George E. Allens

It seems very unlikely that George E. Allen and George E. Allen (Maine coach) are the same person; I don't think the Cumberland Allen had any connection with sports after his college career, and in the mid-40s he was busy with political jobs in Washington. Standards for coach navboxes

Sir, you recently edited four coach navboxes I have created in the past:

• Template:Anderson Ravens football coach navbox
• Template:California (PA) Vulcans football coach navbox
• Template:Georgetown Tigers football coach navbox
• Template:Saint Francis Cougars football coach navbox

In their original form, the navboxes contained information about the various coaches, including full names and periods of time coaching at the school. Your edits deleted all first names and all coaching periods. You also deleted markers I had inserted for periods of time where the coach's name was not yet known or confirmed.

Is there a standard for coach navboxes that has been adopted? I know your edits make these navboxes consistent with some others that I have seen, but my editing preference was to include this additional, useful information. Question - can IP edits be converted to a registered user?

I agree with your stance about mandatory registration to be able to sign-in. On occasion, however, I have accidentally made edits before I logged in as a user. Is there some way I can replace these IP edits with edits attributed to my username? I am willing to delete all known IP edits. Copyright cleanup process

Given your note at User:TheLeftorium, I wanted to explain to you a little bit about how WP:CCIs work. These are opened only when it is confirmed that a contributor has placed copyrighted content into multiple articles (or uploaded multiple copyrighted images). At that point, when an article has been identified as having copied content, generally all contributions by the CCI subject who placed the content are removed. If the article was created by the CCI subject, the article is blanked and listed at WP:CP. While Wikipedia:Copyright violations authorizes the blanket removal of all content added by contributors that have been verified to have placed copyrighted content into multiple articles, we try to make sure that at least some problem exists before tagging. We do not have sufficient manpower to check to see if copyright violations exist in every section of the article. The point of the process board is to identify and clean copyright concerns from multiple point infringers as quickly as possible. There are literally thousands of articles waiting review, and when copyright is confirmed, the article is presumed to be tainted.

You can best assist by crafting new text for articles blanked and listed at WP:CP, including Kevin Kiesel, as directed at the template blanking the articles. If there are sections that you feel are not copyright concerns, you may reproduce them in the that new version if you are the sole contributor of that text, but please note on the article's talk page why you feel this text is not an issue and please be careful. At this point, future violations are likely to lead to an extended block. If that content may have been copied from a different source, it would be better to replace it as well.

If new content is not proposed for such articles, there is a very good chance that they will be deleted by whichever administrator is working WP:CP on the day they come due. Even if some of the content is not a copyright violation, the article in entirety represents an unauthorized derivative work.

While I'm here, you'll probably have noted that feedback at ANI supported the removal of your rollback. I am willing, however, to restore this to you if you will use it only to clean up blatantly disruptive edits as it is intended. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 21:59, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

When copyright violations are extensive and foundational, we do not have the option of retaining the articles, as the US law that governs Wikipedia includes among derivative works those works that consist of "editorial revisions, annotations, elaborations, or other modifications" of copyrighted work (17 U.S.C. § 101). This is one of the reasons that the template instructs that the articles need to be rewritten in temporary space linked from the article's face. The old versions have to go.

{{Copyvio}} is, as it instructs, only meant to be removed by administrators and OTRS agents. With several of the articles wherein User:TheLeftorium tagged limited areas, I don't see your removal of the template as a major concern. I have gone behind you to delete the older versions. But when the entire article is blanked, you do not have the option of removing it, even if you believe that the material you are exposing is infringement free, as you did at Kirk Jellerson. As I explained above, you can incorporate in your proposed replacements material that you believe is not a concern, though you should explain why. Most reviewers of CCI — if not User:TheLeftorium — only take time to verify that some duplication has occurred and do not continue searching for other sources after duplication is verified. You have since at least your first warning of January 2008 been violating Wikipedia's copyright policy. Accordingly, somebody else needs to review that text before it is restored to article space.

I have reblanked and will relist Kirk Jellerson. You are welcome to draft a new version of the article in temporary space.

This version of Kirk Jellerson is completely copyright free. I still don't understand how an infobox and basic, uniquely written four-sentence paragraph are going to be tagged as a violation. It will take immeasurable more work to re-create the article (of what is shown in the link provided) than it would be for you to just remove the copyrighted part and move on with it. If you think it takes immeasurable more work to copy and paste into a new edit window (which is conveniently linked from the template's face) than to selectively delete an article, it may be because you're not familiar with selective deletion, which is a multistage process. Moving the temporary page into article space is also a multistage process, but one with fewer steps. I'm willing to work to help clean up these copyright problems (as, for example, with Woodbury Public Schools), but the process has evolved for a reason and if you have interest in these articles you need to work within that process to preserve them. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 21:56, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Having said that, I do need to be sure that you realize that you can only copy content on Wikipedia that you have yourself authored unless you provide proper attribution. I see that on 20 April 2008, you "moved" the article Arkansas Razorbacks basketball to Arkansas Razorbacks men's basketball by copying and pasting the content of one into another. Since Wikipedia's contributors do not relinquish copyright to their contributions, but merely liberally license them for reuse, we do have to give credit. In such cases, it is necessary to move the page rather than paste contents; if there is a history at the new title that prevents the page being moved, you can ask for an administrator's assistance at Wikipedia:Requested moves. If you are splitting contents or duplicating them from one article to another, you can attribute in the edit summary; see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia for more. --Moonriddengirl ^(talk) 22:08, 3 March 2010 (UTC)

Haha yeah what are the chances right? Let's put it this way – I don't think anyone (myself included) expects W&M to win, but we have already beaten two ACC schools on the road this season (incl. conference champ Maryland, whose only home loss was to us). This a very down year for UNC, but even that being the case they're still heavily favored against us. Big Ten Player of the Year edit (Bobby Jackson)

I teach a class on the history of college basketball and a number of my students have inaccurately cited this page. The reason for this is because, although there is a footnote it is a very small and distant reference. I left the footnote so visitors to the page could see who originally won the award before it was vacated. With my edits I was trying to mirror what the Big Ten actually reports (see the footnote you mentioned). The Big Ten doesn't even list who originally won it, they simply say it is a vacated award. I would appreciate, for clarity and accuracies sake if we could change it to mirror the official results of the award as reported by the Big Ten. Thank you. Independent/MEAC POY

I don't know of anywhere that logs the Division I Independent POY anywhere. Since these players aren't affiliated with a conference there is no media guide to consult. I know David Holston of Chicago State won last year. As for the MEAC, their record keeping is spotty. You have probably looked at their media guide that only shows All-Conference teams with no note of POY. The SWAC has a similar problem. Their media guide goes back about 20 years, but they had POYs before that (Avery Johnson won twice but isn't cited in the guide). Sorry. Rikster2 (talk) 12:05, 15 April 2010 (UTC)

I have been debating with folks at WP:HOCKEY about navboxes. Can you please make sure that I am representing the college basketball position on the policy User:TonyTheTiger/sandbox/Hockey mafia issue correctly.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 17:24, 18 April 2010 (UTC)

What you have so far seems fine. My one question would be, what is considered a "notable" template? Without knowing your definition yet, I would recommend adding {{College Basketball Awards}} in that spot. But if your objective is for some sort of individualized navbox then I understand why that wouldn't be appropriate. I read your entire debate with the wp:hockey guys. I have to admit, they are a stubborn bunch. I agree with all of your arguments made, and practically none of theirs, but if there is any chance at all you're going to "win" the debate, you're going to have to call in all cavalry from every single sports WikiProject that encourages navboxes to help you out in the consensus-building time. It's clear that wp:hockey members are fiercely loyal and dependent on one another to defend their ideas from all other conventionality. This debate is focussed on templates for bio articles. I do think that a WP user should be able to expect consistency on athletes. That is a goal that should be worked towards. What about women's college basketball (or is your user page for men's sports only)? They have the Naismith and Wooden Awards as well as the Wade Trophy and {{NCAA Tournament MOP}} for MVPs. They've got {{USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year}} and maybe {{USBWA National Player of the Year – Women}} for Other Awards. It just so happens that a pretty sizeable majority of the hockey project agrees that the templates Tony is pushing are of minimal value. I think we've articulated quite well why we oppose those templates. The only response I seem to get is "this is the way other sports do it". There are a lot of things that the NFL and MLB projects do that many of us on the hockey side find ridiculous, but we've generally left those projects to organize articles under their banner as they see fit. I am giving up on getting immediate agreement from WP:HOCKEY. I think the way to go is to get immediate consensus on the sports with long-established professional leagues with high attendance and television contracts. I am honored you would consider nominating me, I really appreciate it. Adminship isn't something I particularly desire for a couple reasons. The biggest is that I enjoy editing and creating new articles too much; if my time had to be spent sorting out disagreements and working the behind-the-scenes technical parts of WP, I would have far less time to do what I signed onto WP to do. Another compelling reason for me to stay away is that I am too hot-headed to be an admin. I take things personally that I shouldn't and generally react to things before thinking about them. Sometimes school navboxes contain pages that don't fit nicely into any subgroup, and just as often these pages are only tangentially related through their relationship with the school. Subgroups called "Other" (or, in the change I just made to W&J, "Related") are acceptable to use. It's not ideal, but for the lack of a better nomenclature it has to suffice. Sherman White

Yes, go for it - White's story is a good one and he deserves an article. If you search him in Google News archives you can read some of the contemporary news articles about him. He was actually disqualified from All-American status (and from the offcial NCAA statistical leader boards) when the scanbdal broke, but the Sporting News had already mailed out their issue naming him National Player of the Year - which is why he won TSN NPOY in 1951 but wasn't an All-American. I created the All-American list to write those articles, but realistically I can't do them all. Jay Handlan

Hi. Regarding Jay Handlan, I don't think that the basketball player and the West Virgina elector are the same person. According to the Political Graveyard, if you click on the 1928 following Handland's name (which leads here) you'll see that it leads to a 1928 election - which means I think that he was running in that election, not that he was born in that year. Obviously he didn't run in an election the year he was born, so I think that these are two different people. Canadian Paul 15:41, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

DYK for Sherman White

Hi, I just followed the "paper trail" for you to tell you what happened. The hook was approved as-is on July 13 (see here[2]). On July 16, when the hook was put into the queue, another editor pulled it and posted a discussion for it on the DYK talk page (click on Wikipedia talk:Did you know#BLP?), asking for a different hook. One of the rules of DYK (and Wikipedia) is not to libel living persons, which this hook pretty much does. I know it's true, but it's still libel. It was put back on the suggestions page, and on July 17, a different editor suggested the alternate hook, which was then approved by yet another editor.

Usually the page creator is contacted when there's a problem with the hook. But since your hook was initially approved, you were never brought into the loop.

At this point, you have two choices. Either leave the hook alone, and let it appear on the main page in about 12 hours' time. Or complain right now on Wikipedia talk:Did you know, and offer some kind of solution to the problem — another alternate hook?

Thanks for the explanation. I'm less frustrated now that I know there was a change due to DYK guidelines and not due to some editor thinking his is the "better" hook. It's a little annoying that the hook I wrote can't be used even though it's 100% true and 100% verifiable, but at this point I'll just let the new hook go through unopposed. Nevermind, forget that question. I misinterpreted what your edits were. However, I do have one concern regarding your edits. You are constantly taking new, unedited usernames and putting a space in them to "start user page" (just a few examples: [4][5][6][7]). User pages are for the users themselves to edit, nobody else is supposed to touch them. If they want their user pages to remain redlinked and unedited it's their prerogative, not yours or mine or anyone else's. The "start user pages" you are referring to were done in conjunction with some welcome messages I posted on new user talk pages probably within the last 48 hours. I also put a "." in the user page to start the page. I have been doing this when I welcome new users because Wikipedia has a glitch - unless users actually have a user page, their user name does not appear in a user search. In the past I have had friends with new accounts who are looking for each other but can not find one another because neither knows how to create their user page and thus their user names do not appear in a user search. • I used their online media guide, as I recall. It should have the game-by-game results of every season they've played, which is also how I've done the same for Richmond and W&M seasons. I recommend condensing every decade into one page each like I did for W&M, unless a specific season is especially notable (e.g. the 2007 Delaware season you made in which they were national runners-up). Thought for career blocks article

I saw your new NCAA career blocks article - nice work. One thought - it might be an interesting add to note that David Robinson would have finished #3 on the list (516 blocks) had the NCAA officially kept the stat. If you look at Robinson's basketball-reference.com page, his college stats show totals for all four years. I am pretty sure the source of all the info on that site comes from NBA Registers. There are other guys for whom their "unofficial totals" would make the list (e.g. - Patrick Ewing had 493 blocks, Ralph Sampson had 462 and Hakeem Olajuwon had 454). By piecing together all of the evidence:

1. Basketball-reference says Bob Harrison went to high school in Toledo, Ohio.
2. Basketball-reference also lists his birth date as August 12, 1927. The archived newspaper article says a 13-year old 8th grader named Bob Harrison, from Toledo, Ohio, achieved the feat on February 3, 1941. The NBA player Bob Harrison was exactly 13 years old as of February 3, 1941.
3. NBA player Harrison attended UMichigan, which is only 1 hour's drive from Toledo.

Andy Wolfe

I believe you are mistaken with the source on Wolfe. It says "He eventually earned his law degree from the University of San Francisco and practiced in Oakland until his retirement several years ago." So he was still alive "several years" before 2007 and the implication is that he still is. Either way, Category:Possibly living people is for those "for whom no documentation has existed for a decade or longer". No matter how you interpret the source, it is clear he has been alive within the last decade, thus he deserves all the proper protections and considerations of Category:Living people. 1929-38 Consensus All-America teams

I am close to converting these articles (and matching templates) to match the others (Consensus team with the individual teams below) and wanted to make sure you are OK with my losing the Helms POY designation on these today. Prior to 1929, Helms was the only All-American source so those articles would stay as is. The thought is to convert these 10 articles and corresponding templates over the next month. Any issues? The difference with these vs. 1939-present is that there is no consensus second team, only a first team. A side benefit is fewer redlinks in the templates than with the 10-man Helms squads. Thanks! Yeah go for it. It needs to be historically accurate, so whether I like the changes or not (which I don't mind) is irrelevant. Looks like we'll have to TfD the 1929 through 1938 Helms All-American templates and replace them with NCAA Consensus All-Americans templates (with no subdivisions). Idea

Hey - Given the recent discussion around templates and succession boxes, it seems like we may need to look towards getting a little more energy around the WP:CBB project and develop something like this from WP:CFB. I do think a first step would be re-energizing a bgger core group around driving this. Right now there are only a few of us who are really involved with the project. I'd feel better if we could get a bigger group together to set standards, set prioritites (I'd love to start get a schedule to get past seasons, etc developed). I think it'd be a good idea but it would take massive participation to get it up to snuff with WP:CFB standards. I am willing to participate on getting it going in time, but from a personal standpoint I want to focus my efforts on the consensus and Helms All-American players for now. WP:CFB certainly sets the bar pretty high as far as unity and large-scale organization goes (WP:NBA is really good too), but like you said, before we could even embark on such a conquest we'd have to really solicit current and prospective WP:CBBALL members to get on board. Hey - saw you have Kelly on your priority list - that's good, he definitely rates an article. However, I am pretty certain he wasn't a 4-time SWAC POY. I have seen newspaper stories confirming Larry Smith as the 1980 SWAC POY (Kelly's freshman year) and Kelly's SWAC HOF bio only claims 1982 and 1983 (http://www.swac.org/hallfame/2006swachof.html). Just a heads up - I have seen a reference that claims Kelly was 4-time SWAC POY and its probably the same one you have seen, but I think its yet another case of poor record keeping on the part of the SWAC schools. Things might be coming to a head on succession boxes

I have been in a pretty serious back and forth on these on the Jon Scheyer article. Got a feeling it will end in arbitration - which is probably the right place for some of this stuff to get out there. I put my finger on why they bug me so much (beyond the appearance) - there is zero requirement of notability for them (unlike templates). People can just make up their own parameters, no matter how insignificant. They might be the only thing on Wikipedia with no rules! In my opinion, we need to get this issue resolved with some consensus and codified at WP:CBBALL. Rikster2 (talk) 12:57, 16 October 2010 (UTC)

I'd never thought about succession boxes that way before, but I suppose that's a good a reason as any for why they're so stupid. If this does get to arbitration please let me know, because I'd like to see how this plays out. If you recall, once upon a time I removed those from Jon Scheyer's article as well, only to have User:Epeefleche revert them. I found out there is actually a succession box standardization project, so at least someone is trying to bring some order to these things. After reading their guidelines I really feel the only things in college basketball that we should even be considering them for are college head coaches and major (I'm talking Wooden, Naismith) awards. They don't specifically go deep into sports, but looking at the examples in politics and royalty, it doesn't seem like anything else really rises to a comparable level. Parade High School All-Americans

Jrcla2, you are reverting my recent edits to this category in error. "Category:Parade High School All-Americans (boys' basketball)" is one of five properly spelled subcategories of the parent "Category:Parade High School All-Americans"; the others being "Category:Parade High School All-Americans (football)," "Category:Parade High School All-Americans (girls' basketball)," "Category:Parade High School All-Americans (boys' soccer)," and "Category:Parade High School All-Americans (girls' soccer)." I populated the original parent category with the football All-Americans. Rikster created the subcategories and populated them; the original subcategories were misspelled (specifically, the plural possessive nouns boys' and girls') and are inconsistent with standard WP naming conventions (i.e., we properly use "men's college basketball," not "men college basketball" or "mens college basketball"). This was mentioned and ignored at the end of the related CfD discussion. Afterward, Rikster acknowledged that the plural possessives in the subcategories were misspelled and needed to be corrected; I agreed to take care of that (please see discussions on my talk page @ User talk:Dirtlawyer1#Parade All-American categories). The other incorrectly spelled subcategories have already been depopulated and are now pending speedy deletion; it remains to depopulate the incorrectly spelled "boys basketball" subcategory, populate the correctly spelled "boys' basketball" subcategory, and then delete "boys basketball." I ask that you be part of the solution, and not needlessly revert these edits again. In fact, your assistance in correcting the "boys' basketball" subcategory spellings on the article pages would help with the timely correction of this spelling and grammar problem and would be greatly appreciated. Wouldn't the quicker way to go about this be: (1) De-populate the "boys' basketball" category, (2) Delete "boys' basketball", (3) Nominate "boys basketball" for renaming, (4) Once approved, a bot would go and move all of the instances of "boys basketball" to "boys' basketball" without any tedious, human-made edits.

Jrcla2, I've already nominated the "boys basketball" subcategory for speedy renaming/move with substantial explanation at CfD. Notwithstanding the "renaming/move" terminology, the process as it was explained to me is substantially what you described above. Once the speedy grace period of 48 hours elapses without objection, Cydebot will tweak the categories on the article pages, effectively moving them from "boys basketball" to "boys' basketball." Then "boys basketball" will be deleted and we can get back to improving content instead of futzing with CfD procedure. Please accept my apologies for any aggravation this may have caused you. I found out a while back that WP:NBA is trying to eradicate {{Infobox NBAretired}} and make all NBA players' infoboxes, whether active or retired, use {{Infobox NBA Player}} for consistency. As far as international goes, use {{Infobox basketball player}} for any player (whether American or foreign) who either currently plays for or his last professional team ever was in a non-NBA league. In other words, if Joe Cool played for 12 years in the NBA, but then played his final 2 years of professional basketball in Italy's Serie A, then use the generic basketball player infobox. Do you know what the graduation rates of top basketball prospects are? The last number one prospect to even finish one year of college was Josh McRoberts in 2005. The article should not say that UNC will be Harrison Barnes future alma mater. It is unlikely that he will graduate. You can certainly remove "future alma mater" from the article because that is, I agree, WP:speculation. However, you verbally denigrated a player in his talk page without context, without real reason and most importantly without any sources. I'm not aware of who the number one prospects were since 2006 (if you could provide a link for that info), and I'd also like to see sources that show none of the top prospects have finished one year of college since 2006 either. Thanks, I'll be sure to get those. Basically I'm just hopping around to every NBA article imaginable and tagging the photographs or otherwise applicable files to the NBA Project. I think it will help keep those (hundreds, thousands?) of images in one, convenient spot for us and other users to peruse. D-League player category naming convention

Jrcla2 - Since the D-League season kicked off Thursday I have been applying the team categories to players as they appear (hope this isn't something you wanted to do). My question is this - the Albuquerque Thunderbirds cahnged their name slightly to the New Mexico Thunderbirds - should this be a new cat? I think that is what was done with the Baltimore/Capitol/Washington Bullets, but didn't want to muck up the hierarchy by creating an invalid category. Thanks. That's a good question, one that I've toyed with before but never came to any solid conclusion. After giving it some thought, I say that there should be a new Category:New Mexico Thunderbirds players, and then the Albuquerque Thunderbirds one will become a subcat of it. Since there's precedence in WP:NBA, and since the D-League is within the scope of that WikiProject, I say yes, make it. Also, please feel free to add as many of these cats to players as you want. That's not something I "want to do" per se. When I created the cats back in August or September I went around and tried to populate them but it was a b----. I'm happy you're doing it, actually. 1981 SWAC POY

Something about that year makes these hard to find, eh? I think it's probably Harry Kelly, but I can't find any proof. He was the only SWAC guy on the AP All-American HM team that year. The other 4 members of the All-Swac team were Albert Irving and Dwight Alexander of Alcorn & Alvin Jackson and Anthony Bryant of Sothern (at least according to the 81-82 Street & Smiths, they don't mention who the POY was). I was just about to message you because I've been looking for this mystery POY for the last hour straight. I really don't think it was Harry Kelly (however, given his talent I will not rule him out). From the sources I've found, I am convinced that the 1981 POY was either Kevin Loder of Alabama State or Audie Norris of Jackson State, but I'll be damned if I can't find a single blurb anywhere about either of them as the player of the year (or, as the SWAC sometimes refers to them, as season MVPs). Interesting. Could be Norris or Loder. I wouldn't go by my Street & Smith, the writing was pretty unclear in the SWAC section. I see you found names back to 1974. For 1977 I would be shocked if it weren't either Purvis Short or Alonzo Bradley. Both were first team College Division All-Americans that year. In 1978, I would think it was Purvis Short for sure, but again, no proof. The SWAC (and all its members) became an NCAA D1 conference in 1979, but has been around for a lot longer as an NAIA league. Paul Arizin's 100 point game

I will try to find out more about this game. I do quite a bit of research of this kind of stuff. It's not even acknowledged by Villanova's media guide or record book. It's odd because the Nova media guide has a complete listing of every 100 point game by the team. Only two of those games occurred while Arizin was playing for Villanova (in the regular season, that is). In one of those games, Arizin scored 85. In the other game, he scored 34 points. It's a change of pace from the usual editing. I like doing the FCS football templates because I'm a CAA conference alum, and I have a soft spot for lesser-tier (but still really important) football and basketball programs. I can do all of the CAA basketball navboxes as I get the chance, and then beyond that it'll be pick and choose. What's really driving me is my unparalleled hatred of succession boxes.
