Gujar Khan (Urdu: گوجرخان ) is a city located in Rawalpindi District, Punjab, Pakistan. It is the headquarters of Gujar Khan Tehsil, one of the seven tehsils or subdivisions of Rawalpindi District.[1] It is approximately 55 kilometres southeast of Islamabad, the capital of Pakistan and 220 km to the north west of Lahore capital of Punjab. Gujar Khan is bounded with south side by Rawalpindi, Islamabad and Attock, north side by Jhelum, Lahore and Gujrat, East side by Kashmir and Kahuta and west side by Chakwal and Khushab. The city has a population of approximately 73,000.[2] Gujar Khan lies at the heart of the Pothohar cultural region. The area has considerable natural resources in the form of petroleum and natural gas.


Transport

Gujar Khan is situated on the Islamabad-Lahore National Highway. Travel within Gujar Khan is diverse from auto-rickshaws and tanga.

Gujar Khan railway station on the main line of Pakistan Railways. Trains operate to Karachi, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta and Rawalpindi.

Islamabad International Airport is about 45 kilometres from Gujar Khan.

Gujar Khan, as well as being tehsil capital, is administratively subdivided into 3 Union Councils:[4]

According to the 1998 census of Pakistan, the city (Gujar Khan Urban - which includes the 3 Unions) had a population of 57,099.[5]

Natural resources

Large reserves of oil and gas were discovered in February 2002 at Tobra, about ten kilometres from Gujar Khan. The field is being developed by the Oil and Gas Development Company. The field could produce 1,600 barrels of crude oil daily.[6] There are two place at Gujar Khan from where Oil and Gas reserves have been discovered. The Ahdi Oil and Gas field is about 30 km from Gujar Khan City, situated near Daultala town Pakistan Petroleum Limited. (PPL)is producing oil and gas from this field. According to Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL), huge oil and gas reserves have been discovered at Missa oil and gas field, ten kilometres from Gujar Khan. The sources said that the drilling at Well No 3 of the Missa Kaswal oil and gas field at Tobra led to the discovery. The field could produce 1,600 barrels of crude daily.

Gujar Khan is 2 kilometres from the Dohngi Dam and about 35 kilometres from the much larger Mangla Dam.

There is an old abandoned Hindu temple in village Dera Bakhshian. Main shopping places are Main Bazaar, Halwai Gali, Railway Road, Sabzi Mandi (Vegitables & Fruit market).

Pothowari is the main language of Gujar Khan, other languages are Urdu, Punjabi and Pashto.

The PTCL provides the main network of landline telephone. Many ISPs and all major mobile phone companies operating in Pakistan provide service in Gujar Khan.
