From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by Herbythyme (talk | contribs) at 11:16, 16 June 2008 (→‎ukmix.org/forums: done). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

    Instructions for editors

There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

    1. Proposed additions
    2. Proposed removals
    3. Troubleshooting and problems
    4. Discussion

Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

    Instructions for admins
Any admin unfamiliar with this page should probably read this first, thanks.
If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

Please consider using Special:BlockedExternalDomains instead, powered by the AbuseFilter extension. This is faster and more easily searchable, though only supports whole domains and not whitelisting.

    1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
    2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
    3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages.)
    4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regular expressions — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
    5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
    6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number – 219678247 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.

    Proposed additions

    allaahuakbar.net

Per m:talk:Spam blacklist, allaahuakbar.net needs to be blacklisted on meta but there are a number of links on several projects. I have just cleaned up enWP so am blacklisting here temporarily to stop them creeping back in, I will remove it when the meta blacklist entry goes in. Guy (Help!) 20:55, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some allaahuakbar.net links are valid and have been placed on pages by non-spammers for good reason. Please don't blanket-delete these, but delete on a case-by-case basis.-Moorlock (talk) 21:57, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
In what way valid? I don't see any evidence that this is a reliable source. Guy (Help!) 18:12, 16 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is the second time I've had to blacklist one of this guy's websites. I already had gamerosters.com blacklisted a year ago, so if you can look at logs/archives somehow please check that out. But anyway, here's the deal:
Brian Kaldenberg runs a website called GameRosters.com which sells custom rosters for video games like those in the NCAA Football series. He continuously spammed NCAA Football 08 with his gamerosters.com link, as you'll see if you can check the archives somehow. It might have been at a the meta spam list, though I don't really understand all this.
Anyway, Mr. Kaldenberg has shown a complete disregard for Wikipedia rules on spamming, and has even sent my threatening messages via email, AIM and facebook.
Now, a guy named Fairdale Kings used to run a website called fkrosters.com which provided rosters free of charge. It seems that Mr. Kaldenberg has bought out FK, as the fkrosters.com website is no nearly identical to www.gamerosters.com and has been re-designed by Mr. Kaldenberg's company, NimbleAd.com.
However, it seems Mr. Kaldenberg has been careful to not put his name on the FK website, so as not to let FK's users know up front that FK is no longer running the website. Of course, the big difference is that he is no charging from that website.
Anyway, on to the point. You can see that Mr. Kaldenberg has begun spamming the NCAA Football 09 article with his new fkrosters.com link. Here are some diffs:
I think it's quite clearly a violation of WP:SPAM in a ton of different ways, from being a conflict of interest, to being a personal website, to trying to advertise and profit from having a link on Wikipedia. Mr. Kaldenberg has shown a complete disregard for Wikipedia policy in recent years, and though I doubt this will be the end of his problems here, this definitely needs to be done and will at least throw a wrench into his violations.►Chris NelsonHolla! 21:50, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, from the Google search link above, I've found this which proves his acquisition of the fkrosters.com name.►Chris NelsonHolla! 21:56, 21 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    A new diff:
    And another:

    [4]

    Can we get this done?►Chris NelsonHolla! 21:39, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Has there been any more additions?--Hu12 (talk) 02:03, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
No, just these four thus far. But I guarantee you there will be more, and considering I've already proven he is trying to promote his website for profit, I think there's no question it should be blacklisted. Plus, his gamerosters.com site has already been blacklisted on Wikipedia and this just another version.►Chris NelsonHolla! 02:05, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    And it happens again today:

    [5]Chris NelsonHolla! 20:40, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thus far, edits from a single IP appear to account for all insertions of the link, so I've added some UW tags to the user's talk page. --- Barek (talkcontribs) - 21:11, 27 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I explained to him in detail about the policy last year, he knows it all. He does not care because he says he's running a business. The fact that his one link has already been blacklisted should be enough by itself to get this one banned also.►Chris NelsonHolla! 01:17, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    And it happens again:

    [6]

Seriously, I cannot understand what's taking so long with this. The mere fact that his gamerosters.com link was blacklisted and this new link serves only to circumvent that should make this automatic. Warnings won't help, you can look at the talk pages of the IP's that did it last year to see he was warned.►Chris NelsonHolla! 01:28, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See, here's an IP he did this with last year on NCAA Football 08. Here are the contributions of that IP. And here are the contributions of this new IP.►Chris NelsonHolla! 01:31, 28 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd like to add this forum to the blacklist for the same reason that worldwidealbums.tk and clickitaliansoftware.net was. There's no excuse for this to be used as a source for album sales and unfortunately many discographies seem to use it. If blacklisting is too much, perhaps this can be added to XLinkBot. Spellcast (talk) 18:50, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    • Comment - for the love of god please blacklist this forum. It's used in so many album and discography articles at this point, its overwhelming trying to stay on top of it. - eo (talk) 19:23, 22 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Very persistent spammer on Central Board of Secondary Education. Totally unresponsive to warnings, changes IPs frequently. Generally combines spam addition with removal of the entity's official web page. MrOllie (talk) 17:10, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

That page has been hit several hundred times by many different spammers, not just this one. Also this guy has spammed other domains. Give me some time and I'll sort it out. I suspect some other spammers will get their domains listed, too.
Thanks for your work on trying to keep that page clean.--A. B. (talkcontribs) 18:44, 9 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Proposed removals

I request that meshofficechairs.co.uk be removed from the list. I was trying to write the article about the Ergohuman. I included the UK and US suppliers. It let me include the US one but not the UK one. So I am slightly confused as to why it blocked it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Niceday2008 (talkcontribs) 09:24, 16 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Request to delist Debatepedia

debatepedia.org is a redirect to wiki.idebate.org. I came across this block while trying to add a link to Debatepedia on Wikipedia:Pro and con lists, but it might be useful to link to from article pages, as well. On controversial topics like gun control or abortion, there's some difficulty in preventing people from using the article or talk page as a discussion forum. Though Wikipedia is not the place to have arguments, it seems it would be useful to give people an alternative forum that is that place. Looking at the original complaint, it appears that the founders added a lot of links to empty debate pages. That's not useful, and it's against the external linking policy.

However, the site has started to fill out, and some debate pages on prominent issues have good content now. The ones linked from their "Past Daily Debate Digest topics daily digest" page (direct link forbidden by spam blacklist) seem to be generally suitable for linking. I think linking to these pages would be useful for readers who want to dig deeper into an issue, or who are passionate about it and need somewhere to argue about it.

So, I recommend removing these two domains from the blacklist. I hope the owners of Debatepedia have gotten the message that links to contentless pages are not OK so there won't be another flood of such lists. (Though user blocks are an alternative to deal with that.) I think it's more likely we can have a controlled increase in cross-linking, limited to "good" links, though the usual day-to-day editing process. Perhaps a special note on the external linking policy about this type of site would help that. -- Beland (talk) 02:15, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia e-mail abuse, canvassing, mass spamming and sock puppetry. Far to much abuse (Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam/2007_Archive_Nov_1#wiki.idebate.org). Additionaly wiki.idebate.org links:
I don't see any compeling reason for removal at this point, nor am I convinced how this could be used as as a citation or source. However, if a specific link is needed as a potential citation, any etablished editor can request it on the whitelist on a case-by-case basis, where the url can be demonstrated as an appropriate Reliable and Verifiable source (in an appropriate context) when there are no other reasonable alternatives available.--Hu12 (talk) 03:52, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
For the interests of your work on Wikipedia:Pro and con lists I have Whitelisted the root domain http://wiki.idebate.org/index.php/Welcome_to_Debatepedia%21 for use there. Note that variations other than the format above, will not work or be linkable.--Hu12 (talk) 04:11, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not suggesting that Debatepedia is useful as a citation or source to verify factual information; that is not its purpose. Its purpose is to showcase well-reasoned opinions. I don't see why the Wikipedia policies on verifiability and sourcing apply. Self-published opinions are not appropriate for Wikipedia, but they are of interest to readers of articles on these topics. For the articles I mentioned, there does seem to be a wide variety of opinions represented, not just one person, and those opinions are well researched and grounded in factual evidence, as per Debatepedia policy.
I'm curious on which criteria you feel these links would fail Wikipedia:External links. -- Beland (talk) 21:02, 7 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:External_links#Restrictions_on_linking, due to Wikipedia e-mail abuse, canvassing, mass spamming and sock puppetry. Whitelisting on a case-by-case basis is in the best interest of the project for now.  Not done--Hu12 (talk) 18:56, 10 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Blacklist logging

    Full Instructions for Admins

    Quick Reference

    For Spam reports or requests originating from this page, use template {{/request|0#section_name}}

    • {{/request|213416274#Section_name}}
    • Insert the oldid 213416274 a hash "#" and the Section_name (Underscoring_spaces_where_applicable):
    • Use within the entry log here.

    For Spam reports or requests originating from Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam use template {{WPSPAM|0#section_name}}

    • {{WPSPAM|182725895#Section_name}}
    • Insert the oldid 182725895 a hash "#" and the Section_name (Underscoring_spaces_where_applicable):
    • Use within the entry log here.

    Have added a supplement, a general " how-to of sorts. --Hu12 (talk) 10:31, 23 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note: if you do not log your entries it may be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found.

    Addition to the COIBot reports

The lower list in the COIBot reports now have after each link four numbers between brackets (e.g. "www.example.com (0, 0, 0, 0)"):

    1. first number, how many links did this user add (is the same after each link)
    2. second number, how many times did this link get added to wikipedia (for as far as the linkwatcher database goes back)
    3. third number, how many times did this user add this link
    4. fourth number, to how many different wikipedia did this user add this link.

If the third number or the fourth number are high with respect to the first or the second, then that means that the user has at least a preference for using that link. Be careful with other statistics from these numbers (e.g. good user do add a lot of links). If there are more statistics that would be useful, please notify me, and I will have a look if I can get the info out of the database and report it. The bots are running on a new database, Eagle 101 is working on transferring the old data into this database so it becomes more reliable.

For those with access to IRC, there this data is available in real time. --Dirk Beetstra T C 10:41, 26 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    poking COIBot

I notice that sometimes people who are not active on IRC need some link reports. Admins here can now add {{LinkSummary|domain}} to User:COIBot/Poke, when COIBot picks up the edit to that page (and it should), it will put the domains into its reporting queue (high priority, which is, only behind waiting XWiki reports) and create a report on the link(s). The first report should be saved within about 5 minutes, if it takes longer than 15 minutes there is probably something wrong, and it may be useful to add the template with the link again (it reads the added part of the diffs (the right column)), or poke me or another person who is active on IRC personally. Hope this is of help. --Dirk Beetstra T C (en: U, T) 12:46, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    P.S. Please don't overuse this function, everything still needs to be saved .. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:54, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It had some startup problems, but all seems to work fine now. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:27, 4 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    archive script

Eagle 101 said he had one running on meta, is it possible to get it up and going here?--Hu12 10:27, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would be good - Eagle hasn't been working on Meta for a while though & I've not seen anything (there was supposed to be a logging script too!) --Herby talk thyme 12:10, 15 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    • Great news, Ive written a script that can archive this page given the templates that we use, I can create a approved archive along with a rejected archive if people are interested. βcommand 06:51, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Interested" - bit of an understatement there :) Great news - please feel free to help/supply the script. I tend to leave stuff around a week in case anyone shouts or adds more (archives once done should be left alone). How would you handle the "discussion" type bits? Cheers --Herby talk thyme 09:40, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
First question, do you want approved and rejected request in separate archives? as for the discussions we could get Misza bot over here for things older than 30 days. βcommand 17:13, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would think one archive, seperate sections, like it is currently[16], not sure if the script can do that, but if so, doubt there would be objections in implementation...--Hu12 (talk) 00:24, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
There is no simple way of editing sections using the bot. (section editting is evil). it would just be one large archive. βcommand 00:59, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    MySpace

Is all of MySpace blacklisted? I just had a speedy deletion where a link could not be posted to the original copyrighted source because of a blacklist. Rmhermen (talk) 19:17, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

blog.myspace was blacklisted Per request by Jimbo. what page? --Hu12 (talk) 20:18, 24 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I was able to follow the link posted on the page to get to the myspace page; however, a link to it couldn't be added to the speedy deletion template. This seems to be the opposite of the behavior I would expect from the blacklist idea. Rmhermen (talk) 01:14, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Blacklisting applies everywhere (including templates), its a blacklist. Next time remove the "http://" or use <nowiki> Tag.--Hu12 (talk) 01:23, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Well, that isn't how it worked - the link in the article worked fine. It was only when added to the deletion template that it didn't show up at all - just the this link is blacklisted text. Well I haven't been to recreate the problem. Rmhermen (talk) 13:04, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see what you mean now. The filter will not trip if the link was placed prior to the blacklisting. However if it is removed, re-added or another blacklisted link is added, the filter is triggered. --Hu12 (talk) 13:18, 26 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I concur in blacklisting for now. Given all the controversy around this site, any permanent blacklisting should be based on wide community consensus. In that spirit, as soon as this site is back on line and safe, it should be removed from the blacklist. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 17:01, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I am creating a COIBot report.(done, but too many records; 445 records; strangely, this link seems only to be added to en in the last 6 months or so). If it is unsafe, maybe it should be on the meta-blacklist? --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:05, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Comment: Why there are probably few old links to WR -- as I recall we had a witch hunt last year for WR links. Someone was going around throwing warnings at long-time editors for having link to an "attack site" on their user or user talk pages. Folks were threatened with blocks if they didn't toe the line. Eventually this movement crashed of its own accord-- kind of like McCarthyism. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 20:16, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Dirk, you're right. I don't have time to handle this now, but it should be removed here and added temporarily to the meta blacklist. Other Wikimedia projects use its links as well. Normally any site with malicious code gets added at meta, even if it's only on one project. --A. B. (talkcontribs) 17:13, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    Will do that. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:16, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh .. I just added it to the meta blacklist. OK to remove then? --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:24, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I see that it was removed here as well as repaired, have removed it again to minimize disruption. --Dirk Beetstra T C 17:30, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

    Rihannanow.com

Can we blacklist the fan-made blog site www.rihannanow.com? There appears to be at least one, if not more, editor(s) attempting to pass it off on pretty much every article related to Rihanna as her "official website," which it is not. --InDeBiz1 (talk) 22:28, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

mediatraffic.de / fake, unreliable chart site - In the communities very own words

Per this community ruling - Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/United World Chart. The article, chart and website are deemed unreliable. Unfortunately, IPS, newbies and fan boys keep re adding the "source" despite community consensus. The site is still used in over 1000 wikipedia article, its going to be a nightmare training people not to use it so it should be blocked. — Realist2 (Come Speak To Me) 02:47, 14 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
