Hi Rambling Man, hope you've been well. I've been rather busy in the real world, and have been away from my GAN work. I expect in a few weeks, I'll have more time and get back to it. (Hope you'll still be keen on doing GAN reviews then!) In the meantime, if you're interested in taking a look at a FAC (here) that you had done the GAN review for, I'd appreciate it, as always. Need some advice about a past FLC

I put List of cyclists with a cycling-related death up for FL consideration in September 2019-November 2019 (my first attempt ever) and it failed. The main sticking-point turned out to be the overall style of the List as it has two different styles. The first part has the cyclists' names/stats/info in a table, second part is a bulleted list in purely text form. Everything else in the List - referencing, text, photos, etc. - was gone over by the reviewers and so far as I can tell everything else was eventually approved. The List, however, did not gain consensus to gain FL-status because of the differing styles of the 2 parts - the "Support" was half and the "non-Support" was half. Is there a criteria that states FLs must internally conform in style? Is there anything I can do, to possibly get it to FL status? - barring overhauling either section to agree with the other (either fully a Table or fully a Bulleted List). Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 20:48, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Shearonink I remember the discussion on that list we had. I will do my best to take a look in the next few days and try to get you some feedback, hope you're well and safe. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 20:55, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Shearonink, I think the main problem might stem from the article title and the opening sentence of the bullet point list which says "These athletes did not die during actual competitions". That may mean the overall list should be called "List of cyclists who died in a cycling competition" or similar? Otherwise I can kind of see why the latter section looks odd in isolation, after all, those people had a "cycling-related death" as well. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 18:59, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I adjusted that sentence, you were right - I think it reads better now. I don't know, I was just now reading over the FLC and so far as I can tell the only remaining objection was the two parts having different styles with the consensus for being promoted/against being promoted 50/50. If the answer to "Why isn't it a FL?" is "because I don't like it" but having a unified-format isn't addressed in the criteria...Well then, why not?
I kind of inherited the article in its present form, just came upon it when it was an unreferenced pure List that looked like this. Part of the issue is the way that cycling regards its dead, there are pilgrimages to the various places of death, fans leave tokens on memorials, there's a reverence to the way these men & women have died, and so on. The only other sport I can think of that has a similar passion for its dead athletes is possibly NASCAR. It has a similar List: List of NASCAR fatalities - but that List has no rating and hasn't received any meaningful editing since maybe November 2018. I know it is possible to split the List and then apparently other editors' possible issues with its present bifurcated format might be appeased BUT cycling in general does not make that distinction, they're all cyclists! they died while training! they died while competing! - I think it would be a mistake to split the article because that goes against way the world of cycling regards all its dead.
I guess the bullet List section ended up being laid-out that way because all those deaths were as individuals, not as being a member of a Team on some track or participating during a Tour. I still think the Table and the bullet-List lay out in their differing formats that the deaths and the manner of deaths were different and that the present formatting of the different sections should be allowed in a FL. But if you think that this is an intractable issue then I'll not nominate this List again. Shearonink (talk) 20:12, 13 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Any other thoughts about possibly submitting it again (re: the Table format & the Bullet format being in the same List)? Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 05:54, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Shearonink sorry, I've been all over the place and missed getting back to you. If you'll allow me, I'll add your list to my backlog so I can refer to it and give it proper attention? I apologise, for some reason my time has been taken here with other things, and my time here has been limited by other things. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 22:16, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries, other things interfere with my Wikipedia-ing as well sometimes. Thanks, Shearonink (talk) 23:24, 17 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Shearonink I think it stands a good chance at FLC a second time round but I think you're right, the sticking point will be the different formats. It's not clear to readers as to why you distinguish between those who died in a race and those who died in general. A radical idea would be to remove the "during training" section altogether and rename the list "List of cyclists who died while racing" or something. It's a really hard one. I remember my own struggles with succinct descriptions of List of cricketers who have played for two international teams and List of elected British politicians who have changed party affiliation. Sometimes there's no easy way to do it. I know that's not helpful, but perhaps start another FLC with an opening "what do we all think?" query and see how it goes? No harm no foul, and FLC is going slow right now, it could be several months before it gets resolved? Not tremendously helpful I know, and sorry, but it's just my opinion, and I hope in some way it helps? Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 21:36, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kigali GA nomination

Hi TRM

I hope you're well, and coping with life without the football and cricket seasons... I have been using the time to flesh out the Kigali article a bit, and have nominated it for GA. My hope is eventually to get it up to FA as well if possible, so if you are able to do the review it would be nice to have any ideas for that as well. I'll see if I can have a look at 1981 UEFA Cup Final in the next day or two, as I see that's one of yours in the pipeline at the mo. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 14:28, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello mate, yes all is okay thanks. I'm left wondering what they're going to do about League 1 and and all that, doesn't appear to be any chance of a "reasonable" end to this season before next season "starts"...!! I'll take a look at Kigali, for sure. And anything on the UEFA Cup article would be much appreciated. Cheers, The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:36, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, I guess there's still a chance they'll play out the games behind closed doors in the summer or something, but who knows. Typical that the one season Cov put together a good run and have a decent chance of winning the division, it gets kiboshed!  — Amakuru (talk) 14:45, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'm really cut up for you!! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:47, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
He he, I'm sure you are!  — Amakuru (talk) 14:54, 11 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Amakuru I've taken it. Not sure if you've seen any of my GA reviews, but I'll be looking at it with FAC in mind, most suggestions will be beyond GA standard. Most people are fine with that, and I assume from your opening note, you will be too. I'll probably attack it in sections as my availability is a little sporadic for various reasons. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 07:40, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff, thanks mate.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:46, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Afternoon TRM, just a heads up that I've finally finished looking at all the points you made in the first pass of the Kigali GA. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 14:39, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cool, I'll try to take a look later this evening or tomorrow if not. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:41, 20 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A question

Hello again! I had a question about Lord Goff of Chieveley, which you very kindly did the GA review for a little while ago. Most of the photos that were on it at the time of GA had to be taken down because the copyright permissions weren't all there (which is of course the right thing to do). I'm wondering, if I brought the article to FAC, whether this would be a problem, either because of the earlier copyright issues or because the article is now rather sparse on photos. Would you know? Thanks in advance! Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 08:55, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Kohlrabi Pickle, I hope you're well. If I recall correctly, the FAC requirements relating to images is that you need at least one correctly licensed image in the article and no more. I would suggest that you would have no trouble at all with the image in the infobox, a reverse image search just throws up 3 results, all related to Wikimedia projects, so there's probably little doubt this image is fine to use. As for the other images, well someone will review those at the FAC. But in summary, you need just one image for a FA. Good luck! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 09:01, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much! Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 09:02, 12 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello The Rambling Man, this article is now at FAC here: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Robert Goff, Baron Goff of Chieveley/archive1. I was wondering, since you did the GA review, whether you would weigh in? Separately, I very much want to return the favour but I'm sorry I can't help with the ones you have at FAC now; I know next to nothing about football. I hope they go well. Perhaps when other more experienced reviewers have gone through the big stuff, I can say something about style and clarity. Kohlrabi Pickle (talk) 08:34, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You don't need to ping TRM on the talk page, they will get notifs automatically when you post here. :) --qedk (t c) 08:49, 22 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

On 16 May 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Chandrayaan-2, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the State Emblem of India was embossed on the wheels of the Chandrayaan-2 mission's lunar rover to leave behind patterned tracks on the lunar surface? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Chandrayaan-2. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Chandrayaan-2), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. 2009 Football League Championship play-off Final

@The Rambling Man: Firstly thank you for your input with the Stockport County F.C. article. It's been through a peer review and a copy edit but might need a bit of work at FAC stage to get it over the line. Happy to discuss/clarify anything with you, drop me a message on my talk page for anything major, as I would like to get the article promoted.

This message isn't about that article as such, I came across that you had made the 2009 Football League Championship play-off Final a good article however the article states,"Ward was shown a second yellow card for another intentional handball in the 79th minute, becoming the first player ever to have been sent off in a play-off final." I have to direct you to 1994 Football League Second Division play-off Final and also as referenced in the main Stockport County F.C. article that Michael Wallace (and Chris Beaumont) was sent off in the 1994 play off final therefore Jamie Ward couldn't have been the first.

Unless you mean the first player to be sent off in a play off final since the renaming of the English Football Leagues (1994 - Premier League, Division One, Division Two, Division Three/ 2009 - Premier League, Championship, League One, League Two) Or the first player to be sent off in a play off final at the new Wembley (Since the 2009 Play Off Final was played at the new Wembley Stadium while the 1994 Play Off Final was played at the old one) Thanks, Wna247 (talk) 23:07, 25 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, The Guardian definitely says first player ever in the play-off finals but that clearly isn't right so I'll amend the article. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 06:53, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries... Also just to let you know, I have made amends based on your notes for the FA Nomination for the main Stockport County Article, in case you haven't seen them Wna247 (talk) 07:29, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Not problem, I'm going to try to get some more of the FAC reviewed today. Plenty to go! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 07:31, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Stockport County F.C.

Just a few things to discuss from your last set of notes on the FA nomination page

Items to clarify:

Joe Hill is not notable?

— No linked page but was one of two players to score a hat trick in the 13-0 win. Refer to Cas Liber’s GA Review a few years ago in regards to the 13-0 victory they asked for “date and locale for the 13–0 win over Halifax Town (did anyone score more than 3 goals in that match??)” - In this match two players scored 3 or more goals – Joe Hill (3) and Percy Downes (4)

"have won[93] but" awkward placement (and I can't seem to access that source). Now ref 91

– should be of scanned newspaper cuttings from the Liverpool Echo about the match in question

Unclear as the true relevance of these friendlies to the overall history of the club.

– Frankfurt was the first time Stockport had played a foreign team at home, the tour of Germany was Stockport first ever international tour (and I think first tour altogether but can’t be sure on that) and the Hamburg friendly was arranged as Trautmann’s last act as general manager of the club. Happy to remove if deemed irrelevant.

"Wembley [116] " Stadium and probably worth noting it's the old one, and no space before ref.

– The word “Wembley” is linked to the 1923 stadium can write the word old before it if required''

Items to check:

" was televised" live? On the BBC?

English football on television States that “The BBC started its television service in 1936, although it was nearly a year before the very first televised match of football was screened” with the 1938 FA Cup final between Huddersfield Town and Preston North End being the first to be screened. October 1946 saw , the first live televised football match was broadcast by the BBC from Barnet – So from this I don’t think it would have been a live match more of a news report. Looking at BBC#The birth of British broadcasting, 1920 to 1922 – it looks like the BBC were broadcasting in 1922 so the 1933–34 match in question may have been a news report (There is a news report style video of that year’s final on YouTube)

"Shortly after midday on 23 July 1935..." emphasise this was in the off-season. Also, how did it catch fire?

– After checking several sources on the British Newspaper Archive, Freeman & Harnwell – Stockport County a complete record, and the official club website, it is not known how the fire was started. As mentioned all the records pre-1935 were destroyed, even the clubs historians find it difficult at times to piece certain things together especially from the very early years.

"whose 140 goals in five seasons are still a club record." what sort of club record? I don't think Ipswich has a club record for most goals scored in five seasons...

– Jack Connor is the only Stockport player to score that many goals for the club over any 5 season spell. I know this can be a bit confusing. Happy to discuss it but also happy to remove if deemed unnecessary.

I hope this brings a bit of clarity. Happy to re-write or remove any items above as necessary. Wna247 (talk) 15:09, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You can keep these notes at the FAC, it's better for everyone. I'd advise responding to each of my comments inline so (a) we both know you've responded to each point and (b) other reviewers can determine if the issues are satisfactorily resolved. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 15:10, 26 May 2020 (UTC)`[reply]
Ah, was going to do that but wasn't sure. I have added these notes to the FAC now. Wna247 (talk) 18:03, 26 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@The Rambling Man: I can understand the frustration with this article, After a peer review (by a user who has had many football club/football club history articles at FA and a copy edit, I was informed that there would only be minor issues with the article. As mentioned in the FA I have done amendments to all your notes so far, but I have really cut down the history section after this first pass. It is now down to just over 2,000 words. You have been great so far and I really appreciate your assistance and patience, if there is anything else you think should be changed or removed just let me know. Thinking some of the more recent history could probably be cut down a bit. I have a saved copy of the page before I cut down the history section so I will use that to form the basis of the History of Stockport County F.C. article when I get round to amending that.Wna247 (talk) 16:28, 2 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@The Rambling Man: Over the past few days I have been chopping more out of the history section, mainly the non-league part. I can understand if you don't wish to continue to FAC but anymore pointers would be appreciated. Wna247 (talk) 21:27, 8 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wna247 hey, I've been a bit distracted but I will take another look. Problem is, I'll need to start from scratch. And that'll take a lot of energy. It would probably be better to take it through GAN first now you've re-factored the history section drastically, if I'm honest. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 20:22, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Wna247 I just checked, I know it's still GA but given the recent edits, it'd be beneficial to take it to WP:GAR first to get some views on what you've done. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 20:25, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

2007 Football League Championship play-off Final

You brought back some bad memories there! No glory in the sun that day, just defeat in the rain. I did add a few bits on that 2007 final a while back but I didn't get very far. Particularly the match report of one single sentence two sentences! If you want to expand it, go for it. Not sure I have much more to add to it but if I think of anything else then I will chip in. All the best. --Jameboy (talk) 21:17, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Jameboy you're talking to someone who had one success in eight play-offs! Cheers, I'll do what I can to preserve what you added and expand upon it if I can. All the best. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 21:19, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, one thing I did just notice. Someone has expanded the Derby part of the "Route to the Final" section, arguably adding too much detail and now not balanced with the amount of coverage of Albion's season, so that probably needs evening out in some way. I'll see if I can expand the Albion part of that section a bit. --Jameboy (talk) 21:30, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Jameboy if you take a look at some of the recent GAs I've made (like from 2011 onwards) then you'll see I strive REALLY hard to balance things out. It helps in most cases that I'm neutral (other than 2000!). Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 21:39, 28 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A list question........

Hi TRM, hope you and your family are well in these turbulent times. As one of the doyens of lists, I wondered if I could run something by you.....? As you will be aware, there are now 45 FLs for number one US country songs, and my thoughts have turned to the idea of whether a FT could ultimately be made out of them. The only trouble is, the obvious "capstone" article is List of Billboard number-one country hits, and I can't think of any way in which such a "bare bones" article could be improved to FL status. I was just wondering if you had any thoughts as to how (whether) it might be possible......? All the best! -- ChrisTheDude (talk) 10:00, 30 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey Chris, all okay here thanks, hope the same is true for you. Certainly can be tough creating a decent lead article for featured topics of lists. I couldn't quite manage a featured article for Laureus World Sports Awards so GA would have to do. You could cover a bit of the history of the chart, the records (i.e. most number ones, longest at number one, career longevity etc), and then add a list linking each year with perhaps the most successful single(s) of each year? I'm having current thoughts on that relating to the EFL Championship play-offs, as I'm working through the finals and getting each of them to GA, but the "master" article is dross and links to the playoff articles rather than the finals as well. Not that helpful, I know, but I think you could craft something. And even if it's not featured-able, a FT is still eminently achievable if all the sub-topics are featured, just need to get a GA out of the main one... I just wonder, the article went through a GA nomination last year and User:Kosack failed it. I mean, I'm happy to go ahead with the FA nomination, I'm just aware of the fact that it's not changed much since August. – PeeJay 18:13, 5 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Black Museum

Another Black Mirror episode at GAN if you've got the time, Black Museum (Black Mirror). With recent heightened awareness of extrajudicial killings of black people, I went for the episode about a judicial killing of a black person, which has perhaps the most conflicting critical response I've seen so far. — Bilorv (Black Lives Matter) 21:18, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bilorv thanks for the opportunity. I will try to review the episode tomorrow and see what I can do. Very pertinent indeed. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 21:21, 14 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh

Dear Rambling Man. You recently put back the day and month of the birth date on the lead of the article Robert Stewart, Viscount Castlereagh. I had removed it not so long ago as it is given in the first section (named "Birth and origins") after the lead as well as in the infobox. This is explicitly allowed in MOS:BIRTHDATE. I find it is nice to give only the year in the lead and reserve the more precise form for the text. That is well what we do with all the other pieces of information given in the lead. The lead should never tell us something that is not in the text, and normally the text should develop the subject beyond what is given in the lead by adding detail and context. Similarly, the DNB and ODNB give only the years in the first sentence, whereas the full dates are given further down in the text. Admittedly, many, probably most, biographical Wikipedia articles repeat the full version of the birth date in the lead and in the first section of the text. I do not really understand why. Perhaps you can tell me. You have about 250,000 edits, so you probably know. I am still a novice trying to learn the trade. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 12:37, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Well you nailed it towards the end. If the birth/death dates are known, they invariably are used in the lead. It is very odd indeed to have just a year for one of them and a date for the other, in any case. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 12:39, 16 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The example that comes to mind is Tony Stratton-Smith. I had a source for date of death (from a book mentioning his funeral service), but none for date of birth. The current article is the way it is because somebody else added an unsourced DOB and I AGFed they weren't vandalising or wrong. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:00, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, certainly, I should have been clear, it's okay for the formats to be different if that's the best we can do, but if we do have RS for both then I can't see any good reason for them not to be used. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 12:11, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And of course the irony is that a reliable source now exists. I can't prove it was taken from a random IP's unsourced claim, but in any case a reputable publisher has decided to stake their reputation on it. As for Viscount Castlereagh, dates for both birth and death should be used. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 13:40, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've given all the names the gentlest of nudges more central. Should be spot on now. – PeeJay 13:26, 18 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, apparently Michael Gray's name doesn't want to be in the right place, no matter how much I move it. Let me try one more thing and I'll get another version uploaded. – PeeJay 10:45, 19 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The strange thing was that it was appearing fine in the editing software and when you opened the file on its own in Chrome, but whenever it was rendered within another page, even the File page on Commons, it would shift his name over. Just requesting some advice

Hi Rambling Man, I have a question for you, since you're one of the main authorities on Featured Lists. I would like to get Great American Novel up to Featured Status, but I have some doubts on whether I could.

  • I'm not super confident on the inclusion criteria. I figured that to be the Great American Novel, there should be extensive academic discussion. I only included novels that I could find at least two references for. Is that appropriate?
  • I also have a question on the structure. Should I merge the history section with the lede, or is it okay to have a separate lede and history section.

I hope this is the right place to ask this - I figured that a peer review would be for more extensive discussion. Thanks, just didn't want to put a massive amount of work into it for nothing. ~ HAL333 20:24, 29 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

HAL333 hey, thanks for your note. In my mind, this could certainly become a FL, but as you have already opined, there is a question mark surrounding inclusion. One imagines that this is always going to be an {{incomplete list}} as should be marked as such, but that doesn't necessarily prevent it becoming featured. A well-defined set of inclusion criteria is thus going to be vital. I would say your approach of at least two academic sources is a good starting point. It's a little outside my area of expertise, so it might be worth asking at a relevant Wikiproject what the community would deem a valid "Great American Novel". As for structure, that's easy. If the lead looks like it's too big, then create a history section. That is a perfectly appropriate approach to FLs and is used across the board. Hope some of that helps, cheers. TRM, I collapsed this section in the interest of furthering Ealdgyth’s plea. If you look at F&f’s first post in the thread, you will see he did not personalize. In fact, I did, and you did, with your “petty” comment. Let’s try to move forward. Sorry for ipad typos, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 19:47, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, no problem. I think I may seek an IBAN between me and F&F as we are clearly on very different pages and I am sick and tired of being made to feel inadequate and like I'm somehow gaming the system. He can use that approach on someone else because I've had enough of it. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 20:08, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But I am not seeing it at FAC talk ... is there somewhere else I should read? SandyGeorgia (Talk) 20:11, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You're not? Never mind. I don't expect to ever be given an equal hearing here, so let's just assume my motives, my actions and my articles can be continually questioned and nay-say'ed by F&F with impunity. Hence why an IBAN would be a good thing. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 20:17, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
TRM it is very hard for me to keep up from ipad. Sorry for typos and ecs. If you give me an example, I will approach F&f. But I do not think asking for an iban wise, as there are plenty of grossly uncivil participants there who should be outright banned, and trying to all get along seems preferable. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:25, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
SandyGeorgia don't worry about typos etc, no issue. I have a deadly keyboard thanks to Apple so I'm always correcting etc. I will certainly be asking for an IBAN should Fowler's snide sniping and insinuations continue. I'm sure you know that I've been around for 15 years. I'm sure you know I've contributed a considerable amount of decent material in that time. What I object to is now to be accused of subversive behaviour to collect stars, to "buddy up" with people to swing my FACs through, to work on "cookie cutter" material, to somehow disrespect George Floyd. It's all far too much. F&F is basically harassing me and it needs to stop. And I'm not his only victim. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 22:33, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ipad typing is slow, it inserts uppercase where should not, and I end up with ems and ens where spaces are intended, then it is hard to go back and correct.
I have not seen when F&f says such things that you can assume he means you ... that particular behavior became common, and I do not have evidence it is directed at you. Unless I, too, am chased off, I will have a word with F&f after his break. Best I can offer for now ... SandyGeorgia (Talk) 22:39, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

TRM, It's not the first time that F&F has been disruptive at FAC and the same one or two people step in to defend him. One has to wonder what the agenda and endgame is... - SchroCat (talk) 22:20, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm surprised. I thought Sandy was able to read through threads but it's apparent that F&F has curried favour somewhere and is allowed to be a tolerated offensive influence. Odd one for me. But he's definitely fixated on my FACs now, although lacks the confidence to actually bother to review a single one of them. It's real easy to just dismiss anything other than what you do or like personally, and then do nothing else. As my grandad would have said, "what a load of ball-busting bollocks". The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 22:24, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, he gets a free pass (or the telescope to the eyepatch and ‘I see no ships’) because his attacks suit an agenda. It’s laughable to see the denials of sub-standard behaviour from that troll, given the number of dramah-fests he has started at FAC and on individual noms. The sooner he is shown the door, the more productive and less disrupted FAC will be. - SchroCat (talk) 22:39, 30 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For me, it's beyond belief. I think there's some capability in there somewhere on some niche Indian stuff, but he's shown his hand when supporting FACs which have some serious issues. I'm not clear though, is he just pissed off about diversity, or quality, or both? Because his support of a topic of which he clearly has a reduced level of knowledge is really harmful. Mjroots cheers, appreciated. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 07:27, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've had a look, and it seems that there is no procedure for requesting an editor be granted the right. So, either you can request permission yourself at Wikipedia:Requests for permissions/Template editor, or I will raise a discussion at WP:AN. You will understand that given your past loss of admin rights I won't be bold and grant you the right without discussion. Not that I think you'll misuse the right, but we are where we are. Mjroots (talk) 07:30, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh sure, I understand. I never ever once abused the admin rights when it came to content, but I understand the "under a cloud" thing. If you're still prepared to do this, that'd be great. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 07:33, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh well, I tried. Looks like you'll just have to run for admin again. Mjroots (talk) 09:04, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And as the saying goes, "two hopes, Bob and no"! Cheers though. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 09:05, 1 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

WikiCup 2020 July newsletter

The third round of the 2020 WikiCup has now come to an end. The 16 users who made it into the fourth round each had at least 353 points (compared to 68 in 2019). It was a highly competitive round, and a number of contestants were eliminated who would have moved on in earlier years. Our top scorers in round 3 were:

  • New York (state) Epicgenius, with one featured article, 28 good articles and 17 DYKs, amassing 1836 points
  • Botswana The Rambling Man , with 1672 points gained from four featured articles and seventeen good articles, plus reviews of a large number of FACs and GAs
  • England Gog the Mild, a first time contestant, with 1540 points, a tally built largely on 4 featured articles and related bonus points.

Between them, contestants managed 14 featured articles, 9 featured lists, 3 featured pictures, 152 good articles, 136 DYK entries, 55 ITN entries, 65 featured article candidate reviews and 221 good article reviews. Additionally, Denmark MPJ-DK added 3 items to featured topics and 44 to good topics. Over the course of the competition, contestants have completed 710 good article reviews, in comparison to 387 good articles submitted for review and promoted. These large numbers are probably linked to a GAN backlog drive in April and May, and the changed patterns of editing during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we enter the fourth round, remember that any content promoted after the end of round 3 but before the start of round 4 can be claimed in round 4. Please also remember that you must claim your points within 14 days of "earning" them. When doing GARs, please make sure that you check that all the GA criteria are fully met. Please also remember that all submissions must meet core Wikipedia policies, regardless of the review process.

If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article nominations, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed (remember to remove your listing when no longer required). Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove your name from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Hi, TRM. I'm just posting to let you know that Laureus World Sports Award for Team of the Year – a list that you have been heavily involved with – has been chosen to appear on the Main Page as Today's featured list for July 27. The TFL blurb can be seen here. If you have any thoughts on the selection, please post them on my talk page or at TFL talk. Regards, Giants2008 (Talk) 01:22, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Afternoon, I hope this message finds you well. 1988 Football League Second Division play-off Final has just slightly improbably sailed through the GA process. I wondered if you were interested in jumping on board for a FA push? Harrias talk 13:49, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Harrias count me in! That's one heck of a GA review...!! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:17, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. as for improbable passes, see the section just one above this one! The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:25, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Harrias, I've just put the classic of classic play-off finals up at FAC now. It'd be good if you'd take a look at that, either another source review or a prose review (or both, whatever floats your boat). What's the plan for 1988? I'll see if I can sniff up a few more snippets to expand the match reports and maybe a bit more on the background? I have a book source which states the game was worth £1m according to Deloitte so that can go in too (if it's not already in there). The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 16:51, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take a look at the FAC in the next few days I'm sure! My main thoughts for 1988 are that the hooliganism needs putting into context: both with regards to Chelsea themselves, who had a bit of a reputation for it, and in the wider context of English football hooliganism. At the time, English clubs were still banned from European competition after Heysel, and there was some speculation in the press that these riots might have extended that ban. The article at the moment doesn't given any background or aftermath to the riots at all. From the football side of things, I'm relatively happy: I think the second leg could obviously do with a bit more information if it's available, but from what I recall, there wasn't much, because the reports understandably concentrated on the rioting. Harrias talk 17:18, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Cool. I should be able to take a look tomorrow. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 17:21, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a first attempt at a background for the hooliganism, let me know what you think. Harrias talk 09:34, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Harrias will do. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 09:38, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Harrias yeah, that looks good. Is this any use? I also caught a sniff of a source saying there had been hooliganism at one of the semi-finals in 1988 as well but I've lost that momentarily... The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 09:57, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

GAs

You removed your message from my talk page before I could reply, so allow me to answer here: Your GAN isn't the only one affected. I notified the user in question, who has also done two other reviews (including that for one of my articles). I don't think that nominating an article that already appears to have passed is the way to go. If these review was improper (which it probably was), the review should be deleted and all associated actions reversed. Could you check whether this needs to be done for your article, as well as for the other two? Regards, IceWelder [] 10:53, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I've resolved it for mine. There was a bit of discussion at WT:GAN which helped pave the way. The primary issue with deletion/renomination is losing the place in the queue. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 10:55, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the advice. I contacted the third affected editor and all three reviews involved with this have now been withdrawn. If the issue comes up again, please let me know. Regards, IceWelder [] 14:29, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Your comments have been resolved. Can you take a look? Thanks. ~~ CAPTAIN MEDUSAtalk 12:16, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The answer turns out to be NO, the contents of the death certificate cannot be used in an article. Per discussion on the Reliable Sources talk page. Had I thought of that route, I could have avoided this grief at the AN page. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots05:25, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

April–May 2020 GAN Backlog drive

Thank you for completing a truly incredible 105 reviews in the April–May 2020 GAN Backlog drive. Your work helped us to reduce the backlog by over 60%. Regards, Harrias talk 08:38, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It also brings me great pleasure to award you the Content Review Medal, for completing the most reviews during the April–May 2020 GAN Backlog drive. I was staggered by the participation, and honestly shocked that so many users completed more than 50 reviews, let alone the 105 that you managed. Both from my spotchecks, and my own experiences of your reviews, you also did so without compromising on quality; what an achievement! Well done, Harrias talk 08:44, 11 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Have another shiny thing! This is for all your excellent work on scrutinising those article which appear on the Main page for errors, highlighting and resolving them. I'm well aware that it has caused its fair share of controversy, but in my opinion at least, you do an excellent job of trying to maintain Wikipedia's standards on those article which are most visible, so thank you. League Two playoff finals

I'm noticing a trend in your recent GA and FA nominations and wondering if you're going to get as far as the bottom tier eventually? There will be some happy memories coming if so... I was at Wembley for that game, and although one generally doesn't want to be down in League Two in the first place it was still a fantastic day out! I might do some work on it myself if I have the time, although that tends to be a bit rare at the moment and I already have several other content "projects" on the go.  — Amakuru (talk) 14:26, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, yeah, it's a long-term goal but I'd like to get all 99 (as of 2019) play-off final articles to at least GA and then get English Football League play-offs sorted out for an epic mother of a WP:GT. It would be a pleasure to work on that one with you and get it to FA (recent and "legendary" finals should be okay at FAC, the others will probably get as far as GA and then grind to a halt). Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:30, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Amakuru I've made a start. Plenty to do. If you'd like to add some "flavour" in due course, that'd be great. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 15:44, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, nice one that's great. I'll try to add some stuff in the next few days. I guess 2017 EFL Championship play-off Final is the gold standard for how these sorts of articles should look once fully polished!  — Amakuru (talk) 16:25, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, is there a reason why in all these articles "Final" is capitalised and "play-off" isn't? It seems like either it's a proper name, in which case it should all be capitalised, or it's a descriptive title in which final would not be capitalised.  — Amakuru (talk) 16:28, 16 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Amakuru fair point. Probably worth opening a discussion of it at WP:FOOTY or at least see if anything has been discussed there before. I'm pretty close to done now, it needs a good copyedit and some more reaction (and then the lead needs to be updated) but it's 90% there I think. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 11:09, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Good stuff. I'll ping a message over to WP:FOOTY - might be one of those things that's there because they've always done it that way, and there are some cases like "FA Cup Final" where sources generally always capitalise. Will also have a look through the text and add some extra reactions and other stuff. I can put in the reactions of myself, my brother and my son if that's helpful as we were all at the game...  — Amakuru (talk) 11:28, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Amakuru I bet you don't have something useful like a photo of the game though, do you...? The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 14:34, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I do as it happens. See Commons:Category:2018 EFL League Two play-off Final. Not the best pics in the world, but better than nothing!  — Amakuru (talk) 17:06, 18 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Amakuru wonderful. Okay, so how are you feeling about the article? I think we just need to expand the lead and it's good to go at GAN. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 12:13, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, it all looks pretty good to me, mate. Thanks for that. I've added a little bit to the lead and I'd agree that it's pretty much GA-ready now. Cheers  — Amakuru (talk) 21:09, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Amakuru it's amazing what you can achieve with a few hours of solid attention on an article. I'll nominate it at GAN with you as co-nom. And then, in due course, we can think about FAC. Cheers. The Rambling Man (Stay indoors, stay safe!!!!) 21:14, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
