Roth and Fowles, epitaphs and graves

Hi Gerda. Do you remember what I said here? I took a long time to upload that image for the Ernst Roth article. Now I've finally managed to do the same for the Leonard N. Fowles article. It being a musical subject and both having epitaphs related to that, I thought you might appreciate a note about this. One happy editor

Dear Gerda, - I want to thank you, so much, for naming me an "awesome Wikipedian" for my work on the Mark Satin biography, and for giving me my day! As you may know, the article was "Today's featured article" on the Main Page that day, and I (with others' help) have had to spend all my Wikipedia time since then digging out from under various malicious edits and inappropriate edits. Receiving the award when I did made these last 10 days much more bearable for me.

I would love to put news of the award on my talk page! I've done so in the text, but I would prefer doing so with a Userbox, particularly if it has that gorgeous blue sapphire on it. Is there one? I'll watch this space for your reply. - Babel41 (talk) 04:21, 22 January 2015 (UTC)

I've uploaded the first page of the manuscript, by Johann Andreas Kuhnau, Bach's copyist in Leipzig, but the quality is terrible, and I don't know why. I asked for deletion on Commons :( There's another page from the manuscript in my source, by Bach himself (end of the 1st part + beginning of the 2nd (Aria for alto, oboe and cello/continuo)). Orwell does indeed offer a number of good recommendations for writing, which I try to keep in mind when I write and edit.

Ah yes, I remember seeing that DYK. By the way, I just noticed that the author of that article is relatively new. You've done good work in being encouraging to him/her. At a time when almost anything can become controversial (staying away from Muhammed and Danzig no longer guarantees safety), gathering and maintaining new quality editors is paramount. The assistance provided to me by Wehwalt in my early days here cannot be overstated, and I'm sure that I wouldn't be editing today had he not helped me navigate the learning curve. I woke up,

fell out of bed and didn’t even drag a comb across my head, but instead, headed for my computer and wikipedia. You can not imagine (as if I really know anything about your imagination) how good it felt to receive your note and gem. Last night a brother and I had been trying to track down a star sapphire ring of my mother’s and although we were not successful finding that, yours on my desktop this a.m. seems . . …. significant. Your summation of my wikipedia career was impressive and insightful and yes, I will miss TParis. Bruckner and Chorale

Dear Gerda,

I was it, who wrote this sentence in Chorale. I will see how I can reword / expand it.

The Messe für den Gründonnerstag, WAB 9, is a nice early choral composition. Unfortunately, there is only a single recording of the full original setting of the mass by Frieberger (Fabian Records CD 5115), a CD you have to acquire in Austria. Moreover, the Kyrie and Gloria, which Bruckner composed afterwards, are lost.

FYI: Last week, I found a beautiful live-performance of Mass No. 3 from Rostock on YouTube: [2]. Hans Roelofs e-mailed me: "Een best imposante uitvoering met goede HD-kwaliteit, dus ik heb hem met genoegen meteen opgenomen en op cd gezet! Bedankt voor de tip!"

Mass No. 2 (1. Fassung, 1866)

If you want to hear the 1. Fassung (1866) of Mass No. 2 by H.-C. Rademann go to YouTube Romantische Chornacht mit dem RIAS Kammerchor in der Basilika Kloster Eberbach. The mass begins on the 49th minute.

There a total of 143 (!) differences versus the 2. Fassung (1882). Most are small (different instrumentation or articulation). The most obvious differences are mainly in the Credo (different interludes, different "Et incarnatus est" and "Crucifixus", different instrumentation at the end) and Sanctus (3 additional "Sanctus" before "Pleni sunt caeli").

Additional YouTube links for Bruckner's Mass No. 3 and Requiem

Dear Gerda,

I have added additional YouTube links for Bruckner's Mass No. 3 and Requiem.

• For Mass No. 3, in addition to that of Igor Andrievskiy, which uses the Schalk-Wöß edition, I have added the recent, excellent performance by Christfried Göckeritz, for which there is also obviously no problem of copyright (uploaded by the hmtRostock].
• For the Requiem, in addition to that of Maija Breiksa (uploaded by herself), I have added the digitalisation of Friedrich Wolf's performance of 1974 (a 41 year-old LP) - a digitalization, which has not been issued as CD. Hopefully there is also no problem of copyright.

NB: For Mass No. 1 and Mass No. 2:

• For Mass No. 1, I have only the performance of Stephen Blackwelder, for which there is no obvious problem of copyright.
• For Mass No. 2 (2. Fassung, 1882), I have the performances by Georg Christoph Biller and Johannes Kleinjung, for which there are also no obvious problem of copyright.

For the Missa solemnis there is a pirate copy of Jürgens CD - the reason,for which I am not referring to it.

Opéra de Dijon

Hi Gerda. I see you found my latest opus . I've removed it from Wikidata as a co-link to fr:Grand Théâtre de Dijon because the articles are not really on the same subject or equivalent. I'm not too sure how Wikidata works, so go ahead and relink it if you think it's a good idea. There's certainly enough material for an article just on the Grand Théâtre de Dijon (I only used a small amount of it for the Opéra de Dijon article). I guess if a stand-alone Grand Théâtre article is ever created on EnWP the Wikidata links can always be changed. Voceditenore (talk) 18:19, 11 March 2015 (UTC)

Bruckner's Te Deum - Entwurffassung 1881

Beste Gerda,

Hans Roelofs provided me with a copy from a private CD of an "experimental" performance of the 1881 draft-version of Bruckner's Te Deum. See in Discography of Bruckner's Te Deum: "In dieser Übersicht läuft die Aufnahme unter Stolper (2003) gewissermaßen 'außer Konkurrenz', weil sie nicht in erster Linie ein ästhetisches Erlebnis vermitteln, sondern Einblicke in die 'Alchemistenwerkstatt' Anton Bruckners bieten will. Sie bietet eine frühe Version (1881) des Te Deums - vor allem Franz Schedel hat sich um diese Ausgrabung verdient gemacht. In ihr ist das Grundkonzept schon da, die Ausführung der Details allerdings noch unausgegoren; die endgültige Fassung ist schätzungsweise um ein Viertel länger. Vor allem IV und V erfuhren in den darauf folgenden Jahren eine wesentliche Umgestaltung und Erweiterung. Stimmen sind ausgeschrieben, die Instrumentierung angegeben aber nur rudimentär ausgearbeitet; die Begleitung wird in dieser Aufnahme vom Klavier übernommen und da, wo sie fehlt, durch die entsprechenden Stellen aus Schalks Klavierauszug ergänzt. Als Chor tritt ein nicht-professioneller Ad hoc-Chor auf. Die CD war nie im Handel und nur Interessenten zugänglich."

It is a live performance, which occurred on 07-10-2003 in Nürnberg. The draft version of 1881, which includes the vocal scores and some basic orchestration, is shorter than the final version (357 bars versus 513 bars). In particular the Aeterna fac is different and much shorter, and the final fugue is not yet composed. I find it very interesting. I have added a mention to it on the page Te Deum (Bruckner).

Very good! - I am in the process of expanding Requiem (Reger), including a fragment of a Latin Requiem, - finding sources not available 5 years ago, interesting! Also put shells on them with the Wikiprojects as very few had them. BUT, what I don't know how to do is get the photos on the Outcomes page. (They added like 50 images) Can you help?
