Other neat portal ideas for longer term

  • Longer term ideas to think about from other portals:
  1. Events section, like: "On this day" e.g., Biography, Religion, United States; "Selected anniversaries" e.g., War; "Calendar" at Holidays. Interesting idea of "Month selected anniversaries", at Oregon.
  2. Model intro with some rotating images, after Portal:Oregon, Portal:Indiana, Portal:Iceland/Intro and Portal:Philosophy of science/Intro.
  3. Revamp DYK sections w/ free-use images, model after Portal:Criminal justice and Portal:Oregon.
  4. Portal palettes at User:RichardF/Palettes/Portals. Comparable color schemes can be developed from the various hue lists at User:RichardF/Palettes. Also see Portal:Box-header.
  5. If there are a lot of categories, then categories section to 2 columns, like in Portal:Indiana.
Also take some time to check out style/formatting at Portal:Indiana Cirt (talk)

Dispatch

Cirt, Awadewit suggested that you might be interested in writing a Signpost Dispatch article on Featured portals (the only area of featured content we haven't covered). Sample previous articles are at {{FCDW}}. We've covered:

None of them start out looking like that: if an editor initially just chunks in some text, many others chip in to tweak it up to Signpost standards. For example, someone wrote this, which Karanacs, Royalbroil and I turned into this, so if you just chunk in some text as a start, others can help finish it off. Another example, I put in this outline, and Karanacs brought it up to this. Other editors have written almost complete and clean Dispatches without much need for other editing. If you're interested, please weigh in and coordinate at WT:FCDW In case you're interested, you could just begin sandboxing something at WP:FCDW/Portals and pop over to WT:FCDW to leave a note when you're ready for others to help out. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:26, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Will mull this over and most likely draft something up. Cirt (talk) 11:54, 18 November 2108 (UTC)[reply]

Hi - thanks for your note, but I'm not sure what better link or reference can be provided. The point is that the episode is not listed at all on the UK site, so providing a link to the site verifies this. Would it help to add a direct link to the episode guide instead? 81.142.107.230 (talk) 10:23, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion review for Kateryna Kozlova

An editor has asked for a deletion review of Kateryna Kozlova. Because you closed the deletion discussion for this page, speedily deleted it, or otherwise were interested in the page, you might want to participate in the deletion review.

Sorry, should have contacted you first before starting the review. Now in the process of withdrawing. Hope that you can change the result to No Consensus or Keep given that there is only one delete vote on the Afd with no further comment. Kateryna also passes WP:TENNIS/N since she has won a title in an ITF $25,000 tournament. Arteyu ? Blame it on me ! 13:24, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Darryl Dobbs - removed

His website DobberHockey.com provides any bio info needed. Your research actually dug up articles that I was unaware of. But he primarily can be found outside of his own website at TheHockeyNews.com, Yahoo! Puck Daddy and others. His Twitter account @DobberHockey has 1700 followers (small potatoes, but still in the top 85,000), and his website has 35,000 members. I just can't help but think that this is another slight against hockey by Americans. Perhaps I should re-submit under his handle "Dobber"? That is what he is more widely known as (and would probably turn up more hits for you if you did a search of "dobber" and "hockey"). Let me know if that has a better chance of success, I appreciate your help. Sorry for forgetting to sign last time, I am new to this process. Eksfactor (talk) 00:10, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to request a second review of this deletion by someone higher up in the Wiki chain. The bio provided a dozen references, as well as independent write-ups on this blogger. He has a Fantasy Hockey Guide that 10,000 people buy every year. His work is read on dozens of websites and is absolutely a worthy person to profile on Wikipedia. I feel that this removal was the victim of an American bias against hockey and hockey personalities and I would like this deletion and the persons responsible for it to undergo a full review. Hockey may be small-time in your world, but there is a big market out there, particularly up in Canada, where the sport and its personalities are respected. Please advise. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Eksfactor (talkcontribs) 18:38, 16 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hmmmm...he's probably just not notable enough for an entry. I did my own quick research of reliable sources and I found 3 articles written by him[1][2][3] and 2 articles with brief mentions of him.[4][5] I'm not sure how you could construct a biography from that. Portland Parks Photo Blitz!

<font=3> Want something to do this weekend? I propose a WikiProject Oregon weekend photo blitz! Let's try to fill up the List of parks in Portland, Oregon as much as possible by getting out and taking our own pictures or finding ones online that can be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The pictures uploaded will not only benefit the aforementioned list, but they will be used for future articles about specific parks and will fill up the Parks in Portland category over at Commons. Get your cameras ready!

Blocked IP socking to evade, see ANI

Hi, Cirt! Thanks for this block of IP 138.162.8.57 (talk) for vandalism. I thought I should let you know that he appears to be socking to evade that block, vote-stack an AfD, vandalize, and just continue to be a pain. Since you didn't seem (from your contributions history?) to be online just now, and because I was hoping for a quick response, I started a thread at ANI about this. Just thought it'd be courteous to let you know. Btw, I sincerely appreciate your work to keep the barbarians at bay, very much. Thanks again,  – OhioStandard (talk) 01:59, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. -- Cirt (talk) 03:43, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This static IP from Herndon, Virginia,[6] got blocked for one month on 27 March 2020 for adding non-existant cast and crew to numerous articles. When the block ended, the IP began doing it again and you yourself gave it a 3-month block. And when THAT block ended last July, the IP went immediately back to the same exact patern of vandalism,[7] and has already received two new "only warnings" without stopping. I've gone through and cleaned up all I could find... but might you consider a slightly stiffer block this time around? Maybe the IP will get bored and stop.... though it does seem as if the IP has absolutely no interest in stopping the vandalism. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 03:25, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

 Done. -- Cirt (talk) 03:44, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Sure hope the IP finally understands that Wikipedia is not the place to expand such an elaborate set of hoaxes. We'll know in 6 months. Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 22:53, 21 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Featured Portal Question

Before I nominate it, do you think Portal:Cape Cod and the Islands is up to code or do I have more to work on with it? Thanks. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 00:50, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Does need a bit of work. Try a portal peer review, and then post notices about it to lots of relevant wikiproject talk pages. -- Cirt (talk) 00:57, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Do you have any suggetions about if from what you might have noticed before I dive into the review? Kevin Rutherford (talk) 01:06, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Some quick suggestions from a talk-page stalker (and I fixed a couple of bugs myself, as you may have spotted): (a) to get FPo status, you'll need many more than one article, one DYK set, two pictures, two quotations (and how does JFK's inaugural address get to be one of the quotations? Because JFK was from MA? That makes it a very loose link indeed - can you do better?); (b) anything that happened in 2005 is no longer news... suggest you revamp this section, not relying solely on Wikinews (which is a dying project), but maybe using Wikinews importer bot anyway; (c) the display of the categories section is messed up for me (using Firefox), and the "<categorytree>" word (producing the effects below) is a handy trick. (d) There's a lot of empty space under the "categories" box at the moment, so perhaps reorder the sections? (e) Selected biography, or perhaps use the biographies as "selected articles" if you're short? (f) Consider using User:JL-Bot/Project content to generate the "quality content" box, as it's then automatic (provided the articles have the project tag...). Hope this helps. Good luck! "Nuremberg trials-sons of haman" deletion

I request you to reconsider the deletion of the article "===Nuremberg Trials-Sons of Haman Coincidence?===". 1. As for the claims of OR: All the factual claims in the article are fully referenced by reliable secondary sources. All the rest is described clearly as wild speculation originating in religious circles. 2. I keep a Neutral POV: There is a crictical section with several references to critical sites. It explicitly describes the theory as a controversial speculation and it explicitly mentions that it is an aposteriori observation that cannot be statistically "proved" in any reliable way. 3. As for notability- I wish to point that other claims of coincidence/precognition etc. are mentioned in wikipedia and some even got their own article in wikipedia, see e.g. Lincoln-Kennedy coincidences urban legend, Bible Code, Futility, or the Wreck of the Titan. Also see R v Dudley and Stephens#Cultural Impact. Also, on the web you can find dozens, of sites discussing this issue. Do a Google Search on "purim fest 1946", or "haman's sons" and Nuremberg or "small letters" and esther. A google book search yields at least 10 books mentioning this as well. In (orthodox) Jewish circles it is well known and I may add that it also enjoys some popularity in those circles. I think there are many more believers in this theory than for example there are members in the Flat Earth Society. So if the latter fringe theory has a wikipedia entry why shouldn't the former? If you still think it isn't notable enough to deserve its own article, then may I suggest as a compromise to add it as a section inside another article. The article about the Bible Code controversy seems most appropriate, especially since the originator of both ideas seems to be the same person (Rabbi Weissmandl).--Ok412 (talk) 19:13, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

"Is this noteworthy of inclusion?"

Hi Cirt, I hope this reaches you in good time. This is regarding my recent addition to the "Reported Abuse" section of the David Miscavige page. I added a direct quote from D.M. from a Tampabay.org article entitled "David Miscavige Bio." I can confidently say this addition is noteworthy of inclusion - it emanates from a source that has been quoted by editors of the page in question (St. Petersburg Times). If the publication may be quoted concerning other categories/matters, I don't see why the inclusion of a quote from his 2004 speech mentioned on the same publication wouldn't be a noteworthy addition. Thoughts? Thank you for your time. AlexJohnTorres12 (talk) 12:41, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
