Re: Guest reviewer!

Greetings Tito! My apologies are in order for this delayed reply. As you can see, I did indeed begin to review the Independence Day (India) article, but before I had a chance to finish reading through, I got called away on an unexpected family emergency. Sadly, I just learned that I've lost someone very dear to my heart :(. Though my wiki participation, availability, and concentration may be a bit disrupted over the next few days, I wanted to take a moment to acknowledge your recent messages and thank you for your kind words and proposed ideas. Full detailed replies are in the making, but I wanted to let you know that there may be some delays and periods of silence before I'm able to fully address everything your messages entail. I will start with the completion of my review, and respond to the rest as soon as possible. Have yourself a great day Tito... I'll catch up with you soon. :)  -- WikHead (talk) 19:03, 27 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE mid-drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive mid-drive newsletter

  • Participation: Out of 37 people signed up for this drive so far, 19 have copy-edited at least one article, about the same as the last drive. If you've signed up but haven't yet copy-edited any articles, every bit helps; if you haven't signed up yet, it's not too late. Template:J
  • Progress report: We're almost on track to meet our targets for the drive. Great work, guys. We have reduced our target group of articles—August, September, and October 2011—by about 44%, and the overall backlog has been reduced by 58 articles so far, to around 2600 articles. The biggest difference between this drive and the previous one is a stronger focus on large articles, so total word counts are still comparable.
  • Don't forget about the Copy Edit of the Month contests! Voting for the August contest has been extended through the end of the month. You don't have to make a submission to vote!

Welcome to the Wikipedia Ambassador Program

Hi Tito Dutta!

Congratulations! Your application to join the Wikipedia Education Program as an Online Ambassador has been accepted. We are honored to welcome you the Ambassador team.

The information below is provided to ensure that your new role as an Online Ambassador is a successful one. There are tasks listed, as well as reading material. Please make sure to complete the actions presented below, as quickly as possible.

The Wikipedia Education Program is a relatively new program that is continuing to experience change and transition. Our goal is to be better than we were yesterday. For this reason, please remember to check the information and talk pages of the United States Education Program and the Wikipedia Ambassador Program often. If you have any questions, please contact myself or one of your fellow Ambassadors.

Please complete the following, as soon as possible
  1. Add your username to the official list of Online Ambassadors;
  2. Add a profile for yourself here; and
  3. Read and review the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles;
  4. Read the United States Education Program's Memorandum of Understanding (provides list of current courses); and
  5. Choose courses from the active lists (United States, Canada) and add yourself to the template and course page of the course you wish to assist.
  6. Sign up for the Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements email list.

Support Structure

Online Ambassadors serve as a vital link in the Wikipedia Education Program, assisting new student editors transition into the Wikipedia editing community. They serve in a leadership role alongside the course instructor; local Campus Ambassador(s), who work with the class in person; and the Regional Ambassador, who checks in periodically with the pod to make sure everything is going well. Together, the instructor, Campus Ambassador, Regional Ambassador, and Online Ambassador encompass the course "pod".

The pod is the term we use to refer to the group of individuals that work together to help the students in a particular course successfully contribute to Wikipedia. A prototypical pod might look something like this:

  • A professor or course instructor who is fairly new to Wikipedia, leading a class of 20–30 students, who have been assigned to make significant contributions to new or existing articles related to the course subject.
  • Two Campus Ambassadors, one of whom is an experienced Wikipedian and one of whom is new to the encyclopedia. The Campus Ambassadors are provided with training to learn the basic policies and guidelines of Wikipedia and how to help students contribute effectively.
  • Two Online Ambassadors, one of whom is a moderately experienced Wikipedian, while the other is very experienced. Both have knowledge of community policies and guidelines and are available to provide editing guidance, answer questions, and assistance navigating the community. When needed, Online Ambassadors are also available for one-on-one mentorship.
  • One Regional Ambassador, a moderately experienced Wikipedian who coordinates assistance and support for universities and courses based on a large geographical region.

Role and Responsibilities

The list of the responsibilities of the Online Ambassador are presented in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). In essence, the role of the Online Ambassador includes:

  1. Helping students in your class(es) when they ask for it and answer their questions;
  2. Serve as a liaison between the professor/student and the community;
  3. In general, keep an eye out for the students and professors and help them navigate the community;
  4. Helping students get feedback on their work (whether from you or other editors with an interest in or knowledge of the subject area)
  5. Be a good example for students, modeling good faith communication and editing practices; and
  6. Communicating regularly with the other members of your pod regarding the progress of the student, along with any issues that come up.

Online Ambassadors can also assist students that are outside of their pod. Generally, Online Ambassadors represent the Ambassador Program and provide assistance for students whenever encountered. While feedback on the style and formatting of student articles is essential, assistance may also be needed to review the articles substance and content. When needed, the Online Ambassador may request the assistance of WikiProjects that focus on technical issues presented in student articles.

Communication Channels

There are five main places for news, updates, and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Wikipedia Education Program:

  1. Wikipedia talk:Ambassadors
  2. Wikipedia:Education noticeboard
  3. Wikipedia talk:United States Education Program
  4. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements list. This is a low-traffic email list that is used for significant announcements that are relevant to the whole program. Please sign up as soon as you get a chance.
  5. Internet Relay Chat (IRC). If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors and #wikipedia-en-classroom to your channel lineup. The latter is the main help channel for the program, where students and instructors seek live help.

Future communication tools are being developed. Newsletters about the program or messages for Online Ambassadors may occasionally be delivered to your talk page. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Again, welcome to the Ambassador team! We look forward to working with you! The Interior (Talk) 06:29, 18 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Titodutta. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved as an adopter with Wikipedia's Adopt-a-user program. A clean-up of this program is currently underway, and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is and isn't still interested in remaining an adopter.

If you would prefer not to be part of the adoption program anymore, you need do nothing; when the overhaul of the project is completed your name will be removed from the list of active adopters. However, if you have current adoptees, an active adoption school or an interest in adopting in the near future, then please let us know by signing here.

If you want to remain in the project and can currently take on more adoptees, there is a serious backlog at Category:Wikipedians seeking to be adopted in Adopt-a-user; it would be enormously helpful if you could take on one or two of the users there. Please do keep an eye on the project for upcoming changes, we could use your opinions and your help! Yunshui  09:23, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Titodutta, thanks so much for offering some of these backlogged editors adoption! If you don't mind, could you also make sure you change their {{adopt me}} template to an {{adopt offer}}? WormTT(talk) 10:48, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Splendid; I'll add you to the list. Yunshui  11:55, 19 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Titodutta. Thanks for agreeing to stay on at Adopt-a-user. I've recently updated the list of adopters and I have included you, per your original comments on that page and your comments at User:Yunshui/Overhaul/Adopters staying on. You can see your new profile at the list of adopters. Why not update your profile with an image and maybe have another look at your description? You can also include a list of any adoptees you currently have. If you are also willing to mentor problematic users, possibly as part of a conditional unblock, please include "mentorship=yes" in your profile. Thanks again for all your help. I do not have enough time now, nor I am fully back! --Tito Dutta 03:32, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
My sanity has never come back. If I remember right, you are taking a break for school? How school going? Bgwhite (talk) 05:01, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I am 24 years 10 months old (dob November 13 1987), left school a long time ago. Started preparing for a Government job (after doing and getting tired some private and part time jobs). The job is called WBCS– ( i.e. West Bengali Civil Service)– It needs a lo(ooo)ng preparation. The job is Government's administrative works. The exam runs for one year with three stages a) preliminary b) main (9 papers) and finally c) interview. Very very tough to get in after facing year long tests. The maximum age limit to sit for the examination is 32. So, I have some time still. I am planning to give it a try in next 1–2/3 year(s). --Tito Dutta 08:06, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Egads. I looked at West Bengal Civil Service (article needs alot of work) and a few websites. I never would have imaged such longs test that are so involved to apply for a government job. That is amazing. I have trouble speaking one language, little alone having to translate multiple languages. What kind of government jobs is this for? Why such a long and involved test? Bgwhite (talk) 08:27, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is one of the best jobs of the country with lots of reputation and power (really), best one is IAS (Indian Administrative Service) which is country's Administrative works and WBCS is state's administrative work (right after IAS). I think, any dedicated Wikipedia editor will feel attracted towards the work of a civil service officer, where you'll be appointed as BDO (Block Development Officer) if you are selected. A block is an area/municipality/part of town with 50,000 or more people where you are the highest rank officer. Interesting? There are two alarming issues
  • Almost 200,000 people will sit or this exams, but only few hundred will be selected (as the article says, the exam is extremely challenging)
  • Politicians (I mean ministers etc) are still much higher than these officers), while actually these IAS WBCS officers help politicians to run ministry. Someone has created a blog on WBCS. Of course not an RS for Wikipedia, but helpful for WBCS studies. And finally there is a (bad?) joke– it takes one month to understand only the syllabus of WBCS/IAS! :)
Frankly speaking, currently getting a good/high level Government job is a dream of most of the Indians (specially for people like me with average qualification). Good salary. More holidays than private sectors, medical (health) and some other privileges. The best part is almost 100% job guarantee/ security. That means you'll not loose your job for any economic instability, international economic crash etc etc. Few years back US, Europe etc faced economic crisis that had its effect in India too. Many many private sector workers lost jobs. But, Government workers were safe and sound then too. That's very assuring thing for many people (also for me)– job security. I have wasted last two–three years doing some bogus works, but I am back to concentrating on some Government jobs now (though it is very very tough). --Tito Dutta 09:05, 22 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the congrats on the 200,000 (sortof) edits. It is not that big of a deal as most are with the use of AWB. But, it is still alot of long hours of work. While I can remember, the question you asked me via email a month ago. Yes, but not for another month or two.
I can see why people would want to take the tests. The past few years of recession in the U.S. has also hit jobs. Government jobs have felt the hit of job loss less than other areas, but jobs have been lost in the Government sector. Federal jobs are still good, but depending in which state you live in, state and local jobs could be worse than private jobs. My wife is a teacher. The state no longer offers retirement benefits and cut health insurance. She now teaches at a private school that has very good benefits and better pay. My neighbor and some family members work for city government and haven't felt any cuts.
I'm just still amazed at the competition for a civil service officer. I've been telling family members about what you are going thru to get the job and they are all amazed. I hope the very best for you. Bgwhite (talk) 05:22, 24 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CVUA

Hi Titodutta. I'm leaving you this message because you have previously been involved with Counter-Vandalism, and may still be. The Academy project has been restructured, placing responsibility for it on the trainers themselves and as part of the process I am trying to find out who is still interested in remaining as active trainers.

In future, there will be no clerking or coordination, so If you are still active and can respond to requests from students within around 48 hours, you need do nothing until a new student contacts you on your talk page. Nevertheless, if your status changes, please update your entry on the table of active trainers at the new WP:CVUA page. If you no longer have sufficient time to commit to the CV training project, that's fine, but please remove your name from the active list. While on your travels however, should you come across users who are having a hard time with their reverts, don't hesitate to send them a link to the CVUA. Thanks, and happy editing! Explanation of the word OM

Hi Titodutta, Recently, you have deleted an explanation of the word “Om”. I believe, this is against the rules of Wikipedia. You can’t delete such a beautiful authentic published work. You may not know the person - that does not mean, you have to delete the content. Wikipedia is not a personal property. I condemn your destructive mentality and narrow views.

--Nancy-Elx (talk) 03:15, 1 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE September 2012 drive wrap-up

Guild of Copy Editors September 2012 backlog elimination drive wrap-up

Participation: Out of 41 people who signed up this drive, 28 copy-edited at least one article. Thanks to all who participated! Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: We achieved our primary goal of clearing July, August, September and October 2011 from the backlog. This means that, for the first time since the drives began, the backlog is less than a year. At least 677 tagged articles were copy edited, although 365 new ones were added during the month. The total backlog at the end of the month was 2341 articles, down from 8323 when we started out over two years ago. We completed all 54 requests outstanding before September 2012 as well as eight of those made in September.

Copy Edit of the Month: Voting is now over for the August 2012 competition, and prizes will be issued soon. The September 2012 contest is closed for submissions and open for voting. The October 2012 contest is now open for submissions. Everyone is welcome to submit entries and to vote.

Hi! You asked about more details on the image of rice field in Tripura article in GA review. What kind of details? The photographer is currently active in wikipedia. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Bijon Bhattacharya, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Subarnarekha (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Signing

Your signing is affecting page layout. I'd say that is too much. -DePiep (talk) 21:40, 9 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, Where? In every page or any p[articular page? Do you suggest to decrease shadow (from 0.9 to 0.7 or 0.5 etc) or completely change the signature?--Tito Dutta 02:34, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For example Wikipedia:Vpt#.22Cite.22_link_is_not_appearing_in_edit_toolbar. It appears that it is enlarging the line height (interline whitespace), esp when used twice in two rows. Apart from this, more as a matter of graphic taste, I don't appreciate the color flowing into another line above or below. -DePiep (talk) 06:49, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The top of of the shadow is causing a bigger line break than normal with the line above your shadow. I hadn't noticed it until it was brought up, so it is not a big problem, but one that should be fixed. Bgwhite (talk) 06:50, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Greetings,
I can try to fix that, sample below (feel free to edit)–
Or I can try changing signature removing text shadow (it may take some time to prepare a new signature)

Test of the first one. This is a Test. Test of the first one. This is a Test.
Test of the first one. This is a TestTito Dutta
Test of the first one. This is a Test. Test of the first one. This is a Test.

There is just a slight increase in spacing in the first one. Still cut it down just a bit. The second is still has the line spacing. Bgwhite (talk) 07:17, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Just to show the effect in extremis (all 1em or 0em):

Now I do not see extra whitespace (interline). The shadow colors clearly overlap other lines. That raises the question: what setting (CSS code) actually does the line heightening in the current signature? (I do FF on WinXP). -DePiep (talk) 08:32, 10 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings, I have restored my signature to default (well, almost, just a space between name and surname). Tito Dutta (talk) 00:58, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. A pity you had to drop the whole, but I could not find the core problem. -DePiep (talk) 08:13, 14 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any difference without the sign?···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 20:43, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Does the one on the left seem larger? Nopes, it is an optical illusion, Delboeuf illusion
Confused! I can't see any difference! Clarify! --Tito Dutta (talk) 20:46, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think it was just an illusion, as putting a new line, a colon or a bullet/number is different from having an automatic line break due to wrapping. I have invited both DePiep and BgWhite to the discussion. Hope that this is just an illusion; if in doubt, one may check using a scale, the striking passing through the text will make it easy to take measurements  :) ···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 21:04, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Optical illusion? Interesting! --Tito Dutta (talk) 21:16, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Interestingly, the effect is gone on my screen too. I do not see it, nor can I measure a difference between test4 and test1 (below 4) line height. Also the first example, now in VPT archive 103, does not show the effect (any more). But optical illusion? Both me and Bgwhite saw it (noted here at 6:49 and 6:50), and Titodutta sort of went along (without stating explicitly he saw it). And really, today I do not see the effect, let alone I would write about it. So something else was there. More likely time solved the issue. Looks like the browser has caught the right interpretation of the CSS code. I'm not familiar with backgrounds, but could it be some wikipedia code change (done), or a cache thing?
And there is another reason Tittodutta can use the shadowed signature: a signature does not appear in content space (like articles). It only is at talk and wikipedia pages and so. These pages do not have to be styled correctly, there "anything goes". So with or without the effect gone away, TD can reinstate and use that sign as he likes. (First please check the second point I made in my 6:50 post here...). -DePiep (talk) 10:03, 24 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They have asked me to go to central requested move page (there process is little bit different, you don't request in talk, there is a separate page). But, about German I am slightly confused still because it is proper noun and they have all required letters in alphabet. I'll try searching in German Google Books if anyone is using the requested spelling. Thanks a lot. What do you think now?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 07:49, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

When you say the plot is totally different, keep in mind something like Bollywood Queen is included on {{Romeo and Juliet}}. It seems to me that these plots are thematically similar to the original. Why is Dev.D considered an adaptation in your eyes?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 13:56, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Devadasu, which is marketed in some markets under the title of Devdas was remade in Bengali as Paglu. As I understand it these movies all share the theme of Love vs. power and honor.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 22:22, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Do you think that the fact that it is difficult to find an English language citation that a Telugu movie dubbed in Malayalam was remade in Bengali means they are not thematically similar. Article space for these articles is not my turf. I think I'll leave it in the template. Do you contest that Paglu is a remake of Devadasu?--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 02:00, 21 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Your edit notice

I have no judgement on your edit notice, just impressions. I think it is perfectly fine to show this one in your own userspace. At first reading I found the notes lightheartedly but indeed for a new user they may be offsetting. Still not unfriendly or uninviting. The footnote on copying shows some disappointment, but remember that you are not responsible or other persons actions, and "stealing/copying" ideas is sort of basic in Wikipedia editing. All in all I see no reason to change it. The only reason to change it would be your own inspiration to do so. -DePiep (talk) 13:10, 19 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Titodutta, have you thought about standing for adminship? Your contributions are impressive, and I've certainly found your judgment to be sound in RMs. --BDD (talk) 18:01, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I have thought of it. I thought of not trying for adminship before end of 2013. Thanks for your kind opinion! What's about you? Are you an admin or planning to be one? --Tito Dutta (talk) 18:09, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'd like to be one, yes. I had been thinking of waiting until the start of 2013 until making an active attempt, but the more I see editors voicing concerns about an admin shortage, highlighted by no new admins being made last month, the more I think, "Hey, I can do this" and stepping up. But edit count is on the low side for an admin, so I'm probably better off waiting. --BDD (talk) 18:50, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If they make changes in admin procedure (as in here), adminship is easy to give and easy to take away etc, it'll be neither very difficult nor very exciting to get adminship then, IMO. --Tito Dutta (talk) 18:55, 23 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies, can't help out at the moment - it's just gone mid-night here, and I need my "beauty-sleep" before I bicycle off to work about 8 hours from now. (Yeah, I know, I get to chose whether to drive my car to work or ride my bicycle to work: a classical "First World Problem" and so on.) Will try my best to help after work tomorrow.
