WELCOME TO THE PAGE OF OBERRANKS

This editor is a
Senior Editor
and is entitled to display this Rhodium
Editor Star
.

I have created this account for the editing of articles on military ranks, medals, and badges. I pledge to adhere to the polices of WP:NPA and WP:CIV in my editing and will do my best to adhere to WP:NOR when adding material to this encyclopedia.

Everything on Wikipedia is for fun. Assume that everything you write will be made fun of, heavily edited, and eventually deleted. Take nothing personally and remember that this is just the internet and not the real world. If you want your work taken seriously, publish it professionally and do not post it here.

THE LAW OF HUSNOCK: As discussions with OberRanks intensify, the probability of mentioning Husnock will increase to 100%

Advice for new Users

My new user badge from 2004

Having been on this site now for several years, I've seen the good, the bad, and the ugly and like to think I know how people tend to think and act on Wikipedia. The points below are advice I once gave to a new user and, as it might help others, also chose to post it here. It's just advice, but I think good advice.

  • Create a User Page: Do this right away. Red link user names tend to turn people off. They tend to think they are vandals or otherwise here to start trouble. Don't even get me started on anon ip edits.
  • Avoid being Single Purpose: Being labeled as a single purpose account will draw suspicion and criticism one does not need. SPA labeling tends to happen if a brand new user, with no edits to their name, shows up on a highly active article and starts making major changes or blanking entire sections. Try to edit several non-controversial articles before taking on the big fish.
  • Don't flaunt Credentials: I've been very guilty of this. Avoid saying who you are in the real world and especially advertising education or military service. I've seen many a user fall hard and fast showing up on talk pages demanding respect because they have a degree or that they held a certain rank in the military. I was one of them and learned the hard way.
  • Don't Edit War: Goes without saying. New users who start edit warring, blanking articles, or violating WP:3RR tend to get targeted by others and kicked off the site real fast.
  • Have fun!: This can be a fun site if you make it so. So, yes, have fun!
