The Samsung Galaxy S4 is a smartphone manufactured by Samsung Electronics. It was announced in New York on March 14, 2013.[1][2] It is the successor to the Samsung Galaxy S III. It has new software features such as Smart Alerts, Smart Stay, and Smart scroll, a 13-megapixel back camera, and a 5-inch 1080p display.[1][2] The international version features an eight core Exynos 5 Octa processor with four active cores at any time. It will be available in late April 2013 on 327 networks worldwide and in 155 countries.[3][4]

Features

Software and services

The Galaxy S4 uses Google's Android mobile operating system with Samsung's custom TouchWiz "Nature UX" graphical user interface (GUI).

By employing the front-facing camera, the phone can pause a video automatically while the user looks away from the screen and can scroll a page if the user swipes their hand without touching the screen. Video capture and photo captures can use dual mode to use the front and rear cameras simultaneously.[5]

The Galaxy S4 supports High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) video decoding.[1][2][6]

Hardware and design

The screen features a 5-inch (130 mm) PenTile RGBG Full HD Super AMOLED screen with 441 pixels per inch.[7]

The S4 comes in two regional variants that differ primarily in the internal hardware:

Octa-core

The international S4 version has Samsung's Exynos 5 Octa system on a chip (SoC) processor, based on the big.LITTLE architecture from ARM, containing a 1.6 GHz quad-core Cortex-A15 and a 1.2 GHz quad-core Cortex-A7.[3][8] Each of the four faster cores is paired with a more power efficient core. Only one of each pair is active at any given time, with the active one in each pair being switched on-demand. This power saving core switching is hidden from the operating system and applications, and acts as a single quad-core processor to them.[9][8][10]

Quad-core

The United States version has a 1.9 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor.[9][11]
