.208.90.66 (talk) 08:58, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Donation request.

I have donated and have an ongoing donation but I still get messages asking me to donate. Is there a problem with your software recognising this — Preceding unsigned comment added by 110.174.37.119 (talk) 04:34, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there! If you create an account, you will then have the option to turn off the fundraising banners. Without an account, the Wikipedia software can't associate your IP address with your donations. Hope this helps! GoingBatty (talk) 04:55, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Donation records are not tied to accounts; those records are held by the Foundation. As you use an IP address, the software has no way of knowing if the person sitting at the computer at any given moment has seen a donation request. 331dot (talk) 09:58, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

So I accidently submitted this in mainspace before it was ready. I moved it back to draft space to finish. Now it is waiting AFC review since its BLP. I'm not sure why people think this was a rejected article when the history trail shows my name as the one who moved it. Was I supposed to tag/untag something here?

@Tenryuu: It appears Imcdc addressed Robert McClenon at Draft:Makoto Soejima 55 minutes before posting here. Since "people" is plural, who are the other people? GoingBatty (talk) 20:39, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: I'm inclined to believe it is "people" in the general sense (that is, anyone) , so it might have been used prematurely. In any case, it's out of our hands. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 21:48, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

As you can see just a few threads above this one, if you create an account and log in, you can set a preference to turn off fundraising banners. Otherwise, as an anonymous visitor, the Wikimedia servers have no way of knowing whether you have donated. is it possible to delete a Wikipedia account that I own?

I am teaching a science enrichment class to 9th graders. We've been using Wikipedia to find details on various scientists. Some of the scientists' pages don't have a lot of information, so I thought it would be fun to teach the students how to edit them & add information that they've found elsewhere. (great chance to talk about how to cite & how not to plagiarize!)

It turns out that their school system has set things up such that no one using one of their IP addresses can set up a Wikipedia account. It's possible to edit if one already has an account set up, though. So what I'd like to do is set up an account for them to use while in class and then delete the account at the end of the semester, when class is over. I could just change the password & leave the account, but it seems like a waste of space. That's not a big deal, I guess, but now I'm curious about whether deletion is possible.

So, is there a way to delete an account that I have set up?

The obvious thing to do would be to have the students set up their accounts at home & then use them at school. That's problematic for a couple reasons, including the fact that some of the students don't have internet at home.

All ideas welcome, thanks! Margaret BioProfDrH (talk) 14:24, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User accounts are for single person use only, so I think your idea is a non starter and no accounts cannot be deleted. Theroadislong (talk) 14:49, 4 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

{U|BioProfDrH}} Do not worry about use of storage resources. Your whole endeavour is unlikely to use 100 MB, and a TB costs <$1000, so your burden on the system will cost < $0.10. Your sdudents' positive contributions will more then make up for this. From your own home, set up a separate account for each student. Provide the account to each separately and tell each to change the password. Make sure to tell them that Wikipedia logs all of their edits and that those logs are available to everybody, so they should not share passwords. Please have each student add a note on their account's talk page to link to your home page for the exersise, where you can explain what you did. This will let others know that the accounts are not a sock puppet farm that you created for nefarious purposes. The exersize will also get them used to editing on talk pages and linking. Have each student also make their own user page, for the same reason. These accounts will not be deleted, ever, so the students should be encouraged to continue to use them after the assignment is completed. Digital repairs to old damaged paintings - will Wikipedia use these?

Query: sometimes I digitally edit/repair uncopyrighted paintings from Wikipedia. Can Wikipedia re-use these repaired images? If so, how would I go about linking them to the original without causing confusion, or should they be submitted elsewhere? Please note that while I can do simple edits, I don't have experience in other areas on Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tzali (talkcontribs) 05:36, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Tzali, if you uploaded them, then you'd have to choose one option among: (a) waiving any right you might have to them (or denying that you had any right), (b) copylefting them under one or other of the licenses acceptable to Commons, (c) copyright or -lefting them in any other way. If (a) or (b), you should upload them to Commons (if anywhere). If (c), then not to Commons, and I can't imagine how they'd be useful to Wikipedia or accepted by it. When uploading your files to Commons, you'd link them to wherever you cared to within your descriptions of them. Now, can Wikipedia re-use them (if uploaded)? Hard to say without seeing one or more samples. If, in this thread, you linked to two or three as they appear on other websites, then people here could comment on their likely usefulness to Wikipedia. -- Hoary (talk) 07:40, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Tzali: legally, your works are "derived works" of the uncopyrighted material. This is the equivalent of doing copy editing of public domain text. To the extent your work is "creative" you own the copyright in those "creative" enhancements. To cover this case, claim the copyright and release it under a compatible license when you add it to Commons. That's good enough for us. If someone else wants to claim that your enhancements are not "creative" enough to be copyrighted, we don't care: we are covered, so your work can be stay on Commons. Use on Wikipedia: Sure, as long as you attribute your source. In this case, the attribution will exist on the image description page of your uploaded image, you will provide a link to the source image and perhaps a brief description of your improvements. Also: Thank you very much for your efforts. -Arch dude (talk) 15:50, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your prompt responses. I've just started doing some edits/repairs, but don't really have any suitable webpage to share samples, before seeking for approval to upload them. I create graphic designs for a digital magazine I publish and some online shops, so they won't be amateurish. Obviously there are some original paintings that are so badly damaged that I can't fix them, or so small they can't be worked on, so I won't be attempting to do anything with those. At the moment, I've just started doing Biblical paintings. I figured if I'm going to put in the effort, they might as well be shared for others to use, so I'll upload them to commons. I've no interest in copyrighting any of the updated images because I know how difficult useful images are to find or are too expensive for many people to buy. -- Tzali — Preceding unsigned comment added by 115.69.22.198 (talk) 10:37, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

BC171189, in order for a page to appear in a Google search, Google's bots - the software programs they use to find and index webpages - have to find and index the page (a process often called "crawling"). Apparently they haven't done so yet. There's nothing we can do on our end except make the page available for them to find. How long it will be until they find it, I don't know. I see you've already requested this on the article's talk page, Sofya2020, and nobody has replied - probably few people have looked at that talk page. How to solve a large scale dispute on an article which is going on for a decade?

There is a controversial article with a controversial title that needs changing, however, the talk page is all over the place with editors particularly who are suggesting a slew of different titles for the article making it impossible to address the original issue. This problem has allegedly been going on for a decade and still unsolved.

I had thought about starting a poll in the article's talkpage, and the least contentious name for the article would be used, but I am unsure following my reading on the topic here. Is this the right way to go about it or is that incorrect? If it is wrong, what should be done to correct the issue? MarioSuperstar77 (talk) 22:03, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Probably Mass killings under communist regimes.   Maproom (talk) 22:18, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MarioSuperstar77: I see a discussion is already under way. In an ideal world, editors would eventually reach a consensus to which would be the best title and request a move. But, considering the controversial topic, it's very likely that the discussion will lead to either a move request or a request for comment by an user and, hopefully, a consensus will be reached (which could always be to not change the title). Is it OK to create a redlink for a person who will never have an article, rather than have it unlinked and leave the reader guessing, e.g. [[Bob Hope (ski instructor)|Bob Hope]] as an extreme (and fictitious) example. Doug butler (talk) 22:19, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

No, that's against the explicit guidance at WP:Redlink. You can simply "disambiguate" in the article text. Wikignome Wintergreentalk 22:25, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
To reduce the risk of a future editor making a wrong link, you might add a source comment like Bob Hope<!-- Not the actor, don't link him -->. PrimeHunter (talk) 08:48, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    graph capabilities

Hi. There are a few things I'd like to be able to do with {{Graph:Chart}}, and was wondering if they were possible.

    1. Is it possible to have more than one Y axis? E.g., when evaluating whether a body might be a dwarf planet, astronomers look at albedo and density as well as size. So, it would be nice to be able to plot albedo and density against diameter in a single graph, so readers can see where high density and high albedo co-occur, and where they don't (e.g. Quaoar). It would be nice if, say, the density scale were the left Y axis, and the albedo scale the right Y axis.
    2. Is it possible to suppress colors in pie charts? E.g. at List_of_Solar_System_objects_by_size there is a series of pie charts comparing the masses of objects in the Solar system, but they're SVGs and can't be easily updated. In the first, only the Sun (yellow), Jupiter and Saturn are visible, so in the second, for the 8 planets, the yellow is omitted so that Jupiter and Saturn have the same colors. Then in the 3rd, of the terrestrial planets and larger moons and planetoids, the colors of the giant planets are also omitted. It would be nice to be able to replicate this consistency with Graph:Chart, where updating would be easier.

    kwami (talk) 23:15, 5 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Kwamikagami: After a quick glance at Template:Graph:Chart#Parameters, I do not believe #1 (twin Y axes) is feasible. For #2, you can probably do that by specifying the colors manually via the parameter colors.
While I appreciate the immense work that was put in by the creators and maintainers of {{Graph:Chart}}, I do not think it is any match for external tools (nor should it be). For anything that is a tad complex, I would recommend creating the charts with your graphics package of choice (for instance Python/matplotlib), and uploading the generating code to the Commons description page (so that others might easily recreate and/or modify the graph). Donations to Wikipedia

I deeply appreciate the work you all do. I am an author who uses your pages frequently. I donate $20 each year to try to help (I'm not a best-selling author :-) But every time I go to a page I'm hit with another request for a donation and now the notice appears to be counting how many times I "ignore" the fund-raising plea.

I do not want to seem ungrateful for what you all do, so I've been deleting windows to get in to search. Is there a way for me to fix this? I would hate to be locked out eventually.

Hello, Andrea. Thank you for your contributions. The Wikipedia software (which is separate from any system which knows about individual donations to the Wikimedia Foundation) has no way of knowing that the person on IP address 2600:6C67:147F:F1F8:E93A:8C9A:C5BF:4FD8 (which happened to be your address on this occasion, but might be different tomorrow, even if you are on the same device) has made a donation or not. Foreign titles

Is there an over-all policy on when articles should use original foreign titles of works of art (movies, books, plays, operas, short stories, etc.)? I sometimes have a hard time finding articles on foreign books and films because they are titled with the English version. I suppose the other way around would or does cause problems for people searching using the English versions. Kdammers (talk) 01:52, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

It's abbreviated WP:COMMONNAME. Basically, we are looking for the name by which the subject is commonly known in English. So if a work is commonly known by its German or Japanese title (like Mein Kampf), we'll use that; but otherwise, we use the English translation (like The Tale of Genji). --Orange Mike | Talk 02:39, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Naming conventions (use English) says: "The native spelling of a name should generally be included in parentheses, in the first line of the article, with a transliteration if the Anglicization isn't identical.". PrimeHunter (talk) 08:39, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Now, how can I tell how a work is generally known in English material? For example, I didn't know there was any-thing in English about the movie The Captain (2017 film), but it has a Wikipedia article under the English rather than the original, German title (which does not even have a re-direct). Is an Internet search legit for this? Kdammers (talk) 21:12, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The German title Der Hauptmann is a redirect. The original title is usually mentioned in Wikipedia so you can search for it here even if there is no redirect. Quotation marks may remove some irrelevant hits. An Internet search like Google also works. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:03, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I will add some helpful tips on your Talk Page in a few moments. Mike Turnbull (talk) 11:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Mysky2blue: Hi there! Creating a new article is one of the hardest things to do on Wikipedia, especially if you've never edited Wikipedia before. To learn how to edit, you could view Help:Introduction and The Wikipedia Adventure. I suggest then spending a significant amount of time editing existing articles to hone your skills. Once you're ready to create an article, you would gather independent reliable sources that have provided significant coverage of the subject, and determine whether it meets Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, called "notability". If so, you could follow the instructions at Help:Your first article, and be prepared for a process that may include months of waiting, rejections, and rewrites, before an article is created. Hope this helps, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 16:08, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Getting nowhere with a reasonable request to add something to a page that concerns land I own - how to resolve, or complain.

Good morning, I own Fenny Castle in Somerset (via a Community Interest Company with two other directors) and need to add to the existing Wikipedia Fenny Castle page/article that it is privately owned and any public access needs to be arranged via me. This is very important as there are several dead trees onsite which have the potential to injure people if they just wander on assuming it’s ok (plus a lability concern for us under the Occupies Liability Act duties). Yes we have private signs on the gate, but the Wikipedia page currently suggests it’s simply in the public domain and thus ‘open house’, which is dangerous and wrong. When I edited to add the necessary extra few words the alteration was it it was rejected. I re-edited it and then got a message that it had been rejected again because I have an interest - (something I didn’t know was even relevant as I’m new to all this). I then apologised but went on to explained why the extra info needed to be added, and that I was the owner - shortly after I was told that my request was going to be rejected because the editor couldn’t find secondary evidence that it was privately owned. This was odd as it has always been privately owned thus there is absolutely no evidence to suggest it is in the public domain……which the original page failed to address. When I provided an Email and phone number for the Historic England Officer who helped draft our agreed management plan that wasn’t accepted ……because ‘we don’t send Emails’. When I forwarded an extract from the Land Registry it received no further replies. How can I get the necessary changes made, or who can I speak with about a complaint? It really shouldn’t be this hard when I’m simply trying to protect the public and add a basic bit of info to something I actually own. Thank you Dr Simon Selby (redacted) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dr Simon Selby (talkcontribs) 10:49, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dr Simon Selby Do not post your email in this public forum, for your protection; Wikipedia matters are handled here on Wikipedia unless sensitive personal information is involved. Wikipedia has no central authority to direct a complaint to; issues with articles are discussed on the article talk page or using dispute resolution processes.
Your attempted edit sounded like an advertisement for your property, which is why it was removed. I don't see anything in the article that suggests (at least as I see it) that the property is wide open for public access. Quite frankly- and I apologize- Wikipedia is not here to help you regulate access to your property. If an independent reliable source(which does not include government documents or communications with government officials) discusses access to your property, that might be a way to get some sort of mention of the status of access to your property(but not a "call me for access"). 331dot (talk) 10:59, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@331dot: In addition, there is a phone number to be redacted from Dr Selby's talk page. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 11:02, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
We aren't a repository of information. If you have issues with people believing this is public land, that is not our issue. If there is something in the article that suggests that it is, then that would be different, but there isn't. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 11:36, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm. I see the difficulty, Dr Simon Selby. The article does not say that the site is open, but it can be read that way - I would think that a lot of people who see that it is a Scheduled Monument might assume that this meant it was freely open to the public (even though it actually means nothing of the sort). Our problem is that everything in Wikipedia is required to be supported by a published reference, because otherwise a reader has no way of telling whether it is accurate, or has been added mistakenly or maliciously. Has your project been covered in the local press perhaps? In this case, I would even be prepared to add something to the article about access based on your own website (you should not do that, because of COI, but I could) - but your own website says nothing at all about as far as I can see. --ColinFine (talk) 12:38, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Simon Selby: if you maintain an "official" web site for Fenny Castle as its owner, we can provide a link to that web site just as we do for any other corporate entity. Our article can then use statements of fact from you site in a limited way, like "privately owned" and "access required permission". If you choose to place contact information on your own web site, that's up to you. We do not place such information here on Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 17:43, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Help needed, please

The Wikipedia Volunteer Response Team suggested I try here for an answer. Might someone please tell me how to delete my two searches, by accident-- by some unknown means, at least a year ago, on Wikipedia? Here is what comes up every time I go to enter a search. And yes, I have tried FAQ and a host of possible links, etc. but to no avail. And I clear searches, caches, history on my browser almost daily. Two names pop up, Harold Frazer and Telus phone number, from two searches I would have made on Google not W. I cannot post a screenshot of this, W. won't let me. But when when I try to search for an article on W. these names appear as if they were choices and I cannot find a way to delete them. Please help me fix this glitch. @Ajallphin: I see you got a copy but let me mention two errors which may contribute to sandbox deletion. Wikipedia's license requires you to attribute the source if you copy content from another page. This includes your sandbox which is visible to everybody. See Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Second, you kept the code [[Category:Tomography]] at the end. This added your sandbox to Category:Tomography which is only for articles in the real encyclopedia. {{Draft categories}} is one way to avoid this. Yapperbot Query

I have mostly been satisfied with the requests that I get from User:Yapperbot to comment in Requests for Comment. I received one this afternoon which seems to be about an RFC that was already closed at the time that I received the feedback. That's a minor issue, but one that I wanted to mention to the bot operator. However, the bot operator appears to have been User:Naypta, and that user doesn't seem to have edited within the past year. On the one hand, the fact that the bot is running unattended with no major problems for more than a year is good. On the other hand, the fact that the bot is running without an operator is not so good, unless someone else is actually supervising the bot and hasn't officially taken it over. So, first, has someone taken over the bot, whose name doesn't appear as its operator? Second, if not, I have forgotten the answer that I was once given to this same question. How do I request that a human take over management of a bot whose previous human is not editing? Robert McClenon (talk) 17:49, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The issue with the specific RFC is very minor and can be ignored. The fact that a bot is running without a human is not causing a problem, but is a procedural problem. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:49, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: What happened here is that the RFC was closed yesterday [2]. Leechjoel9 reverted the closure of the RFC for some reason earlier today by performing a manual revert [3], before being reverted about an hour later by M.Bitton [4]. The reverting of the closure must have led the bot into thinking that an RFC was active on that page and needed some more input. The bot seems to be working fine here, the issue was the close being reverted out of process. The source code for yapperbot seems to be published under a GPL licence, so if it does break at some point in the future another operator should be able to take over maintenance of it. 192.76.8.80 (talk) 18:13, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I saw that the RFC had been closed early. So the bot may be working correctly and the editors working incorrectly. However, the fact that the code for the bot is available provides me with relatively little assurance. I was a maintenance programmer as a young man, and I know that some code is easily maintained and some code is difficult to understand. Having found that the bot has no maintenance programmer available, I would prefer that one be found when we don't need one, rather than in a panic when we do. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:47, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Robert McClenon: the bot noticeboard might be the best place to bring this up – that's where potential new maintainers are likely to hang out. ClaudineChionh (talkcontribs) 22:00, 6 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What's the policy on making people move to another site to edit things? (Wikidata is not clear/easy to use at all!) Turini2 (talk) 09:59, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Pppery there's no formal policy, but specific WikiProjects might discuss integrating Wikidata en mass, for example WP:BIO makes use of Wikidata in all of the Template:Infobox persons, while for another Infobox it might make less sense due to ease of editing/reliability of data etc.. I don't disagree that Wikidata can improve from UX interface improvements. It's multi language portability is a bigger asset to smaller language Wikipedias than English Wikipedia specifically. sfn and cites

Hi Folks!! Is there anyway to stop a block of text being conidered part of the reference system. The example is from Joseph Lister publications. I would like to put a cite for paper in this section, but I woud also like to reference to a specific page on that cite. I would have a copy of the cited paper in Bibliography section. That way folk could get access to papers if they want, and that specific sentence in Joseph Lister#Physiological experiments that i'm working on would get a reference with page number of the paper in bibliography section. Eventually that publication section will have its own article, as offline folks have stated there is enough for the experiments in one article but that is a couple of years away anyway. I could work around it, but that would leave an empty section there in the publications and I would have to introduce every paper in the article and I know the readers are already mentioning these papers in other areas, which came across by accident. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 10:33, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking: how to prevent {{sfn}} from linking to cs1|2 templates in Joseph Lister § Publications? If that is the question, then set |ref=none in each of the cs1|2 templates in that section. If that is not what you are asking, can you restate the question more succinctly?
As an aside, why is a work by Pasteur included in the list of Lister's publications?
    Trappist the monk (talk) 12:37, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: I think that is it. Regarding 2nd question. It was the one paper that kicked everthing off, but it needs moved some other section. Yip that is definently it. I wished I'd asked earlier, like five years ago. Thanks!! scope_creepTalk 15:33, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I do not use wikipedia much at all perhaps half a dozen times since 2008 but i did find the information on automobiles very good but unfortunately I'm a Canadian citizen 58 yrs of age and as my life went sour because of being half indigenous i was injured and the government will not give me identification or disability after being a victim of crime during a home invasion where i was shot twice with a twelve gauge shotgun point blank and there are many places i would like to help out you or peoples and i have no means to send money and lately i have been told that upon trying to cash my government basic income check that they have no money for people like myself while i watch others in the line ups at the money mart cheque cashing franchises have no problems getting their money . I filed human rights complaints but the government just says there are going to be many delays in the many processes in regards to my complaints . Soon this country is going to be brought to its knees along with the rest North America I promise you .Why you may ask? Because it has to be laid waste for the genocide and the living by the sword for too long ! It is ground zero here just wait and see it happen . Adding Vaz

I created this page about the band Vaz but I am unable to make the draft become a live page. How do I do this? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WillyWP67 (talkcontribs) 16:50, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, WillyWP67, please see WP:DRAFT for more information about the publishing process for new articles. As you are a new editor, you will have to request for the draft to be moved to the article mainspace for it to become a live page. You may wish to work on the article more and have it reviewed, however, as this generally helps with the quality of the article. I would also suggest that you take a look at WP:YFA for more information about how to get your first article started up. Tamptonato (talk) 17:46, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@WillyWP67: As it stands, the draft is not near to being ready for mainspace. In addition to WP:YFA you should also review the musical notability guidelines as well as the general notabilty guidelines and the manual of style, together with WP:REFB for guides to correctly adding citations. Also, WP:RS for what constitutes a reliable source. If the draft were to be submitted now it would be declined as it stands. It may be an idea to seek out articles on similar topics and look at how they are laid out and structured. Eagleash (talk) 17:59, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@WillyWP67: At first glance, your band is not notable by our definition. Before you do any more work on this article, I urge you to find references that support a claim of notability that will convince most reviewers. Otherwise your work will be wasted, because the article will not be accepted no matter how excellent it otherwise is. See WP:AMOUNT. -Arch dude (talk) 18:39, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@WillyWP67: In the early days of Wikipedia, new band pages were so commonly deleted that a humorous but brutal essay was written. See Wikipedia:No one cares about your garage band. -Arch dude (talk) 18:49, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@archdude @Theroadislong‬ How is Pitchfork, Discogs, Last FM, Free Music Archive, and All Music not references that support a claim of notability? These are all major players in independent music. — Preceding unsigned comment added by WillyWP67 (talkcontribs) 19:44, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@WillyWP67: Some of those sites run heavily on user-generated content, which makes it hard to abide by Wikipedia's verifiability policy. You can see the rationales behind considering sources like Discogs, AllMusic, and Last.fm being unreliable at perennial reliable sources list. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 20:05, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

    Miss Universe 2021

I added sourced content to the page and it was reverted by 2 different editors. I posted to the talk page of both editors as well as the talk page of the page - no response by either of them. Frustrated, I reverted, their reversion and one posted on my talk page that I was making disruptive edits. I've got no interest in fighting so I'm coming here looking for guidance. If the content is sourced, doesn't it have a place on the page? How can they remove it and that's fine but when I put it back, it's disruptive? MaskedSinger (talk) 19:19, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

The place to discuss this is the talk page; and, MaskedSinger, you were right to start a discussion there. Let's hope that Milesq and Jjj1238 respond there, so that you can have a real discussion. (I have no opinion on the inserted/deleted material. But I am surprised to realize that "Miss Universe" has continued into the 21st century.) -- Hoary (talk) 23:23, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks @Hoary:. It's very uncomfortable to be bullied. What if they don't respond? MaskedSinger (talk) 04:55, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Hoary: MaskedSinger has continued to add irrelevant, under-sourced content into a "Controversies" section that only he himself has contributed to, and which has been removed by both myself and Milesq as it is giving undue weight to a non-controversy about a girl who made an Instagram post. MaskedSinger left one message on my talk page about this, where he focused on making threats regarding administrator intervention rather than actual discussion on the topic, and left less than one day for either of us to respond on the article talk page (where we were not pinged) before re-adding his edit without consensus. I do not believe this adheres to BOLD, revert, discuss, and MaskedSinger should read up on maintaining civility with other editors and edit warring before making allegations of bullying. { [ ( jjj 1238 ) ] } 09:19, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@MaskedSinger: Just because something can be sourced doesn't mean that it automatically gets to go into an article, wikipedia articles should represent the mainstream consensus as represented by reliable sources, see policies like WP:Due weight, more specifically the WP:MINORASPECT section. When writing about living people you also need to be aware of the WP:BLP policies, which require you to use top quality sourcing. The statement you added to an article where you describe a living person as "a fraud" comes from Israellycool, which on it's about page describes itself as a blog run by an Israeli advocacy organisation - this almost certainly isn't a suitable source for contentious statements about a living person. If an edit you make is reverted it is your job to get consensus for it's inclusion through talk page discussion and/or the various WP:Dispute resolution processes. When you start a discussion about a contested edits you should ping or notify the involved editors so that they know that the discussion exists, and you should allow reasonable time for them to respond, you should be thinking in terms of days, not hours. Continuously reverting edits back into an article after they have been contested is called WP:edit warring and is viewed as disruptive behaviour that can lead to blocks. I also fail to see anything remotley approaching "bullying" here - you made an edit, someone disagreed with it and reverted, now you need to discuss and reach a consensus - this is a completely normal part of the editorial process and you should expect it to happen a lot if you edit here. Hope this helps, 192.76.8.80 (talk) 10:51, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@192.76.8.80: Thanks for your insight. Ok so maybe the language wasn't concise but that doesn't erase the fact that this thing happened and was covered by notable independent news outlets. If you want to add it to the page in a more appropriate way - by all means please do. What you say about the dispute process is nice if it happens but that's not what happened here - they reverted my edit, ignored the talk page and then accused me of disruptive behavior. It's not their page alone - they don't get to unilaterally decide what is or isn't on the page but that's what's happening here. MaskedSinger (talk) 17:21, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Anything you add to an article needs to be written in your own words. Removing a field in a template; impacts?

I am not a frequent editor of templates, in large part because prior to becoming an administrator I was locked out of editing most templates. I usually had to ask someone else to do it for me. Now having the privilege, but not the knowledge, I have a question. If I remove a field from a template and that field is in use on some of the articles where the template is in use, what impact will that have? Will the field display an error message or will it simply quietly suppress it? --Hammersoft (talk) 21:52, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Usually it will be quietly suppressed. Some templates have unknown parameter checking (look for something like #invoke:Check for unknown parameters|check near the bottom of the template), in which case removing a parameter result in a warning when you preview an article still using the parameter). I can't go into more detail about what exactly will happen without knowing which parameter(s) are being removed from which template(s). * Pppery * it has begun... 22:13, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Pppery, thanks for the response. I'm looking at Template:Infobox school district. A 2018 RFC deprecated the the use of subordinate administrators in school districts, such as deputy/assistant superintendents. In the template, there is a field for "deputy_superintendent" which I am considering removing. But, again, I don't want to remove it without understanding the impacts before doing so. --Hammersoft (talk) 22:50, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's a separate |asst_superintendent= parameter. Do you want to remove that as well? The technical details of removing both parameters would be: remove
    |label13 = {{#if:{{{deputy_superintendent|}}}{{{deputy_superintendents|}}}|Deputy|{{abbr|Asst.|Assistant}}}} superintendent(s)
    |data13   = {{if empty|{{{deputy_superintendent|}}}|{{{deputy_superintendents|}}}|{{{asst_superintendent|}}}|{{{asst_superintendents|}}}}}

and remove | asst_superintendent | asst_superintendents and deputy_superintendent | deputy_superintendents. This template does use unknown parameter checking, so the result is that all articles currently displaying a Deputy or Asst. superintendent field would no longer display it, would be placed in Category:Pages using infobox school district with unsupported parameters, and a warning (pointing out the now-unsupported parameters) would appear when you previewed an edit to such a page. * Pppery * it has begun... 23:01, 7 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a {{PoIgb}} and matching {{GeoGroup}} to Embsay and Bolton Abbey Steam Railway § The route of the EBASR. In order to make it work properly (to stop the map appearing with no coordinates) I had to remove the ampersand (&) from the section heading, which was originally "The route of the E&BASR". This is obviously a rather clumsy work-around; I assume there is some way of expressing the section name (including the ampersand) as a parameter of GeoGroup. Can someone better versed than I in wiki markup and template parameters please tell me how I should do it in order to leave the ampersand in place?--Verbarson (talk)

    Question about grammar in articles

Note that Wikipedia uses formal written English per MOS. I frequently copy-edit music and similar pop culture articles where the first sentence omits the expected verbs, pronouns or both. I almost always replace these. For example, I'm currently copy-editing Speak Now, where the first sentence read; "Speak Now is the third studio album by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift, released on October 25, 2010, through Big Machine Records.". I added verbs and pronouns, and divided it into two sentences here. The change was reverted here and I re-reverted them here with an explanation in the summary.

Let me explain: "by" suggest someone or something performed an action but the sentence omits the action that was performed: the album was recorded, it didn't appear out of thin air. The verb phrase "that was" is also needed to link "released" with the album and its creator, otherwise "released..." dangles.

I wouldn't write; " Wet and Sticky is the third cake by Fred, sold on Monday.". If I'd have written like that at school, I'd have been wearing the Dunce's hat and writing 50 lines. And don't get me started on the dangling participle in the second sentence...

I know this is pedantic but I consider it to be an issue about standards. The opening sentences give readers an overall impression of the article. I don't wish to edit-war with anyone but I'd love to know why this omission of verbs and pronouns is considered acceptable in Wikipedia articles, even in Featured Articles that appear on the main page. I don't, however, wish it to be prescribed that "verbs and pronouns must not be omitted". Maybe we need an RfC... Cheers, Baffle☿gab 03:57, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree with your change. wiktionary:by#Preposition says:
    5. Indicates the creator of a work: Existing through the authorship etc. of.
There are many well-known plays by William Shakespeare
This is a completely normal use of "by" understood by everybody. Albums are recorded, plays are written, paintings are painted, etc. It sounds stilted to me to add such words, and makes me wonder whether it adds meaning beyond the normal "by". Consider your "Speak Now is the third studio album to be recorded by American singer-songwriter Taylor Swift". Does that mean it's planned but not done yet? (The next sentence reveals no). Does it mean she made other albums she didn't record, whatever that means, e.g. writing but not performing the music? And when you broke the sentence you wrote lowercase "it" after a period. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:36, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't write; " Wet and Sticky is the third cake by Fred, sold on Monday.". If I'd have written like that at school, I'd have been wearing the Dunce's hat and writing 50 lines. I wouldn't write that: its punctuation is alien to me. That minor matter aside: There have been a vast number of courses in English, composition, etc, to pupils speaking English as a first language. A substantial percentage of them have been taught by bossy teachers with bizarre notions of English style. If you'd have been wearing the dunce's hat, perhaps it was not you but the teacher who was the dunce. -- Hoary (talk) 06:02, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Baffle. It's probably better to ask this on one of the Manual of Style's talk pages. Changing author of article

    Draft:Kewsong Lee

Hi. I'm currently working on getting this article approved. However I noticed the article is attributed to Irishmarxman. Considering that I pretty much had to redo it from start, I don't think its really fair to give credit of the article to that user. Is there a way to change who created the article? Or do I have to delete it and start again? -Imcdc (talk) 05:58, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Aside from a humdrum message on a user talk page, how would either Irishmarxman or you be given credit for its creation? It was created by its creator. And unless you're an administrator, you can't delete it. Even if you are an administrator, "Transfer of credit for creation" is not a valid reason for deletion. -- Hoary (talk) 06:07, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

That's true, Imcdc, but does anyone care about such things? If anyone does, then they'll see that although Morris Bishop wasn't created by me, I contributed the most verbiage to it. (But this isn't necessarily praiseworthy: the verbiage might have been waffle, or spam.) An article's history will show what really happened. -- Hoary (talk) 06:44, 8 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]
