From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The following is a timeline of rock music. Early rock music (and rock and roll) can be heard on the blues record in the 1920s and country record in the 1930s. Although blues was evolved at the end of the 19th century, the genre was popularity in the 1910s with published two songs titled "Dallas Blues" (written by Hart Wand and published in 1912) and "Saint Louis Blues" (written by W. C. Handy and published in 1914). Later, in 1922, the song "My Man Rocks Me (With One Steady Roll)" by Trixie Smith, many sources described it as the first rock and roll record because its secular lyrics refer to "rocking" and "rolling".

Although many blues and jazz performers used the term "rock and roll" in their songs at the time, but the genre was not widely used to describe a musical genre until the 1950s. Billboard columnist Maurie Orodenker used the term as early as 1942, while disc jockey Alan Freed helped make the phrase popular in the early 1950s.

Rock and roll is a subgenre of rock music that widely popularity in the United States in the 1950s and later commonly known as "rock music" in the United Kingdom in the 1960s. According to many rock historians, the first rock and roll record are variants. Jackie Brenston's "Rocket 88" strongly the first rock and roll record, but not all of historians describe the song as the first. The Dominoes' "Sixty Minute Man" also nominated as the first. The first rock and roll record that reached #1 on the pop charts is Bill Haley's "Rock Around the Clock". According to other historians, several songs by Elvis Presley also nominated as the first. They also selected Chuck Berry's "Maybellene" and Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" as the first while these songs was released in the mid-50s.
