Télétoon (stylized as TÉLÉTOON) is a Canadian French language Category A specialty channel that specializes in animation programming. Télétoon is owned by Teletoon Canada Inc; a 50/50 partnership between Astral Media and Corus Entertainment. The name is a portmanteau of television and cartoon and has no parent connection to the television channel in France of the same name.

Télétoon is the French counterpart to the English television channel, Teletoon.

History

Licensed in 1996 by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC), the French-language channel was the first to launch on September 8, 1997. It was originally owned by a consortium made up of various other Canadian specialty services and producers; The Family Channel Inc. acting as managing partner at 53.3% (Astral Media & WIC), YTV Canada Inc. at 26.7% (Shaw Communications), Cinar and Nelvana with 10% each. Through various acquisitions over the years, ownership resulted in both Astral Media and Corus Entertainment owning a 50% stake in the service.

The original Télétoon logo used from 1997-2007. In the station's early years, the red border wasn't there, and sometimes it appeared blue, light green or orange instead of red.

On February 5, 2007, Télétoon's network layout was dramatically changed as was its website, and Le Détour's website was moved to teletoon.com, and the aesthetic appearance of both the normal block and Le Détour changed.

On September 6, 2011, Télétoon's network layout changed to reflect one of their owners Astral Media's 50th Anniversary and to reflect introduction of the Digital television in Canada. Télétoon Rétro and Télétoon la nuit were not affected in network layouts.[1]

On March 4, 2013, Corus Entertainment announced that it would acquire Astral Media's 50% ownership interest in Teletoon, Télétoon, Teletoon Retro (English and French) and Cartoon Network, the purchase is in relation to Bell Media's pending takeover of Astral (which had earlier been rejected by the CRTC in October 2012, but was restructured to allow the sale of certain Astral Media properties in order to allow the purchase to clear regulatory hurdles).[2]

Programming

Most of the shows on Télétoon are dubbed from their English counterpart[citation needed]. Originally, both stations had similar schedules, airing the same episode of the same program at the same time. Nowadays, the scheduling is not always the same, because Télétoon carries some translated programs that its English counterpart does not, as they are on other cable networks. Many of the shows, such as The Simpsons and King of the Hill, are dubbed using local voice over actors from Quebec, while others, such as Naruto and virtually all series originating from Cartoon Network, are dubbed in France and imported.

Also, unlike the English version, programming during the day is commercial-free (other than for promos); since much of the French Télétoon's audience is in Quebec. Quebec provincial law prohibits paid commercials during children's programming, which is generally the morning and afternoon hours.

However, unlike Adult Swim, although there was a strong early commitment to air diverse and international programming, as well as the ability to air a great majority of material uncut, Télétoon Détour refused to incorporate a single anime series until March 3, 2008.
