Oliver Kamm

I appreciate your comments on Oliver Kamm's talk page. Although I have other pressing tasks to attend at the moment, I'll eventually return to the discussion. Also, don't let TJive intimidate you. He's nothing but a bully. Sir Paul 06:24, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

It's ironic, though. I have long regarded Kamm as a pretentious fool who isn't worth a minute of anybody's time trying to read him -- which is why I've been reluctant to get drawn in. Yet I'm still wasting time on him...--NSH001 15:07, 7 July 2006 (UTC)

Jesus' Pacifism getting attacked again by deniers

hi NSH001, just to let you know that Pacifism is getting attacked again by someone who wants equal weight to the notion that the historical Jesus was actually not a pacifist (you know, the typical Jesus "violently" driving out the moneychangers with his Rambo whip). if you want to help regarding that, your help would be appreciated. r b-j 20:28, 22 October 2006 (UTC)

Just to let you know what the TRUTH of it is- if you haven't already visited the page. All that utter CRAP about "the warrior of his POV" is utter tripe. Absolute, utter nonsense. The incident with the money changers is a single, solitary piece of a complete paragraph. One can read the entirety of my edit, which ONLY stands as a secondary balancing of the initial portrayal of Jesus as a pacifist individual. The rest of the edit concerns Jesus direct connections to Jehovah in the Old Testament- as you most likely know, Jehovah and Jesus are both considered the same individual by most Christian denominations, and Jesus himself spoke of how "I and my father are one". I have been attempting to discuss this with Rbj, but he insists on spewing absolute crap like my "edits have no integrity". He's been altering my talk page comments on top of his insults, AND shoving things like "Jesus practiced what he preached"! right into the article, as well as making threats regarding the 3RR to me. I've given up trying to civilly discuss this with someone who absolutely refuses to be civil about the matter. He can sit on the farking article all he wants with his POV in fact, because I really am tired of trying to talk about things with him. I figure you deserve the truth about the matter, however. Cheers. Ex-Nintendo Employee 07:30, 23 October 2006 (UTC)

Basque Portal?

Kaixo, I'm contacting you because you figure in Category:User eu, meaning that you speak some Basque. You must therefore be Basque yourself or have an intense connection with the Basque Country.

I am thinking that maybe was a good idea to create a Portal (or maybe a Wikiproject? or both?) on the Basque theme but I feel such kind of project requires more than just one person.

If you are interested, please comment in my talk page.

Enjoy, --Sugaar 10:33, 4 November 2006 (UTC)

Thanks Neil

Hello Neil, thank you for your words of support on Sugaar's talk page. I have to admit I can't place you, I'm afraid - perhaps I never learnt your name in the the London Basque Society, or just forgot it (I'm pretty terrible at names in real life). I'm trying to recreate those days in my mind to conjure up your image - wish my memories won't so hazy! Well, whatever. I do appreciate your gesture - whether or not Sugaar is "convinced". Cheers, Alan --A R King 07:02, 1 December 2006 (UTC)

MEMRI talk page

Hi from the MEMRI talk page. It is nice to see a Quaker making his way over there as it can get contentious (I grew up in the Quaker school and camp system--altho not a Quaker--and miss a good silent meeting) Please see my response [1] to your recent comment [2]. WK

Good evening, Neil Someone has written a line about someone called Wullie Galleon (famous resident?) on the WK article. It looks like nonsense to me and I suggest we delete it. What say you? Kind regards from Avril.rennie 23:18, 15 March 2007 (UTC)

Well, now I know that the "Merrick" is really the Inverclyde! Apart from that useful little piece of news, I can't see any reason to keep it. Too many non-notables tend to find their way into such sections of geographical articles, and should be deleted. I suspect the same applies to a few others on that list. Kind regards,
--NSH001 23:42, 15 March 2007 (UTC)
Yes, the Inverclyde has been refurbished and is now called the Merrick. Thank you for deleting the eponymous Mr Galleon (the Galleon Inn is now derelict, just up the road).
Regarding possibly deleting others, I'd like to get more information about Helen Keller's stay in WK; just how illustrious was Mr Gosman's rugby career?; Jean McCulloch was a name to conjure with when I was a child, but I don't know what golfing titles she won. It should be easy to find out, surely.
Hope you had a good weekend! With kind regards Avril.rennie 01:48, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

Welcome to Wikipedia, and thank you for your contributions. As a member of the Wikipedia community, I would like to remind you to adhere to Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy for editors, which it appears you have not followed at Shimon Tzabar. Thank you.

please avoid the implementation of weasel terms as you did here "His disgust". note: there's not much POV in shortening "West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip, and the Syrian Golan Heights" to "territories" - however, the term "occupation" is a politically charged one in contrast with "siezure". If you have proper reasoning for this, please state so on the talk page rather than attempt mass revertion. Jaakobou 12:07, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

With regards to your comments on User talk:RolandR: Please see Wikipedia's no personal attacks policy. Comment on content, not on contributors. Personal attacks damage the community and deter users. Note that continued personal attacks will lead to blocks for disruption. Please stay cool and keep this in mind while editing. Thank you.

for starters, you should assume good faith rather than portray a valid warning over unrefrenced weasel terms (i.e. "disgusted") as "attempted bullying", secondly, you can just remove this semi-help request semi-personal attack[3] and i'll remove this 'uw-npa2' warning and we can forget it ever happened. Jaakobou 20:23, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Please do not delete or edit legitimate talk page comments, as you did at User talk:NSH001; this is considered vandalism. If you would like to experiment, please use the sandbox. Thank you.

It is very much frowned upon to remove legitimate warnings by yourself from your userpage without addressing them beforehand. Jaakobou 20:23, 9 April 2007 (UTC)

Thank you for leaving a WP:3RR warning on my page, however I have not crossed the 3RR rule (i've also replied on my page).

This is your last warning. The next time you vandalize Wikipedia, as you did to User talk:NSH001, you will be blocked from editing.

As i've allready told you, you may not remove/refactor legitimate warnings by yourself from your talkpage without addressing them properly. As this is probably the 4th or 5th time you totally disregard policy (1st delete, and 2nd delete after 'uw-tpv2' notice), I'm no longer assuming good faith and giving you a final notice. Jaakobou 08:17, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Neil, I wouldn't be too worried at User:Jaakobou's bluster. He constantly threatens and attempts to bully other editors who do not agree with his own POV. He regularly issues totally baseless "final warnings", which he never follows up. As for the suggestion that you are vandalising your own talk page, I suggest you treat this as a bit of comic relief; we all need to laugh occasionally.
I don't think he has yet broken 3RR on the article, though he has come close to doing so. I'm watching, and will certainly report im if he does.
Meanwhile, we should do all we can to ensure that the article is balanced and facual, and does not misrepresent Shimon's own trenchantly expressed opinions. RolandR 08:59, 10 April 2007 (UTC)
User:RolandR, if you feel I "constantly threaten" and "bully" you, you can report it rather than make the allegation (i.e. personal attack) here. Jaakobou 13:37, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Thought for the Day

One of my favourite movie exchanges, from the sublime Casablanca:

Ugarte (Peter Lorre)"You despise me don't you?" Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart) "Well, if I gave you any thought I probably would."

RolandR 23:25, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

RolandR, thanks for that, very funny! This time I've decided to leave Jaakobou's bizarre warnings on my talk page. Casual browsers of this page should note that these warnings were in response to one single (and very reasonable) edit, and will be able to make up their own minds. However, tempting though it is to laugh at Jaakobou, I do hope he can change his behaviour and become a useful contributor to Wikipedia.
--NSH001 10:11, 16 April 2007 (UTC)

sorry, i didn't understand the user talkpage policy...

apparently it's ok to remove warnings from the pages of other users to help them avoid the WP:3RR, sorry, i didn't understand the user talkpage policy... Jaakobou 06:13, 11 April 2007 (UTC)

Hi

Hi got your message, apologies, thought it would be good idea to move page to North Ayrshire as alot of the Ayrshire towns have the North Ayrshire title added. I haven't been here long and I am still trying to get used to the way Wikipedia works. And again I REALLY apologise on making the error. EwanMclean2005 21:46, 11 August 2007 (UTC)

Don't worry about it, we all make mistakes. You'll find that those articles that do have ", North Ayrshire" in their name are so named in order to distinguish them from other articles of a similar name. Otherwise there's no need.

Late reply

NSH001 Back on-line. Yes, I know many other Christian groups patrol the area and document, for later historians, the travesties of justice which are the hallmark of the apartheid regime now governing the Palestinian territories. It also helps that their presence mitigates what the thugs of fundamentalism can get away with, since much of what they do is now recorded on video.Wiki is different, since 'Israel's case' is defended by a congeries of individuals, many of whom are organizationally linked, ranking from stubborn twits, in here not because they can contribute anything, but because they are sufficiently obtuse but highly motivated to cause trouble and wear people down, to highly intelligent operators, in a war of attrition to exhaust the patience of editors trying, mostly. independently, to get the suppressed record registered. Nothing distinctive in that. I have a fair amount of professional experience elsewhere with countries that run monitoring agencies, to twig to each tremor in the national image, and arrange appropriate replies, to recognize how this version of the politics of knowledge functions.

I've thought about this at length and decided I will edit on occasion, without wasting much time reasoning with nitwits, whom the rulebook asks that we treat with 'good faith' when bad faith is the hallmark of all their editing. It was quite an experience, one I happily got involved in, since it gave ample room for one to tease out the structures of abnormal and ideologically-fixated minds. To withdraw wholly would be to subtract my own minor set of fingers from those of many in here who valiantly stand at the dyke wall to stop the field of historical truth being overrun by crap. To withdraw wholly would be disloyal to the stalwarts. I've often been told to pull my finger out, and generally arch my back when told to do so, if I may be permitted a vulgar aside. Being Scottish, are you familiar with the poetry of Robert Garioch, by the way? Best regards Nishidani (talk) 15:30, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

Good to see you back with us, Nishidani. Actually, I am NOT Scottish, though I did grow up there. I consider myself 100% English, born (like Paul Dirac) in Bristol of a Cornish mother; my father was from Bristol (coincidentally, he went to the same school and university as Dirac, but unlike Dirac, had to leave school at 16 for some menial clerking job and a few years later had to fight a World War first in order to get to university). Scotland is a staggeringly beautiful part of the world, but I don't want to go back and live there. I left there at the earliest opportunity, at age 17 after gaining 7 Highers (including a 100% score in maths). I wasn't popular at school there -- they didn't like a weedy middle-class nerd like me, who spoke with an English accent and was always near the top of the class. I do like editing some Scottish articles on Wikipedia as a way of keeping in touch with what is going on there, and reminding me of my youth (it wasn't all bad!).
Anyway, no, sorry I've never heard of Robert Garioch. I think I'm really a maths and science geek - the two subjects I hated most at school were English (especially English literature) and history - but I do like learning and using foreign languages. Strangely, the one author I do like from my school days is Robert Burns - he was given equal status to Shakespeare, and I can still recite him in a genuine Ayrshire accent.
Your new approach to editing sounds very sensible, but I do think WP:AGF is very useful. Firstly on practical grounds, it makes you seem more reasonable, prevents you saying things you may regret later, and overall I think makes you more persuasive. Morally, too, it makes sense, as it demonstrates respect for your interlocutor and helps force him/her to re-think his/her position.
--NSH001 (talk) 18:47, 26 January 2008 (UTC)

'I do think WP:AGF is very useful.'

Here I beg to differ. In several countries I have lived in, to assume good faith is to misread, often with disastrous consequences, what is actually going on. The lesson? Behave in good faith, decently, however much bad faith you encounter. Don't expect it from others: don't be provoked needlessly by it. As to 'seeming reasonable', it's a fine art, exquisitely honed, and flourished all over the media, and in our respectable world. I have a Platonic bias on this, and prefer to strive for reasonableness, rather than 'save the appearances' (sozein ta phainomena) or is that, more properly, keep up appearances. I can't help but read some of the most sweetly (seemingly) reasonable voices in here, (not only), as wholly in bad faith - the Iago syndrome. Never maker a fuss about it though. What one notes in the world is often best left in the privacy of one's personal perceptions. Regards Nishidani (talk) 10:31, 27 January 2008 (UTC)

WARNING

As per NPOV policy, blatant bias is not allowed on wikipedia. Until the section can be rewritten in an unbiased manner, blatant racist propaganda as it is cannot be allowed to remain. I am disgusted with the article in general in that it completely tries to hide the culpability of Arab states who stole the Palestinian land and then pushed the Palestinians into "refugee camps", but that particular section was so biased and horrid as to need removing immediately. The rest of the article needs a 100% reworking as well. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 1948remembered (talkcontribs) 23:28, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I am also quite disturbed in checking the authors who have "contributed" (and yes I use quotes as what many have given is nothing short of genocidal propaganda the level of Herr Goebbels) to the article. In particular the number of terrorist group supporters like Hezbollah who are pushing blatant propaganda solely tilted against the very people they hope to murder. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 1948remembered (talkcontribs) 23:31, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

WP:AIV

Please avoid using WP:AIV to report edit conflicts, as you did here. Also, be mindful of violating WP:3RR; please try to work this matter out with the other editors before making any further edits. Thank you, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 23:33, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

I'm aware of 1948remember's actions; however, the problem here is that there is too much point of view being applied by both sides. While I am not involved in the debate, I'd advise that you guys try to work it out on the talk page of articles. I've talked to the user; if he continues to edit war over the article, report him to WP:AN3. However, please try to resolve it with him first. Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 00:00, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
MoP, this was obvious vandalism, not a content dispute. First 1948R blanks a large section of the article, and is immediately (and correctly) reverted by ClueBot. He then repeats this action an additional four times, without answering or engaging with Tiamut's sensible reply to him on the article talk page, other than (later) posting a personal attack on her. He then proceeds to insert unsourced and irrelevant material into the lead without heeding Tiamut's polite edit-summary request to discuss his problems on the article's talk page, and edit-wars (blatantly violating 3RR) to keep reinserting his material. In the meantime, he posts spurious reports to WP:AIV (surprisingly quickly for a "new" user - is he a sockpuppet?). (Note that I delayed reporting him to AIV until he had received several warnings for his vandalism.)
You're right, of course, that it is preferable to discuss matters on the talk page, but 1948R showed no sign of doing so in a sensible manner, preferring to quickly revert when others restored the consensus version. If I get some time, I will try and discuss with him/her in a thoughtful and considered manner tomorrow, but it's already too late now, and I need to go to bed. Regards,
--NSH001 (talk) 01:54, 7 February 2008 (UTC)

I did read your comments but I'm not sure I agree with them. If the organization is actually referred to as "(AIMS)" with brackets around the acronym at all times, that would be a good reason to keep it - according to their website it isn't: "AIMS is a member based organization of more than 250 of the world’s leading distance races, from over 80 countries." If this is the case, shouldn't "(AIMS)" have redirected to the AIMS disambiguation page rather than Association of International Marathons and Distance Races? It seems to only have done so because you moved it from what you yourself referred to as an undesirable title. I know "redirects are cheap", but this is a housekeeping issue which in the unlikely case that someone does type an acronym with brackets, they will see the proper disambiguation page as the first search result rather than being redirected to the article about one particular organization. --Canley (talk) 23:03, 12 February 2008 (UTC)

Nishidani (talk) 19:06, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, again. So your dad was in Burma, not with Orde Wingate, I suppose (Palestine connections). I've read quite a bit about that war and indeed once did a lengthy study of Japanese war literature on it. Probably then your father knew Louis Allen, who, aside from fighting there, wrote a brilliant account of the Battle of Sittung?(I usually think in terms of the 6-links-to-any-person-in-the-world theorum) I met him him Durham in 1988. As to war, I chose to work in Israel because the air was thick with news that war would break out, and having been expelled from a public school for refusing cadet service over the Vietnamese war, and then subsequently charged (with a five year sentence) for refusing to put my name down in the conscription lottery, I wished to test my pacifism (not of an absolute variety). When asked where I would like to work I told the Jerusalem office 'any kittbutz near the most dangerous zone!' Nothing happened of course, other than getting a chance to sneak past military barriers to walk through the city of Gaza, where I was warned I would probably be shot, and instead spent a nice afternoon in Palestinian sweet and coffee shops, speaking French in deference to possible dislike of English or American-accented foreigners. Best regards then.(ps. even my own sister, (a wonderful cook) sought me out to ask me how to cook Cornish pasties. I was the only one to memorize our mother's recipe)Nishidani (talk) 22:44, 29 February 2008 (UTC)

I share your hope, and though the outlook seems quite dark some days, I'm almost optimistic that in the age of communication in which we live, it won't have to come to that before people wake up. Unfortunately, seeing what I happened in Iraq (how millions protested around the world against the war before it even started, but to no avail) if it definnitely possible that things will continue to get worse better they get better. We all do what little we can. It's good to know you buy that soap (so do I, in the local souq in Nazareth - when I can find it, and if not there are still some places in Acre that sell it too). Keep up your own great work. Tiamuttalk 17:44, 30 March 2008 (UTC)

New Project

Myself and several other editors have been compiling a list of very active editors who would likely be available to help new editors in the event they have questions or concerns. As the list grew and the table became more detailed, it was determined that the best way to complete the table was to ask each potential candidate to fill in their own information, if they so desire. This list is sorted geographically in order to provide a better estimate as to whether the listed editor is likely to be active.

If you consider yourself a very active Wikipedian who is willing to help newcomers, please either complete your information in the table or add your entry. If you do not want to be on the list, either remove your name or just disregard this message and your entry will be removed within 48 hours. The table can be found at User:Useight/Highly Active, as it has yet to have been moved into the Wikipedia namespace. Thank you for your help. Useight (talk) 06:50, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

NSH001/Archive 1, just a note of appreciation for your recent support of my request for adminship, which ended successfully with 112 supports, 2 opposes, and 1 neutral. If there's something I've realized during my RFA process this last week, it's that adminship is primarily about trust. I will strive to honour that trust in my future interactions with the community. sources

after reviewing the israeli source i agree it is unreliable. i was just shocked at another user making big statements without discussing it in the talk panel (calling a source unreliable is a major thing).

after researching i found this source, it touches on the affirmative action plan and supports the statements made in the article. how might i reference this and replace this source with the unreliable one? when i go to edit references, it says something like "*ref=/2" http://www.mfa.gov.il/MFA/MFAArchive/2000_2009/2000/2/Israel%20Government%20Action%20in%20the%20Arab%20Sector%20-%20Febr what do i do?Wikifan12345 (talk) 00:57, 12 June 2008 (UTC)

Haim Farhi

Thanks for your continued assistance on this page, Neil. It's looking pretty good now, though I can see where further work would be required (I need a better library to top off obscure points). Still, though not a FA candidate, it should have GA status (if it hasn't gained it yet. I note it failed the test back in January). One thing. Is there a template that enables one to reorganize the books cited in the refs., according to the standard wiki format? Regards Nishidani (talk) 16:39, 15 June 2008 (UTC)

Certainly it's a lot better than it was, but I think it still has a long way to go before it merits GA status. I have more or less reached the end of the improvements I can make without further discussion, and have been thinking of drafting a (quite lengthy) list of items to put on the talk page. Probably the most important of these has to do with the "flow" of the article, which I think is currently very poor. There are also some long and clumsy sentences which need to be improved. Among many other smaller points which have been bothering me, "al-Jazzar" is a better transcription of the Arabic than "al-Jazar", and I think should be changed, unless "al-Jazar" is the predominant transcription in all the relevant sources. The other main fault, instantly disqualifying it from GA status, is that large chunks of the article still require citation - although, again, it's a helluvalot better than it used to be, thanks to you.
Regarding templates, what you have done so far is perfectly OK, and doesn't need to be changed for GA status. But FWIW, my preference is to have, near the end of the article, a "Notes" section consisting ONLY of either <references/> or {{reflist}} or {{reflist|2}} (depending how many refs there are), followed immediately by a "References" section, containing a bulleted list of books, in alphabetical order by author (and by date within author if more than one book by the same author). The advantage of this scheme is that, in the text, you need only write <ref>Smith, p. 123</ref> or <ref>Smith (1985) p. 123</ref>, making the text a lot easier to follow when editing it. It then makes sense to use templates in the bulleted list. Again, there is more than one way of doing it, but you can find my personal preference at User:NSH001/citation.
You may need to be patient for my list of improvements (too many other things to see to!).

Take all the time you need. There's no rush at all. I agree on all of what you say. I'm in no hurry on this, either. I've always looked at "nowiki ... /nowiki" and mused over what it ought to mean, but lacked the technical curiosity to frig round with it and twig its function, so your explanatory note clears things. Help, I need somebody

I'm sorry to bother you again. It's becoming a bad habit. Any attempt to make a new section on my talk page doesn't work. What happens is that the new section is just jumbled in under the previous section. I've tried to fix it, without results. Perhaps the whole page needs archiving, something I don't know how to do. If you could glance over there and illuminate me as to what I've done wrong, or give me some suggestions I'd very much appreciate it. Thanks Nishidani (talk) 08:11, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

looks like a glitch in the wiki software to me NSH001 (talk) 08:46, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
I copied your remarks about nowiki and did not realize that by bracketing the term you taught me about, I needed to follow it with a cut-off stroke as in "nowiki ... /nowiki". This stupid nescience of mine caused the glitch and the problem on your page. Perhaps the less I meddle with these things, the better for all concerned. Thanks Neil. I've fixed the error on your page as well.Nishidani (talk) 10:40, 18 June 2008 (UTC)
D'oh, that's the sort of thing I should normally have spotted <cringe>. Just shows what happens when one's mind is occupied with other matters (and rushing for a dentist appointment). Chrissie Wellington

Hats off to her, and a beam of glory, under this year's roiling sun as I hoe the vegie patch, from a balding pate in that extraordinary woman's direction. Looks like, physically, she's the female equivalent, without all the hampering history of race scorn and bureaucratic violence shackling her career, of Wa-Tho-Huk. I'm writing with a mild attack of melancholy, but perhaps it's just an oldtimer's hangover. My hachimaki's off to Nadal, but I've seen him play in an earlier life, aka Borg, and my instincts always go to players whose style evinces effortless grace under pleasure (!!! pressure), and Federer was, by now in his heyday, one of that select class, a combination of McEnroe's cheeky touch and unerring eye, and the master of the 60s, Rod Laver who, like Federer, just played on the right day a notch or three above the best the world could put before him, and normally, just go on improving under strain. It's the aesthetic dimension that counts for me in the end, not power and youth. But then I'm an old fogey! Cheers, mate Nishidani (talk) 10:15, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Thanks. Sorry you had to clean up after me. I feel older than I am,

I have a long history of complaining about complaining. I have thrown my hat into the ring in egregious cases when the system is being rigged to get at someone, but I think one should just slug it out on the talk page. I really haven't the faintest idea what to do, because I haven't made a complaint in the past, and I have no intention of doing so in the future. It's just I dislike intensely this antisemitic slur in argument, and got fed up. All I wanted was for someone to note a problem and tell the culpable to back off. No Guantanamo trial. Thanks however for catching my oversight. I've posted an apology to Amoruso's page. I've told Shevashalosh I appreciate his withdrawal of his remarks, on the Lehi page. Nishidani (talk) 22:01, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

In retrospect, ignorance is no excuse, and my oversight was indeed unfair. I'd never noticed much. Come to think of it, someone else tipped me off Zeq had dobbed me in for a 3RR trap infringement he'd organized with a pal, which I walked right into. I'm glad you picked it up, Neil. The only time I reported a crime to the police was a burglary at 4 am in a shop underneath my apartment. I phoned the cops and even jumped out the door and chased the car to get the number plate. The cops arrived, and didn't know what to do, dithering, while I was telling them to phone headquarters to get surveillance on such and such a freeway for a car of such and such a description with the first three letters of the number plate. I walked off for a stroll and a smoke, came back to go to bed, after 40 minutes, and was stopped by two detectives who tried to grill me as a suspect. They didn't like my attitude, and were just about to arrest me, and I was just about to kinghit one of them who tried to push me up against the wall, when a young cop came up and told them I was the bloke who'd tipped them off. :) Nishidani (talk) 22:33, 7 July 2008 (UTC)

Wasn't able to comment

But I don't take lightly Nishidani's ludicrous allegations. His ally of his, user:Meteormaker has recently stalked me, which is why he said I stalked him on an article I edited before and watched it. I never said he was antisemitic, and I explained this to him. It's a false allegation. He on the other hand said I'm a terrorist fanatic. The chutzpah of this person is amazing. His actions are very troubling. Amoruso (talk) 22:50, 8 July 2008 (UTC)

ARV/Twinkle

As far as I know, there is nowhere to try out Twinkle. Certainly when I first installed it, I made major bloomers (marking my own edits as vandalism!) There is documentation at Wikipedia:Twinkle/doc, but this is not really helpful. Someone should write a users guide. To report Runtshit vandalism, go to their user page or talk page, clock on the ARV tab, select Vandalism, and write "Runtshit" in the main panel. It will be dealt with within minutes.

I have always had reouble using Twinkle for sockpuppet reports. It is counter-intuitive, and seems to treat the suspected puppet as the sockmaster, and vv. Have you managed to use it, or do you create SSP reports from scratch? RolandR (talk) 15:48, 16 July 2008 (UTC)

Oxford Wikimania 2010 and Wikimedia UK v2.0 Notice

Hi,

As a regularly contributing UK Wikipedian, we were wondering if you wanted to contribute to the Oxford bid to host the 2010 Wikimania conference. Please see here for details of how to get involved, we need all the help we can get if we are to put in a compelling bid.

We are also in the process of forming a new UK Wikimedia chapter to replace the soon to be folded old one. If you are interested in helping shape our plans, showing your support or becoming a future member or board member, please head over to the Wikimedia UK v2.0 page and let us know. We plan on holding an election in the next month to find the initial board, who will oversee the process of founding the company and accepting membership applications. They will then call an AGM to formally elect a new board who after obtaining charitable status will start the fund raising, promotion and active support for the UK Wikimedian community for which the chapter is being founded.

You may also wish to attend the next London meet-up at which both of these issues will be discussed. If you can't attend this meetup, you may want to watch Wikipedia:Meetup, for updates on future meets.

We look forward to hearing from you soon, and we send our apologies for this automated intrusion onto your talk page!

Apologies

Sorry if my playfulness was offensive, the precise opposite of my intended meaning. I've always worked here with a sense that it is both farcical and futile to do so, and not a day passes that I haven't consider withdrawing. Only an irrepressible sense of loyalty to a victimised population has nagged me to persist, but I don't really think battling in here does anything to improve their image. Now word that I had done a decade ago a 4,500 page manuscript translation of a very obscure text seems to have reached the ears of specialists, who are asking me if I might revise it for publication. I don't believe this possible, since it would only interest an extremely small number of specialists in an arcane area, but if they persist in thinking there is point to it, I shall have to devote myself to the task for a good while. I've been thinking along the lines of archiving my work here for over a week, even tried to do it myself, without success. A blank page for occasional queries and replies is what I would leave. If Elonka can do that, once I have posted the stalking evidence on Ashley's page for consultation there, well and good. Thanks from the heart for your help and impeccable, friendly manners over the year. Best regards, Nishidani (talk) 13:12, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

I had no idea

I'm really sorry to hear about that. I agree that his approach at that article can discourage others from participating, but I had no idea that it led to your literally getting sick over it and leaving in disgust. I'm so conflicted about this candidate's nomination. I too, share your view that a rather dogmatic and rigid approach to editing at that article has discouraged others from participating. But I also feel that as long as he is not going to be taking admin actions in that domain, he would be no worse than many of the other editors we have to regularly deal with whose interpretation of NPOV is not so consistent.

Anyway, I think it's too late for me to go back to oppose. To be honest, I caved a little when other editors failed to see what was wrong with his edits at Rachel Corrie. Succumbed to groupthink I guess. I hope you don't think less of me now (I do. I feel like a bit of a coward actually, through no fault of your own). I also hope I haven't offended you by my lack of commitment. I did not mean to downplay the substance of your own complaint. I know exactly what you are talking about when you say that the phrasing in that diff was dishonest or at the very least a good faith misrepresentation. Please accept my apologies and best wishes. Tiamuttalk 14:43, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Dear, dear Tiamut (sorry, I don't know - yet - how to write that in Arabic), you have absolutely nothing to apologise for. I too was tempted to modify my "vote", as I like to see a responsive editor. I also like to see substantial article-building experience in a candidate. I felt it best to wait a while in order to consider the right response. Also, there were other factors in my illness, but the stress certainly didn't help. I am not in the slightest little bit offended by your changing your vote.
Oh, and I was going to thank you anyway for your support there. When one is under attack such support makes a huge difference, and I appreciate it enormously.
You're doing good work at Rachel Corrie - it will be interesting to see what happens when/if you get into more contentious areas there. I agree with you about the "recentism" on the kidnapping attempt. Ironically, that section is still largely as I wrote it! I had noticed an ongoing edit-war over it, so I just read ALL the sources, and re-wrote it in my own words; the result was accepted by everybody, with only a few small modifications. I wish more editors would take the trouble to actually read the sources in full before summarising/paraphrasing/quoting them - it would save a lot of time in the long run. I think the whole article needs re-arranging for clarity (probably in chronological order) and great chunks of it need to be rewritten. Good luck, you'll need it there!
تحياتي وحـبـي --NSH001 (talk) 16:02, 13 December 2008 (UTC)
PS. A wee hint: when adding a new section to the bottom of a talk page, it's best to do so by using the "new section" tab at the top of the talk page. (It may appear either as a "+" or as "new section", you can change its appearance in your user preferences settings.) That way the correct section name will appear in your user contributions and article history listings. Also means you are immune from "edit conflict"s if someone else is editing the same page at the same time.
Thanks for responding NSH001. Yes, I have been avoiding the more controversial sections of that article, primarily because they need (as I see it) a massive rewrite. They are confusing and rather unfairly weighted towards the Israeli government/military point of view on the details surrounding her death. The witness statements chosen seem to be designed to introduce doubt (notice that "Joe Smith" is quoted a number of times using slightly different wording which really isn't contradictory, but appears to be so by the way its been juxtaposed. Just one example of the many problems in those sections.) Anyway, I'm going to hold off on that until a)I can understand the strange guidelines at the top of the page better (do you know when it is okay to use the ISM as a source and when it's not? Because I don't really understand that.) and b)until I finish doing some more work on Palestinian costumes, which I'd like to get up to featured article status some time soon.
Anyway, thanks for your comments (and the tip about new sections on talk pages, I never knew that). Take care of yourself my friend. Tiamuttalk 16:09, 13 December 2008 (UTC)

Your note

I'll be watching for you on the news. Al Jazeera and Al Manar have been giving excellent coverage of both what's happening in Gaza and the popular protests against the assault on the besieged civilian population there. BBC pickings are slim since I don't think their journalists have been able to enter Gaza. Al Jazeera and Al Manar use local reporters so the Israeli ban preventing foreign journalists from entering doesn't afect them. Anyway, take care of yourslef there and thanks for the note. Don't get involved Neil, though your words are refreshing. One needs voices that stay out of the trenches, observe, and drop in an illuminating remark when absolutely needed. Thanks for the reply. You were at Gatwick? I hate airports or air travel these days anyway. From strip searches to having everything in my bag wiped down for whatever it is they are searching for when they feed those cloth swabs into machines that tell them whether you need to be detained or not, the whole deal is a real rip off. You pay something like 1000 USD to take a plane trip of a few hours. You are treated like a prisoner going to jail, only allowed selected personal items for carrying on board. I was worried about my crochet needles the last time. Seriously. They've confiscated nail clippers, closed cans of pop (which they say they throw out, as thought that makes it better) ... anyway, enough ranting.
I have that page on my watchlist, so whenever you want to start something up there, go for it and I'll pop in whenever I can. I got tied into something at Nizar Rayan and I have to get back to Khalil Raad if I want to make a DYK nom. Ah Wikipedia. Tiamuttalk 23:13, 13 March 2009 (UTC)
The only intelligent thing Albert Speer ever did was to walk around the world, on foot, while serving out a few decades, for his complicity in the Holocaust. at Spandau. He did this by, every day, reading up in the prison library works on geography, and then the next day walking around the exercise block, or in his cell, imagining, road by road, byway by lane, the landscape from Berlin to the Bering Straits (must have been tough conjuring up variety on the Siberian tundra stretch!). I think this a model for post-modern tourism. Read about a place intensely, and then walk through it without ever leaving one's library, kitchen, garden (a bit distracting there, since gardens are too competitive in their natural allure) or dunny. It's cheap, without hassles, and, usually, far more visually impressive than what you actually manage to observe if you are foolish enough to travel in the pseudo-real world. I'm becoming a Platonist, dammit. Isn't basically this what we are doing in writing wiki articles, after all? Cheers, friends Nishidani (talk) 16:16, 14 March 2009 (UTC)
My preferred mode of tourism is on a bicycle, with camping gear on board, and only a vague plan of the route. So if you come across something interesting, you can stop and inspect it. A more intimate way of getting to know a country than any other form of transport, except possibly walking, but it does allow you to cover more territory than walking. Two lovely people you are. Would be nice to share if we could magically transport somewhere to have a drink together and talk about things not related to this Wiki world. Anyone coming to Nazareth anytime soon? ;)
About your question NSH001, I'm not sure it's passport, so much as my name. Arab names are not cool to sport in most airports these days. I've been strip searched a handful of times, but even once was one too many for me. Call me traditional, but I share Benjamin Franklin's sentiment that "Those who prefer security to liberty deserve neither." (or something like that) The last time I flew while waiting in line in my socks for my turn to pass through the metal detector, I caught the eye of the woman in front of me and said something like: "Welcome to the wonderful world of 21st century air travel." She replied in a little too loud voice, "Better to safe than the alternative." I wanted to quote Franklin to her, and then caught myself thinking, "That could raise alarms," and I did as I am sure people in dictatorships the West derides as undemocratic often do: I shut up, walked through the metal detector, smiled at the Customs official who handed me my passport, thanked my lucky stars there was no strip search, and clutching my crochet needles almost grateful they had been passed over, boarded the plane. All for the bargain price of 1000 USD.
Anyway, I have spent too mych time talking and not enough editing. So I'm off. Take care you both. Tiamuttalk 20:43, 14 March 2009 (UTC)

DRV

I have opened a DRV on the wrangler categories, on which you opined in an earlier cfd. (This is a result of your hint in the DRV ... there was an earlier one on Wranglers. Note that the 'deleters' in both cfds are the same regulars with the same ridiculous argument - there is an inbuilt 'delete' tendency.) Occuli (talk) 12:33, 25 March 2009 (UTC)

Hey Neil, thanks for that. By the way, any chance of geting a mug shot of that genius (Wendy Doniger's word for him) onto the page. I've seen on the web quite a few snaps (One of him at a lecture in one of the two articles in the refs from The Hindu. I think his page at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem also has one. But I'm confounded by the mechanics of all this, how to download, get permission, paste up. Without causing any excess fibrillations in the grey matter, could you try and check if anything like this is uploadable to Wiki Commons or the page? Neil, could you check this page? It has numerous photos (the first captures well the settlement and the Palestinian village in one snap, on Susya. Since it is all from the CPT group, I expect somewhere these are free use photos and therefore could be uploaded to Wiki Commons, at least the lead photo, for eventual inclusion on that page? "easily verifiable by a google search"

what did you mean by this edit summary [[5]]? easily verifiable that it exists? or easily verifiable that it's a reliable, third party source? if it's easily verifiable that it's a third party, reliable source, could you show me where to verify that? or, alternatively, if you meant it's easily verifiable that it exists, could you show me how that's relevant to the concerns of it not being a third party, reliable source? thanks. Theserialcomma (talk) 22:38, 11 April 2009 (UTC)

The blindingly obvious, namely that you or I or anyone else can easily verify the truth of what Weiss agrees on his site, by simply typing in "normanfinkelstein.com" or "norman finkelstein" into google. The policies you quote are there to keep out garbage, not to suppress the obvious truth. NSH001 (talk) 22:46, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
it's obvious that the normanfinkelstein.com does not appear when you google search it. it is not, however, obvious as to how we can correctly enter this into the encyclopedia without engaging in original research (googling it to verify it doesn't exist) or using unreliable sources (blogs). until there is a reliable source stating this, there's no reconciling its addition. Theserialcomma (talk) 22:48, 11 April 2009 (UTC)
This is patently absurd. Verifying that what a source says is indeed true is not original research, it is verifying what the source says. It is what good, careful editors should be doing every day - we don't just put something in because a source says so, we look for corroborating evidence. One may indeed speculate about the motives and identity of whoever is behind this censorship of one of the most scrupulous scholars on the Israel-Palestine conflict (who also happens to be the son of holocaust survivors), but for that we do indeed need additional reliable sources. NSH001 (talk) 10:36, 12 April 2009 (UTC)
i agree that google IS clearly censoring the website (for whatever reason - i have no idea), but that is not the point. the fact that it's happening, and we can verify it with a google search, and a blog has mentioned it, does not mean it's suitable for the encyclopedia. this argument is solely about reliable sources WP:V, WP:RS, not truth. is the guy's blog a third party, reliable source? i don't think so. is the fact that he's a notable and trusted source, does that fact make his blog trusted and reliable? i don't think so. but that's what i'm arguing. i think you are arguing something different. Names and toolservers

It isn't an issue for me but it seems to be an issue for you, Hebrides and others. I threw out talking to the toolserver editor for those of you that have an issue with it. It is a Mexican standoff. The rules say if it is on that list, it should be tagged. I am going to tag it. If you feel it shouldn't be tag, do what you feel you should do to make sure it doesn't end up on the list of articles to be tagged. Now, this really is my final time discussing this topic. I have repeated myself too many times. If you and anyone else don't want names to be tagged as orphans, do what YOU feel you need to do to make sure it doesn't end up on a list of articles to be tagged. Nakba

Thank you, that's very interesting. You wrote: "It is standard practice, in English, to transliterate the definite article -ال as al-, lower case, except when a capital is required, such as at the start of a sentence." As a capital is required in titles, I was wondering why people were still saying "Al Nakba" would be wrong. That's what confused me. Personally, if we were going to use it, I'd be for Nakba without the definite article, I think. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 15:53, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Actuary

I understand why you deleted the link, but I disagree. I looked at it quickly, and didn't disagree. But I see it has been added back (with an explanation). I looked at it closer, and think it is an acceptable addition. I first thought it was a personal website, largely talking about the author's experiences therefore questionable. While some sections do talk about the author's experiences, they constitute a minority of the overall website, which does have decent and relevant information for someone interested in the actuarial field.--SPhilbrickT 00:50, 18 July 2009 (UTC)

hi Neil, i saw that on Talk:Stop_the_War_Coalition/GA1, you said "Anti-war articles can be hard to work on because of the shortage of good sources; mainstream WP:RS are usually biased against the anti-war position and are often, in my experience, inaccurate." For these reasons, you might be interested in putting CASMII on your watchlist, and possibly trying to explain these sort of problems on the CASMII talk page. i can understand the request for more references that someone made there using a template, but i still fail to understand the threat (made in the template) that the CASMII article could be deleted for "lack of notability". In the context where Iran has been threatened with military intervention and is already subject to sanctions, and in the context of documented en.wikipedia demographics-related biases, and remembering that WP:RS does have italics around in relation to the subject at hand, the threat seems to me unreasonable. Anyway, i've said enough. i know almost nothing about you, so you can act on my suggestion reasonably independently of me. :) Boud (talk) 00:16, 29 August 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for letting me know. Yes, finding accurate WP:RS sources is a perennial difficulty with anti-war articles. I've had a quick look at the article, and I don't think it is very well written, and in fact needs pretty much a complete rewrite. Sorry! If I get some time I may have a go at it, but in the meantime I've added CASMII's logo to the page. Hope that helps. --NSH001 (talk) 08:22, 29 August 2009 (UTC)
No offence taken regarding the "not very well written and needs pretty much a complete rewrite", even though most of the contributions are by me. Wiki, wiki, wiki! "If you do not want your writing to be edited, used, and redistributed at will, then do not submit it here." :) Some of the problems are due to deletions of wikipedia entries for smaller organisations that merged into CASMII. Feel free to do a complete rewrite, though preferably retaining most of the content and references, and maybe adding more and/or better references. Cool to see how you added the logo - it looks to me like you found the correct template and used it properly. It's a pity that this is for en.wikipedia only, but that's a fundamental problem until some international legal treaty regarding fair use is created, signed and ratified... i'm still very much a newbie at non-own-image upload. Hi NSH001, I replied on Anthony Appleyard's talk page. I did not quite understand what you were referring to when you said "his vowel pattern doesn't quite fit either". Nableezy

Hi NSH001, thanks for the message. Unfortunately I am quite short of time to help with this. My quick thought on appealing would be to request that it be reviewed as to whether a two month extension is appropriate when the underlying sanction was for one month, and set to expire one day after the violation. I think it's relevant that another admin had declined enforcement. But I can't say it's likely that it will be reversed without some participation from Nableezy. Just a quick thought, anyway, in response. Regards Mackan79 (talk) 04:43, 4 January 2010 (UTC)

Hi NSH001. I would like to work on two things regarding what has happened to Nableezy. On is to file an appeal of Sandstein's decision which I will begin in my user space shortly. The second, concurrent to this, would be opening a User RfC on Sandstein regading his abuse of his admin powers. I have asked Gatoclass for some advice on how to proceed. I hope he responds soon. When I have drafts up in my user space, I will be contacting you for feedback. I hope you will co-sign both the appeal and the User RfC. Also, check out Nableezy's talk page to see what has happened most recently and why these steps are absolutely necessary. Thanks. Tiamuttalk 19:42, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks NSH001. I hope Nableezy signs up for the appeal too, and then we can all co-sign under this name. I'm trying to remain calm, cool, and collected, though I must admit, I have something of a pounding headache right now and am quite hot under my collar. There is nothing more frustrating to me than arbitrariness and an abuse of power, particularly when it negativly impacts those I like so much. Oh well. I'm taking a deep breath and drinking some water. Here's hoping for the best. Tiamuttalk 21:42, 4 January 2010 (UTC)
FYI, Nableezy has decided to file an appeal at AE. Tiamuttalk 21:21, 5 January 2010 (UTC)
I hope you're hanging in through that cold spate. I've heard its quite the disaster throughout much of Europe, and having lived through some ice storms in North America, I understand what it can be like. I hope you have a portable gas heater and some backup supplies. Its a good experience to learn to keep canned foods, candles, and other things for just such emergencies.
I wouldn't worry too much about how you responded to Sandstein's decision. It wasn't so terrible and he doesn't seem to care much how he reacted, which certainly wasn't ideal. I think its okay to express a little outrage every now and then, when faced with little outrages. Its a sign that one is still alive. Stay warm my friend. Tiamuttalk 17:20, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

Nazeer

Hi, Give me a heads up if you make further tweaks on the Nazeer/Nazir disambiguation as regards the horse Nazeer just so we keep the info accurate. (He was never a race horse! (smile)). I had to fix some of your redirected links that others missed, plus I did a rephrase of the entry at the disambig. The horse is extremely significant in modern Arabian breeding, and the only reason the article is so short is because there are only two editors at WPEQ who are working much on Arabian horse "biographies" and neither of us care deeply about the "straight Egyptian" bloodlines. Those who do care, care a lot, though, so I kind of babysit the article to be sure it stays within wiki's five pillars and such. Montanabw(talk) 21:21, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

ANI report

Hi NSH001! I am informing you that I have reported a post made by you on Talk:Carlos Latuff, which I believe crosses all red lines of acceptable behavior on Wikipedia. —Ynhockey (Talk) 02:32, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Arbitration enforcement warning

The Arbitration Committee has permitted administrators to impose, at their own discretion, sanctions on any editor working on pages broadly related to the Arab-Israeli conflict if the editor repeatedly or seriously fails to adhere to the purpose of Wikipedia, any expected standards of behavior, or any normal editorial process. If you engage in further inappropriate behavior in this area, you may be placed under sanctions including blocks, a revert limitation or an article ban. The committee's full decision can be read at Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration/Palestine-Israel articles#Final decision.

This warning is in relation to the ANI thread mentioned above. Please do not use article talk pages for political commentary unrelated (or only tenuously related) to the subject of the article (WP:SOAP), and especially do not make inflammatory statements of this sort (WP:BATTLE). Thanks,  Sandstein  19:25, 22 February 2010 (UTC)

Reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, will be commencing a two-month trial at approximately 23:00, 2010 June 15 (UTC).

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under flagged protection. Flagged protection is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 18:21, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

Helen Bamber article

Hi NSH001, I am very puzzled about the prosed deletion of Helen Bamber. I couldn't tell if it was the unmade page for The Helen Bamber Foundation someone wanted to delete or Helen's page itself. The info about Bamber seems terribly important in terms of British politics and refugee history. She's a very significant figure in the UK in those terms. Why would they move to scrap a fleshed out article like this, do you think? Is it to do with low viewer stats? Your insight appreciated. Hi, Thanks for the info. Oddly, just as your message came through, I got a mail from the Foundation saying that Helen doesn't like the article and asked for it to be deleted. She says she's like to re-write it but doesn't have the time. Guess that sheds a bit of light on that one. As you say, I imagine it's doubtful that the deletion would get passed, even if it's from her. Does it usually work that people in living biography's ask for certain untrue, unsourced or misleading pieces to be removed? Will read up. Best wishes Spanglej (talk) 15:45, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Hi Neil, I moved the "Character" section of the Helen Bamber article to the discussion page re WP:BLP - sensitivity and being 'conservative'. Bamber has challenged the article and does find material contentious, so this seems the right move re good faith and respect. What do you think? Best wishes Spanglej (talk) 02:04, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Your edit summary

I don't know whether or not it was in good faith, but that has nothing to do with my summary, since it is obvious that he doesn't know French. --Insert coins (talk) 18:06, 1 July 2010 (UTC)

Philip Weiss

The dab page was not intended as advertising. This is a common name. The WP at the moment only has one article using the name, but the intention was to provide space for other uses should other articles appear. I am fine with the move to a redirect which will have the same impact so I won't revert. I did the same thing with Adam Horowitz which did have existing articles using multiple names. I just wanted to clarify the intent. -Classicfilms (talk) 16:07, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

I should have mentioned above that I did this because after doing a search for where else "Philip Weiss" is used in the Wikipedia, I came across two references to "Philip Weiss Auctions," in two articles: T206 Honus Wagner and CSS Alabama. I thus made the dab page in case either mention was turned into an article. Again, with a common name like this, the goal was to provide the subject with a dedicated article which he now has. -Classicfilms (talk) 17:56, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

AFSC Criticism Section

Thank you for your attention to the criticism section of the American Friends Service Committee article the other day. I'd like to get some additional input on that section when you have a chance. I have a conflict of interest (I work for AFSC), so I find it hard to be sure how to edit the criticism section without being highly biased. The first sentence is the one I'd like to find ways to address (and source). While I could provide several sources to point to criticisms that claim AFSC is a Communist front, that criticism is generally raised as a base-less political accusation, not criticisms based on a difference of opinion or AFSC's failure to perform. Much of the FBI file actually supports both sides of those point (there are a couple references to Hoover wanting proof we were a front, and investigators being unable to find any). More recent claims get completely wacky in this regard (my favorite being the suggestion a couple years ago our we were either running or a pawn of the Cuban government, it wasn't really clear which), but it is indeed criticism.

My personal opinion is that the section should be limited to pointing our places where AFSC has been criticized based on things related to actual behavior, or that are well documented. So I'd include the criticisms from Friends, and the FBI spying (both currently documented), without rebuttal. But I'd like provide context to the communist debate since it's not based on anything real.

I started a discussion of this issue a few weeks ago, but I haven't gotten any feedback yet. It would be great to get some guidance. --Ahc (talk) 15:01, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

San Remo Manual

The "Explanation" that accompanies the text of article 102 of the San Remo Manual clarifies that Article 54 (1) and (2) of Additional Protocol I to the Geneva Conventions prohibit the starvation of a civilian community regardless of the motive involved. The San Remo "Explanation" clarifies that a declaration or establishment of a blockade is prohibited if it has the sole purpose of starving the civilian population or denying it other objects essential for its survival. It also provides that a blockade is rendered unlawful if the effect on the civilian population is excessive in relation to the lawful military purpose. The cases covered by the latter clause (102(b)) always include blockades that result in malnutrition or starvation.

I added material about that to Legal assessments of the Gaza flotilla raid and San Remo Manual on International Law Applicable to Armed Conflicts at Sea harlan (talk) 18:05, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, impressive work as usual. --NSH001 (talk) 22:04, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

NSPORT

I noticed you had updated the notability requirements to NSPORT to include a podium finish in any WTC Ironman and 70.3 race, not just the championship races. I would contend that with the pace and rate new races are being added (particularly for the 70.3 distance) that some of this is watering down the meaningfulness of placing in the top three. Just this past weekend there were four 70.3 distance race under the WTC brand. Additionally, I think this places some undue weight on the WTC brand and leaves it open to include podium finishes for any of the newly emerged Rev3 brand of iron/half-iron distance race. Thoughts? Perhaps this needs to be discussed within in Triathlon Project. Barkeep Chat | $ 19:42, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

Feel free to start a section on WT:WPTRI (I'm feeling a bit lonely on there). I thought the previous version was too strict, since it would only allow 3 athletes of each gender to qualify each year, and didn't think that was what you had intended. I also wanted to include REV3, Challenge Series, and Abu Dhabi, but not until we had articles on them - it would look a bit silly to have redlinks in such a section! --NSH001 (talk) 20:01, 21 September 2010 (UTC)
You're right in feeling lonely since there may only be 2-3 active editors for the project (present company included).
Outside of ITU, I think it's hard to nail down what constitutes notable finish in a simple bulleted list or paragraph. Part of it is the race itself. Is the winner of IM Malaysia or China more notable than the winner of Wildflower or Challenge Roth? Abu Dhabi is an impressive win but the race is only in its infancy. I've seen a few age groupers/non-pros place in the top 3 at a 70.3 race. I think what makes a finish notable (within in the sport of triathlon) is a deep field of competitors. What about keeping notability for WTC races at the championship level and add qualifier list of "other" races - races that can stand on their own (or have the potential to) as a separate Wikipedia article? I think we should keep in mind the larger Wikipedia policy of WP:NOTE in mind. Barkeep 20:41, 21 September 2010 (UTC)

don't revert so quickly (or at least read the edit summary first)

You reverted my test within seconds of my edit. I wrote that I would undo the change shortly. Your revert messed up my test. 159.226.169.151 (talk) 14:57, 26 September 2010 (UTC)

The ever-importunate ageing drongo seeks assistance from the young once more

I notice that somehow everything I archived after the section on -Odd we have no wiki articles- in my archive 10, doesn't show up or register. I've tried to figure out why the rest, which is last, has been disappeared, but dagnabit, it's beyond me. Any ideas pal? Thanks Nishidani (talk) 11:30, 27 September 2010 (UTC)

Done, and replied on Nishidani's talk page. NSH001 (talk) 17:51, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
Ya still a tyke in this geezer's wheezing braincode. Having written that I hope you twig that 'tyke' in some dialects means just, a kid, a young bloke, and is affectionate, and don't mean nuthen else!
Thanks (in the best non-Nableezian sense), mate. Yer a dinkum trooper, even if yer a paficist.Nishidani (talk) 18:00, 27 September 2010 (UTC)
