Liberation of Rabbi Dovber Schneuri

History

The date is significant within the Chabad Hasidic movement. Rabbi Dovber Schneuri, the second Rebbe of Chabad (also known as the "Mitteler Rebbe" in Yiddish) was accused of being a revolutionary in Czarist Russia.[1] He was arrested on the fictitious charge of sending money to Eretz Yisrael to aid and abet enemies of the Czar.[2]

On this date in 1826 (5587) the Mitteler Rebbe was released from his imprisonment in the City of Vitebsk.

Commemoration

This day is regarded as an important festival of the Chabad movement, and has thus been celebrated ever since by Chabad Hasidim with joyous farbrengens.
