A jukebox musical is a stage musical or musical film featuring the songs of one or more popular music acts instead of original songs. Usually an original plot and characters are created for jukebox musicals, with the songs used to illustrate the emotions different characters are feeling at different times. Sometimes, however, jukebox musicals function as a biography of the artist(s) in question, like Jersey Boys (2005) and Beautiful (2013). In such cases, some of the songs can be diegetic, meaning that they are performed within the world of the play or film. Works in which all of the music is diegetic, however, such as a biographical film about a singer who is simply shown performing their songs, are generally not considered jukebox musicals.[1]

Some jukebox musicals include previously-unreleased material. Examples include the Beatles' films A Hard Day's Night (1964), which Andrew Sarris described as "the Citizen Kane of jukebox musicals", Help! (1965) and Magical Mystery Tour (1967). The stage musicals 42nd Street (1984) and Xanadu (2007) are both adaptations of musical films that turned their source material into something more like a jukebox musical by adding to the score other well-known songs written by the musical films' songwriters.

Although jukebox musicals had achieved success for years (for example the 1989 musical Buddy – The Buddy Holly Story), a surge in popularity was led by the success of Mamma Mia! (1999), built around the music of ABBA.[2]

The term "jukebox musical" dates at least to 1962,[3] based on the word "jukebox", which dates to around 1939. However, the general genre—motion pictures consisting largely of hit recordings—dates to the 1940s and 1950s.[citation needed] Films considered early examples of jukebox musicals include An American in Paris (1951), Singin' in the Rain (1952), Rock, Rock, Rock (1956), Rock Around the Clock (1956) and Juke Box Rhythm (1959).
