KT (formerly Korea Telecom, Korean: 한국통신, NYSEKTC) is a prominent South Korean integrated wired/wireless telecommunication service provider. KT has an information & communications business, and has the largest portion of the South Korean local telephone and high-speed Internet business. Among its products is the wireless broadband service WiBro. KT successfully merged with KTF, a mobile telecommunications company in mid-2009.

KT offers a range of products and services for domestic customers, including telephone service, broadband Internet service, internet access, LM service, wireless service and data service.

Merger with KTF

In mid-2009, KT and KTF merged to form one company under the KT brand. KTF, now KT, is a South Korean mobile telecommunications firm with extensive overseas operations. The company, before the merger with KT, had 12 million subscribers in South Korea. Today that figure is 13.7m subs. The company is credited with developing customised ring back tones.

In 2003, KTF received an order from PT Mobile-8 Telecom of Indonesia for a comprehensive consulting service. KTF also signed a contract for the export of its CDMA network management system and invested US$10 million in the Indonesian mobile provider.

In India, the firm completed the first stage of its contract with Reliance for US$2.65 million worth of the CDMA network construction.

KTF, now KT, also holds a 25% stake in CEC Mobile of China, after investing a sum of 4.5 billion won in 2002. The two major shareholders of KTF are KT (52.99%) and NTT DoCoMo (10.03%). KTF, now KT, sponsors a professional StarCraft team.

On August 20, 1885, The Hansung Telegraphy Ministry was established as the first Telecom Authority in Korea, and on December 10, 1981, Korea Telecom Authority was founded.
