Help Needed Adding Citation

I have requested a change to a page and using the template sent information. How can I get support making this change? Thank you, Brigid Acuna

1) Please change phrasing from:

To:

What tag to use when a "fact" is apparently reliably sourced but looks dubious?

See Talk:Lisa_Curry#15_gold_medals?; I have found a claim which is apparently reliably sourced (Australian Sport Hall of Fame claims Lisa Curry has won 15 international gold medals in swimming) but just does not stack up. (Perhaps juniors/seniors medals are included, but then we should clarify). There are a few options suggested at Template:Clarify, but I am unsure: which tag is appropriate in this situation? AfD Article has copyrighted text, creator claims original authors have granted fair-use permission.

Recently deleted Draft:Oligodon Russelius moved from Draft:Oligodon russelius(tagged speedy) about a recently described species of snake had copyrighed text taken from https://reptile-database.reptarium.cz/species?genus=Oligodon&species=russelius. The creator of the draft Wild Trait (talk) have informed me (via my talk page) that the author(s) of the publication from which the text in question is taken (about the desc. of the species) have provided him the article pdf and granted perms to put it in Wikipedia. Hi Vulpes-bengalensis You might want to ask about this at WP:CP, I don't think you should upload a pdf to Commons even if its licensed appropriately for Commons since that's not really good to mean the text is going to be OK to use. If the text has been appropriately licensed, all that is needed is some way to verify that license and that can typically be done as explained in WP:DCP. However, even if it the text is appropriately licensed, that still doesn't mean Wikipedia should be using it verbatim. The copyirght holder most likely has written the content as they wanted to write it and not as Wikipedia policies and guidelines want Wikipedia articles to be written. So, even if the licensing is acceptable, it will still be preferred for the draft's creator summarize and rewrite things in their own words and appropriately support whatever claims are being made by citations to reliable secondary sources. An acceptable license means the content would not a copyright violation per se, but it doesn't mean Wikipedia has to use the content as written and it doesn't mean things like WP:N, WP:V, WP:NPOV, WP:NOT and WP:OR no longer apply. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:27, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

• @Vulpes-bengalensis and Wild Trait: I think there are a few misunderstandings about copyright here.

1. If the author of the text wants to donate it to Wikipedia, they need to go through WP:DCP. We cannot accept a random person’s assertion that the author is OK with it, we need verifiable proof that the copyright holder agreed.
2. "I grant permission to use on Wikipedia" is not a license we accept. We require a CC BY-SA license. As the WP:DCP page explains in bold font, it means (among other things) that anyone can then reuse the text, not just Wikipedia.
3. Commons is a repository of freely-licensed files, that can be reused by anyone under a CC BY-SA (or less restrictive) license. Therefore, "fair use" is never acceptable on Commons. The English Wikipedia (a separate project) allows, in addition to files from Commons, to use some non-free media if it satisfies fair use plus a bunch of additional restrictions. I am not sure those restrictions allow text at all (since text can fairly easily be read, digested and rewritten in a way that does not implicate copyright issues, unlike images).
4. If some text is validly "donated", I rather doubt that a PDF upload on Commons is the proper way to go about it. Maybe Wikisource?

Hi White Orchid27. You can find some information about this at WP:TRANSLATEUS. Wikipedia's licensing requires that all re-uses of article content (including translations of such content) be done in accordance with WP:REUSE. If you're going to translate the article for the purpose of adding it to another langauge Wikipedia project (e.g. French Wikipedia), then it's important to understand that each local Wikipedia project has its own policies and guidelines, and you're going to need to make sure your translation satisfies those policies and guidelines. There might be a lot of similarities between English Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and those of other Wikipedia projects, but there might also be some (perhaps important) differences. So, you might want to find out what these policies and guidelines are first just to make sure you understand what's going to be expected of you. -- Marchjuly (talk) 08:35, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Trouble with a template

Hey guys,
I noticed the map was missing in the infobox of 14th Street (Manhattan) and wanted to fix it. I figured the problem was | image_map = Maplink-road and I looked at Template:Maplink-road/doc for the solution and decided to substitute maplink|13|30.2795|-97.7515 from there, to preview and continue onwards. My edit is rejected/reverted?

Hi - I've tried making changes to the Tatiana Maslany wiki page twice. Her credit on my film (my edit) has been removed twice. I just copied the format from similar entries and the edit seemed to work. I successfully added a hyperlink to my film's title directing the reader to the film on YouTube. Tatiana is in the credits. Mikolla First, if you are making edits related to your film, you must read about conflict of interest and paid editing. You should not make these edits directly, but you may propose them on the article talk page(Talk:Tatiana Maslany) in the form of an edit request(click for instructions).

You added a link to a YouTube video- this is not considered an appropriate source. If you are trying to source the claim to your film, this is unnecessary, as someone need only watch the film to see the name in the credits. 331dot (talk) 12:20, 9 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. This is incredibly complicated. Every step requires that I read a long page of instructions, with links to other long pages. I now understand about the external links (thanks). The only mention of me on Wiki is this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1999_Toronto_International_Film_Festival. Can that be the link? I'm the director and I guess a paid wiki editor, in that the short film generated some income (lost money overall, with distribution). Can someone just put back my entry, with or without the hyperlink? Under her film credits: Subterranean Passage, year 2000, voice. Just like "Ginger Snaps" after it. Producing a graph for this company

Hi. For AMTD Digital I want to ask if there is a way to produce a graph that shows the stock price of it during these last 2 weeks?

The reason the company is notable in the first place is because how high it jumped in only 2 weeks. It would be nice if that could be illustrated.

Hello, Imcdc. I am not proficient at creating graphs, but take a look at GameStop short squeeze which is also about a company that also had dramatic swings in its stock price. Imcdc It took me a few minutes to realise that the GameStop article uses a special template {{GameStop stock price graph}} based on the general template {{Graph:Chart}}. You ought to be able to work from that. And Bazza 7, WP:NOTNEWS merely affirms that we do not offer first-hand news reports on breaking stories. We do, however, use reliable already-published sources to create articles on notable topics in the news, as seen every single day on the Main Page. As Cullen328 points out, AMTD Digital meets our standard guidelines. I even spotted coverage of it in The Times last Saturday, which I added to the article. Using m^2 vs km^2

Hello all! I was looking at the article for Recursive islands and lakes and I noticed one of the tables uses m^2 as their measurement while all the other tables use km^2 as their measurement. None of the values in the table that uses m^2 are particularly served by using meters instead of kilometers (they aren't much bigger or smaller than the others), so I'm wondering if I should change it to km^2 and divide the numbers appropriately? @Tyong127: It's a matter of editorial judgement, so you are free to make the decision. The areas in the one table that uses m^2 are really, really small, so I would just leave it alone. Remember that there are one million (1000^2) square meters in a square kilometer.

Identical big or small chunks of crucial information in 2 articles

If two articles contain the same important, not easily found information in about 2–10 chapters, then how to decide which is a better place for these paragraphs, or do we need to duplicate those from one article to another? I moved 2 paragraphs (with some grammar corrections) to an article where I thought those paragraphs were more important. Then I deleted those 2 paragraphs from the first article and made a "See also" -link there. I also wrote in summary (fi.wiki): "the Civil War portion (2 paragraphs) has been moved to the article Syrian Civil War". Then the corrector restored 2 old chapters and deleted the link with a message: "text containing sources has been deleted without justification". This is a difficult and common problem but I have found nothing about it in the Wikipedia help files. Jari Rauma (talk) 11:24, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Hi Jari Rauma. I think that the nearest guidance here is WP:CFORK but Finnish Wikipedia will have its own guidance, so really you need to ask at their equivalent of the Helpdesk/Teahouse, which I assume you can find knowing the language. Clearly, small bits of information may be justify being repeated in multiple articles but large chunks are better covered just once, if only for ease of updating. Yes, this looks like Jim McCarthy (comics). Since this is a Wikipedia article and he is a living person, the image would have to be free to use. It looks like you uploaded the current image to Wikimedia Commons in 2014. If you took a new self portrait of reasonable technical and artistic quality, you could upload it to Commons with a CC license and use it in the infobox of the Wikipedia article.--♦IanMacM♦ ^{(talk to me)} 14:17, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

"Overlinking" or was it proper linking?

An editor/reviewer on Aug. 9 twice reverted the WP link to the article "United States" I added to the first sentence of Languages of the United States. My link allegedly violated WP's overlink policy of never linking "common terms." Yet every single country-related WP article (ex., "Languages of...," "Demography of...," etc.) is linked to its specific country upon first mention. The editor is unimpressed that 99.99% of country-specific articles in WP are blue-linked this way; my link still runs counter to the guidelines. I think the editor has misread the guidelines, but otherwise, shouldn't the thousands of similar articles be de-linked too? Mason.Jones (talk) 17:13, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Template transclusion line spacing

There is an extra blank line rendered before the table at World Chess Championship 1984–1985#1983–84 Candidates Tournament (although only a single blank line is included in the source code, as is usual). @Bazza 7: Thanks, but as I tried to imply, a single empty line before a template (which is similar to spacing a new paragraph) is totally normal in the source code, and should only be rendered as a line break, not an actual line spacing. Special:ExpandTemplates shows the template output doesn't start with an empty line but a table with a margin:

{| border=0 cellpadding=0 cellspacing=0 style="font-size: 90%; margin:1em 2em 1em 1em;

It also did so before using a module.[1] This is clearly deliberate. A change would require discussion. Existing uses may rely on the current margins for layout. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:54, 10 August 2022 (UTC)

Missing country table list

Latin Wikipedia

For the past few days every time I open Wikipedia, it is the Latin version. I am using the same shortcut on my desktop. If I type in Wikipedia.org instead of using the shortcut and type in a search term on the home page, the result is in Latin unless I specifically choose the English version before typing in the search term. https://www.wikipedia.org is the common entry for all Wikipedia languages. The search box has a language selector which says "LA" for Latin. Change it to "EN" for English. If you always want the English Wikipedia then I suggest to change your shortcut to https://en.wikipedia.org, or https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Search if you prefer a page with more search options. Company logos

The logo on the page for the company I work for is out of date. I want to update it with the new one, but I think it’s a non-free image. External people/companies are required to gain permission from us to use the logo on their website, so I’m guessing this means it’s non-free… Can anyone suggest what I’m best doing? Wikipedia's Assessment Period

We as Monty Mobile the company we have contracted with an intermediate agency that writes content for Wikipedia called wikiprofessionals and they claim that the assessment period is 4 months and if we are not active through out this period the page will be terminated and we will be banned for 2 years I would like to know if this information is legit.

Note that a ban is the most severe category of restriction that can be imposed at Wikipedia. Enforcement of a ban is done by all Wikipedia editors who choose to help: there are about 100,000 active editors in any given 30-day period. Any edit of any type by a banned editor anywhere in Wikipedia can and should be reverted by any editor on sight, without discussion or appeal. If this organization somehow succeeds in sneaking a page in for you, no matter how good it is, we will delete it when we find out. Do not pay them. -Arch dude (talk) 13:22, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

If you're worried about an article on the company, it's unlikely it will be creation-protected after just one deletion. Your company/its agents wouldn't be blocked/banned, but as noted the company you hired is legitimately banned and so their efforts will be undone regardless of the quality of their writing. If your company meets Wikipedia's criteria for notability, we could have an article about you. Irrespective of who created the article, it would not belong to you, would not be controlled by you, would not be for your benefit except incidentally, would not necessarily say what you wanted it to say, and should be based almost entirely on what people unconnected with you have chosen to publish about your company (favorable or unfavorable), not on what you say or want to say. @SchinLBL: first, use an image editing program on your computer to modify the metadata on a copy of the image. Take out your name and put in the real copyright and/or trademark info. Next, upload this modified image as an update to the existing file. Information about changing usernames can be found at WP:RENAME. However, it seems your name seems to indicate you represent a company, in which case you will need to see the username policy and probably the page regarding managing conflicts of interest. Advertising an edit drive

Hey, so the WikiProject Vital Articles just make a new drive called 30 kB drive that promotes expanding short articles, and I don't know how to publicize the drive besides messaging on user talk pages. Sagat (rapper)

First of all I am Faustin M Lenon Jr. who is the actual writer of Funk Dat and I am also Jump Chico Slamm which is the name I use for my production entity. As I look at the wikipedia page Sagat (rapper) You actually have a picture of someone else. Upon clicking on the picture it leads to another artist Trinidad James. I hate the fact that throughout the years all I have ever tried to do is have my information updated to reflect the truth.. And still somehow it seems like there are still extreme failures on Wikipedia.

@Kerumino Sagat (rapper) does not currently have a picture. So far as I can tell, there has never been a photo included in that article. Are you by any chance talking about the Google Knowledge Graph? If so, Wikipedia has no control over what Google chooses to display in their knowledge graph. Are you by any chance referring to a photo or text shown to the right of a Google search? Google's Knowledge Graph uses a wide variety of sources. There may be a text paragraph ending with "Wikipedia" to indicate that particular text was copied from Wikipedia. An image and other text before or after the Wikipedia excerpt may be from sources completely unrelated to Wikipedia. We have no control over how Google presents our information, but Google's Knowledge Graph has a "Feedback" link where anyone can mark a field as wrong. @Kerumino, if you look at the bottom right corner of the knowledge panel on google, you should see a tiny link that says "Feedback" (at least if you're on laptop). Try using that, it may work. Or the link/button next to it. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:17, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

The main suggestion is given above - complain to Google.

But there is another possibility that might work: if you arrange that Wikipedia's article about you has a picture of you, then it is possible that Google will use that picture, rather than picking up the wrong one from somewhere else. (We can't guarantee what Google will do, but I think that's quite likely).

In order to do that you will need whoever owns the copyright to a picture (which will probably not be you unless either it's a selfie or you have a contract with the photographer that says you own the copyright) to upload the the picture to Commons, releasing it under a suitable license (which will allow anybody to reuse it freely. They can do this using the Upload wizard.

Once they have uploaded the picture to Commons, then you can make an edit request on Talk:Sagat (rapper), to add the picture to the article.

I'm afraid this is somewhat convoluted: images are in Wikipedia, mostly because of copyright concerns. ColinFine (talk) 17:17, 11 August 2022 (UTC)

@Muboshgu Just out of curiosity, what does Wikipedia construe as a legal threat? After reading WP:NLT, I don't see an obvious one in @Bradfallonesq's message. It's demanding, condescending and rude, sure, but I don't see a threat of legal action... Does the implication of legal action constitute a legal threat?

I'm not trying to say he shouldn't've been blocked or that what you did was wrong, I'm just genuinely curious how you and other administrators interpret the term legal threat.

Yes, the infobox image is rather crap and inappropriate unless he was known primarily as a criminal.   • I agree with this file being removed. The claim of "own work" made by the uploader is almost certainly incorrect and the State of Georgia isn't one of the US states which releases works by its employees into the public domain. This could've just be a good faith misunderstanding by someone regarding c:COM:L and c:COM:Own work, but it also could be a WP:BLPCOI or WP:RGW issue as well since there's a entire category at c:Category:Delvis Dutton filled with similar images and other files also being erroneously claimed as "own work". The block for the NLT was warranted, but it might also be a good idea for some admins to monitor this article for awhile because there's probably been some COI editing going over the years and there probably be more attempts to add questionably licensed images to the article. -- Marchjuly (talk) 07:32, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

Unexplained blank line

In General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University, there is a blank line after the first nav box. I think it is coming from {{Sri Lanka Armed Forces Educational Institutions}}, because if I switch the order, the blank follows after this template. Question about AfC process

Hello,

I'm working on a draft article that was created with the AfC (articles for creation) tool. I'm not looking to move my draft into article namespace just yet, but I was wondering if when the time comes I am obliged to use the AfC submission process, or if, as an autoconfirmed user, I should move it myself manually.

Hi LocalWonk. WP:AFC is optional, but it can be helpful for newer editors who don't have an established track record for creating viable Wikipedia articles. Drafts approved via AfC seem to have a better chance of avoiding being quickly nominated for deletion since AfC reviewers tend to be experienced editors who understand WP:N and who don't approve things that are going to end up being quickly deleted. Of course, even going through AfC doesn't guarantee that an article will never end up being deleted, but there does seem to be less of a risk. Assuming the draft you're asking about is Draft:Zaynab Mohamed, it's unlikely that moving it to the article namespace yourself will lead to it being tagged for speedy deletion per WP:A7 or something like that, but it could end up being nominated for deletion for WP:NPOL and WP:TOOSOON reasons if you tried to move it at this time. If you're going to forgo the review process of AfC, you might want to seek assistance at a possibly relevant WikiProject to get feedback that way. -- Marchjuly (talk) 09:15, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

Name of God

When I google "What does Hashem mean in Arabic," I get a listing from Wikipedia.It tells me it means the name of God. When I look at the Wikipedia page it tells me this is the name of God in Hebrew.which it is.But then it tells me this is the name of God in Arabic or Islam. For what it's worth, Hashem is not the name of God in Judaism. More correctly, it is a euphemism or substitute for God's various names. Highly observant Jews only use the actual names during formal worship. Hashem literally means "the name" and is used as a substitute in more casual conversation. How do I find instances of a source being used

I have found a few instances of poor content in Wikipedia due to a source that is a recent reprint of a book written in 1926. It consequently is not up to date - but this is not immediately apparent, as it has been retitled. It is probably only rarely used, but if I could track down any instances so far undiscovered, I could flag them up with a template or find a better source - but I don't know how to search for a particular reference being used.

The book in question is A Short History of the Sailing Ship by Anderson, Romola; Anderson, R. C. publ. Dover Publications, 2003. ISBN 978-0486429885. It was published in 1926 under the title The Sailing-Ship: Six Thousand Years of History, originally published by Robert M. McBride & Company, New York. timestamps

Is there a way for me to see all timestamps in some sort of synchronized way? I am constantly getting confused about what is on the post, what is on the diff, what is at article history, what is at the contributions history. Everything at Wikipedia is in UTC; page histories, diffs, and talk page sigs are all posted by default in UTC. If you don't know your local relationship with UTC, may I recommend you go to your "Preferences" tab select the "Gadgets" section, and scroll down to "Appearance", there is an option that will display a running UTC clock in your top menu bar, next to the "Logout" link. However, all times in contribs, diffs, history, and sigs are still always in UTC. --Jayron32 18:17, 12 August 2022 (UTC)

In my prefs under "appearance" there is a section called "Time offset" and a place to set your local time. Math template: Formulas are not visible on iPad in Wikipedia app, in Dark Mode

I am using the Wikipedia app on iPad; preference set to "Dark Mode" (white text on black background). When viewing articles that contain formulas using this template: <math display=block> the forumlas are NOT VISIBLE. They are there, but the text is black (invisible on black background).

An example page with the problem is: Correlation function (quantum field theory). But I have found over 100 pages that show the problem. They all use <math display=block>.

If the math template is simply <math> (without display=block) everything is great in Dark Mode: text is white, as it should be.

There must be a bug in the Math template, something related to Web page formatting? CCS Style sheets? I tried reporting this issue on the Math template page, but there is no reply. Can you please escalate this? Maybe to the Wikipedia template experts?
