Hi Bearcat,

Could I get a copy of the deleted article?

I put a fair amount of effort into it, and should be able to reuse portions outside the Wikipedia.

Thanks,

Hello Bearcat, Thanks for checking in on the Steve Dacri article. I'd appreciate any additional feedback and suggestions. Thanks! Pattymooney (talk) 21:13, 6 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BrianStock Music Festival

Hello Bearcat, You recently deleted the previously mentioned page. I see now that the problem was advertising and or self-promotion. My intentions were not to spam, but only to contribute to the encyclopedia. I would like to salvage the article and re-write it according to Wikipedia's standards. If you could help me find the information on the removed page so I may alter it, and not have to start from scratch that would be most appreciated. Thank you. (Bgluck (talk) 21:24, 7 March 2011 (UTC)) Hello again, Thank you for your advise. As for my email adress I knew that was a no-no thats why I edited it out soon after making it visible. Anyway, Im fine with the outcome of this. But in the fututre, to create a page I got from your message that the festival would have to be documented by a reliable source. Say could this be a local newspaper? I would like to contribute this to wikipedia, foloowing the rules when it is ready to be. Thanks. (Bgluck (talk) 05:39, 11 March 2011 (UTC))[reply]

BLP, ethnicity, gender

Wikipedia talk:Biographies of living persons#Include "ethnicity, gender," to match all other guidelines

Wikilawyers have been trying to drive through a wording loophole in BLP, saying ethnicity and gender of EGRS doesn't apply to living persons, simply because the two words aren't in the policy. (Apparently, they think it should only apply to dead people.) I remember you as having been very involved in years past.

They also are trying to remove the notability and relevance criteria for EGRS, but that's another fight for another day, I'm simply too busy to watch two fronts at the same time.

Bearcat, could you please help me here in this situation. I seem to be having an issue with the editors in the abovementioned article. They do not seem to understand that they cannot remove the deletion tag from the page and they continue to write the article in a Press Release format. I foresee this getting into a edit war of sorts and would like to avoid that at all costs. Could you look at this and see if you could help me. I tried to revert the edits to replace the deletion tag but I can't seem to figure out why its not working for me. I dont know if I am having system problems. Thanks for your help! --Canyouhearmenow 22:40, 11 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your recent edits to the Marc Dalton article

Hi Bearcat, I do not believe we have met previously. I'm puzzled by your recent reverts to the Marc Dalton page, which I just stumbled across in the Recent Changes. The editor could well be a SPA or nearly, as they have only edited on one other topic in 2007, but how is the addition of a photo "vandalism"? Also his material about the recall effort appears to be sourced, so why is the article "not the place for this"? I have never heard of this politician and know nothing about any of this, and so am truly a neutral party. As it stands I'm quite confused, and frankly at a loss to understand your edits and edit summaries. Please enlighten me, as I notice you are an experienced editor indeed. Renaming Categories

Hey Bearcat, Can you possibly nominate this category for renaming?:

it's members are all university bands not college; obviously set up by a US user. The parent is Category:College marching bands. I believe the other child Category:College marching bands in the United Kingdom is also problematic. Argolin (talk) 04:04, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of Kathryn Hens-Greco for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Kathryn Hens-Greco is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Kathryn Hens-Greco until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on good quality evidence, and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion template from the top of the article.--DThomsen8 (talk) 12:24, 14 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Categorization of my Articles

You recently put a template on my articles saying that they weren't in a category. One, the Youth Energy Summit, should be in a category of green energy if that category exists. The other, Darn Cold Croquet, should be in the category of sports. I don't know how to find a list of categories, or if there are any subcategories that are more specific. I also do not know how to put an article into a category. Can you please tell me how to do that? It would be nice if you could explain it, then I could do it myself, so I would be able to make better edits in the future.Ryan Vesey (talk) 12:07, 15 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to reach out to you regarding the deletion of an article KDrew that you did. I understand that you are from Canada and are aware of the Canadian artist who shares the same name as the New Jersey artist. The article has reference with printed publications which follows Wikipedia's guidelines. Deletion of Taleeb Noormohamed

Regarding the deletion of Taleeb Noormohamed, you stated that being an unelected candidate in a future election doesn't make a person notable. I understand where you're coming from but would like to be able to add more in order to show that this individual is duly notable. I thought I had sufficient information on his other work to show that he is in fact someone of importance, but could add more to state it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fudge786 (talkcontribs) 08:24, 16 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

professional titles in bio article names

Hi, thx for your correction on 3-15-11 (Dr. Ferdinand Maack -> Ferdinand Maack). It wasn't typo, I just didn't know. (I'm new.) I thought I could easily find "professional titles are not allowed on biographic article names of persons" or some such thing on WP:HELP, but ... nope! (Just curious, is there a specific convention I'm missing, or is it found in the "Bill Clinton instead of William Jefferson Clinton" simplicity guideline I was able to locate? Thx! Wikilove guest post?

Dear Bearcat,

I am gathering stories about what people love about wiki editing and culture; things that make them smile; great collaborations they've had that have the wiki spirit. Not necessarily mediawiki or wikipedia. (one of my favorite personal examples is someone who went around tagging everything with 2d barcodes that linked to a webpage where he would write about it... during the initial surge of enthusiasm about cellphone barcode-readers)

Would you be willing to write a guest post for a blog about this?

notability: Line Spectra

Hi, For the notability in question for the Line Spectra article, following the wikipedia guidelines for notability for musicians :

10.Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show, performance in a television show or notable film, inclusion on a notable compilation album, etc. (But if this is the only claim, it is probably more appropriate to have a mention in the main article and redirect to that article. Read WP:BLP1E and WP:BIO1E for further clarifications) 11.Has been placed in rotation nationally by any major radio network.

Those two criteria are met as the band has a song which was included on an episode of a notable television show: Degrassi. As well, the band was placed on rotation nationally (US and Canada) on CBC Radio 3.

Thanks —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.70.235.198 (talk) 20:42, 22 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please see reference #6 in the article. It is an article from a local print newspaper which mentions the song being included in an episode of Degrassi. It is a print newpaper which mentions the song being included in the television show. Two of the references on the page are from print newspapers #2 and #6. This should be evidence that the band has garnered media coverage, but more can be added.

Deletion of Darn Cold Croquet

You deleted my article, Darn Cold Croquet, without adding a speedy deletion tag or a proposed deletion tag. This gave me no chance to justify reasons that the article should remain. Wikipedia does not tell its users to be bold in deleting pages. I believe the page should stay because it is a variant of croquet with sources. Wikipedia has a limitless amount of space, and removing the article adds nothing to Wikipedia while leaving the article up adds information for the percentage of users who are interested in the topic. Thank youRyan Vesey (talk) 05:00, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Would you please consider undeleting this article? I am not the original page author.

 • You applied WP:POLITICIAN, which is a notability criterion, to speedy deletion criterion A7, which is not intended to judge notability. This was inappropriate. Being an elected politician *is* a credible claim of significance for A7 purposes.
 • WP:POLITICIAN in any case does not rule out a local councillor being notable, if they meet the WP:GNG.
 • There is a credible argument based on press coverage that this individual might meet the GNG.

Cheers,

Thparkth (talk) 11:07, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for restoring the article. You have mischaracterised my remarks above at AFD. I have not asserted that this gentleman meets the GNG; I have asserted that there is a credible argument that he might.

Use of Uncategorised on stubs

Hi, re this edit - please note that since the article is tagged as a stub, it should be given uncategorized stub instead of uncategorized - both the wording and the categorisation are different. Thanks. --Redrose64 (talk) 16:00, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2003–04 Manchester City F.C. season/FA Cup Fourth round replay

Wikipedia does not do "subpages" of articles. If it's meant to be a template, then it has to be moved into template space; if it's just meant to be a portion of another article, then it has to be pasted and merged back into its parent article. But if you want it to stay where it is, then it has to be either categorized or tagged as uncat, because there's an absolute obligation to clear every page off the uncategorized articles list, with no exceptions — so as long as it's on my list, I have to do something with it. Every single page that's standing on its own in articlespace has to function and be treated as an article in its own right, period, no exceptions. Bearcat (talk) 03:13, 25 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

My latest edit to that page hopefully takes care of this issue to your satisfaction. Mancini's Lasagne invite to Harry Talk 01:06, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Regarding your move

 • (Move log); 17:47 . . Bearcat (Talk | contribs) moved Sortname2 to User:Pdfpdf/Sortname2 [redirect suppressed] (sandbox pages belong in sandbox space)

I thought that had already been done. i.e.

 • 22:59, 24 March 2011 (diff | hist) N User:Pdfpdf/Sortname2 ‎ (sandbox)
 • (Deletion log); 23:16 . . JohnCD (Talk | contribs) deleted "Template:Sortname2" (G7: One author who has requested deletion or blanked the page)

I can't work out what's going on. Can you? Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:14, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The page I moved wasn't sitting at the title Template:Sortname2 — it was at Sortname2 with no prefix. Bearcat (talk) 08:17, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Riiight. So now I'm even more confused. How/when did Sortname2 get created? There's nothing in my http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Contributions/Pdfpdf referring to Sortname2 ... Pdfpdf (talk) 08:24, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
When a page gets moved, all of the edits to that page in your contribution history "move" to the new page title too. According to the edit histories, though, you created the deleted template at 12:25, then db-tagged it at 12:28, and then created the page I moved at 12:29 — so my best guess would be that most likely you intended to create it in sandbox space but something went wrong and it got saved at the plain title "sortname2" for some reason. Bearcat (talk) 08:33, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That's logical. Thanks for sorting that out. Cheers, Pdfpdf (talk) 08:38, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rabbi Pinto - Assistance

Notice you are very active - Would you mind reviewing Rabbi Pinto page ? A major feature story ran on Rabbi Pinto, the largest story ever written about him and the few editors who control the board didnt allow neutral entrees to be placed. Need assistance from curious non interested parties.

The article was syndicated and picked up by Globes a major Israeli paper, The Real Deal a major NYC real estate publication and others but entire chunks of article werent included. Can we have new eyes please ?

Would suggest adding: "Considerable questions have risen regarding Pinto’s organizations finances. A report by a leading New York Jewish newspaper has revealed a “contrast between the rabbi’s lifestyle and his reputation for modest living, and questions about the rabbi’s image as a business guru when his own not-for-profit faces financial problems.” The Forward stated: “The business troubles at Mosdot Shuva Israel could be seen as ironic, given Rabbi Pinto’s reputation as an adviser to businessmen, and particularly to real estate brokers.” 65.112.21.194 (talk) 13:31, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see you speedy deleted the article for The Weeknd under category A7. I think you should have at least put the proposed deletion up for debate. Deletion of page: Rob Forbes

Hello Bearcat,

I created the page for Rob Forbes as a personal bio. He is a well-known designer and entrepreneur in the design industry. We just checked the page was deleted. Please kindly suggest what caused the deletion. I would like edit the page according to your feedback and re-post the page if possible. However, I didn't keep a copy of the article. Deletion of In-Mold Decoration by Roller (IMR)

Hi Bearcat, I saw you delete the page of "In-Mold Decoration by Roller (IMR)" due to the reason of "unambiguous advertising or promotion." IMR is a widely used technology for surface decoration of plastic products. There is also a page of IMR in the Chinese version of Wikipedia. IMR is usually compared with IMF (In-mold Forming), IML (In-mold labling) as another type of in-mold decoration technology. Currently major IMR suppliers are mainly Asian companies such as Nissha printing, ETANSI, Sentien, etc. and one German company, Kurz. 70% of the world's notebooks produced by the top 5 brands such as HP, Acer, Lenovo, Dell, Asus, Toshiba are using IMR as their method for surface decoration. There has been lots of information of IMR in the Chinese and Japanese Web sites. However we haven't seen much information introducing IMR in English online content, which was the main reason why I wanted to create this page. I am quite surprised to the page being deleted because you think it's a "unambiguous advertising or promotion." Please reconsider having the page back or kindly advise whether there was any sentence that raised the concern of being "promotional." Thanks a lot.

Deletion of In-Mold Decoration by Roller (IMR)

I wouldn't agree that media coverage is always reliable (I was a reporter and I believe most of the reporters in the world would agree with me). Since IMR is a fairly new technology, I noticed that there has been wrong information in the Asian media because reporters don't have enough source about this technology. As you mentioned, this is a newly invented technology, so there has not been much information available, especially in English. In other words, for newly invented things that nobody has talked about before, how would you have "media coverage," not to mention "correct" media coverage to be the source? This should be an issue that Wiki has faced before and I believe that there has been a solution. I sincerely hope that this case can be equally treated.

In addition, what was written in the article was mainly the description of how the technology works. For all of the IMR suppliers, the principle is the same. The reason of using that animation was because it is so far the most straight-forward one and easy to understand. IMR is a technology that definitely requires pictures/animation for people to understand. Unfortunately, there has been no media that illustrate this technology in their coverage. Due to all the reasons above, please do reconsider have the article back. Thanks.

Cjmungai (talk) 16:19, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of In-Mold Decoration by Roller (IMR)

You cited G.11 as the reason why you deleted the page, meaning that this page is "exclusively promotional, and would need to be fundamentally... Note that simply having a company or product as its subject does not qualify an article for this criterion." However, there was 1) no company's name 2) no product's name in the article. Please note - IMR is a technology that many companies (such as Sentien http://www.sentien.com.tw/english/page_products_imr.html, ETANSI http://www.etansi.com/imr.aspx) are supplying and top NB brands are using. If you type in "IMR" and search on Google's Chinese or Taiwanese or Japanese site, you will see lots of news coverage, saying that Samsung, Lenovo, HP, acer, Toshiba, etc. are all using this technology. I hope all this coverage in Asia, where IMR's major suppliers and major NB's OEM/ODMs are located, does count as the "reliable" sources.

If your concern now is not the "advertising," but the notability as you mentioned in your previous reply, I believe that in Wiki's "notability" policy, it clearly states that "If an article fails to cite sufficient sources to demonstrate the notability of its subject, look for sources yourself, or: • Ask the article's creator or an expert on the subject[6] for advice on where to look for sources. • Place a "notability" tag on the article to alert other editors. • If the article is about a specialized field, use the "expert-subject" tag with a specific WikiProject to attract editors knowledgeable about that field, who may have access to reliable sources not available online. If appropriate sources cannot be found after a good-faith search for them, consider merging the article's verifiable content into a broader article providing context.[7] Otherwise, if deleting.

I didn't see you do any of the actions above but immediately deleted the article.

I am certainly willing to improve the article, but I can't agree with your reasons of deleting the page. I don't think you are being difficult, but I think you had a misunderstanding about this article and subject. I hope that our discussion helps to clarify some points and ease your concern.

Cjmungai (talk) 02:14, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please, consider slowing down on the speedy deletions

I see that you are very active in combating the torrent of newly-created junk articles. Speedy deletion is a necessary tool for dealing with these and I do acknowledge and appreciate your many contributions.

All the same, I think you might have succumbed to the (very common) temptation to over-use speedy deletion and apply it to articles that don't fit the deliberately-narrow speedy deletion criteria. This isn't any kind of formal complaint, and I'm not trying to persuade your talk page watchers, so I'm not including any links to examples here - let me know if you'd like specifics.

I see from your log that you regularly delete articles under A7, citing their failure to meet notability standards (WP:POLITICIAN,WP:ATHLETE etc) as the reason. But A7 is specifically not about notability - it's designed for articles that contain no credible claim of significance whatsoever. I know from personal experience that you have A7-deleted articles citing "notability" on an elected politician, even though there is an unambiguous consensus that being an elected politician - of any kind - is a "credible claim of significance" for A7 purposes.

Also you seem to be using A7 to delete articles that A7 can never apply to, since it is is specifically limited to individual people, animals, organizations and web content. This means that you shouldn't use it to delete articles about TV shows, or sporting fixtures, or even stuff that someone just made up. The prod/AfD process is well-able to deal with the volume of those articles, and there's no need for one admin's judgement to pre-empt the will of the community in those cases.

Finally I note that you occasionally depart entirely from the speedy deletion criteria, such as speedily-deleting articles about unreleased movies. There is no basis in deletion policy for this. WP:CRYSTAL is a great argument at AfD, but it is not a cause for speedy deletion.

In my opinion, when you delete things in ways that are outside deletion policy, you are not merely deleting without consensus - you are deleting against consensus, since the deletion process, and speedy deletion in particular, are the result of years of discussion and consensus building.

Please, do go back to WP:CSD and re-read the criteria. You may be surprised (as others have been) at how much more narrow the wording is than you might assume. In particular, you might like to re-read WP:NOTCSD.

Cheers,

Thparkth (talk) 03:36, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

(Moved from my talk page to keep discussion in one place - hope you don't mind. Thparkth (talk) 12:02, 30 March 2011 (UTC))[reply]
I think you may not fully realize some of the background issues involved in some of the cases. For instance, the only "TV series" that I can find in my recent deletion history were things called "Working Title", "Airplanes" and "The Deadline Prophecies", none of which were actually real TV series, airing on something called "NSD-TV", which isn't a real TV channel. NSD-TV is some random teenager's YouTube "channel", and all three of the "TV series" were non-notable, plotless three-to-five-second clips he uploaded there. Which, ultimately, means they are valid A7s, because they're web content — the fact that they claimed to be real TV series doesn't get them past A7, because the claims in question were neither credible nor verifiable.
As for the movie, I perhaps explained my rationale poorly, but at the time I saw and deleted the article, its sole cited source didn't actually support the existence of the film at all — and there actually is a bit of an underground movement on here sometimes of people creating articles about presumed future film sequels that haven't actually been announced by a studio (and several of which have failed to ever materialize.) So the onus isn't on us to necessarily give every article the benefit of the doubt; it's on the creator to provide at least one source which confirms that the film in question actually is in the pipeline.
It's also true that in some cases, two good Wikipedia contributors can look at the same article and come to completely opposite conclusions about whether it meets the speedy criteria or not. That doesn't necessarily mean either contributor acted wrongly, however; it just means that (as I did with Bob Long) the deleting editor should make a good faith move of restoring the article and taking it to discussion instead.
I guess I'd just ask you to consider that there can be a lot of reasons why something may not be as inappropriate a speedy candidate as it might seem — sometimes there are background issues that might not be obvious if you're not familiar with them, sometimes editors just explain their choices less effectively than we should (and gawd knows I've also sometimes accidentally selected the wrong criterion from the dropdown box for an article that was legitimately deletable under a different criterion), and sometimes there's just a valid difference of opinion. That said, you're still right that I have at one time or another made a perfectly good faith mistake, too — hell, we all have, gawd knows — but there are a lot of potential explanations, so it's certainly better to discuss them when you disagree. So thanks. Bearcat (talk) 07:09, 30 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
As a non-admin I obviously can't see the content of the articles that have been deleted. Of course I agree that "TV series" only known to some guy's three friends on youtube certainly count as "web content" and so fall under A7. No argument there!
As far as the movie example goes, you are of course right about the tendency to create articles for movies that will maybe exist some day, and you're right to seek the deletion of those articles - but despite that, you are in my opinion wrong to delete them unilaterally. They are not one of the cases where admins are empowered to bypass the deletion process. Why not just prod or AfD them? This might seem like unnecessary process, and I do agree that there are (very rare) cases where a healthy dose of WP:IAR is required, but all the same, this is the consensus-based process the community supports. If people believe that too many no-hope articles are being sent to AfD, they will propose new speedy deletion criteria.
In my opinion the biggest issue is not TV shows or movies, but the notability standards you are applying to A7 deletions. Many good articles started out as questionable, unsourced stubs. We just don't require proof of notability to pass A7, only a credible indication that the subject might be notable, and that "credible indication" is a very low hurdle.
Speedy deletion is dangerous because it is, well, speedy, and because there is no real opportunity for discussion. Of course, it is absolutely necessary, but still, it is quite intimidating, particularly for new users. Even for me, a relatively experienced editor with a good understanding of deletion policy, it is quite a big deal for me to go to an admin's talk page and request the restoration of an article, with the implied complaint that the admin screwed up ;). I can only imagine that it is many times more intimidating for a new user who is unsure of the situation.
So in summary, I probably agree in principle with 99% or more of the deletions you carry out - it's just the mechanism that you are using, unilateral deletion outside of the speedy deletion criteria, that I find problematic. I certainly don't doubt your good faith.

NCB Radio Article Deletion

Hi. I note you deleted the article "NCB Radio". It's claim to significance is the fact it is the first- and only- community radio station for North Cornwall, and one of the pioneers of the method of combining a commercial style playlist with community presentation- the majority of radio stations playlists are chosen by the presenters themselves. It might be internet radio- but its certainly not three mates with a laptop and a £5 ASDA microphone- it is a proper setup. It is just as Notable as Radio St Austell Bay, despite the fact it broadcasts across the internet. Google NCB Radio Cornwall, you'll find a whole host of articles about the project on the This is Cornwall website. It needs to be verified better, I know that. Please bring the article back and let me know what needs doing to bring it to notability. I note a previous post here about deletion under A7 on a random guys youtube channel- that isnt notable. However a serious community radio station for one of the most impoverished parts of the UK, is. --84.13.249.87 (talk) 18:53, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm willing to restore it to a sandbox page for you, if you let me know what your username is (you posted here as an anonymous IP number.) But what's needed to demonstrate notability on Wikipedia is the use of actual reliable sources, namely other media writing or broadcasting articles or stories about NCB. Vi-Clone

Hi. I see that you deleted the article about “Vi-Clone”. It is significant because: it has won prizes for innovation among others things; in 2008, Gartner named it in its predictions as the future of online customer service; and it has been covered by the media in 15 countries as well as all the television channels in Spain (including news channels). If there is anything else that we need to clarify, please let me know. I would appreciate it if you could bring back the article, please. Viclone (talk) 11:21, 11 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Re:

Apparently you don't watch Murdoch Mysteries. You'd be surprised how many Canadian have guest starred over the four seasons. Too many to list above each season. Some of them don't even get on there, which makes it innacurate. GiantTiger001 (talk) 01:34, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Bearcat, is there still snow in Sudbury? The snow was almost gone and grass dry in Calgary and then it started snowing a few hours ago! But as to why i am here, you have managed to put yourself into a little mess by deleting Guest stars of Murdoch Mysteries and Guest Stars of Murdoch Mysteries a few days ago. As you might notice, one of these is not a red link (at least as of my writing this). Most every edit i have made to improve the articles about Murdoch Mysteries has been reverted as unnecessary or/and unasked for. Reference removal, delinking, article splitting, section blanking. I have tried explaining policy and rules and i even have linked to such at times despite my preference to not do so. Giving feature articles as example of appropriate format and content has failed even though GiantTiger001 actually is a bit of a regular contributor to Smallville.
I don't like tagging things because as reader i find clean up tags most annoying. I prefer to address the concerns rather than direct someone else to do it for me. I am about fed up with trying to improve Murdoch Mysteries. I could just apply a bunch of clean-up tags but i am not so sure we wouldn't end up disagreeing over whether the tags are called for because GiantTiger001 has said a few times that things were fine before i got involved with the collection of articles. Here are the main article and ep list prior to my first edits to them.
You might not be surprised at how many Canadians have guest starred in Murdoch Mysteries since it is Rogers' only prime time scripted programming that is 100% CanCon approved.
Any suggestions on what to do other than embrace it as a perpetual stub-class collection of articles? delirious & lost~hugs~ 08:52, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

CHOQ-FM

Thank you for your comments on my page. I created the Closed-circuit radio article, since the disambiguation page you linked to only talked about CCTV ;) Regarding CHOQ.FM, I edited it in the context of François Asselineau's Afd, a minor french politician who has been interviewed by various local radios. Their description page talk about the "Forces Avenir" award (?) and the Moquettes coquettes band (fr article, former AfD), I think there's ground for creating a few articles. Regards, Comte0 (talk) 10:32, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A source can be gotten from his press book : [6], page 9. The french article survived AfD, therefore, I think I'll go and translate it later. Regards, Comte0 (talk) 10:57, 16 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hong Kong

When you downsize a category and break it down according to countries, e.g., category:orbital roads, please create a category for Hong Kong and don't categorise Hong Kong articles into that for the People's Republic. Hong Kong is a dependent territory with its own administration, similar to that of Greenland, U.S. Virgin Islands, Bermuda, or Turks and Caicos. 58.153.96.209 (talk) 05:56, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

To my understanding all countries, including external territories, get their own categories. The reason that some articles related to the U.S. Virgin Islands or Greenland appear under the United States or the Denmark categories is that those articles are also related to the United States or Denmark. Otherwise they wouldn't be categorised as such.., and definitely not for topics such as orbital roads. And normally articles related to the Turks and Caicos Islands, e.g., would appear in the Caribbean or the Americas categories, and certainly not in the UK categories, if the number of articles is too few. They aren't Ontario, Saskatchewan or Yukon. These are external or dependent territories with their own administrations. Meanwhile, there are four orbital road articles for HK, instead of one. 58.153.96.209 (talk) 08:35, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
With due respect, if I read the edit history correctly, it was you who moved the four articles from category:orbital roads to category:orbital roads in the People's Republic of China. Since you're one of the most active users that spend great deal of time and effort in categorisation (which I appreciate a lot), I believe it is important for you to be correctly and sufficiently informed regarding the status and the international personalities of territories, and the usual practice to deal with them on Wikipedia. As I've said, when there aren't enough articles for a category, a Turks and Caicos topic would normally be stuck with that of Caribbean or the Americas (or the ultimate parent category for that topic, if there's no subcategories by continent or region), instead of that of the UK. You wouldn't categorise a Saskatchewan or a Yukon topic under a United States category just bcos there are too few articles to create a Canadian category, would you? 58.153.96.209 (talk) 08:51, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm afraid it was you who moved all four articles.[7] And yes there are Hong Kong topics that are categorised under People's Republic of China's categories.., but that certainly doesn't apply for topics like roads. Examples of Bermudian topics that are categorised under UK categories include Bermudian passport and Category:Military of Bermuda. I'd be amused to see category:transport in Bermuda being made a subcategory of category:transport in the United Kingdom. 58.153.96.209 (talk) 09:56, 22 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Absalom Greeley

Hi there, Could you give me your reasoning for deleting the Category:Political History of Ontario for Absalom Greeley. My thoughts are: he ran under the Reform banner, but was in reality, a Conservative trying to get into the Family Compact. That and his discreditable conduct, selling his party nomination etc make his interestingto the political history of Ontario for the period. He is also one of a small number of MPPs charged with a criminal offense. I don't mind the Liberal Party category in there, and its a bit of a stretch for Greeley. The article Jeffrey Altergott has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Long unreferenced BLP with possibly defamatory statement, with no claim to notability

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Sadads (talk) 12:06, 30 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List pages

I was under the impression that list pages such as Liberal Party of Canada candidates, 2011 Canadian federal election were simply formatted differently from the earlier versions, and were not restricted vis-a-vis the amount of information that could be covered. I was active on Wikipedia when the 2008 election pages were restructured in the new format, and I simply took the approach of adding extra space when I wanted to create mini-biographical entries (e.g., some of the Quebec and Ontario entries for New Democratic Party candidates, 2008 Canadian federal election). Thus far, no-one has objected to this practice. (Btw, I should clarify that not all of the mini-biographies on the 2008 NDP page were created by me.)

I realize that these mini-biographies have never enjoyed universal support on Wikipedia and, frankly, I don't have as much of a personal interest in retaining them as was the case a few years ago. All the same, I'm not aware of any existing consensus to restrict/remove them. I wouldn't be against some change in the system, but I'm inclined to think that candidate electoral histories and short, CBC-style biographical entries (perhaps limited by word count) would still be broadly acceptable, even if the status quo ante has fallen out of favour. CJCurrie (talk) 02:31, 5 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Per my comments a few days ago, I'll note that I'm having increasingly mixed feelings about the "biographical detail" sections myself. I'll readily acknowledge that, in most cases, the information isn't of paramount importance for an understanding of Canadian political history. I'm also aware that providing too much information about living defeated candidates raises some questions related to WP:BLP. On the other hand, I'm still of the view that it's useful (whether for research purposes or a more generally defined "posterity") to keep some documentary record of these figures (e.g., age (if given), occupation, education, etc.) while avoiding excessive detail or anything that could be construed as invasive of the private lives of the persons in question. My recent additions to the 2011 pages were, as I'm sure you realized, intended as a test run for a "scaled back" approach.
I used to be fairly defensive about these articles; now, I'm much more willing to try to find a workable compromise. I'd still like to keep the better aspects of the old approach, while letting go of its more problematic side.
On a related point ... even if we discard the "biographical details" entirely, there's still the question of what to do with the electoral history sections. I don't think anyone doubts that this information is encyclopedic, even if the older tables make make for a rather awkward fit with the new formatting.
(Btw, I realize that many of the older lists need to be revamped, as do many pages of MPs, MPPs, and cabinet ministers that were created before WP came up with clear standards for citations. I already have a huge backlog of tasks on that front, of which the list pages are only a part.) CJCurrie (talk) 01:26, 15 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Bearcat - you recently deleted the article Ring of Fire (band) under the A7 criteria for deletion. I had previously declined A7 deletion of the article as the band includes two notable members who have their own Wikipedia articles, and they have released three studio albums, two on notable record labels. Deletion of page: Katia Zuccarelli

Hello Bearcat, I recently created the page for Katia Zuccarelli. She is a well-known singer and songwriter from Toronto who has been featured on two international albums. I just checked, and it seems the page was deleted. Please let me know what caused the deletion. I would like edit the page according to your feedback and re-post the page if possible. I didn't keep a copy of the article, would there be a way to retrieve it? Thank you

Hallo,

thanks very much for the check of the categories, but there are others which are wrong, please look there.

thanks again! —Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.189.82.232 (talk) 23:06, 13 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have restored this article for now. Although there may be other places by the same name in Ontario, no one has attempted to write articles on any other, so there is nothing to disambiguate. Pointing the title to Sunset Beach does not help in any case, because there are no Ontario-related titles on that page. What would be helpful would be to determine with more specificity where this particular municipality is located, in order to be able to move the article to a more specific title when disambiguation does become necessary. A tag has been placed on User Kjb40/Sandbox, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.

If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. Extended information and sorting arrows

Thanks for letting me know about this -- I hadn't even noticed that we were using sorting arrows for these templates. I can see how this is more than a bit problematic, though it's still not an insurmountable problem for having extended information (which could be stored in the footnotes section, linked from the "notes" column).

As to the electoral history sections, I take your point that text links could be more convenient, although this could still result in a lot of clutter when the candidate has run in multiple elections. CJCurrie (talk) 23:32, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Mohill gaa requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Hello, Bearcat. You have new messages at Dodger67's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the Talkback or Tb template.

I am unclear as to why you deleted a Canadian poet from the list of Canadian poets. Please reinstate published and award winning Canadian poet Oneal Walters. You had no appropriate grounds to delete him in the first place. You have now also deleted his wikipedia article. I am very unimpressed. Oneal Walters is obviously someone I know personally. I have one of his books and help publish his newsletter each month. Please reinstate the work I have done!! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amalym (talkcontribs) 15:12, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There was absolutely no bias to what was written. It was a factual piece of work. Once followed to the original bio written there is a list of publications. It is about giving a Canadian poet a place for fans to find him and add information.

So it would be ok if someone else interviewed him instead?

I have no less credibility. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amalym (talkcontribs) 18:20, 2 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I appreciate your well written responses but there is verification to include Oneal Walters in the list of Canadian poets. He was interviewed by and has been on the cover of Futureale Magazine, has 2 published books of poetry and has been published by other sources as well. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Amalym (talkcontribs) 23:29, 3 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ted Optiz

Hello,

In Regards to the Article on Ted Optiz I'm Just Trying to get the Article to reflect More than the fact He has been an MP for 3 weeks. Your Comments that I was using his website as a source is incorrect it was his Biography on the website of the Conservative Party of Canada. I Assume the Party does Background checking as to the claims of their Candidates. (It is illegal for someone to impersonate a military officer) or to claim/wear medals that they are not entitled to.

As far as you saying that you can't have lists (That you must write in all prose) of medals earned by military personnel or civilians for that matter is hogwash show me in the rules where it is specifically forbidden.

A while ago you made changes to the article I had written on the above.

I have no objection to any alterations you may have made to the text but I had left several spaces so that when one looked at the article the images were laid out in an orderly fashion.

Now the images seem to be someone scattered about and the article looks clumsily put together. If you would be kind enough to have a look you will see what I mean or I hope that you will.

If you agree and can put the images back in the way they were laid out before I would be very grateful.

From me to You

As the Member of Parliament please don't question when I took office, please look at the 'draft' profile on the Parliament of Canada website you linked to. Where it says "Years of Service" it currently says 25 days. Today is May 27th. Please STOP removing biographical information I am adding about MYSELF. I really don't have time to keep adding things OVER AND OVER again, nor do I currently have the time to pull out certificates, diplomas, etc scan them and add them. You and everyone else will just need to trust that I'm adding correct information, believe me its certainly in my own interest to do so and I'd be torn apart for not doing so. That being said I do appreciate the creation of the page in the first place (even though there used to be a page and it was twice taken down by others in the past year despite my efforts) and the addition of the electoral record, feel free to continue adding things that enhance the page. You've made a hefty contribution to Wikipedia and as a user it is definitely appreciated, regardless of my objections. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Backblastnet (talkcontribs) 04:34, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Mike Sullivan and election term starts

I was using the House of Commons website for this, the Parlinfo site even says his term starts on May 2. BTW by your understanding of when a term starts, it would be June 2, not May 30 or May 31.--Abebenjoe (talk) 04:40, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So here's the citation that I offered at the time, [8], and here's the link you added at the bottom of the article, [9]. They both agree his term starts on May 2.--Abebenjoe (talk) 04:44, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The official House website dates aren't temporary, because when you look at the constituency profiles, they also list the previous E-days. If the format is when the House sits, then I will not perpetuate an error that someone else made, and will put the correct date, which I understand to be June 2, s per the House of Commons website [10]. So even if Sullivan is the only one with June 2, it's correct by your standards, or May 2, by the House of Commons standards. As a further example, the losing incumbents are not considered MPs on E-day, check the Constituency profiles for more proof.--Abebenjoe (talk) 05:08, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From Government of Canada's website on when an MP is considered the member and when their term ends.[11]
3.4.2. When does an elected candidate officially become a Member of Parliament?
It is not entirely clear at what precise moment a successful candidate in a general election becomes a Member of Parliament. One possible date is the :date on which a returning officer declares elected the candidate who obtained the largest number of votes in his or her constituency. Another :possibility is the date on which the Chief Electoral Officer sends to the Clerk of the House of Commons the certified list of members elected to serve :in the House of Commons.
In any case, section 128 of the Constitution Act, 1867 requires MPs to swear or affirm allegiance to the Queen before taking their seats in the House of :Commons. The swearing in is normally done by the Clerk of the House of Commons prior to the opening of Parliament. It occurs on an individual basis at :the convenience of the MP.
All MPs (not just the newly elected) must be sworn in.

5.1.1 What is the status of Members of the House of Commons following dissolution?

After dissolution, and the issue of writs for a general election, there are legally no Members of the House of Commons.

There is no clear authority for the preceding statement; however, the Parliament of Canada Act provides in section 69:

For the purposes of the allowances payable under sections 55 and 63, a person who, immediately before a dissolution of the House of Commons, was a member thereof shall be deemed to continue to be a member of the House until the date of the next following general election.

The above “deeming provision” in the Parliament of Canada Act is solely for the purposes of salaries, some additional allowances and benefits, and certain other services.30 It does not imply that a former Member retains that status until the date of the next general election.

The conclusion that dissolution terminates the office of Member of the House of Commons is supported by J. P. Joseph Maingot. He describes the circumstances in which a person ceases to be a Member of the House of Commons, and states that these include a warrant for the issue of a writ for the election of a new Member.31

The implications of a person’s legally ceasing to be a Member of the House of Commons can be seen outside of Parliament. One significant implication involves the Privacy Act, section 8(2) of which provides the following exemption from the provisions of the Act:

8(2) Subject to any other Act of Parliament, personal information under the control of a government institution may be disclosed …

 (g) to a member of Parliament for the purpose of assisting the individual to whom the information relates in resolving a problem;

In other words, personal information may be disclosed to a Member of Parliament. This exemption makes sense in terms of the constituency work that is an inherent part of a Member’s job. The Treasury Board Secretariat has addressed the question of what happens after dissolution. Its information notice entitled “Scope of Paragraph 8(2)(g) of the Privacy Act upon Dissolution of Parliament” states:

Upon dissolution of Parliament, members of the House of Commons lose their status and title. Consequently, personal information under the control of a government institution can no longer be provided to them pursuant to paragraph 8(2)(g) of the Act. Furthermore, this paragraph cannot be invoked following the election until the new members of the House of Commons have been sworn in.

Former Members of Parliament may obtain information about an individual who has requested their assistance with the consent of the individual. In special circumstances, institutions may consider disclosing personal information to former Members pursuant to sub-paragraph 8(2)(m)(ii) of the Privacy Act which permits disclosure “where in the opinion of the head of the institution… disclosure would clearly benefit the individual to whom the information relates.” Note that subsection 8(5) requires that institutions notify the Privacy Commissioner of the disclosures made under paragraph 8(2)(m).32 --Abebenjoe (talk) 05:21, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So MPs, and this is how I've always interrupted it, and it seems that is also how the House of Commons sees it, lose their status as MPs when the Parliament is dissolved through the dropping of the writ, the term ends there. So, the argument goes that E-day is the day that the new MP starts, with the swearing in only a formality. But since we are dealing with Westminster rules, they are conventions and not really written down rules. That is why the HoC website cites E-day as the first day of the term. June 2 second will be used mostly to swear members in, though members of the cabinet are already sworn in. As an aside, the Prime Minister never ceases to be the Prime Minister when parliament is dissolved, unlike his cabinet and fellow MPs.~--Abebenjoe (talk) 05:30, 27 May 2011 (UTC)--Abebenjoe (talk) 05:30, 27 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I proposed the equivalent article at Wikipedia in Spanish for Speedy Deletion because of blatant advertising and it was deleted. Jim Chapman (Canadian)

Hey Bearcat, I noticed that you "speedy deleted" Jim Chapman (Canadian) because it was already as per a deletion discussion. The text of the article is largely the same as before, but the reason for deletion no longer applies. The original was deleted because "All of the sources cited either fail 'trivial mentions' or WP:SPS." I researched for days, and found dozens of non-trivial secondary sources, including the globe and mail, london free press, and a program on the discovery channel. I feel that, even if this does not end up being enough to keep the article up, it should be enough to warrant a new deletion discussion. If the problem is not enough secondary sources still, there are more, theyre just more difficult to find. For example, he was interviewed by the BBC at one point. Please let me know. Goodbucket (talk) 00:13, 30 May 2011 (UTC) It has been pointed out to me that the problem might be that most of the new sources are not web sources. If this is the case, I do not know how to proceed, since I do not own the rights to the newspapers in question. I do, however, have physical copies of each of them, if that would help. Thanks, Goodbucket (talk) 01:11, 30 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Janis Babson Nomination for Deletion

Hello Bearcat.

I am the creator of this article. The article was created because in doing research on organ donations, I came across this child who still after a half century, through her life story in the two books, has inspired countless others to donate organs upon this own deaths. The article is not nor was it ever intended to sell books.

I am attempting to get valid references on the book rewrite in 2011, however, the only sources I have currently found are sites that sell it. It is not my intention, nor the intention of Wikepedia to support commercial enterprises. I also intend to do some additions to the article with further references concerning her continuing notability.

My main concern is not having the article deleted until I can complete this work. I placed this article for review was it was still in my pagers for editing, but after several days of not a single input or suggested improvement, I moved the page. I note that a relative of the child has posted on the edit pages, however, this article is not about her family, but her contributions, past and present.

I need you assistance is either giving more time or moving it back to an edit status rather than a completed article if that is what it takes.

Thanks. Bobm217 (talk) 03:28, 31 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

However, my article was deleted within 30mins+- of the alert before I could even have a chance to make any corrections. I then edited the article and re-posted but now it's deleted again. Please help me by teaching me how to post an article that honors this person, Doug Willmore, who makes such a huge difference and has such an impact in this world. Thank you. Appreciate your help and I look forward to learning from you. Thank YOU!

Categorization per WP:Category

Hi Bearcat, I've reinserted most, but not all of the categories you lopped off of Volta Laboratory and Bureau, which was almost completely responsible for the development of the phonograph industry after Edison abandoned his own invention. Besides their work on the phonograph, the Volta Associates were responsible for a wide array of other very notable discoveries, inventions and achievements, such as the first modern form of optical telecommunications on which all fibre-optical communications are based on (about 60% of all telecommunication transmissions today), all of which merit categorization per WP:Categorization which states amongst other things:

 • Each article should be placed in all of the most specific categories to which it logically belongs. [emphasis is mine]
 • Categorize articles by characteristics of the topic, not characteristics of the article....
 • It should be clear from verifiable information in the article why it was placed in each of its categories. Use the {Category unsourced} template if you find an article in a category that is not shown by sources to be appropriate, or the {Category relevant?} template if the article gives no clear indication for inclusion in a category.

I have not reinstated Discovery and invention controversies, Office equipment, and Bridgeport, Connecticut which are only peripherally mentioned in the article. Best: HarryZilber (talk) 14:33, 5 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you and more Questions/Requests

Hi Bearcat,

Re: Doug Willmore aka Douglas Gaard Willmore Article

I posted a message for you yesterday but I can't find it today. Please accept my apology if this is a duplicate.

I got your reply to my questions/requests. I can't find that communication either so I'm going off memory. Please let me know if I missed anything. Here's my reply and additional questions/requests.

Thank you for your comments. I totally got your view. Yes, you are correct. The content you saw were a collection of content found on the Internet (accompanied by url links as the source of the content). My second action item was to interview folks about Doug Willmore. After which, I plan to draft up content based on my research and interview. Once I've completed the first draft, my plan was to request for feedback from folks for accuracy and appropriateness of the content. Now, that I know of you, you'll be one of those folks I'll be asking for feedback, if you are available and willing.

Next, I totally got what you are saying about the content you saw sounding promotional. I totally get it. Thank you for your feedback.

I also completely get what you are saying about how simply stating that someone makes a difference and is worthy and honorable of a Wikipedia article from someone (unknown) like me is not enough to justify an article page.

Who would be the person in charge of saying who is notable for a Wikipedia page or not?

After Doug, I’d also like to create article pages for numerous other folks: 1. Doug Willmore’s father, at the age of 27, was the youngest hire of President John F. Kennedy’s to his cabinet. His father started the first Graduate (and still is the largest Grad school to-date in the nation) for Federal Employees. He taught to the likes of Bobby Kennedy at this Graduate school as well. There’s a lot of history in Doug Willmore’s history as well that I’ll be researching next. 2. Once I have permission from these folks, I’d also like post articles about two Mayors and perhaps a few City Councils. 3. I’m gathering information about a female journalist during WW2 in a third world country.

It seems like you said that a City Manager does not warrant an article on Wikipedia or certain City Managers are not notable of a Wikipedia page article. Is that accurate? If yes, who gets to say if Doug Willmore is notable or which certain City Managers are notable? And who gets to say whether the rest of the folks I wish to create articles for (as I listed above) are notable and worthy of a Wikipedia page?

Thank you for your help. Appreciate it.

How do you do a pronunciation of someones name on Wikipedia? I noticed someone put [SHOO] after Ted Hsu name which I didn't think the format was right, and if it was it should have been SHOE. Newfoundlander&Labradorian (talk) 12:00, 8 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Comment about some of your category changes

I noticed that you were removing a couple of categories that seem to be incorrect. I noticed you removed People from Texas from several articles stating that the article already had a subcat. Saying that I am a Texas State judge or a Texas lawyer, IMO, is different than saying I am from that state. I could be a Judge in Texarcana but live on the other side of the border in a different state. Not a huge deal to me but I think it might rub some people the wrong way to see that particular catetgory removed. --Kumioko (talk) 15:16, 10 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Good catch on the correct spelling of "Crème de la Crème", that is indeed how it's listed on the CD cover. I originally cut and pasted the track list from Amazon, where it's incorrectly spelled as "Créme de la Créme". iTunes has the same incorrect spelling. Robman94 (talk) 22:47, 11 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Well, for what it's worth, I hadn't actually seen the CD cover yet (didn't even know the album existed until I saw the article, because embarrassingly I haven't actually paid much attention to his last few albums) — but I'm familiar enough with French spelling to know that the word crème has an è in it instead of an é :-) Bearcat (talk) 00:26, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Right, but just because that's how it should be spelled doesn't mean that's how the artist spelled it, as they are known to use their "artistic license" to change things like that. When I saw your change, I double checked at Amazon and then iTunes and I was thinking I should revert it, but then I went to my car to check the CD sleeve and sure enough, Peter used the correct letter and Amazon/iTunes got it wrong. If you got put off by albums like Dust then it might be time to come back, as Ninth is a return to form. Amazon is streaming the album here. He's also a lot more comfortable with the Bauhaus legacy now, so you might also want to check him out in concert if you get the chance. I saw him play in Chicago a few months ago and he was in great form. Robman94 (talk) 01:09, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not that they put me off, so much as they passed right by without my even knowing that they existed. In my defense, the radio stations I was listening to at the time weren't playing him and the whole MP3-blog thing hadn't really taken off yet — and he was one of the artists who just kind of fell off my radar for a while because I just wasn't finding out about it when he had a new album. Bearcat (talk) 01:29, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
To be honest, I lost track of him for a while after the Deep album, and I lost track of all music pretty much over the last 10 years (raising a family, etc) but after I recently got back into going to gigs, I saw him play in Chicago where he previewed the album, so I was pumped to buy it the day it came out. If you check out the Amazon stream, I'd be curious to know what you think of it. Robman94 (talk) 01:36, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Category change in threeasfour article

threeASFOUR are three fashion designers who comprise the company. They operate in the same manner as fashion designers who happen to be one person. The group of the three actively design high fashion apparel, and show collections as do other fashion designers. The category fashion designers should be readded to the article page, and the category clothing companies of the United States should be deleted. The category high fashion brands should be added to the page. Could you please consider reverting your recent edit to categories in this article, and add the category high fashion brands. Thank you for your consideration. Doc2234 (talk) 12:04, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

 • Thank you for your response on my talk page. I have two concerns: 1. threeASFOUR’s business is fashion design. They are not a clothing company. If used in the article, the category clothing companies of the United States would mislead the reader as to the nature of threeASFOUR’s business. They are professional designers and design clothes and sell them to individuals and stockists, clothing retailers. Typically, they contract out the fabrication of the apparel. As I said, the reader would get the wrong impression, concerning what threeASFOUR does. 2. There is no category for fashion design firms, or houses. Although most fashion designers are established as individuals, there are a few occurrences of partnerships. In the category for architects, many more firms are typically formed through partnerships and larger corporations. There is a category for architecture firms. Would it be worthwhile to create a category for fashion design firms or houses? It would not be highly populated. What do you think? Doc2234 (talk) 00:43, 14 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion of Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu

Hi Bearcat,

You are correct to guess WP:COI. Let me know the right way to declare it.

In regards to the deleted page, is this the right place to start a discussion about it?

My thought was that, in addition to the various news articles, in various languages, related to the failed candidacy, there were also numerous news articles related to other environmental activism.

If it were only the candidacy, I would acknowledge that Wikipedia policy would say not notable. But when there are newspaper reports over the course of years on more than one event, my reading is that crosses the line to WP:SIGCOV.

Bobagem (talk) 20:13, 16 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Newbie question: Is there a way of conducting a conversation where we are both writing on the same page? Awkward that my side of the conversation is on your page and yours on mine.

Re: Notability. There were a great many news articles that extended beyond Toronto. The CCAMU articles related to Eastern Ontario. Uranium mining affects First Nations, and thus qualifies, in a way, as "international". The Sunshine Walk articles came from numerous cities on the way from Toronto to Kingston to Ottawa. This would be my answer if WP:N said anything about "international", but it does not. It says

 • "address the subject directly": check
 • "reliable sources": newspapers, check
 • "independent of the subject": check

Re: COI. "Editors with COIs who wish to edit responsibly are strongly encouraged to follow Wikipedia policies and best practices scrupulously." I agree that there were not enough separate, independent sources documenting Howarth's notability. As a newbie, I'm the recommendation to disclose COI now that I now of it. I agree that WP:COI adds a layer of suspicion to my interpretation of the rules. But I believe that I am following Wikipedia policies and best practices when I assert that Adriana Mugnatto-Hamu is notable on the basis of newspaper articles about her from more than one city in relation to more than one newsworthy event.

Bobagem (talk) 00:01, 18 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You state that notability is a quality of how an article is written, not a quality of the topic of the article. WP:N says otherwise: "Within Wikipedia, notability is an inclusion criterion based on the encyclopedic suitability of an article topic." My understanding is that an article can fail to demonstrate notability for a topic that is in fact notable. That's getting a bit off topic, though, as I believe that the article did establish notability.

The Sunshine Walk event involved two people walking from Toronto to Ottawa (and one on bike). Adriana was one of those two people. The articles, from several cities, are about her -- it isn't a case of being tangentially mentioned.

Media coverage during the election included two radio shows that were specifically focused on her (Voces Latinas and Radio Canada International), and a couple of articles that focused on "underdogs" fighting apparently unwinnable battles. So again, they aren't articles about "here are your four candidates in this riding", but rather "here is an interesting candidate".

It is true that the biographical details are quoted from Green Party websites. My understanding is that noncontroversial life-facts like that are okay even coming straight from the subject.

I'm feeling at a little bit of a disadvantage here because I don't have access to the article or the sources list. I'm pretty sure, for example, that I didn't have the link to the Radio Canada International program at the time, in which she's one of the headlines on an internationally broadcast Radio program.

Bobagem (talk) 03:38, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Again, hard for me to discuss what percentage of links said exactly what when I don't have access to the article. Could I ask you the favor of sending me the deleted article?

There's a small chance I'll look at the references and think I want to escalate this discussion. But the greater chance is that I'll squirrel it away for some possible future date when Adriana's notability is less controversial.

Thanks for taking the time to engage in this discussion.

Launi Skinner deletion

Hi Bearcat: You recently deleted an article on Launi Skinner (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Launi_Skinner) citing A7 (notability). I would ask that you reconsider the deletion and reinstate the page. The article itself was written in a manner consistent with other notable male Canadian business leaders (e.g. Darren Entwistle). Ms Skinner is a notable Canadian businesswoman--one of the few to currently lead a Canadian financial institution (one of the five largest credit unions in Canada) as Chief Executive Officer and one who has recently/previously served as the highest ranking woman leader at Starbucks (see http://money.cnn.com/galleries/2007/fortune/0709/gallery.women_to_watch.fortune/4.html).

I would ask that you reconsider the deletion and help ensure that diversity and balance of the Canadian business leadership landscape be reflected in Wikipedia.

Brome Lake

Greetings Bearcat. With this edit at List of cities in Canada, you opted to change the entry for Lac-Brome to Brome Lake. Notwithstanding that Brome Lake, Quebec is the name of it ville's article, as well as WP:ENGLISH, the StatCan source that feeds Quebec's list of cities uses "Lac-Brome". Any opposition to me changing Brome Lake to Lac-Brome per the source?
Note that there was previous discussion with another user on how to present the name of this community within the context of this list article. Please advise. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 05:02, 19 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What you did in your edit, which you've described in detail to me, is what I meant by "change". Pardon the brevity above.
I interpret your mention of "double-barrelling the list" as presenting both the English and French names, one of which being wikilinked, and the other not wikilinked but within parentheses. If this is correct, by no means am I suggesting it be reverted back to this format.
I'm inquiring if "Lac-Brome" should be used within the wikilink instead of "Brome Lake" due to the spelling used in the reference. If a reader wants to verify the population at the source, the reader won't find it due to its English spelling within the wikilink.
I liken this situation with using "Kitchener–Waterloo" as the name of the metropolitan area at Template:Largest Metropolitan Areas of Canada when the name of the CMA per the sourced population data is simply "Kitchener". Regarding this situation, see my inquiry here that has yet to yield a response. Your input on that discussion would also be appreciated. Hwy43 (talk) 04:43, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with your comments. Since you don't fundamentally object, I will change it (and only it) to Brome Lake (Lac-Brome) to allow navigation at the StatCan reference. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 05:04, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you are a participant of the WikiProject Quebec.

The Outline of Quebec was created a few days ago and is under vigorous development. It fills a gap in Wikipedia's set of outlines. It is the 3rd outline to date about a Canadian province/territory.

Outlines form one of the subsystems of Wikipedia's contents navigation system. For more information on outlines, see Wikipedia:Outlines and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outlines.

The goals for the Outline of Quebec is to complete it to as high a standard of quality as possible, and to make it even better than the Outline of Saskatchewan and the Outline of British Columbia.

Once the Outline of Quebec is completed, it will provide an important example to others creating outlines for the remaining provinces and territories of Canada.

Please take a look at the outline to see if you can notice (and fill in) any missing topics. Pictures would also be nice (the rarer and the more interesting, the better).

Thank you.

Deletion of page: Kieran Strange

Fairly certain she meets notability requirements for artists - with articles about her published in more than one credible news source over a period of several months indicating not a one-time moment of notability, and is likely to become even more notable as time progresses. The speedy deletion request was put in as I first created the page and was still in the process of building it. Please advise what makes the article not meet the requirements for inclusion on wikipedia - I felt I had explained why she was notable esp as one of very few un-signed artists to get a prestigious online nomination - as the article cited, she beat out Lady Gaga. Speedy deletion nomination of Saans

A tag has been placed on Saans, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing no content to the reader. Please note that external links, "See also" section, book reference, category tag, template tag, interwiki link, rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article don't count as content. Moreover, please add more verifiable sources, not only 3rd party sources. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content. You may wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself. If you plan to expand the article, contest the deletion by clicking on the button that looks like this: which appears inside of the speedy deletion () tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the article's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. 82.14.62.203 (talk) 14:39, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

References to hobby websites

Bearcat, I maintain a couple websites based on hobbies of personal interest. One of these is Alberta Population. The population data published on this website for municipalities and unincorporated communites come from primarily two sources – Statistics Canada federal census results and the Alberta Municipal Affairs (AMA) official population list (OPL) annual publication (consolidation of latest AMA-accepted municipal census results or federal census results for Alberta municipalities).
The pre-1996 federal census results were all compiled from hard copy StatCan publications, while the 1996-2006 results were all compiled from the StatCan website. The municipal census results for municipalities, up to 2010, were compiled from the OPLs posted on AMA's website.
A year ago, an IP user swept across Canada adding population history tables to articles for Canada's larger municipalities. Within Alberta, I followed the user's edits with "citation needed" tags, despite that I could add references to verify these tables from my own website. I didn't add references from my website as I was apprehensive that this may qualify as promotion or conflict of interest, or may contravene other WP policies/guidelines.
Can you advise whether adding inline citations from my website to verify uncited historic population tables would be a contravention WP policies/guidelines? Note that I receive no compensation of any means through maintaining this website. Cheers, Hwy43 (talk) 20:46, 2 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]
