As the original reviewer appears to have lost interest and as many concerns remain to be addressed, I have taken over the review and aim to close it - oe way or the other in the next few days. The lack of citations, apparent original research and passages of un-attributed commentary on his work mean that there is a lot of work to be done to get this up to scratch. I shall leave detailed comments on the review page within the next 24 hours. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 06:55, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

Ram Loevy pictures

Danny, perhaps I did not make myself clear enough. Unless Mr Loevy actually took the photographs, (which would seem unlikely in several cases) the copyright is not his to assign. Please read WP:Image use policy#Adding images. The copyright belongs to the photographer. Owning a picture is not enough. It is the photographer who must provide sufficient evidence to Wikipedia via the OTRS system. Details can be found at Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. The work must be freely licensed, it cannot be licensed for use on Wikipedia alone:

To use copyrighted material on Wikipedia, it is not enough that we have permission to use it on Wikipedia alone. That's because Wikipedia itself states all its material may be used by anyone, for any purpose. So we have to be sure all material is in fact licensed for that purpose, whoever provided it.

To do this, we must often email or contact the copyright holders and ask them to allow us to use it under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) or a CC-BY-SA-compatible license and, if possible, also the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts). See Wikipedia:Copyrights for more.

The screenshots may be allowable under Wikipedia's fair use policy, more about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content. However you have to specifically state that it is a non free image and what its use will be (non-free use rationale). You can ask questions about this at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. –– Jezhotwells (talk) 23:27, 16 March 2010 (UTC)

I just saw this discussion thread. The topic has been popular in recent discussions about how to encourage more media creators to use Wikimedia. We have to make this process easier! If a photographer has assigned all rights for a photo to someone else, under contract or otherwise, we don't need to throw up additional bureaucratic hurdles to image licensing. Modern primary sources and Loevy

I've posted some of my thoughts about how to share information gotten directly from subjects of articles, or owners/directors/organizers of the subjects of articles [a group, a work of art, &c]. These people are sometimes valid primary sources (and like all primary sources, potentially biased, only one source among many). SJ+ 00:42, 18 March 2010 (UTC)

Yue/Cantonese

Hi Danny,

There have been months (years) of debate on which article should be at Cantonese, and what to call iso3=yue. Cantonese has been stable for months now, and Angr recently closed a request for move on iso3=yue, moving it to Yue Chinese. Several editors are adamantly opposed to the move, and have attempted to get it reverted; one admin refused, but today a second, User:RegentsPark, reverted. It would seem from his comment that he did not see the move decision in the archives, but only read the counter-proposal on the current talk page, a discussion which petered out two weeks ago. Angr's decision at Talk:Yue_Chinese/Archive9#Move; you can see his defense of his decision on his own talk page, March archive.

As you're the only admin besides Angr at Wikiproject Languages, and I see have been around a long time (though I've surprisingly never bumped into you), I thought I should let you know, in case you wish to weigh in on either side or we need yet another to help resolve this. kwami (talk) 07:38, 23 April 2010 (UTC)

Old Attlee redirect

Hi Danny, sorry to bother you with a Blast From the Past! I'm thinking of nominating Clement , 1st Earl Attlee of Walthamstow, Viscount Prestwood Attlee, which I think you created, at WP:RFD. The rationale is that it's not useful and even if it were the extra space after "Clement" kills it stone dead. I just wanted to check that you had no objections, that there wasn't some logic I had missed, etc. Thanks and best wishes DBaK (talk) 12:49, 13 May 2010 (UTC)

The article Estero has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Since Wikipedia is not a dictionary, it foloows that it certainly is not a Spanish dictionary.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Beeblebrox (talk) 23:38, 19 September 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Dilute

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Dilute requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a band or musician, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. MikeWazowski (talk) 21:13, 23 July 2011 (UTC)

2008 Mouse Deer post

Hello Danny I am Irrgang. I don't know how to message back and forth, never done it before on Wikipedia, but I am trying to track something down here. You are the oldest edit I could find on the Mouse deer web page that referred to the tragulus kanchil species of mouse deer. The animal shown in the picture for this deer is short legged and short eared. I have a photograph that my father took of me in 1957, when I was six years old, of me in a neighbor's kitchen with a kanchil that they had just caught in our village, who was close to full grown and probably from the photograph is perhaps 15 to 18 inches tall, but with LONG ears and LONG legs. This was in Pekanbaru, Central Sumatra. Please reply to me via email at mike@irrgang.net and I can email you the photograph. Irrgang (talk) 17:25, 30 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi! It seems you recently created an unreferenced biography of a living person: Dror Moreh. The community has decided that all new biographies of living persons must contain a reliable source that supports at least one statement made about the person in the article as per our verifiability policy. Please add references as soon as possible. Thanks! --LaraBot (talk) 00:12, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

The article Dror Moreh has been proposed for deletion because it appears to have no references. Under Wikipedia policy, this newly created biography of a living person will be deleted unless it has at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't be offended. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. -- Patchy1 REF THIS BLP 11:07, 2 February 2013 (UTC)

Stripmalls, et al

Since several people have contacted me privately about an article in the New York Times about whether the Wikimedia Foundation offices in St. Pete were ever located in a strip mall, I can say emphatically that they were not. The author of the article made a simple mistake. She investigated the address of the WMF in St. Pete, which was a UPS box, and the UPS store was located in a strip mall on 2nd Ave South. The Kahwa coffee shop is next door to that (though it did not exist during my time at the WMF. That office was on 2nd Street at the corner of 2nd Avenue South, near the Publix. The actually WMF offices were also on 2nd Street, but on the corner of 2nd Avenue North in a rather nice building with the name Palais Royale (the e in Royale being a sad attempt at sounding French). The actual address of the office was not given out for any number of reasons, not least of which was security. Danny (talk) 18:48, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Your admin status

Hello. I'm a steward. A new policy regarding the removal of "advanced rights" (administrator, bureaucrat, etc.) was adopted by community consensus recently. According to this policy, the stewards are reviewing administrators' activity on wikis with no inactivity policy.

You meet the inactivity criteria (no edits and no log actions for 2 years) on yiwiktionary, where you are an administrator and bureaucrat. Since yiwiktionary does not have its own administrators' rights review process, the global one applies.

If you want to keep your rights, you should inform the community of the wiki about the fact that the stewards have sent you this information about your inactivity. If the community has a discussion about it and then wants you to keep your rights, please contact the stewards at m:Stewards' noticeboard, and link to the discussion of the local community, where they express their wish to continue to maintain the rights, and demonstrate a continued requirement to maintain these rights.

We stewards will evaluate the responses. If there is no response at all after approximately one month, we will proceed to remove your administrative rights. In cases of doubt, we will evaluate the responses and will refer a decision back to the local community for their comment and review. If you have any questions, please contact us on m:Stewards' noticeboard.

Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Speedy deletion nomination of Ta-Tu

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Ta-Tu, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to have no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent. If the page you created was a test, please use the sandbox for any other experiments you would like to do.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi. The 18th edition of Ethnologue just came out, and if we divide up our language articles among us, it won't take long to update them. I would appreciate it if you could help out, even if it's just a few articles (5,000 articles is a lot for just me), but I won't be insulted if you delete this request.

A largely complete list of articles to be updated is at Category:Language articles citing Ethnologue 17. The priority articles are in Category:Language articles with old Ethnologue 17 speaker data. These are the 10% that have population figures at least 25 years old.

Probably 90% of the time, Ethnologue has not changed their figures between the 17th and 18th editions, so all we need to do is change "e17" to "e18" in the reference (ref) field of the language info box. That will change the citation for the artcle to the current edition. Please put the data in the proper fields, or the info box will flag it as needing editorial review. The other relevant fields are "speakers" (the number of native speakers in all countries), "date" (the date of the reference or census that Ethnologue uses, not the date of Ethnologue!), and sometimes "speakers2". Our convention has been to enter e.g. "1990 census" when a census is used, as other data can be much older than the publication date. Sometimes a citation elsewhere in the article depends on the e17 entry, in which case you will need to change "name=e17" to "name=e18" in the reference tag (assuming the 18th edition still supports the cited claim).

Remember, we want the *total* number of native speakers, which is often not the first figure given by Ethnologue. Sometimes the data is too incompatible to add together (e.g. a figure from the 1950s for one country, and a figure from 2006 for another), in which case it should be presented that way. That's one use for the "speakers2" field. If you're not sure, just ask, or skip that article.

Data should not be displayed with more than two, or at most three, significant figures. Sometimes it should be rounded off to just one significant figure, e.g. when some of the component data used by Ethnologue has been approximated with one figure (200,000, 3 million, etc.) and the other data has greater precision. For example, a figure of 200,000 for one country and 4,230 for another is really just 200,000 in total, as the 4,230 is within the margin of rounding off in the 200,000. If you want to retain the spurious precision of the number in Ethnologue, you might want to use the {{sigfig}} template. (First parameter in this template is for the data, second is for the number of figures to round it off to.)

Dates will often need to be a range of all the country data in the Ethnologue article. When entering the date range, I often ignore dates from countries that have only a few percent of the population, as often 10% or so of the population isn't even separately listed by Ethnologue and so is undated anyway.

If Ethnologue does not provide a date for the bulk of the population, just enter "no date" in the date field. But if the population figure is undated, and hasn't changed between the 17th & 18th editions of Ethnologue, please leave the ref field set to "e17", and maybe add a comment to keep it so that other editors don't change it. In cases like this, the edition of Ethnologue that the data first appeared in may be our only indication of how old it is. We still cite the 14th edition in a couple dozen articles, so our readers can see that the data is getting old.

The articles in the categories linked above are over 90% of the job. There are probably also articles that do not currently cite Ethnologue, but which we might want to update with the 18th edition. I'll need to generate another category to capture those, probably after most of the Ethnologue 17 citations are taken care of.

Jump in at the WP:LANG talk page if you have any comments or concerns. Thanks for any help you can give!

If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. You are receiving this message because you are listed at Wikipedia:Bureaucrats#Former bureaucrats. Writ Keeper pointed out that these users were not directly notified of the community discussion ending August 2015, where consensus was reached to remove the bureaucrat permissions of users who have not participated in bureaucrat activity for three years.

As of 1 October 2015, any former bureaucrat who has not participated in bureaucrat activity for three years that wishes their bureaucrat permissions restored will need to request reinstatement at RFB.

If you intend to return to bureaucrat activity, please request restoration of permissions before 1 October 2015 or three years passes since your last bureaucrat activity, whichever is later.

To assist with the implementation of this requirement, please see Wikipedia:Bureaucrat activity. Modeled after Wikipedia:Inactive administrators and similar to that process, the log page will be created on 1 September 2015. Bureaucrats who have not met the activity requirements as of that date will be notified by email (where possible) and on their talk page to advise of the pending removal.

If the notified user does not return to bureaucrat activity and the permissions are removed, they will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFB. Removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon the affected user in any way.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. –xenotalk 20:53, 18 August 2015 (UTC)

Ways to improve Mordechai Anielewicz

Hi, I'm Ongmianli. Danny, thanks for creating Mordechai Anielewicz!

I've just tagged the page, using our page curation tools, as having some issues to fix. Thanks for working so hard on this page! This is a wonderful start, but a lot of the material doesn't pertain directly to the topic, and reads a bit too much like a biography. It could be more concise.

The tags can be removed by you or another editor once the issues they mention are addressed. If you have questions, you can leave a comment on my talk page. Or, for more editing help, talk to the volunteers at the Teahouse.
