October promotion question[edit]

Hi -- I noticed the other day that John Raymond science fiction magazines, which you promoted in October, wasn't listed at WP:WBFAN; I thought this edit would fix it but it doesn't appear to have done so. Looking at the October log I think the problem is just that it was never added. Is that the only issue? Or are there other places it needs to be added? I've put it in now and will need to adjust the FA stats page too; as to the promotion bot doing its thing at this late stage (which I assume will lead to WBFAN getting updated), we might be in the realm of black magic there -- Hawkeye...? Update on me and Vicksburg campaign inactivity[edit]

@Hog Farm, BusterD, Kges1901, Djmaschek, and TwoScars: Except for two small edits on September 1, I have been offline since August 16, just after I finished the end of the Civil War issue, left a message here and volunteered to help on the Vicksburg campaign project. I thought I should give you an explanation for my absence and lack of activity though I hesitate to write about such things. I know you are all busy and this is off topic. I am truly unhappy about not being able to keep contributing regularly recently and I do hope to return soon. I have been in a quagmire of seemingly never ending health problems. I had the injury to my knee and thigh, previously mentioned, then a rotator cuff impingement. I became weak with other symptoms and was hardly able to continue physical therapy. Then I had a surgery (different problem) in early October, digestive issues and caught a bacterial infection - in the hospital no doubt. I have perhaps recovered from that after a course of antibiotics but I am now having some worrisome recurring symptoms. I have had trouble keeping up with everyday activities most days and have some catching up to do. Holiday preparations, a few doctor visits and restarting physical therapy are also on the immediate agenda. Nonetheless, hope springs eternal. I have a few small edits to make to my book list and perhaps elsewhere. This is my main hobby and I want to get back to it in a more meaningful way, including helping finish work on the Vicksburg campaign. I hope I can do that soon. I also hope all of you are doing well. I agree with BusterD. RL is much more important than Wikipedia, and you cannot neglect your health (or your family). I had to do PT in 2019 to get my wrist to bend after breaking it in three places. I recommend doing the PT as early in the day as possible—get it over with for the day. You may find that you like exercising. I currently work out three times per week—first thing in the morning, before breakfast. Get a good workout (or PT), but do not go so hard that you do not feel like working out again. Relax, enjoy the holidays, do not spend all day in front of a computer. Wikipedia will be here when you are ready. TwoScars (talk) 15:44, 26 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Donner60: - sorry for the late reply; I just got back from a trip to rural Louisiana visiting family (I got to visit Vicksburg along the way, as well as Jenkins Ferry, Mansfield LA, and Fort Southerland). I second what Buster and TwoScars say about health, please take care of yourself before anything on-wiki. I let a back injury fester from late 2018 to early 2020 and live to regret putting that off most days (and I'm in my early 20s and according to the doctor shouldn't be that messed up in the back and neck).
I started on User:Hog Farm/Siege of Vicksburg in October and got to where I'm ready for the orbat section, but life got hectic in November and I haven't gotten back to it. Any commentary about what's been written so far would be very appreciated. (I probably won't get back to this until a few weeks. I borrowed a book about tinclads from a local library and want to try to get some more articles resourced from their current state of being just DANFS copies before the book needs to go back in mid-December). Thanks for the reply and best wishes. I hope you can do something to relieve and reverse your back and neck pain. I have had some chiropractic work for my back and neck. It can be a relief, and in some cases, not just temporary. I had a back problem a few years ago which could have resulted in surgery. The chiropractor relieved the problem. The orthopedic surgeon was at least mildly surprised. Some insurance can cover chiropractic treatment, at least for specific injuries or problems.
As I wrote above, I hope I can have more time and energy to get back to more regular Wikipedia writing and editing soon. I think it would be too optimistic for me to expect to do much for the rest of the year considering the holidays, catching up on a few things and a few more doctor visits and physical therapy.
I have enough books on Vicksburg to do some reasonably thorough research and with any luck to comment on or contribute to the articles. I have read part of the short "Siege of Jackson, Mississippi" book. I think I at least have a grasp of the preliminary moves up to the start of the siege. From there, it appears to be straightforward enough. For the next few days, I plan to catch up with listing some books that I bought earlier in the year.

Highway 8[edit]

Just so it doesn't get lost in the archiving, I'm going to copy it here: Since WP:PR is kind of a dead horse, do you perhaps have any recommendations where I can get someone to make these kind of audits (particularly that outside-the-box take that is scrupulous of refs, which I'd look at and say "oh, yeah, common denominator"). @Floydian: - Unfortunately, there's not a consistent place to go to that I can think of off the top of my head. The average peer review doesn't go into sources like that, and even many FACs don't get that thorough of reviews. I just make a habit of looking into sources when I can when reviewing FACs, and found a few pagination issues early on so I kept going on Highway 8. Normally I'd offer to go through Highway 8 when I have time (thanks to the Wikipedia Library, I can access most of the sources used), but I'm fighting a pinched nerve in my neck right now and am trying to finish up a userspace draft before I have to return a key book to the library on Friday, so I'm unfortunately not in a position to look over Highway 8 in the short term. Buidhe or Gog the Mild may have ideas on where to go for something like this. Sorry if this doesn't make much sense or isn't helpful, but that nerve is causing enough problems this evening it's hard for me to focus on writing coherently. Citation bot solution[edit]

Citation bot is making on the order of one million edits per year, usually in large batches, and checking two or three times as many without editing the articles. 2022 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2022 cup for 28,302 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 80/day. There was one Gold Award (5000+ reviews), 11 Silver (2000+), 28 Iron (360+) and 39 more for the 100+ barnstar. Rosguill led again for the 4th year by clearing 49,294 redirects. Minimum deletion time: The previous WP:NPP guideline was to wait 15 minutes before tagging for deletion (including draftification and WP:BLAR). Due to complaints, a consensus decided to raise the time to 1 hour. To illustrate this, very new pages in the feed are now highlighted in red. (As always, this is not applicable to attack pages, copyvios, vandalism, etc.)

New draftify script: In response to feedback from AFC, the The Move to Draft script now provides a choice of set messages that also link the creator to a new, friendly explanation page. The script also warns reviewers if the creator is probably still developing the article. The former script is no longer maintained. Please edit your edit your common.js or vector.js file from User:Evad37/MoveToDraft.js to User:MPGuy2824/MoveToDraft.js

Discussions with the WMF The PageTriage open letter signed by 444 users is bearing fruit. The Growth Team has assigned some software engineers to work on PageTriage, the software that powers the NewPagesFeed and the Page Curation toolbar. WMF has submitted dozens of patches in the last few weeks to modernize PageTriage's code, which will make it easier to write patches in the future. This work is helpful but is not very visible to the end user. For patches visible to the end user, volunteers such as Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have been writing patches for bug reports and feature requests. The Growth Team also had a video conference with the NPP coordinators to discuss revamping the landing pages that new users see.

And I realized that I hadn't seen you around my regular haunts in a while. Just wanted to check in with you and give you belated holiday good wishes and hope that 2023 will be a good year for you.

It looks like these days you are spending your time creating and improving articles rather than on admin tasks or the deletion side of the project. Can't fault you for bringing up the quality of articles on the encyclopedia, I'm sure that it leaves you with more positive feelings than blocking vandals and deleting bad articles! Thanks for checking in! Yeah, I don't do as much of the blocking/deleting as I used to. Update: health, Wikipedia edits[edit]

@BusterD, Kges1901, Djmaschek, and TwoScars: I have been doing some reading to help me write an introduction about the Vicksburg campaign for the Siege of Jackson article. I looked at the John Alexander McClernand article as part of this. I found it had a citation needed template and was incomplete in some respects. It failed B class some time ago due to lack of citations. It has taken me more time to add citations and some text to make it a better article than I thought it would. I even bought a used copy of the cited McClernand biography. This editing, which is not yet quite finished, has contributed to my lack of progress otherwise.

My time is still limited by ongoing health/physical condition issues - though most of the worst problems seem to be fixed or at least improved. However, I now also have low thyroid hormone, which can cause fatigue, confusion and a few other symptoms. This likely has been caused by x-rays, MRI and radioactive iodine tests in the last few months. Medication adjustments are supposed to overcome this. I have eye surgery on one eye next week but that should result in slowing me down for a week or less, I am told. A second surgery likely will be 5 or 6 weeks thereafter. It does seem to be one thing after another.

We, likely mostly you at your work rate, will get the done eventually. I am concerned I might either end up being less help or less timely than I intended to be, though we know that real life sometimes intervenes. Donner60 (talk) 02:02, 21 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I hope you get to feeling better - that sounds like a rough accumulation of health concerns. I'm going to be taking an informal wikibreak due to work stress, clinical depression, and general exhaustion (I had COVID after Christmas and am still fighting the fatigue). If anyone wants to work on it, there's a half-finished rewrite of the siege of Vicksburg article linked at the top of my talkpage, but it'll be mid-February at the earliest before I can get back to that. I did create us a bit of additional work - I wrote up Steele's Greenville expedition awhile back, which is yet to be integrated into the articles for the campaign or General Steele. Hello @Donner60:—It will get better. Your physical issues sound bad, and I do not need to know details, but keep up your PT and remember that Wikipedia is only your hobby. My name of "TwoScars" comes from the two surgical scars on my face. I had some "dark" times, but always noticed there was someone with worse problems than mine. Today I'm pretty happy with my physical condition. If you (or @Hog Farm:) get depressed, I have found that interaction with nature is useful. Simply seeing nature on early morning walks appears to have many benefits. We even added a bird feeder years ago (Yes, I am becoming more like my parents!). Sourcing thoughts from talk page stalkers requested[edit]

So in most of my Civil War articles, I've found that officers are generally only referred to by their rank in the first point they're being referred to in the cited source. When asked to provide people's ranks at GA/ACR/FAC, I've consistently just pulled the ranks from a biographical register, instead of trying to hunt down the singular page in a tome where the fellow is introduced by rank (and then not footnoting the biographical register, as it only supported one or two words). An example would be Major General John George Walker's troops reached Richmond on June 6, and Taylor planned a three-pronged strike for the next day from Battle of Lake Providence. If you have trouble with any particular date of promotion of a Civil War general to a general officer grade, let me know. I have both of Ezra J. Warner's books, Generals in Blue and Generals in Gray, which usually, if not always, gives dates of promotions. I also have the Eichers' book Civil War High Commands, which is probably the most comprehensive source since it also includes brevet generals and "might have beens". The might have beens were officers often identified as generals but who never commissioned. Turner Ashby is an example. I have two other potential sources: Brevet Brigadier Generals in Blue, which curiously enough also has sketches for brevet major generals and Who Was Who in the Civil War by Sifakis. I wrote the list List of American Civil War generals (Acting Confederate) in order to account for the Confederate might have beens. Necessary Level for Articles in Vicksburg Campaign?[edit]

It occurred to me that I am not sure about the level that each article in the topic needs to have for the Vicksburg campaign article to reach GA or higher. I guess B would be a bare minimum but perhaps at least GA would be needed and higher if the campaign article is to be higher. I could not readily find the answer. Please let me know so that I can work toward the appropriate levels and ask for the proper review on any that I finally handle to a conclusion rather than just make a contribute to. Thanks. @Donner60: - I guess it depends on what we're going for. If we're wanting to bring them all to decent shape, then B would be the minimum. If we're wanting to go for a WP:Good topic, then everything will need to be at least GA. If there's a source you don't have that you need to get ahold of, I'm not too far from Wilson's Creek National Battlefield and can see if the library there has anything.
My next steps are probably going to be to clean up Battle of Grand Gulf and Battle of Big Black River Bridge as part of the cleanup of my old work. Afterwards will probably be Battle of Snyder's Bluff as I've got plenty of sources for that. Hog Farm Talk 05:50, 11 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sandy, I had listed it, but then removed it because between RL, Wikipedia:Good article reassessment/Battle of Gettysburg/1, and the air force plane crash FAR, I don't see myself being able to getting around to resolving the problems quick enough to warrant holding up the GAR process on that one. I do still intend to try to fix it, but can GAN it myself later if I think the end result is good enough. If practical, I would appreciate it if that one isn't PDEL'd - I have full intentions of going through it with a fine-tooth comb, and having the existing article structure in front of me will help a little bit in re-writing. @Eddie891: It's not in the census anymore, which IIRC generally only records populations for CDPs and formal municipalities. As to finding old census records, I don't know where those would be found, and a few attempts at locating such information just now were unsuccessful. Northern courage in Middle-earth[edit]

Hi there, there is a new IP editor over at Northern courage in Middle-earth who has tried to delete the article, and failing that, to empty out much of its content (17,643 bytes, to be precise), followed by further edits which certainly seem disruptive to me (the article was/is in the Good Article Nomination queue). I was unfortunately out today so haven't been able to reply in technical detail, but they ignored my placeholder "I'll get back to you asap" and continued with major edits. Any help on the article's talk page (or if need be on their talk page) would be much appreciated. I'm not asking you to side with me (though I would value your opinion on the article), but it would be nice to be able to discuss the matter rather than have major edit-warring.   • I've left a much abbreviated "in popular culture" section and only included those items that had wikipedia pages/notability. It doesn't make it right, but I see the Robert E. Lee page has an "in popular culture" section
  • I left the 10 things you didn't know about lost reference for Matthew Fox - it has an author listed and a publication date. It's not a blog. I don't know why it would not be considered RS.
