The Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM Ahmedabad, also known as IIMA) is considered to be one of the premier institutes of management education in India. According to the Economist's survey of global business schools in 2009, IIMA is considered to be the "toughest in the world to get into" as over 600 people compete for every seat.[1] IIMA was ranked as the top business school in India according to the Business Today B-School Rankings in 2007-08 [2] and the Economic Times B-school Survey 2007.[3] In 2009 again, Centre for Forecasting & Research ranked IIMA as India's top business school. [4] IIMA is EQUIS accredited.

History

The jaali in Siddi Sayyed mosque which inspired the IIMA logo

Dr Vikram Sarabhai and a few other public-spirited industrialists realized that agriculture, education, health, transportation, population control, energy and public administration were all vital elements in a growing society and that it was necessary to link these meaningfully with industry. The result was the creation of IIMA in 1961 as an autonomous body with the active collaboration of the Government of India, the Government of Gujarat as well as industry.

IIMA was conceived not purely as a business school, but as a school of management. Its mission is to professionalize Indian management through teaching, research, training, institution building and consulting. It also aims to professionalize some of the vital sectors of India's economy.

In its formative years, IIMA collaborated with Harvard Business School. Largely as a consequence of this collaboration, IIMA pioneered the case method of research and teaching in India. It tasted success within a very few years due to the cultivation of industry for student placement. This attracted increasing numbers of applicants, a trend which accelerated after the liberalisation of the economy in the early 1990s and its subsequent globalisation. This has contributed significantly to IIMA's distinctive identity as a premier teaching institution in India.

Campus

Architecture

Louis Kahn Plaza

The old campus was designed by Louis Kahn, who was an exponent of exposed-brick architecture. The most distinctive features of the plan are the numerous arches and square brick structures with circles carved out in the facade.

The student dormitories are connected to the main complex by a series of arched corridors and landscaped courts. An extension to the old campus built across the 132 feet (40 m) ring road was commissioned in 2003 with student dorms and classrooms built in a contemporary concrete design which strives to retain some elements of the old campus' architecture such as the arches and exposed brick facades. The two campuses are connected with an underpass (tunnel-walkway).While the new campus does offer some contrast to the old campus, the design seems to retain some elements such as the aches/circles and some exposed brick facades.

The library is named after Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, the world renowned physicist and the founder director. The main objective of the library is to provide information support for teaching, research, consulting and learning. The total area of the library is 20,120 sq ft (1,869 m2) and the total seating capacity is 210 including 50 open carrels. The collection consists of approximately 1,65,800 books, 38,750 bound volumes of periodicals, 1,975 Working papers, 225 dissertations of FPM students, 126 Educational Video Cassettes, 1340 CDs (of books, databases, training etc), and subscription to 510 print journals [5]

Ravi J Matthai Centre for Educational Innovation Auditorium

Named after the prominent educator and the founding director, Ravi J. Matthai, it is the biggest auditorium in the campus with a capacity of 500. Most of the talks and presentations by reputed business leaders and other national figures are held here. It also hosts several events during Confluence and Chaos.

Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship

The Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) was set up in 2001 with the aim of fostering innovation and entrepreneurship by bringing together innovators, venture capitalists and technologists.

Classrooms

Classroom in the old campus

There are eleven classrooms and ten seminar rooms distributed between the old and new campuses. This is in addition to the seminar and conference rooms in the faculty wings. First year classes are held in the classrooms in the new campus. The spacious classrooms are designed to facilitate effective group discussions and communication and come equipped with multimedia facilities, networked computers, air conditioning and excellent acoustics. The fixed seating arrangement and swivel chairs permit the students to interact effectively with every person in the room.

Programmes

Post Graduate Programme in Management

The Post-Graduate Programme (equivalent to an MBA) is a two year flagship program of IIMA. The programme nurtures world-class managers by exposing them to real life unstructured situations along with analytical tools and business philosophies. Participants discover their true potential after rigorous and focused hard work. Students gain conceptual insights into managerial decision-making while at the same time fine tuning their interpersonal skills.

The Institute has initiated exchange programmes with more than twenty-five foreign Institutions of equal repute. Every year the Institute selects close to a quarter of the students to spend one term at some of these institutes. The students get to benefit from the rich exposure that they receive. Similarly students from the corresponding institutes visit IIMA for a term. Joint activities provide each school with a better understanding of teaching methods they practice and give them a better poise. Students learn to appreciate diverse cultures and working environments and develop a holistic vision.

Another important aspect of the PGP is the summer internship. This eight-week programme provides the students an opportunity to work with reputed companies from various sectors where they get to put their ideas and skills to work.

Some of the best companies, in India and the world, visit the campus every year in search of the best talent in the field. Close to 6000 graduates of the PGP course have reached high positions in a number of reputed corporations and institutes.

Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives

The one year Post Graduate Programme in Management for Executives (PGPX) is a one year program equivalent to an Executive MBA. It has been conceived to sharpen the skills of bright and aspiring executives, with work experience, to help them evolve as management leaders and change agents in the global arena. With a general management orientation and an emphasis on international exposure and global business skills, the one year full time residential programme is ideal for mid-level managers. Though only 3 years old, PGPX has received an excellent response form the industry; campus placement for the PGPX commands the highest average salary among Indian MBAs.

PGPX is a get-ready-for-top-management programme in which only the sharpest minds make it to the consideration set. The students are selected through a rigorous evaluation process based on leadership profiling, GMAT scores and an interview. The average GMAT score for PGPX III (2008-2009) was 728, while for PGPX IV (2009-2010) batch the average GMAT score is 722, comparable to that of world's top ranking MBAs. For the 2009-10 academic year, the PGPX batch size is 80 with average work ex over 10 years and international work ex over 5 years.

Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management

The Post Graduate Programme in Agri-Business Management (PGP-ABM) is equivalent to an MBA. It is a unique programme specially designed to enhance the quality of management in the food and agribusiness sector; its purpose is to help this sector meet the challenges of the evolving market place. Agriculture accounts for about 25 per cent of India's gross domestic product (GDP) and for over 60 per cent of employment. The growth of this sector, therefore, is crucial to the development of Indian economy.

Fellow Programme in Management

The Fellow Programme in Management is the PhD program of IIMA. The objective of the programme is to provide students with the necessary skills to identify and research complex issues in the field of management.

The programme offers research training in ten areas of specialization. The student becomes part of one of these sentinel groups and acquires the fundamental theoretical knowledge as well as the practical aspects of the area. The programme is strongly committed to preparing faculty who shape the managers of the future.

Faculty Development Programme

The Faculty Development Programme is specially designed for teachers, researchers and industrial organizations for their management education requirements. Since the first course, that was offered in 1979, the programme has been continuously modified and restructured to address new developmental needs of management educators. Every year, hundreds of sponsored participants enhance their skills and update their pedagogical tools. They practice and share their new learning with thousands of students, slowly bringing about a major qualitative change in academics and practice.

Management Development Programme

For every academic year, more than 40 MDPs are planned. This list includes the flagship MDPs like the 3-TP (3-Tier Programme) and the MDP for small and medium enterprises. These MDPs are known as General Management Programmes (GMPs) which are designed with the objective of providing insights into managerial concepts and techniques relevant for formulating and implementing strategies in functional areas. Besides GMPs, the Institute’s MDPs are offered as open enrollment programmes and are designed to address specialized needs in areas such as business policy, communications, economics, finance, marketing, organizational behaviour, personnel and industrial relations and so on. In response to the growing challenges of a globalized world, the institute collaborates with world renowned business schools like Duke University’s Fuqua School of Business, ESSEC Business School, and Alliant University to offer uniquely phased joint MDPs in India and abroad. Over the years, more than 42,500 managers have benefited from the 1,200 MDPs conducted by IIMA.

Faculty

Harvard Steps that lead to the main block and faculty offices

The reputation of IIMA owes much to the exceptional calibre of its faculty. The Institute prides itself on creating an environment of substantial academic freedom overlaid by rigorous, self-imposed standards of excellence and socially responsive practices.

The faculty willingly submit themselves to a unique, rigorous, open, and continuous process of appraisal and feedback from the students. This enables the faculty to fine tune course contents and delivery mechanisms. Through a variety of committees, the faculty play a hands-on role in the governance of the Institute and assume total ownership of collective decisions.

Focus areas in faculty research include social marketing, productivity, women’s issues, human resource development, optimization models, organizational learning, institution building, management and leadership excellence, and public sector management. While some research is internally driven, several projects are commissioned and funded by national and international organizations such as the Ford Foundation, United Nations Organization, World Bank, NCERT, Planning Commission of India, Central and State ministries, and industrial agencies.

Placements

Recruitment occurs in three stages – summer recruitment, lateral placements and final recruitment. National and international companies in fields as diverse as investment banking, consulting, marketing, information technology, retail banking and private equity come down to the campus for recruitment. Summer internship occurs during the second term of first year and is an important and an integral part of the academic curriculum at IIMA. The first year of IIMA consists of three terms that stress on academic rigor and development of managerial skills. The summer internship tests the students on this learning and lasts for 8–10 weeks. It helps the students gain firsthand experience in a particular industry and provides them with opportunities to innovate, while adding to the ideas and techniques that were learnt in the first year. It helps them become more receptive to market needs, and in deciding their area of specialization in the second year. Lateral recruitment occurs in the sixth term of the second year and is only open to people with a stipulated amount of work experience. Final recruitment occurs at the end of the second year and is open to all students. According to the Economist's MBA rankings, IIMA ranks number one in "jobs found through the career service."[6]

Alumni

One of the most powerful assets that IIMA has built over the years is its alumni network. The alumni family is an important component for realising the goals of the Institute – the creation, application and dissemination of management knowledge. In fact, they are the crucial change agents, who transform leadership. The Institute’s activities and programmes for its alumni are directed towards building lifelong bonds of kinship with the Institute.

A vast number of IIMA Alumni have distinguished themselves in almost every aspect of management across the world. A recent survey calculated that as many as 62% of IIM-educated CEOs in India are from IIMA[7] The IIMA Alumni Association was formally established in 1967.

Dorm Culture

Students in IIMA reside in 25 dorms which are distributed between the old and new campuses. The number of rooms in a dorm varies from 20 to 40 which house the first year students, second year students and FPMs (PhD students). Students are allocated to dorms on a random basis and care is taken to ensure that people from diverse backgrounds – engineers, commerce graduates, arts majors, architects, chartered accountants – are present to provide a rich learning experience to the students. The dorm is the epicenter of all activity in IIMA. It forms a distinct, independent unit. Every dorm has its own culture, established by the alumni. The dorms have their own identity, their own idiosyncrasies, and that makes it a fun place to be in. Dorm birthday celebrations at IIMA make for cherished memories for years to come.

Student Activities

The clubs and the special interest groups on campus cover diverse interests from finance and marketing to literature, theatre and nature, going beyond the confines of the classroom and the curriculum. These clubs organize various events and workshops throughout the year, to ensure that the extra-curricular scene is dynamic. Apart from providing an avenue for students to showcase their talents, these clubs also encourage students to take the initiative in organizing events and set standards of excellence in various areas. IIMA has a number of clubs like Beta – the finance club, Consult Club, Niche – the marketing club, the Entre Club for entrepreneurship, Forum for Industry Interaction - which helps students get projects in industry, the Faculty Student Interaction Cell which brings together faculty and students, Genesys - the information technology club, the Literary Symposium Desk - the quiz and debating club, IIMACTS – the theatre society, and Stargazers – the astronomy club.
