logos

Could you please tell me in simple terms how I might upload a logo from a school's website onto the wikipedia article. I had been told previously that properly filling out this tamplate is sufficient. Absolutely, you can use logos in articles describing their subject under fair-use guidelines. To do so, you need to include both a copyright template (which you have already done) and a fair use rationale. A non-free use rationale is more specific than the simple description above. Among other things, it needs to explicitly state which article it's used for, as well as provide a justification. PROD

Hello. It seems to me that "PROD is only applicable to mainspace articles, lists, and disambiguation pages; it cannot be used with redirects, userspace pages, templates, categories, or pages in any other namespace". Betrayal (album)

I think I see where the confusion came in for this article. The article was moved to the current page in 2011, with the "original" version deleted in 2008. THat original version however was for a completely different band, and has no connection to this article. I removed the tags on the page for that reason. Yes, if you want to try to create the page again, you may do so. Just make sure to delete the #REDIRECT line on top. Tagging for deletion is not an automated process, it is done by a human. WTDY-FM vandalism and subsequent locking

A10 requires the content to be substantially the same. Kindergarten discusses the concept in various countries, Kindergarten readiness discusses the educational prerequisites, which are totally different. That the article was created by meatpuppets is unfortunate, but my reading of WP:MEAT is one of "do not use meatpuppets to attempt to influence consensus" (unlike the stricter guidance for sockpuppets). A Google search reveals many reliable sources, including government organizations and peer reviewed studies, so notability is met. The article is not well written, that's for sure, but it's well enough that that alone is not enough for deletion. What I did was retarget the mainspace redirect Catholic or Roman Catholic? to Roman Catholic (term) as well as the corresponding talk pages. I did not edit any of the redirects whose origins were in project or project talk space. I believe that WP:XNR's should be avoided for any search term with even the slightest plausibility, as users who end up in project space will be thoroughly confused. It is not too difficult to imagine a user unfamiliar with the two terms searching for this question. Therefore, I retargeted it to a related article. – Train2104 (t • c) 03:38, 9 April 2017 (UTC)

I realized the error, and requested they be speedily deleted in lieu of redirecting them to an article not directly related to the essay. I think when I originally moved the essay from user space to project space, I made a mistake, and moved it to article space first. I noticed this edit and true enough it now has sources. However, there is an issue with the underlying original image which is a painting that was photographed and released freely on Flickr without any evidence of permission from the original artist, as I stated in the post at WP:MCQ. Allowing the file for use on Wikipedia only is a criteria for immediate deletion, unless fair use can be claimed. In order to use content on Wikipedia, it must be freely licensed. In other words, you must allow anyone to do anything with your image, including alter it or use it for commercial purposes, so long as they give you credit. Running into problems passing copyright protocol

RE: I got Ticket number for the file uploaded, but the image got deleted. It appears that the copyright holders permission did not reach you, so I forwarded her cc to permissions-en@wikimedia.org from yahoo account I registered with wiki. However I tried it 3 times and each time it came back with a message "undeliverable - no such e-mail address" What shall I do? I got Ticket number, so you must have received something from us. You say that you have the permission of the copyright owner, and also that it's fair use (which implies you do not have permission of the copyright owner). If he agrees to release the photo under the CC-BY-SA license, which allows anyone to use the image for any purpose (including modification and commercial use), please have him email permissions-en@wikimedia.org (see WP:DCP and WP:CONSENT). If he does not agree to such a license, the file will have to be deleted, since fair use images of living people are not allowed in the vast majority of cases (since anyone can conceivably take a photo of him and release it under a free license). – Train2104 (t • c) 16:47, 30 April 2017 (UTC)

Wikipedia's non-free content criteria are stricter than the US fair use standards. However, both require that we respect commercial opportunities for the work. What this means is that if someone is in the business of selling or licensing images, such as a stock photo service or news agency, we cannot use their images. If we did, we would become an alternate source people could use for their work, possibly depriving them of revenue. Therefore, such files must be immediately deleted. In addition, some of the files you uploaded were deleted twice in the past because their use wasn't critical to understanding the article. The people depicted are still alive, and the trophy has not be destroyed. Therefore, it is possible to create a free image, so we cannot use non-free media here. The threshold is could be created, not exists. Finally, you mention that you have received permission from the newspaper. That may address the first problem, but unless they gave you permission to release them under a free license (which allows anyone to use the photos, including commercially), the second problem still exists. Thus, these files must be deleted. Content licensed a non-commercial use only license is prohibited on Wikipedia unless it is treated as non-free content, in which case it must meet the criteria. Photos of living people are almost replaceable, so such photos almost always fail the criteria. @Jkokavec: My goal is not to cause any disruption, nor am I trying to make a point. I am merely trying to enforce WP:NFCC, which must be done strictly because of its legal implications. There are two criteria that these images clearly violate, in my belief:

• 2 (respect for commercial opportunities): By posting a high-resolution scan of a newspaper article, you have established Wikipedia as an alternative source for that article, which could possibly deprive the newspaper of revenue. This is a strict standard, and the only allowable exception is the use of content for commentary about itself. (example: Bliss (image))
• 9 (contextual significance) Though you assert that it is a way of showing that the island has received media attention, it is not the only way of doing so. Merely citing the newspaper articles, for instance, would achieve the same effect. See Wikipedia:Non-free content#Meeting the contextual significance criterion for notes on this.

My next step will be to nominate these files for deletion at WP:FFD, which allows other users to have a say. Whatever the consensus of that discussion is, I will respect it, however, I highly doubt it will go in your favor. Umm... I don't know what to say about Jkokavec's labeling Train2104 "disruptive". He worked very hard on image-related matters, and I thank him for that. As Train2104 said, best to take the gallery to FFD, especially when, in my experience, the pre-FFD dialogue is filled with disagreements. Well, not all pre-FFD discussions would contain disagreements. In this case, seems that there are disagreements. To me, the gallery of non-free images don't add understanding to the topic. Rather they are well suited to other websites primarily dedicated to the island. However, if you don't want them removed, then FFD is the way to go. • You can see new files on Special:NewFiles. You can now pick which dates you want to see files from. [2]
• When you read Wikipedia on a mobile device the first paragraph now comes before the infobox. [3]

Most of the ones I've seen look like people get their straight and curly brackets mixed up when creating a new page, so they inadvertently create a new page in template space. Backlognav etc. templates

Hi, sorry about the padding differences, I'll be happy to keep working on that. There are two technical reasons for my change, however. First, accessibility. The templates output data table elements on something that is not a data table, which causes problems for screen readers. Second, mobile view. @Debresser: That an article is a hoax is a serious allegation to make. We already make the template red and different from the other problem ones, for this reason. I believe that entire articles or sections whose accuracy is questioned (as opposed to merely style, tone, or small doubts where {{cn}} is more appropriate), should not be indexed. CSD, PROD, and AFD tags already apply NOINDEX, so there is precedent for NOINDEXing when an editor has expressed serious doubts about an article's suitability. (Note: NOINDEX has no effect in article-space when an article is over 90 days old.) – Train2104 (t • c) 00:47, 23 June 2017 (UTC)

Re:Messages left at my talk page

Hi Train2104. I hope you are well. I had left a message on one of the talk pages of the files that I uploaded, which have now been deleted without any further warning. This seems counter to what was suggested on my talk page and the speedy delete template, which is that I could contest the licensing issue (and get a response, I assumed). The file talk page is now gone too, and I cannot see if anyone replied there. On the talk page I had explained quite clearly why the files were appropriately licensed.

I don't want to upload the same pictures with the same licensing and be left with them deleted again and myself blocked from editing. Please could you advise me on what to do. The files I uploaded were licensed and attributed in exactly the way the file upload wizard suggested to do, and also according to what my colleagues (the original authors of the pictures) wished, whom I talked with about this in person.

In addition, please upload the highest available resolution of that file. If you want, you can upload one, reply here, and I'll look over it. Uploaded with incorrect copyright

Hey there, I'm an old wikisaur and don't really know my way around images anymore, so I'd love your help with this if you have time. I uploaded two pictures for Alexandria Harmonizers as copyrighted works because the person who sent them to me told me "They're ours, we own the copyright," but just now he clarified that he meant "one of our guys took them so we can use them." In other words, they are not copyrighted images at all. How would I go about changing the copyright status to public domain? Should I just re-upload? From what I can tell, this bust is located in a public space, so anyone can walk up, photograph it, and release it under a free license. The Speyer Legacy School

Thank you for the help in editing (your initial edits were very instructive). We are trying to clean up a dormant page with more accurate information about the school (the previous iteration contained a lot of information about other unaffiliated institutions and a lot of other irrelevant text). Your advisement on encyclopedic writing is taken to heart and we're referring to other school pages to help clean up the style of our added content. Do you have any other specific recommendations? Obviously, the copy was written by our marketing team for brochures, etc., , so I'm trying to re-work it as best I can to be more factual and less advertising, but if you have specific things you can point out, I'll do my best to clean that as well.

Re: The files, this is my first time working with file licensing on Wikipedia. I saw another school used the "Logo" file licensing, so I did that for our logo and did the same for our photographs. I haven't uploaded photographs to wikipedia in a *long* time (maybe 10 years?) so the new format was confusing for me. Would you recommend removing the files until I can get the school to agree to license them in a more commons-friendly way?

I see that you placed the disputed tag on the file, which means the reviewing administrator will look at it before deletion. In general, non-free photographs of things that are still in existence are not accepted, though with the information you added (that the news agency was the only one allowed to take pictures), I wouldn't have tagged the file in the first place, but rather taken it to WP:FFD. @Leezk: While it may be true, is no evidence to support your claim that you have permission to license File:James Joseph DeMartis.JPG with the license that you claimed. Please follow the protocol outlined at WP:DCP to provide this evidence confidentially to Wikipedia's volunteer response team. If this evidence is deemed sufficient, the file will be restored. As for the other files (the paintings) that were removed from the article, I was not involved with that. SBS Numbers

The recent removal of the SBS numbers is not necessary. Om the Main page for the fleet the numbers are posted so the same should be done on the SBS PAGE

@Olsen24: It's one thing to specify the general range of numbers for a fleet (i.e. to say that the Orion 7's are numbered X to Y). Some may even think that is too much, but personally I'm fine with it. But which buses are assigned to SBS service/wrapped has no source whatsoever, and buses are wrapped/unwrapped often. I appreciate you trying to make sure all the T's are crossed on photo copyrights, and you're correct that government works aren't ordinarily in the public domain, but the Georgia Supreme Court has granted express permission for images taken from their oral arguments to be used in publications as long as they aren't being sold for a profit or being used to alter the content of oral arguments (for example, you couldn't take an oral argument video and cut it to make one side look like it said something it didn't). Can you show me something more definitive that says I can't use this image? Though it may be fair use by US Copyright law, Wikipedia has a stricter standard for fair use. If I recall, this image is of a living person and existed to show that he has testified before the GA Supreme Court before. On the first part, because he is still alive, someone could take a free image of him. On the second part, it does not significantly increase readers' understanding of the article topic, and its omission would be detrimental to that understanding, in comparison to a sentence or two. Thus, it cannot be used as a non-free work under fair use on Wikipedia. Having permission to use something for non-commercial/educational-only purposes or prohibiting modification is no better, as anything on Wikipedia which does not meet the strict fair use just mentioned is released under the CC-BY-SA or similar license, which permits commercial use. Thus, there is no gray area - either commercial use/modification is allowed, the file falls under the strict fair use standard, or it is deleted. – Train2104 (t • c) 23:03, 26 September 2017 (UTC)

@VTnav: As Mike Morasky is still alive, we cannot accept a fair use image of him. (anyone can take a picture of him and release it under a free license, he is alive and not in prison, etc) So any image we use must be free, which means anyone can use it for any purpose, whether it be commercial or with modifications. OCRemix does not seem to have such a license, but it does seem to have user generated content. MTA bus fleet

What should we do to end the edit warring? Olsen24 seems determined to add their own images no matter what, and doesn't understand why they're not the best quality. Mtatrain is also getting on my nerves a bit - they're acting a bit owner-y and aggressive as well.

I also think that some parts of the page have far too much detail. Information about individual buses (crashes, repairs, minor repowering) is generally below the threshold of an encyclopedia, with occasional exceptions (buses preserved in historical fleets generally have reliable sources to support them, and are also significant for their long-term historical value). Would you be okay with me removing statements like "4619 is out of service due to damage from an accident" and "4899 was originally equipped with a Navistar MaxxForce 9 engine, but was re-powered with a Cummins ISL9 engine."? ANI Experiences survey

Beginning on November 28, 2017, the Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) will be conducting a survey to en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. Spam templates

I just got through clearing out the spam queue, and noticed that you had tagged a lot of "templates" that were actually spam pseudo-articles for deletion. I noticed that some of those had been around for quite a while, might I ask how you found them? It seems we might need to keep a closer eye for that going forward. @Seraphimblade: Going fowards, NPP of templatespace should be enough. I do it on a daily basis and find at least a couple things that don't belong there every day. As for how I found these, I ran a Quarry query to find single author template basepages created by users who (as of today) have less than 500 edits. Working down the list in order of increasing edit count, I'm finding lots and lots of crap (see the bottom of my CSD log) in the first several hundred entries. Some of it is spam, some of it is just misplaced articles that I've G2'ed, there was even a borderline attack page. – Train2104 (t • c) 02:03, 7 December 2017 (UTC)

Deck Roof Subway Car 3662

I noticed you went to the Shore Line Trolley Museum before, since you uploaded a picture of the R17 controls. I was wondering if you could possibly go back to the museum and take a picture of Deck Roof Hi-V Car 3662? The reason is because that is the only example of the Deck Roof Hi-V left, and it would be an excellent idea to have a picture of that car so readers know what the car looks like. Commons doesn't have a picture of that car yet, so you may be the first one to upload a picture of that car.

Thanks for finding all of those unregistered user pages...but my hands hurt from deleting all of them! Would you consider putting them on a user subpage so that they can be batch deleted later? They'd all have to be double checked still of course, but that way more people could potentially see them before they're deleted anyways. ansh666 18:53, 22 December 2017 (UTC)
