Re:photo requests

Hi, I guess I do do requests, but for places like those, you may be waiting a while. Kanata is a long bus ride, and Hull is a fairly long walk (short bus ride, but out of my way). I can do anything in Central Ottawa though, or the Riverview area. -- Earl Andrew - talk 17:09, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

McDonald's

WhisperToMe -

I am contacting you on behalf of McDonald’s as I work on their communications team. I've noticed that you've made edits recently and are one of the top editors of the McDonald's page. First off, I wanted to thank you for the fantastic work you’ve done in keeping the McDonald’s Wikipedia page up to date and accurate. The page is very well written, shows your professionalism and exemplifies the credibility in using Wikipedia to learn about McDonald’s!

Second, while you seem to have things under control, I wanted to reach out to you to see if there’s any information or materials that we can provide you with to further enhance the page. For example, as McDonald’s continues to add new menu items and expand the number of operating restaurants around the world, we have a number of new facts and figures (nutritional information on products, number of operating stores worldwide, etc.) that you might find beneficial. Additionally, we’ve established a presence in the social media world on Facebook and Twitter that we’re increasingly relying on to interact with our customers. Whatever the case may be, please use me as a resource.

I look forward to hearing from you and thanks again! Egerstea (talk) 23:12, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Air Koryo

I didn't remove the photo - simply moved it to the Gallery. In any event, there is already an article on the airport and no need to add to the congested lead. Best regards, --Kristoferb (talk) 11:33, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I don't disagree. However, you have no evidence to support your claim and I, for one, don't recall any obvious office in the airport. An airport, moreover, is not simply the passenger terminal - there are likely many out buildings in the vicinity - any of which could be the head office. --Kristoferb (talk) 12:42, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not convinced. I don't think you make a viable case for repeating images in a string of article where each image holds greater than average value. --Kristoferb (talk) 12:52, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
i.e. North Korean articles (not exactly an excess of quality images floating around). Why should we repeat a generic photo of the airside of a terminal in which the HQ may or may not be located... in the already crowded lead no less? If you want to put it in the Gallery, I have absolutely no objection.

Why on earth are you so keen to worsen an article just for the sake of showing an irrelevant portion of a building already adequately covered elsewhere? Seems misguided to me. Good luck with your email.--Kristoferb (talk) 13:14, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Air Koryo is an AIRLINE - planes are somewhat important. Clearly this conversation is going nowhere fast, so goodnight.--Kristoferb (talk) 13:22, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
For third party readers: Airline articles still have airport photos, and contributors have judged that they are relevant. I do not agree with Kristoferb's argument, and I believe that existing Wikipedia articles have set a precedent that it is okay to have an airport photo in the article, and that precedent opposes Kristoferb's viewpoint. Plus aircraft exteriors are not the only aspect of an airline. There are also check-in machines, aircraft interiors, flight attendants, etc. etc. WhisperToMe (talk) 13:32, 9 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Admin, I'd like to request you to please replace the main image of Lahore (in the facebook-wiki page of Lahore: http://www.facebook.com/#!/pages/Lahore-Pakistan/108104849224069) to this image (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:329px-Lahore%27s_Montage.jpg). Gatwick Airport (inclusion of non-aviation businesses)

Hello user en:User:WhisperToMe: I disagree with you re inclusion of non-aviation businesses on/close to airport premises in Gatwick Airport article specifically and other airport articles generally for the following reasons: There may be loads of relatively small such companies that are located on or near various airport premises; unless these are notable for playing an important role in the airport's development even as non-aviation businesses, why mention them in an airport-specific article? What value does it add to the article in an airport/aviation context? Where do you draw the line, especially when adding this information to an already very comprehensive and detailed article such as the one about Gatwick Airport? In Gatwick's case in particular there are/have been a number of other non-aviation firms on or near its premises that, as to the best of my knowledge, did not locate themselves there primarily because of the airport, including for example CP Ships (a container shipping company that was taken over by Hapag Lloyd a few years ago) and the investment arms of several banks such as RBS for instance. I have therefore removed the relevant passage under the "Facilities" heading of the article, which is basically what the anonymous user using IP address 86.163.231.70 already did in 2010.Devanahalli2008 (talk)

Hello again user en:User:WhisperToMe: Many thanks for your efforts to reply to the points I'd raised earlier on this page. I noted your responses. Re Western GeCo, I still think it would be better to include this info in a separate article linked to the "Facilities" section of the "Gatwick Airport" article. Re mentioning that BCal and Laker had their HQs on the airport's premises in the past, what about other LGW airline HQs preceding theirs, eg BUA (1968-70), Air Couriers, Lloyd International, Overseas Aviation, Transglobe and, more recently, CityFlyer Express? This info is actually available in the relevant airline articles. Devanahalli2008 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 19:33, 13 February 2011 (UTC).[reply]

HPD Controversies sections

As you know, there has been a number of controversies with alleged beatings and I'm wondering if perhaps it might be time to include them in the Houston Police Department, but I don't want them to take over the whole swaths of the article. A week or so ago, there was someone that started a minor article on officers arrested, and I'm pondering whether to shift it over to History of the Houston Police Department since there wasn't much information on it, but in the case of the beatings, it might be a totally different manner. Basically, I'm asking for an opinion and some help with the matter since I'm a little too close to the article and the topic as a whole. --Hourick (talk) 17:11, 13 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I guess that'll be put in, but what about the arrested officers section? Since there isn't really an issue there, should they simply be pushed into the history article in the appropriate section or just deleted altogether?
Well, looking at the other articles, there is no such section, but there is a "CONTROVERSY" section which includes some fairly substantial issues that have merited quite a bit of news coverage. I'm more inclined to do that then to simply name officers who have been arrested on something that's fairly isn't notable. But again, considering I put quite a bit of time on these two articles, you can see how my perception might be skewed. I started collecting bookmarks for references and will see how to put it properly, but I would appreciate it if you or others would keep an eye on it so I am to remain impartial on the matter without over compensating one way or another. I hope to start on it sometime this week. --Hourick (talk) 06:26, 14 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Started [new article] on the topic. Rough draft, so depending on how it forms, it MAY be a new article hooked to HPD, or simply condensed and merged with it. We'll see how it goes, but I figured you might see what I'm doing. Mind you, it's very rough. --Hourick (talk) 19:56, 15 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I created the Chad Holley article, and added a smaller section on the HPD article. Hopefully Chad Holley's will survive some Deleting happy editors and attract some contributions.

RE:Bakirköy

Hallo, you are right, I forgot to justify the removal. Shame on myself! The problem is that Bakirköy is both a neighborhood, a municipality (belediye) and a district (which is very large, extending over Yesilköy, Yesilyürt, Florya, etc.). Now, the article deals only with the neighborhood (it is specified in the incipit), and the headquarters of THY are not in Bakirköy (neighborhood), but in Yesilköy (and there belongs the info and the picture). That's why I removed the picture. Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 07:49, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hallo, an article about the district as in the Turkish Wikipedia does not exists (yet) on Wikipedia English. Anyway, i think that the approach used here is correct, since in Istanbul when one says "I am going to Bakirköy" he/she means the neighborhood, not the district, which has only administrative purposes. Until 1970 Bakirköy was a village surrounded by countryside (as it was Yesilköy, where we have an apartment). Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 08:06, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this make sense! And also the general info, which belongs to the district, as THY, Air War School (Yesilyürt), etc. By the way, is it not deep night now in Houston?  :-) Cheers, Alex2006 (talk) 09:46, 17 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion nomination of Hussa

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Hussa requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hang on}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion, or "db", tag; if no such tag exists, then the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate and adding a hang-on tag is unnecessary), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Yaksar (let's chat) 19:42, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Removing Speedy at Hussa

Welcome to Wikipedia. It might not have been your intention, but you removed a speedy deletion tag from Hussa, a page you have created yourself. If you do not believe the page should be deleted, you can place a {{hangon}} tag on the page, under the existing speedy deletion tag (please do not remove the speedy deletion tag), and make your case on the page's talk page. Administrators will look at your reasoning before deciding what to do with the page. Thank you. - SDPatrolBot (talk) 21:18, 19 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Artistic depictions

Hi,

It's been a while but I wanted to respond to your note from a few months ago.

You're asserting artistic depictions aren't OR. Of course they are. An illustration of the KAL shootdown by a Wikipedia editor for the Wikipedia article is of course OR. The artist didn't see the event, or photographs of the event, and is interpreting the event based on his own research. That's the definition of OR. Tempshill (talk) 20:13, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're missing some important aspects of this debate. See this illustration, which I think is the Arrow Air illustration that was being debated in the talk page you linked me. (The illustration has since been changed to a single-aircraft illustration.)
It is pretty easy to come up with many reasons why this illustration must be, at a minimum, labeled prominently as an artist's depiction of the event, and why we must not claim that it is accurate. By the way, I don't strongly object anymore to including illustrations like this on Wikipedia, because even though they involve OR, they can help to illustrate — but I insist that every time an image like this is used, the caption must state that it's an artist's depiction. Anyway, here are some places the illustration is not accurate:
  • Was plane #1's pitch exactly as shown?
  • Plane #1's yaw?
  • Plane #1's roll?
  • Plane #2's pitch?
  • Plane #2's yaw?
  • Plane #2's roll?
None of the above is given precisely in the incident report; the artist is guessing. It's highly unlikely the two planes' attitudes were precisely level like this.
  • What was the angle of deformation or bending of the wings on plane #1? Were they both really uniformly rigid as depicted? Really?
  • Angle of deformation or bending of the wings on plane #2?
  • Both planes are shown without ailerons. Is this accurate?
  • Assuming that's just an error, were the ailerons really not at all turning either aircraft? At the time of the collision, they were all at zero degrees, indicating that the pilots were not at all attempting to guide either aircraft in any kind of turn or dive or climb?
  • The artist labeled both aircraft as being N950JW. An obvious error.
  • Was the rudder on both aircraft really straight?
A reader looking at this illustration would reach the conclusion that both pilots were mindlessly flying the aircraft straight with no attempt at avoidance, and that both aircraft were at exactly level flight (though somehow one wing is hitting the underside of the other aircraft's wing, an impossibility if both aircraft are in exactly level flight). It reflects badly on the pilots, for one thing.
I mean, this illustration is bad — so bad that I would barely put it in Wikipedia with a caption merely stating that it's an artist's depiction of the impact point. It's certainly not a good depiction of the whole accident. It can't be. We don't have a complete picture, this illustrator does not, and it's not legitimate to say that the illustrator drew the accident from the data that has been reported. What results is inevitably a very incomplete version of what really happened, which is why it's important in every single case to include the disclaimer that this is one artist's interpretation of events.
Sorry if you're already on board with this and I'm preaching to the choir about the "artist's depiction" captions; our brief interaction hasn't given me the opportunity to understand any nuances of your position. Thanks - Tempshill (talk) 22:23, 22 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Wawa anyone?

File:Wawa Red Roof.JPG - this is the old building on their "HQ campus." There's an official entrance in an attached modern building that I have a picture of, but it is ugly. More interesting nearby are the Corporate University, and the old (1920s?) Wawa Dairy processing building (from whence it came). Let me know if you want anything more. Smallbones (talk) 05:23, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are now 3 more pix in the Wawa category at commons. I'll probably be able to get to the Acme HQ in Malvern within a month, but the other PA HQs will just be hit and miss - if for some reason I'm driving in the area, I'll get them. Too bad they don't put HQs in cities anymore! BTW File:Franklin Mint Museum.JPG (next to Wawa U) might be of some interest.
All the best.

True Grit

Hi,

Apologies for the brusque deletion - no offense intended. My concern is that going with your suggestions would result in something like the following:

"Ruth Morris, a 29 year old social worker and student from the University of Texas School of Public Health, served as a body double for Elizabeth Marvel (who played the adult Mattie in the last three minutes of the film). Morris had more screen time than Marvel."

Which seems a little trivial compared to the original statement. I certainly won't revert an edit to that effect, but it seems to draw rather a lot of attention to a very small point. Arthur Holland (talk) 21:01, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again,
There are a number of problems with this paragraph, in terms of style, content and grammar, so I'm going to rewrite it.
Personally I still feel that this fact is little more than a "trivia shot" at the end of the "Adaptation and production" section; however, I've no desire to get into a row over it so I'll make my changes and leave it at that. Arthur Holland (talk) 12:29, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, my best friend ...

Currently I'm blocked in Wikipedia Bahasa Indonesia for 3 days and was using an account from Wikipedia Bahasa Melayu. So would I devote my disappointment to you because in my opinion, I do not do acts of vandalism, but blocking penalties.

I just wanted to ask, whether in "English Wikipedia" a user who contributes a short article in the form of pilot could be liable to temporary blocking, because that's my account is blocked there. While the Malays seem to contribute longer articles that I make enough to get a positive response.

Please your answer in Malay or English only. Thank you. Wagino 20100516 (talk) 01:50, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Your photo requests for Halifax

I finally went out and took the photos you requested today, however, the weather was deteriorating badly, so the lighting is rather gray (the blizzard started about an hour later). I'm not sure where you want the photos in the articles, so I'll give you their names and you can insert them somewhere appropriate. The one for Air Canada Jazz is called Jazz_Office_CYHZ.JPG, the Canjet one is called Canjet_Office_CYHZ.JPG, and the Maritime Air Charter one is called MAC_hangar_CYHZ.JPG. Unfortunately, when I uploaded the Canjet pic, I used the description that says that I created it myself, but totally forgot to check the licencing checkbox. I don't know if there's some way to set it to the recommended licence option now or not, or if it defaults to that, but in any case, that had been my original intention. If I feel inspired in the summer, maybe I can get one with a blue sky and no dirty snowbanks! Cheers HiFlyChick (talk) 01:52, 1 March 2011 (UTC) [reply]

Wal-Mart

About your edit from a month ago... WP:EL does not say "Only one link to an official site"

It simply says "Links in the "External links" section should be kept to a minimum. A lack of external links or a small number of external links is not a reason to add external links." - What constitutes a "minumum" is an editorial decision that editors of a page determine on a page by page basis.

In any case, the official site template now has a "mobile" parameter so the mobile version appears in parentheses, consolidating official site links. WhisperToMe (talk) 03:46, 2 March 2011 (UTC)

It is widely accepted on Wikipedia that external links in an article are limited to one per website. Otherwise, there could a link to WM corporate, WM Home and Garden, WM Pharmacy, WM Toys, etc. etc. etc.
official site template now has a "mobile" parameter: Huh????
What constitutes a "minumum" is an editorial decision that editors of a page determine on a page by page basis: Perhaps, so that requires you (by WP:BURDEN) to seek and achieve a clear consensus at Talk:Wal-Mart before adding more than one link per website. Cresix (talk) 18:02, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just noticed I didn't put a header on this section. Sorry, I think it confused me more than it did you.
May I see a link to a discussion that establishes this on a Wikipedia-wide basis?: Perhaps I didn't state it clearly. I didn't mean to imply that there's a policy or even a guideline (other than what's already in WP:EL. In my observations, it is unusual to have a link to the same website more than once in EL. I have no doubt it happens, but I've seen that often result in removal because it gives the impression of promoting the website (or what they sell).
This one certainly is not worth climbing the Reichstag over. If I'm wrong and having more than one link at Wal-Mart doesn't invite needless stuffing of ELs into that or other articles, wonderful; we don't have a problem. If I happen to be right, I'll be sure to contact you to do the cleanup. :) Have a great day! Cresix (talk) 22:33, 2 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mind popping into the article to see anything's wrong with it; it's close to the FA-status. Also, I can't seem to figure out an alt text for the carbon brake picture. Thanks Sp33dyphil (TC • I love Wikipedia!) 06:45, 3 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Pan Am destinations.

A contributer named Juancho seems to be concerned that someone has changed the format displaying countries and cities. Someone changed the "before closure" section, while the "at closure" section retains the old format. If you get a chance, have a look and see if you think there's a problem.

Hi WhisperToMe:

I am working on trying to promote Oaxaca GA status. If you have time, would you mind giving it a quick once-over to see if any problems pop out to you? Its a work in progress, but "unfamiliar eyes" often see issues that those working on articles do not.

When I first got my driver's license here the only thing they required was my name, address, blood type and name/number of "next of kin". No exams. No proof of identity needed whatsoever. They didnt even want to see my passport or visa. They took my photo and a thumb print and a 345 peso "processing fee", and that was it. If you offered to pay a $1000 peso "gratuity" you got bumped to the front of the line...mind you the line ran more than four blocks down the street from the Transito office. Maybe things are different in other Mex. states...but...things just work weird here in Oax... City of Bellaire Edits

Hi. Thanks for letting me know that you reviewed the references given in the article. After reading your note I realized that I was not clear on why I put the citation needed tags on the information when I should have been more clear. The first tag I placed because Teas Nursery was owned by a group of private stockholders who kept their meetings private. It is unlikely that any article writer could know what all of the "owners" wished for. Because the link was dead, I was unable to verify any of the information in the statement regarding the "owners" wishes for the land. From what I know of the matter, the statement is inaccurate and does not reflect all of the wishes of all of the owners. Since the reference for this claim is no longer accessible, I have changed it to read simply that the company fought the city's attempt which is information which can be verified and does not make any claims of what any person did or did not feel. In the second case, I did not realize that the reference in question was for both the statements made. I clarified the statement to reflect which party intended housing development on the property. Since the stockholders chose to do something different with the property than what was stated in the article, "whom" intended for housing development to happen need to be clarified. Again, thanks for your attention to this article. Dragon of wiki (talk) 20:46, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

United Transport Administration

Hi WhisperToMe. Got a quick question for you on the article United Transport Administration you created. The article says it is the child agency of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development referring to proper sources. However, this information from the website of the Parliament of Georgia contradicts that information. It says Gia Khuroshvili stated that during two months, in parallel regime of setting up the Ministry, Staff of State Ministry in Regional Management Issues will be liquidated and the reorganization will be implemented in the Ministry of Economical Development. United Transport Administration and Department of Roads will move to the staff of the new Ministry, in my understanding referring to the newly established Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure. So, where exactly is the United Transport Administration? In the Ministry of Economy and Development or the Ministry for Regional Development and Infrastructure? If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Administaff requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia.

Alexf(talk) 20:28, 8 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Arcadia Park, Dallas, Texas has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The subject of this article does not appear to meet the general notability guideline. I am unable to find significant coverage of this 'neighborhood within a neighborhood' in third party sources.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Onthegogo (talk) 05:02, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rabbi Pinto - Assistance

Notice you are very active - Would you mind reviewing Rabbi Pinto page ? A major feature story ran on Rabbi Pinto, the largest story ever written about him and the few editors who control the board didnt allow neutral entrees to be placed. Need assistance from curious non interested parties.

The article was syndicated and picked up by Globes a major Israeli paper, The Real Deal a major NYC real estate publication and Vos Iz Neas Religious news service but entire chunks of article werent included. Can we have new eyes please ?

Would suggest adding: "Considerable questions have risen regarding Pinto’s organizations finances. A report by a leading New York Jewish newspaper has revealed a “contrast between the rabbi’s lifestyle and his reputation for modest living, and questions about the rabbi’s image as a business guru when his own not-for-profit faces financial problems.” The Forward stated: “The business troubles at Mosdot Shuva Israel could be seen as ironic, given Rabbi Pinto’s reputation as an adviser to businessmen, and particularly to real estate brokers.” 65.112.21.194 (talk) 13:33, 26 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A lot of it is based upon the class of individual speaking. Just like in English, where you have more formal dialects used by the upper class and "East Coast". The "gold standard" in Mexican Spanish is that which is spoken in and around DF (by "Chilangos")...that said, I live in the poorest state in Mexico (Think of the stereotype of Mississippi, only...much poorer) where 30% of the population doesn't even know Spanish, so everything is relative. Spanish in the US, generally speaking, suffers from severe language corruption...Anyhow I'll speak to someone and get you a more definitive answer. -- nsaum75 !Dígame¡ 03:28, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
They're viewed as a mouthpiece for Spain from what I understand...and also advocate the re-adoption of Vosotros/Vos... There's also a battle to stop the loss of the formal "Usted" -- which has been losing ground in Northern Mexico, the US and by younger people in general. Fortunately I think that they realize that Spanish has to adapt and change in order to become a global "business" language. Ironically they have done a lot of research into what has made French, which was one of the languages of Diplomacy, fall from "grace". -- nsaum75 !Dígame¡ 03:41, 1 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Humboldt Park

Well, it's somewhat difficult to determine what schools are in Humboldt Park without a good map of the neighborhood and some time to kill. The neighborhood's official boundaries are irregularly shaped, and don't always correspond to the public perception of what the neighborhood is. (Depending on whom you ask, the park itself isn't technically part of Humboldt Park.)

I guess, at the time, I just didn't want to put the effort into sorting things out. I knew some schools definitely weren't in Humboldt Park by any definition - St. Patrick's High School, for example. And seeing that, I figured it would be better to start from scratch. However, I did find this map, which might be useful. Zagalejo^^^ 19:57, 14 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Just to let you know that we have several hundred horse breed articles and about two thousand WikiProject Equine articles, all of which have a template with the relevant portals on the talk page. We really don't need a mishmash of portals duplicated randomly on some but not all article pages, so unless you'd like to personally add them to at least all 350 horse breed articles, would you kindly just not add them at all? Or, if you think this IS something we need to do, can you please bring it to WP:EQUINE so we can discuss how to accomplish this massive task? Thanks!!!! Montanabw(talk) 17:55, 26 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This discussion came across my watchlist a little too late to participate. Hence, I'll offer my comments now. When I originally came across the article, I had the slight impression that it was geared too much towards the plane crash. There was a text comment left to the effect of "Don't add a birth date unless sourced," like it was going to be difficult or something. I suppose if you're 100% reliant upon Google to the point where it blinds you to the existence of other sources, there may be a problem. It should be obvious that with a Google search, the results are going to be skewed more towards corporate media sensationalism if the opportunity presents itself.

In a sense, it's a good thing to see the photo go away, and also to see effort put into finding a replacement. Now, addressing the rationale:

  • Point 3: Thompson had two other daughters, who far as I know, still survive. Being an Alaska Native, he has an abundance of relatives in numerous communities throughout interior Alaska.
  • Points 4 and 5: Is it really important to have a photo of Thompson as an older man? Like I alluded to earlier, this perhaps is giving undue weight to the plane crash versus any other aspect of his life. Where I come from, Morris Thompson is known for a whole lot more than having died in a plane crash, and Athabascan people (as well as others from around here) may become very offended if they realize that's what the case is or may be. It may possibly stand in the way of someone granting permission for a photo to be used on here.

Several months back, I did send an e-mail to the BIA asking if an official photo was available. I never received a response. From my so-far-limited experience in making inquiries, people in positions of receiving such requests typically automatically turn their noses up at the first mention of "Wikipedia." Anyway, happy hunting.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:21, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

His surviving daughters are named Nicole and Allison. They probably go by married names. I'd have to do further research on specifically how to contact them. As for other contacts, I can't specifically recall that I've ever heard of a "Morris Thompson Foundation," but at the same time wouldn't say that it doesn't exist. The Doyon Foundation, the Fairbanks Native Association (605 Hughes Avenue, Fairbanks, AK 99701), the Tanana Chiefs Conference, the Alaska Federation of Natives or the Board of Regents secretary for the University of Alaska System (910 Yukon Drive, Fairbanks, AK 99775) would all be possible places to ask.RadioKAOS (talk) 05:38, 27 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
But wait, there's more! Since your name came across my watchlist just now, thought I'd let you know that I visited the Morris Thompson Center recently for the first time since it opened. I mentioned your quest to staffers, who indicated they were interested but wished to perhaps hear more from you. Mainly, trying to explain "free versus non-free content" to the uninitiated is about four rungs on the ladder below banging my skull against a wall until it splits open. Persian

hey dude,
if you can't speak Persian fluently, please DO NOT create pages such as بحث:LAUSD. thanks Razghandi (talk) 04:59, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This rationale is not valid; the direct in question, "LAUSD" was an acronym of the English name "Los Angeles Unified School District" WhisperToMe (talk) 05:08, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In Persian,if we want to mention LAUSD (and other US acronyms) we translate them into persian and write (ال‌ای‌یو‌اس‌دی‌) NOT LAUSD. Because our alphabet is completely different than yours (It is similar to Arabic) and lots of people can't read LAUSD but can read ال‌ای‌یو‌اس‌دی‌. if you create a page like ال‌ای‌یو‌اس‌دی and redirect it to اتحادیه مدارس لس‌آنجلس, nobody asks you why you did that. what you said is completely true but just for languages that use Latin Alphabet. thanks Razghandi (talk) 05:17, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I downloaded the handbook and I saw LAUSD in it. but remember that this handbook is just for Iranian who live in US, not all of Iranians. We are talking about more than 100 million persian speaker that lots of them even cant read or write English alphabet (ignoring the fact that the handbook has lots of errors in persian translation). I saw your messages in my Persian and English userpage and you must consider the fact that I'm not a native speaker of English and it takes a little more time to answer you. so wait and be patient. thanks anyway Razghandi (talk) 05:31, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok no problem, I neutralized my edits in that page, but you had done a mistake: you had redirected the disscution page to article, I fixed it. the persian acronym also redirects to the main article, so now both english and persian acronyms redirect to main article. and I'm translating Death Valley National Park article (a featured article) into Persian. I'll be so glad if you have a look at that. thanks Razghandi (talk) 06:04, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Chop suey

Thanks for your note. It doesn't surprise me that "Genuine American Chop Suey" would be exotic in Shanghai. About as surprising as seeing "Genuine American Pizza" in, say, Berlin or London (about as far from Naples as Shanghai is from Taishan). That doesn't tell us anything about the ultimate origins of the dish, especially since the recipe must have changed quite a bit between Taishan and the U.S. (just as Chicago pizza is very different from Naples pizza). What's more, I don't generally find that cookbooks are particularly good sources on culinary history. All that being said, there is no guarantee that the Taishan origin story won't be revised or overturned by additional historical research. But so far I haven't seen any strong sources disputing it. --Macrakis (talk) 13:46, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Question

About Incarceration of women... Who said the quote "“Women menstruate. They get pregnant. They stress over losing their children to Child Protective Services…women’s jails and prisons have always been based on physical structures and regulations originally designed for male bodies, and in response to the way men are expected to behave behind bars”" Was it the author of the book, or another person quoted in the book? WhisperToMe (talk) 22:58, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This was not my writing, I just moved User:DancingDolphin3 post from Incarceration in the United States article into this new article. If you want to delete the citation, it is fine with me. I also think it is a strong language. Innab (talk) 23:07, 29 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Official language of the Sahrawi republic

On the Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic a recurring issue going back over years is that some editors insist on including Spanish in the info box. This would be fine if Spanish was an official language but it is not: Constitution - Article 4:La langue arabe est la langue nationale officielle.[Trans: The Arab language is the national official language (no Spanish!)]. I am dropping you a note here because you previously edited this article and not many people are bothered with it so perhaps you could participate and help put down these attempts to include inaccurate information...Thanks. 109.76.199.226 (talk) 09:03, 2 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am in agreement on including this as well. I re-included it while removing the second half of the original content, which was a bit more gossip-y in tone. Take a look and see what you think. It's possible that cutting the second half makes the first half less interesting. And, for what it's worth, I agree with including the whole thing, just trying to find the middle ground :). ɠǀɳ̩ςεΝɡbomb 22:23, 10 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Montreal Convention

In a recent issue of the American Society for International Law it does indeed say that the Montreal Convention has been replaced by the Beijing Convention, it even says so in the versy first paragraph: http://www.asil.org/insights110126.cfm

However, so far there is no Article on that new convention. I have created a disambiguation page for the moment. Sorry to say this, but I think it a bit clumsy to remove mention of the Beijing Convention from the Montreal Convention page altogether, without at least moving it further down or putting it under "see also". Research would have shown that, in fact, there is a new convention. Not being an expert myself, it is possible that both remain in force, though the ASIL article does not seem to support that compromise. --Lhoaxt (talk) 16:04, 11 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, I mean the software category for articles that I created. For example Photo Magician Utility manifold, but perhaps we can make even more specific categories, such as a Photo Utility. How counterpart if the English Wikipedia?

Re: your question regarding Partnair

G'day from Oz; you have been going back into the dim dark past haven't you. I refuse to watch Mayday, so I didn't know whether that was literally what was said on the episode or not. If it is a literal statement from the program, then it was incorrect; I am aware that there have been fatal aircraft accidents due to bogus parts (which is the term generally used, as least as far as I have seen), and that people have been imprisoned as a result. Bogus parts was a huge issue within the aviation industry during the 1990s, and remains an issue today. Whether there have been other airliner accidents as a result of bogus parts is impossible for me to say either way at the moment, without looking through my collection of industry journals etc., which are nowhere near where I am right now. YSSYguy (talk) 07:11, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I just Googled "bogus parts air crash" and there's loads of stuff. It's midnight in my part of the world and I'm going to go to sleep now; happy reading (or maybe not - you might get a bit worried about the state of the world's aircraft). YSSYguy (talk) 14:11, 26 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Haden Harrison Edwards

Please have a look at Haden Harrison Edwards. There seems to be some confusion between Haden Edwards, the actual Empresario under Mexican Texas, and his son Haden Harrison Edwards who led the Fredonian Rebellion. See 2007 Talk page message by User:Bellhalla, who no longer seems to be active. I believe Bellhalla was correct in that the article is mis-named, and should actually be Haden Edwards, not Haden Harrison Edwards. Why she never moved it, I don't know. There is also a redirect to this page from the name Haden Edwards that dates back to 2006. Any action taken on this situation probably should be done by an Administrator. But I do believe the page name should be corrected, and the entire unsourced section about Mexican Response, and the unsourced paragraph right above it should be removed, as it might be referring to the son Haden Harrison Edwards. Please let me know. -Maile66 (talk) 17:51, 6 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Turkish Airlines Flight 981

About Turkish Airlines Flight 981 (Türk Hava Yolları'nın 981 sefer sayılı uçuşu), I have the French version of the final report linked. Should I link the English version too? The French version should be linked no matter what since it is the version of record (if there is a difference between the French and English, the French wins) - BUT I would imagine more Turkish Wikipedia readers understand English, so they would benefit from seeing the English report

To my knowledge there is no Turkish version available. I could check to see if Turkish authorities have a translated copy... WhisperToMe 01:07, 11 Haziran 2011 (UTC)

Thank you for linking the both versions. Although the French one is the original, the translation has been made by the official authorities so it counts as the official report as well. And I think there are more Turkish Wikipedia readers who understands English than French. --Mskyrider (talk) 11:15, 12 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]
