Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

    Instructions for editors

There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

    1. Proposed additions
    2. Proposed removals
    3. Troubleshooting and problems
    4. Discussion

Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

    Instructions for admins
Any admin unfamiliar with this page should probably read this first, thanks.
If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

Please consider using Special:BlockedExternalDomains instead, powered by the AbuseFilter extension. This is faster and more easily searchable, though only supports whole domains and not whitelisting.

    1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
    2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
    3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages.)
    4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regular expressions — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
    5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
    6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number – 824579646 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.

@Jytdog: I see also article spamming, plus Added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. If the article survives AfD, I would suggest to link only an about page for use on the article itself. --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:44, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
thx both of you! Jytdog (talk) 09:45, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    gilli.tv

There's been a flare-up of the spamming of this useless (and potentially copyright violating) site lately, including at Shani (TV series) a couple of times. Looking at the appearance of these links on talk pages, there are quite a few Sohaibs and similar names. Highly suggestive of deliberate spamming. Blacklist is probably warranted, as well as indeffing spammers. Most of these are SPAs, and looking at their edit summaries, there are a lot of "i just add new citation to related this article for help others" sentiments. @Apparition11: What do you think? (Also, thank you for including the spam links in the user warnings. It's very helpful for tracking suspects.) Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:28, 23 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Cyphoidbomb: Thanks for making this report. It is definitely being spammed by either sock or meat puppets. It is generally added as a reference, but rarely actually sourcing the content. For example, one I woke up to this morning: [1]. It was added as a reference to Wafa. While it provided free episodes of Wafa (Geo Tv), it gave no insight to the content on the article it was added to or mention of the content that it was sourcing. The spam is pretty persistent. I just woke up to the link added to 24 articles by at least 2 3 brand new accounts using the same edit summaries. Apparition11 Complaints/Mistakes 12:32, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Apparition11: Take a look at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jack8979. I organized by earliest accounts. There were two accounts that were possible sockmasters, but they lacked the clear behavior that most of the other accounts were demonstrating, so I filed everything under the first account to not only spam gilli.tv, but to also add edit summaries similar to the rest. All have been blocked, and in a second I'm going to add gilli.tv to the spam blacklist. Cyphoidbomb (talk) 16:46, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Cyphoidbomb: Very nice. I know that was a lot of work, and I certainly do appreciate it! Cheers! Apparition11 Complaints/Mistakes 12:28, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The official website of Manga Entertainment in the UK. It seems like back in 2011 user or users were adding lots of blog entry links to Wikipedia articles. Apart from the fact that they hopefully will have given up on that by now, there is no longer a blog on the site. Shiroi Hane (talk) 20:13, 17 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Even without the blog, I'm not seeing anything on that site that we'd want to cite in Wikipedia articles. If you need some links on the Manga Entertainment article, then  Defer to Whitelist. ~Anachronist (talk) 22:53, 29 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It says there that "Requests quoting only a domain (i.e. ending in .com or similar without anything after the / character) will be denied" and refers me back here. Since what I was trying to do when I was referred here in the first place was add the site to external links at Manga Entertainment, that is precisely what I need. It is entirely plausible that we might want to cite information from under /news/ or product details from /shopmanga/, but I have no specific URLs to whitelist at preset other than /. Shiroi Hane (talk) 16:50, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Shiroi Hane: You did not read the full sentence: "You must provide a full link to the specific web page you want to be whitelisted." .. that is exactly what we will ask you there. If you need the domain as an official link for the subject's article, you'll have to provide a full link to the top level page or an about page. Whitelisting the domain itself is simply negating the blacklist. Here no Declined. --Dirk Beetstra T C 05:12, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The "full link to the top level page" (which I can't reproduce directly as I would be unable to save this comment) *is* www.mangauk.com which is "without anything after the / character" and thus would be denied for whitelisting. Why are you upholding a blacklist due to SEO-type behaviour from 7 years ago anyway? The structure of the company has changed completely since then even (Manga UK was owned by Starz/Anchor Bay but has since been bought back and is now independent), as has most of the staff, and their PR (they used Fetch for a long time, but not for a couple of years). Shiroi Hane (talk) 17:36, 1 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Shiroi Hane: I am sure there is an about page. Make your case there, I am sure we can find a solution.
7 years? I just declined a case where someone with a clear interest in having his site linked. That site was heavily sockpuppet spammed in 2007. Hundreds of sites blacklisted, regularly they return because they want it linked. Spammers hardly ever go away, being linked pays their bills. This is not a schoolkid that changes teacher after a year or grows up. This is long term abuse because that is what they are paid to do. We only delist if there is a significant independant need, one WikiPage or 10 links don’t cut the deal. Sorry. —Dirk Beetstra T C 06:54, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    mangauk.com/about-us/ would do. —Dirk Beetstra T C 06:56, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Defence-industries.com page

I tried to add: "defence-industries.com/projects/general-dynamics-received-advance-procurement-contract-for-us-navy" to an article talk page, but rec'd a message that the url defence-industries (dot) com is blacklisted. I couldn't find this url on either the local or global lists (unless I missed it somehow), but beyond that, I'm not sure why it would be blacklisted in the first place, it seems to be a legitimate site. Even if it is blacklisted, I would like either the url de-listed, or at least just an exemption for this specific link if that's possible. It's not super-important however, so if I have to jump through all kinds of hoops to make it happen, then skip it. Thanks - theWOLFchild 00:03, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Thewolfchild: no Declined, persistent spamming, see MediaWiki_talk:Spam-blacklist/archives/October_2008#Ochre_Media_Private_Limited and Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam/2008_Archive_Jan_1.5#Ochre_Media_Private_Limited,  Defer to Whitelist for specific links on this domain. --Dirk Beetstra T C 05:28, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Beetstra the reason I posted under 'problems & trouble shooting' was that I was unable to find the url on the blacklists. Do you have any info about that? - theWOLFchild 13:44, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like at some point it was combined with a few others to form \bdefen(?:ce-industries|sive-driving-forums|sivedrivingus)\.com\b. All of those sites in the original request were just press release scrapers - you can get the same release directly from the companies.Kuru (talk) 14:44, 24 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Thewolfchild: that is why we include the domain-tracking template, it gives you links to a report ('COIBot'), tracking ('tracked') and advanced Wikipedia search ('advanced'). Those give you in 99.5% of the cases an answer (the exceptions being that something specific on a domain is blacklisted, which is sometimes difficult to track down).
I somehow have the feeling that 'defence-industries.com' is also somewhat of a press release scraper. The related 'xxx-technology.com' domains that where blacklisted with these do ring a relation to a very, very long spam situation which all link back to one holding company. Often there is no reason to link to these sites, you can use the original. --Dirk Beetstra T C 06:01, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Galatta was added in the blacklisted sites list 10 years back i.e, 2008. It seems like the site has spamming campaigns back in 2008. At that time, the site was handled by an agency. Apart from the fact that we hopefully will have given up on that by now. After that we have improved a lot in terms of quality. Our site meets the norms of quality guidelines. It has been a long time ago. Hence, reconsider the request.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Meeragupta01 (talkcontribs)

You come here, try to add it (which failed 4 times), and then you come immediately here knowing that it was 10 years back, moreover, you clearly state 'our site meets the norms of quality guidelines.' This is the umptieth 'new editor' who comes here to get it delisted. Conclusion: yet another sock to show me that they still have an interest to have it added and that there is still good reason to have it blacklisted. no Declined --Dirk Beetstra T C 14:24, 25 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Hellosialkot77: You yourself were one of the spammers of this website. You attempted to add it 6 times to 2 different pages. Moreover, your username is practically the same as another user who spammed this link. Now, you are requesting delisting, but before there were two IPs trying to blank the request. You cannot blame this story on the 'Pakistani IPs'. In any case, we don't care who spammed the site, we care to protect Wikipedia against the spamming.

Per Doc James - the site has NO utility in Wikipedia, the site was spammed. --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:35, 31 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I am looking to remove econlib.org from the spam blacklist. It appears to be triggering the block based on the entry beconlib.org. I think its inclusion appears to be a mistake, and that there is trouble shooting going on here: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=MediaWiki_talk:Spam-blacklist&oldid=771045371#econlib.org

The site is a repository for economics definitions and articles by economists and doesn't seem to match the definition for blacklisting. Any assistance would be appreciated. Squatch347 (talk) 19:41, 2 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Squatch347: no Declined, it was spammed/abused by editors engaging in SEO ánd having a clear direct link//COI. Moreover, most of the material is accessible elsewhere (up to WikiSource). --Dirk Beetstra T C 06:44, 3 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Beetstra:, sorry, just found the discussion in the archives. It does seem like there was a serious spam issue. I'm not as familiar with the blacklist/whitelist functionality as you, would it be possible to white list just certain sections of the site? As several commenters mentioned there are some excellent explanations of not commonly discussed topics (like monopsony which is how I discovered the block) that are better sources for article development than non publicaly available textbooks or primary source historic or peer reviewed texts.
    Squatch347 (talk) 15:27, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Squatch347: yes, we can whitelist certain things for specific goals, but be aware that a lot ‘’is’’ available elsewhere. This is just a library (with an agenda). But as any library, some material is unique. —Dirk Beetstra T C 03:55, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Addition to the COIBot reports

The lower list in the COIBot reports now have after each link four numbers between brackets (e.g. "www.example.com (0, 0, 0, 0)"):

    1. first number, how many links did this user add (is the same after each link)
    2. second number, how many times did this link get added to wikipedia (for as far as the linkwatcher database goes back)
    3. third number, how many times did this user add this link
    4. fourth number, to how many different wikipedia did this user add this link.

If the third number or the fourth number are high with respect to the first or the second, then that means that the user has at least a preference for using that link. Be careful with other statistics from these numbers (e.g. good user who adds a lot of links). If there are more statistics that would be useful, please notify me, and I will have a look if I can get the info out of the database and report it. This data is available in real-time on IRC.

    Poking COIBot

When adding {{LinkSummary}}, {{UserSummary}} and/or {{IPSummary}} templates to WT:WPSPAM, WT:SBL, WT:SWL and User:COIBot/Poke (the latter for privileged editors) COIBot will generate linkreports for the domains, and userreports for users and IPs.

    Discussion

Have started a discussion here about using the blacklist to prevent students from linking to the inside net of your university. These links are useless for anyone who does not have a password to that specific institution. Doc James (talk · contribs · email) 20:31, 4 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
