Pune Warriors India is a franchise cricket team that plays in the Indian Premier League (IPL) representing the city of Pune, Maharashtra. The team is one of two new franchisees added to the Indian Premier League (IPL) for the 2011 season, alongside the Kochi Tuskers Kerala. On 21 March 2010, Sahara Adventure Sports Limited made the winning bid of $370 million (approximately Rs 1700 crore) for the Pune franchise. The bid is the highest bid by any company in the short history of IPL.[1]
Franchise History
During the 2010 franchise auction for two new Indian Premier League teams, Subrata Roy of Sahara Group purchased the Pune IPL team. Pune and Kochi joined the current eight teams from the fourth season of IPL to be held in 2011. On March 22, 2010 Sahara group bought Pune IPL team for ₹1,702 crore. The Videocon Group lost the bid for the Pune IPL Team.
Club Logo & Colours
The team logo has a spear wielding warrior riding a stallion, with the team's name next to it.[2] The team colour is black. They kept their name Sahara Pune Warriors but later changed it to Pune Warriors India . TVS Motors is the principal sponsor for the Pune Warriors India who have also signed Adidas as their official apparel sponsor for the upcoming season of IPL 2011.The other sponsors include Royal Challenge, Pepsi, Playup(mobile gaming partner), Amity University, Finolex, Valvoline.
For the 4th season of IPL Pune Warriors India played their home matches at the DY Patil Stadium ground located at Navi Mumbai as the MCA Stadium was still under Construction.
2011 Season
The Warriors have signed a number of top international cricketers including Yuvraj Singh, Robin Uthappa, Jesse Ryder, Angelo Mathews, Murali Kartik, Ashish Nehra, Graeme Smith etc. Also a number of uncapped Indian players who had played for various franchises before were roped in including Abhishek Jhunjhunwala, Mithun Manhas, Mohnish Mishra Ganesh Gaikwad, Kamran Khan.Yuvraj Singh was nominated the captain of the team ahead of the 2011 Indian Premier League.[3] The Warriors got off to a successful start in the 2011 Indian Premier League by defeating Kings XI Punjab and Kochi Tuskers Kerala at home. On 3 May 2011, the Pune Warriors selected Sourav Ganguly to play for them as a replacement for the injured Ashish Nehra.
IPL Withdrawal
Sahara withdrew Pune Warriors India from the IPL just hours before the 2012 IPL auction was about to start, providing a major blow to BCCI. However, the IPL is scheduled to continue. [4] On February 6, 2012 Pune Warriors India owner Subrata Roy said that Sourav Ganguly will take a call on reconciliation. [5]. On February 13, 2012 BCCI announced that they have allowed Yuvraj Singh's replcement for Pune Warriors India for 2012 IPL though deadlock still persists between the two parties on long term sponsorship.[6] On February 16, 2012 BCCI-Sahara ended their differences and announced that Pune Warriors India will play in IPL 5.[7]
There was a joint press conference of Sahara India and the BCCI on 16 February, 2012. The BCCI agreed to give Sahara a total purse of $3.4 million, $1.6 million from the money that they had for the auction and $1.8 million as compensation due to the absence of Yuvraj Singh. It was decided that Pune could replace Yuvraj with one player, whose fees would be upto $1.8 million. IPL's trading window was also extended upto Feb 29, 2012 to allow Pune Warriors India to purchase players. Pune was also allowed the compensation of playing 5 foreign players in the squad, subject to the consent of the other 8 franchises. BCCI also agreed to allow Sahara to have a strategic partner in the franchise. Pune's new stadium would also be allowed to host one of the play off matches, provided Royal Challengers Bangalore give consent, because according to a BCCI rule, the right to host the play off matches is given to the finalist of the previous edition. (RCB were the finalist of the 2011 IPL). All this was done to reduce the losses suffered by Sahara in IPL 2011). I[8]
