Notification of pending suspension of administrative permissions due to inactivity

[edit]

Information icon Following a community discussion in June 2011, consensus was reached to provisionally suspend the administrative permissions of users who have been inactive for one year (i.e. administrators who have not made any edits or logged actions in over one year). As a result of this discussion, your administrative permissions will be removed pending your return if you do not return to activity within the next month. If you wish to have these permissions reinstated should this occur, please post to the Wikipedia:Bureaucrats' noticeboard and the userright will be restored per the re-sysopping process (i.e. as long as the attending bureaucrats are reasonably satisfied that your account has not been compromised, that your inactivity did not have the effect of evading scrutiny of any actions which might have led to sanctions, and that you have not been inactive for a three-year period of time). If you remain inactive for a three-year period of time, including the present year you have been inactive, you will need to request reinstatement at WP:RFA. This removal of access is procedural only, and not intended to reflect negatively upon you in any way. We wish you the best in future endeavors, and thank you for your past administrative efforts. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, Sabine's Sunbird. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

  • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
  • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Hi, I've started working this up to featured article status, some way off yet though. I notice that you were a major editor on this, and I'm happy to submit it as a joint nomination when it's ready, if you are OK with that. I don't mind doing the grunt work, I've got decent sources although I might possibly need some help with sources when I get to "Predators and parasites" (haven't even started looking yet). Let me know what you think Jimfbleak (talk) 05:33, 16 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I know we are some way off posting yet, but a few quick comments (not sure how recently you've done an FA, forgive me if I'm telling you what you already know).
  • There shouldn't be any refs in the lead
  • No wikilinks to continents or sovereign countries
  • parts of the article are in AE spelling, eg "defense" (noun) and "behavior". No AE country has bee-eaters, whereas many BE countries in Africa, Australia, Europe and South Asia do. Article should be consistently in BE
No galleries, although obviously some of the pics could be placed in the text if appropriate

No rush to fix these, I'm still collecting refs for predators and parasites. Would you be happy for future discussion to be on the article talk page? That seems more logical than our talk pages. We went to the Western Cape some years ago, great birding and climate and good fun Jimfbleak (talk) 05:31, 17 October 2016 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I do not know whether you are a native speaker of the English language. My edit relates to an issue of grammar. To "fight" buoyancy is not a grammatically or even a physically correct concept. Feel free to change the wording, but reverting a good-faith edit that is grammatically and conceptually correct, without at least discussing it and/or supplying an inline citation, is just plain rude. Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi Sabine's Sunbird.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Sabine's Sunbird.......welcome back! I thought I'd let you know I've been working on the New Zealand bird list, and am now working on the Chatham Islands list.....I've been using a 200 mile circle around North Island, South Island, and Stewart Island for border definition purposes. This would give the Kermadec Islands, Auckland Islands, Chatham Islands, Campbell Islands, Antipodes Islands, and Bounty Islands their own distinct listing area. The Cook Islands, Niue, and Tokelau already have distinct lists. Just an FYI, unless you'd like to offer suggestions......Pvmoutside (talk) 22:12, 9 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Lead of red-billed quelea

[edit]

Hello Sabine's Sunbird. Thanks for prepping the Q.q.-article before review and your offer for assistance. As you suggested, I have somewhat extended the lead, but perhaps it needs a bit more. I also have removed some of the subheadings or merged them, but not entirely to the level that may be consistent with some other articles. I did split up the gallery, although with some feeling of loss, as its intended function was to enable easy comparison of the different plumages among the sexes and subspecies, but since it was far from complete and also contained also other images, I concur it is better to split this one up. However, I think a gallery is sometimes very useful, such as in the Peony-article where I included three galleries: one for different stages in the development, one for as many species as images where available for and one containing an image of each of the six flower types in cultivars. Anyway, could I ask you to have another look at the Q.q.-article and push it a little bit further? Thanks in advance and kind regards, Dwergenpaartje (talk) 09:17, 25 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Hooded pitohui. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Hooded pitohui), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Hello, I hope you are doing great! The FAC of the mallard was closed before I could leave a thank you note for the review comments and then withdraw it. I thought it was good to go after the PR, GOCE copy-editing, GA passing, and talk page comments on any issues, but I think I was wrong. I hope to fix all the issues and re-nominate it again when all the issues mentioned and any more of them (would ask after I first fixed the issues mentioned on the talk page ). I realized later that it actually was a complex article, when I started editing more on other bird articles. Anyways, thank you again for your comments, and I hope I did not cause much trouble! Hello Sabine's Sunbird, could you help move Australasian Wren (the former Maluridae family page) to Australasian wren (presently a redirect page)? I do not wish to lose the page history in doing so improperly. Thanks, Loopy30 (talk) 03:49, 9 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

New Page Reviewing

[edit]
Hello, Sabine's Sunbird.

We met at the Women in Red editathon in Wellington a few months ago.
Would you please consider becoming a New Page Reviewer? Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; currently Wikipedia needs experienced users at this task. (After gaining the flag, patrolling is not mandatory. One can do it at their convenience). But kindly read the tutorial before making your decision. Thanks. — Insertcleverphrasehere (or here) 09:23, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedian at Large grant proposal needs volunteers and endorsements

[edit]

I'm applying for a reasonably large Wikimedia Foundation grant to support a year of Wikipedian in Residence postings at a wide (and growing) range of institutions throughout the country. The grant has just gone live: NZ Wikipedian at Large

Are you interested in helping with any residencies or events around the country – at the moment just in the four main centres? If so, you can add yourself using the Volunteer button and say what you'd be keen to do. I really appreciated your help during the Women in Science event. AND/OR If you think a "Wikipedian at Large" is a good idea, please write a short endorsement, since you've participated in an event I've run. A vote of confidence from the Wikipedia community will make a big difference to the grant's success.

Many thanks! —Giantflightlessbirds (talk) 00:55, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Little spotted kiwi, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page D'Urville Island (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

"addled mandible" in Red-and-white crake

[edit]

I noticed in your May 2017 edit to the above article, that you used the term "lower addled mandible". I cannot find any explanation of that term. The cited source for your edit is behind a paywall. By any chance, do you still have access to the site, Handbook of the Birds of the World (https://www.hbw.com/species/red-and-white-crake-laterallus-leucopyrrhus) so that your edit may be rendered more clearly? It's a minor matter, but needs to be changed at some point. Thanks.--Quisqualis (talk) 06:01, 5 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How we will see unregistered users

[edit]

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

Thank you. /Johan (WMF)

Always precious

[edit]

Ten years ago, you were found precious. That's what you are, always. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:31, 5 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for Hooded pitohui, introduced (in 2017): "Another bird, this time from New Guinea, but this one is intriguing as it is the most poisonous bird in the world. Didn't know birds were poisonous? Neither did scientists really till they started looking at this one." --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:47, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Triple Crown

[edit]
I am very pleased to award the WikiProject Birds Triple Crown to Sabine's Sunbird, for their amazing contributions in this area. Keep up the great work! Damien Linnane (talk) 12:56, 26 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

hooded pitohui

[edit]

hello, Sabine's Sunbird! i had a quick question regarding this article and the associated blurb. is "kleptotoxicism" a word used in the relevant literature? it appears to have been added to the article by an ip user, here, without a reliable source. the word appears on this site as well, though it cites wikipedia as a source. dying (talk) 14:04, 25 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Just happened to see this and removed the claim per WP:OR, it does appear to be an original invention on Wikipedia. Shyamal (talk) 09:59, 4 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Invitation to an in-person meetup in Mohua / Golden Bay

[edit]
Golden Bay Air are holding some seats for us until 21 November

Thinking about your summer break? Think about joining other Wikipedians and Wikimedians in Golden Bay / Mohua! Details are on the meetup page. There's heaps of interesting stuff to work on e.g. the oldest extant waka or New Zealand's oldest ongoing legal case. Or you may spend your time taking photos and then upload them.

Golden Bay is hard to get to and the airline flying into Tākaka uses small planes, so we are holding some seats from and to Wellington and we are offering attendees a $200 travel subsidy to help with costs.

Be in touch with Schwede66 if this event interests you and you'd like to discuss logistics. Schwede66 09:14, 13 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I know some folks stop editing but continue to check their talk page ... hope that includes you. I've got this article listed as the April 24 TFA. No need to do anything if that works for you. Let me know if there's anything I can do. - Dank (push to talk) 02:31, 11 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Now April 30. - Dank (push to talk) 16:03, 18 February 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you today for the 2017 article, introduced: "Another WP:BIRD nomination and another esoteric small rail (we do so love them on the project). Hopefully you'll enjoy the story of its discovery, and the variety of images we're grateful people have released on Wikipedia friendly licences or such a hard to see species."! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 07:54, 30 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
