Alwan al Showaya (Arabic: علوان الشویع) was a singer from al-Ahwaz, and the inventor of the Arabic singing style “ʿAlwānī”, a term taken from his name. ʿAlwānī style went beyond the borders of Khuzestan, Iran, and was introduced in Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait.[1] Now the artists and the singers in those countries know ʿAlwānī as the name of ahwazian alwan. In this style, Alwan was playing the instrument rabab, which is a traditional construction of Khuzestan, and south of Iraq, was singing poems of famous poets from now and the past, and also was telling the names of poets as he was singing the poems.[2][3][4]

His life

Alwan was born in an Arabian village in Khuzestan. In his adolescence was deeply interested in tragic voices. Alwan initially constructed a rabab by using an empty gallon of oil and a few horse hairs, and then sang his tragic songs with music. In his adulthood he moved to the nearby city of Ahwaz with his wife and daughter, Shahla.

Alwan used in most of his songs, epic and ethical poems. In his songs he also invited the people to the courage, generosity, patience, forgiveness, relationship with relatives, fighting unjust and helping the poor people.[5][6]

ʿAlwānī Vocal style

After a period of time, this kind of music became popular with the public and also with other artists, and was named by its own inventor (Alwan) ʿAlwānī. In literature ʿAlwānī is referred to the poet and singer, where the poet and the singer is one person, too.

Today ʿAlwānī is refers to a song with peaceful and sad music, which is played only with “Rababa”. This style is considered as a public art of Arab people of Iran.[7][8][9]

Spread of ʿAlwānī

In the period of Sheikh Khazal, Arabic music in Khuzestan, thrived and became widespread. Khazal moreover than local Arab musician, invited bands from Arabic countries such as Iraq, Lebanon and Egypt, to his palaces, to run.

During the Pahlavi era Arabic music was stagnating. In solar Sixties, <Alwan abo-Shahla> appeared in Ahwaz, who knew the rows and singing instruments and any type of Arabic poems of people of khuzestan.[10]

ʿAlwānī is similar to the “Amiri” vocal style of Mazandaran. ʿAlwānī style went beyond the borders of Khuzestan, Iran, and was introduced in Iraq, Bahrain, and Kuwait. Now the artists and the singers in those countries know ʿalwānī as the name of <ahwazian ʿAlwān>. ʿAlwānī vocal style is placed in division of music, “rīfīy”. Now also in Khuzestan, many singers follow ʿAlwānī style of singing. “Hassaan Algezar” in “Shavoor” city of Susa, was one of the people who sang with this Style. “Alkhashabeh” bands also helped to promote it against the Vulgar music. ʿalwānī is a very sad local Arabic song, that is named by the name of its inventor Alwan.[11][12]
