This is a list of notable explosions, when they happened, and facts about each one.

18 July 1806 United Kingdom Malta Birgu c. 150–240 c. 100 1806 Birgu polverista explosion: A gunpowder magazine blew up, killing around 200 people and destroying part of the city's fortifications and many buildings.[2]

28 February 1844  United States Potomac River 6 16–20 A gun on board USS Princeton exploded during a demonstration, killing six people. The disaster endangered U.S. President John Tyler and killed several members of his Cabinet.
23 October 1844  United States near New Albany, Indiana 56–100+ Unknown Lucy Walker steamboat disaster: The Lucy Walker blows up in a boiler explosion on the Ohio River. The incident leads to the U.S. federal government establishing steamboat safety regulations, including the Steamboat Inspection Service.
14 July 1847  United Kingdom Faversham, England 18 Unknown Faversham guncotton explosion: A guncotton factory in Faversham, one of the British Empire's primary munitions centers, explodes and kills 18 workers.
6 October 1854  United Kingdom Newcastle upon Tyne and Gateshead, England c. 53 (in fire and explosion) c. 400–500 (in fire and explosion) Great fire of Newcastle and Gateshead: During a large fire a bonded warehouse used to store combustibles such as sulphur and nitrate of soda explodes, killing onlookers and destroying the neighborhood.
17 July 1856  United States Whitemarsh Township 59–67 c. 100 Great Train Wreck of 1856: Two steam trains traveling on the North Pennsylvania Railroad collide head-on, causing the deadliest railroad crash at that time.

6 December 1917  Canada Halifax, Nova Scotia 1,950 9,000 Halifax Explosion: The SS Mont Blanc, a French cargo ship loaded with high explosives sailing between New York City and Bordeaux, explodes after colliding with the Norwegian ship SS Imo. The disaster was the largest man-made explosion of the time and caused extensive damage to Richmond, Dartmouth, and the Miꞌkmaq neighborhood of Tufts Cove.

17 July 1944  United States Port Chicago, California 320 390+ Port Chicago disaster: Munitions intended for the Pacific Front of World War II explode when being loaded on a ship at a U.S. Navy magazine, killing hundreds of workers and numerous African Americans. One month later the unsafe conditions that caused the disaster lead to a mutiny.

Emergency vehicles were on the scene and the cause is being investigated; it is the peak season for fireworks in Italy because of the summer festivals there.[28]

18 November 2015  United Kingdom Cardiff 2 5 An explosion at a steelworks plant in Cardiff, South Wales, leaves two people dead and five injured.[33] On October 4, 2019 the Cardiff Crown Court heard testimony stating that a safety mechanism failed to shut down a heater which got too hot and then exploded. The court was told the workers were probably unaware the oil levels in the tank had dropped below the minimum safety level as the oil heater, which was still switched on, would have turned off but for an electrical failure. Celsa steelworks was fined £1.8m after the explosion which killed the two men.[34]
16 January 2016  Italy Arnasco 5 A suspected gas explosion in the Italian town of Arnasco kills at least five people.[35]
7 February 2016  United States Georgia 1 6 One person is killed and six others injured in an explosion at JCG Farms, an American feed mill near Atlanta, Georgia.[36] OSHA determined that excessive accumulation of grain dust in the hammer mill area ignited the fatal explosion. “It is tragic that despite wide industry awareness of these hazards, that some employers remain unaware of the common hazards of combustible dust,” Christi Griffin, OSHA's area director in the Atlanta-West Office, said in the statement. “This incident and this man’s death were preventable. JCG Farms needs to...assess the workplace for hazards and correct them to ensure worker safety.” [37]

1 June 2016  South Korea Seoul 4 10 A gas explosion at a subway construction site near the South Korean capital Seoul kills four workers and injures ten more.[39]
28 June 2016  Canada Mississauga 2 13 A huge explosion completely destroys a house and damages 24 others in Mississauga, Canada. At least one person is dead and 13 others are injured, according to Mississauga Fire and Emergency Services. Thousands of residents are forced to evacuate and many spend the night at a local community shelter.[40][41] On December 30, 2016 Peel Regional Police concluded the incident was a double suicide [42]
1 July 2016  Hungary 4 1 Four Hungarian Defence Force soldiers are killed and one is injured following an explosion at a military firing range in eastern Hungary.[43]
11 August 2016  United States Silver Spring 7 68 A gas building explosion at the Flower Branch Apartments, 8701 Arliss Street, in Silver Spring, Maryland. As a result of this accident, seven residents died, and 65 residents and three firefighters were transported to the hospital.[44] The blast has displaced more than 90 residents. Fire and rescue responded to "a smell of gas" on July 25. The cause of the explosion is being investigated.[45][46] In April 2019, the NTSB found that the blast was caused by failure of an indoor mercury service regulator with an unconnected vent line that allowed natural gas into the meter room where it accumulated and ignited from an unknown ignition source.[44]
11 August 2016  China Dangyang 22 4 2016 Dangyang explosion - At least 22 people are killed and four are injured following an explosion at a power plant in the city of Dangyang, Hubei province in central China.
