Originally, these were two separate blocks, with the morning block called ''Disney Clubhouse'' and the afternoon block called ''Disney Club''. ''Disney Clubhouse'' and ''Disney Club'' merged and became a singular block under the ''Disney Club'' name, airing during the morning hours. Disney launched a completely new [[Disney Channel (Netherlands & Belgium)|Disney Channel]] via the [[UPC Netherlands]] analog and digital cable service on October 3, 2009. The channel broadcasts a range of Disney series dubbed in Dutch. Only after 9.10 p.m., series are broadcast with Dutch subtitles. Since November 2009, the channel also broadcast in [[Belgium]] with a Flemish voice who performs announcements on [[Telenet Digital TV]] (digital cable) and [[Belgacom TV]] (IPTV). Disney Channel was launched on [[Ziggo]]'s digital cable service on September 1, 2011; it was planned to launch on the [[Caiway]] digital cable service, but that did not occur.

The Dutch Jetix channel was rebranded as [[Disney XD (Netherlands & Flanders)|Disney XD]] on January 1, 2010. [[Disney Junior (Netherlands & Flanders)|Disney Junior]] is also available in the [[Netherlands]] and [[Flanders]].

In early 2012, Disney Channel began using the new Disney Channel logo, tune and promos adopted from Disney Channel U.S. and UK; the airtime of Dutch subtitles changed from 6 to 8 p.m. On August 16, 2012, Disney Channel was added to [[CanalDigitaal]] [[DVB-S]] TV on Astra 23.5 East, on channel 38 standard and on 66 scaled HD. In July 2013, the broadcast of subtitles on the channel moved from 8 to 9:30 p.m. with step of 9.10 p.m. and began ending at approximately 10:15 p.m. (after that, program content is again dubbed in Dutch).

In Italy, the channel launched on December 20, 1997 via Telepiù. On December 21, 2002, the channel launched Disney Channel +1 and Toon Disney +1, followed on February 1, 2003 by the launch of Playhouse Disney. In 2003, Italy passed on Sky initially as an option, then included the channel in its packages. On July 1, 2008, Disney Channel was added to the Mediaset Premium Gallery and later added in the package; on December 8, 2009, Playhouse Disney along with two other channels (Cartoon Network and Hiro), were added to the Premium Fantasy package. Disney Channel on Sky Italy has been enhanced with the timeshift service Toon Disney +1 on channel 614, and Disney in English (on Sky channels 615 and 618, respectively). The offer has been extended even further with the arrival of Disney XD that replaced the Jetix channel on September 28, 2009 (on Sky channel 616) and the channel Jetix +1 (channel 617). This was precisely replaced by timeshift channel Disney XD +1 on channel 616. Additionally, entries not yet formalized heralded the arrival of Disney Cinemagic (substitute for Toon Disney) in both standard (SD) in the version in high definition (HD).

On October 1, 2011, Disney Channel changed its logo and launched a +2 timeshift channel the same day, the first in the world, on Sky channel 615. On October 25, 2011, Disney Channel began broadcasting in [[16:9]] widescreen. On October 1, 2011, sister channel Disney XD launched a +2 timeshift channel on Sky channel 619, replacing Toon Disney. On February 1, 2012, Disney Channel Italy launched a HD simulcast channel, along with 12 additional Sky Channels.

Disney Channel originated in the United States on April 18, 1983, as a [[pay television|premium channel]]; initial programming included a mix of children's programs and films during the daytime hours and family-oriented movies, classic films and [[television special]]s at night. The channel first expanded to basic cable in 1991, when eight cable providers (the first being [[Jones Intercable]]'s systems in [[Fort Myers, Florida|Fort Myers]] and [[Broward County, Florida]]) volunteered to move the channel to their expanded basic cable packages; the channel's carriage on basic cable expanded over time until 2004, when the last cable providers to carry Disney Channel as a pay service moved them to basic tiers as part of a 1999 mandate that in which Disney required cable operators continuing to carry it as a premium service to move the channel to a basic cable tier or it would not renew carriage agreements with those providers.

[[Disney Channel Original Series|Original series]] and [[Disney Channel Original Movie|movies]] have become prominent on the flagship channel since the late 1990s, with series such as ''[[So Weird]]'', ''[[Even Stevens]]'', ''[[Lizzie McGuire]]'', ''[[That's So Raven]]'' and ''[[Hannah Montana]]'' along with current series such as ''[[Good Luck Charlie]]'', ''[[A.N.T. Farm]]'' and ''[[Jessie (TV series)|Jessie]]''. ''[[High School Musical 2]]'' holds the record for the highest-rated Disney Channel Original Movie, and the highest-rated scripted program in cable television history, when its August 2007 debut was watched by 17.2 million viewers (if briefly held the record for the single most-viewed a basic cable program, until an [[National Football League|NFL]] game between the [[New England Patriots]] and the [[Baltimore Ravens]] televised on corporate sibling [[ESPN]]'s ''[[Monday Night Football]]'', which was watched by 17.5 million viewers on December 3, 2007).

Disney Channel U.S. has spun off additional channels over time: the first of which was [[Toon Disney]], a [[digital cable]] and [[satellite television|satellite]] channel focusing on animated programming, that launched in April 1998. Toon Disney was replaced by [[Disney XD]] in February 2009; the channel aimed at boys 7 to 14 years of age features a mix of live-action comedy series and animated comedy and action series such as ''[[Kickin' It]]'', ''[[Lab Rats]]'' and ''[[Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja]]'', including some current and archived program content from Disney Channel. [[Disney Junior]], a preschool-targeted digital cable and satellite channel that was launched in March 2012 (which also serves as the branding for Disney Channel's morning block for that same demographic), features original and some acquired programming targeted at younger children including ''[[Mickey Mouse Clubhouse]]'', ''[[Doc McStuffins]]'' and ''[[Sofia the First]]''.

While Disney Channel does not exist as a branded channel in Canada in its own right, its programming has been distributed since 1988 on specialty channel [[Family Channel]] (owned by [[Bell Media]] through a [[blind trust]], until the channel is sold to another company to comply with conditions of Bell's purchase of Family's former owner [[Astral Media]]), which is licensed as [[pay television|premium service]] though is carried as a basic cable channel on some cable and satellite providers. As a result of the fact that the majority of Disney Channel U.S.'s programs air on Family, coupled with the fact that both channels developed similarly in their respective countries (as both began as premium services before adding availability via basic cable), Family Channel is commonly considered to be a ''de facto'' Canadian version of Disney Channel (though it is often mistakenly assumed to be related to [[ABC Family]], a sister network to Disney Channel U.S. which was formerly known as <u>The</u> Family Channel from 1988 to 1998; a Canadian version of ABC Family launched in March 2012, called [[ABC Spark]] to avoid confusion with Family Channel, to which it shares no common ownership).

Some Canadian-produced original series produced by Family (such as ''[[Life with Derek]]'', ''[[Naturally, Sadie]]'', and ''[[Overruled!]]'') have aired on Disney Channel in the United States and in other countries in the past. In addition to its program distribution agreement with Disney Channel U.S., Family also operates an English-language version of [[Disney Junior (Canadian English TV channel)|Disney Junior]] as a [[multiplex (TV)|multiplex channel]], as [[Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission|CRTC]] rules allow cable channels licensed as premium services to add multiplex channels consistent with the network's license. [[Disney XD (Canada)|Disney XD]] and a [[Disney Junior (Canadian French TV channel)|French-language version of Disney Junior]] are also owned by the Bell Media-held blind trust, operating under separate licenses.

In the 1990s, the Disney Channel launched in [[Latin America]] on [[DirecTV]] as a premium channel. Beginning in the 2000s, the channel became available to other cable providers. In 2003, because of the crisis in Argentina and Mexico, DirecTV removed the channel; the channel space was filled for a short period of time by [[Fox Kids]], Disney Channel returned to the satellite provider in 2004 as part of the basic tier, joining Fox Kids, which was previously exclusive to SKY. Programming featured on Disney Channel Latin America includes ''Zapping Zone''.

In the early 2000s, Disney Channel Brazil launched on DirecTV as a premium channel available only on weekends. Later around the same time, when [[Sky Brazil]] and [[Globosat]] bought the Brazilian [[Directv]], the channel became available to other cable providers and turned into a full-time channel. The channel has its own regular schedule, and is broadcasts in [[Portuguese language|Portuguese]].

The flagship U.S. [[Disney Channel]] is available to cable and satellite subscribers in [[Puerto Rico]], the [[Virgin Islands]], the [[Bahamas]], [[Haiti]], and all of the [[Caribbean]]. On January 1, 2007 as part of the network's 2007 re-brand campaign, the "Hip" brand name was dropped, and introduced its rectangular current logo along with cuadrilar new graphics. [[Red Bee Media]] transformed the channel into a modern-looking appearance and new promos started the week before. Idents started that next Sunday. Disney Channels Worldwide is a subsidiary of Disney Media Networks, a unit of the Disney-ABC Television Group division of The Walt Disney Company that operates various children's television channels around the world: Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Disney Cinemagic, and Hungama TV. In addition, the division is responsible for operating Radio Disney and Disney Television Animation.

Disney Channel was originally established in the United States in April 1983 as a premium cable channel, and has since converted to a basic service; in addition, Disney Channel's programming has expanded internationally with the launch of various country-specific and regional versions of the channel, as well as program licensing agreements reached with television networks not bearing the Disney Channel brand. This article primarily concentrates on the international channels, but also illustrates associated brand and program licensing agreements.

Disney Channel South Africa is available in Southern Africa. It was launched on December 1, 2000. The channel is available in South Africa, Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ghana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Swaziland, Tanzania, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

West Africa

Disney Channel Ghana and Nigeria is available in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cape Verde, Côte d'Ivoire, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo.

Japan

"Disney Channel (Japan)" (ディズニー・チャンネル) is the Japanese version of Disney Channel. It was launched in 1993 as the original Asian version of Disney Channel with live feeds from New York City and London since 1995, and was originally broadcast in Hong Kong, Malaysia, Mainland China and Taiwan until 1995, and The Philippines, Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand until 1996. In 2003, Disney Channel Asia ceased transmissions in Japan to make way for the Japanese version of the channel. On Disney Channel Japan, celebrities such as Miley Cyrus often make short, commercial messages to their Japanese fans. Disney Channel Japan also broadcasts American shows dubbed in Japanese, and anime.

In April 2009, the Walt Disney Co., Ltd. Japan started Broadcast Satellite Disney Co., Ltd. to broadcast a women and family targeted channel, Dlife, with licensed received in October 2010 and debuted on March 17, 2012.[2] In December 2013, Dlife launched a children's programming block called Disney Time. [3]

Malaysia

Philippines (TV5 channel)

In the Philippines, Disney Channel programming is available on TV5, in the form of a program block. Originally, these were two separate blocks, with the morning block called Disney Clubhouse and the afternoon block called Disney Club. Disney Clubhouse and Disney Club merged and became a singular block under the Disney Club name, airing during the morning hours. The block launched on December 13, 2010, only three programs featured in the block are dubbed in Filipino. The block runs Monday–Fridays at 7:30 a.m., Saturdays at 6 a.m., and Sundays at 7 a.m. Disney Channel programming is also available in the country through Disney Channel Asia.

South Korea

Disney Channel had formerly been available through Disney Channel Asia in Korea. Disney Channel Korea launched on April 11, 2011,[4] following an agreement between Korean company SK Telecom and The Walt Disney Company to form a joint venture for operating all future Disney-branded channels. SK owns a 51% majority stake in the new company.[5]

Taiwan

Disney Channel Taiwan was launched in late 1995 as a Chinese feed of Disney Channel UK. All programs on Disney Channel Taiwan are broadcast with Mandarin dubbing and/or subtitles, with the original audio available through Second Audio Program.

Thailand

Disney Channel in Thailand was formerly a program block on TV5 from December 2006 to March 2008, the block then moved to NBT from April to July 2008. From July 2008 to May 2010, Disney Channel programming was not available in Thailand, until it returned as a separate channel but available only on cable and satellite. From October 17th, Disney Channel Thailand will separate from the Asia channel

Vietnam

Disney Channel is available through Disney Channel Asia in Vietnam, with Vietnamese subtitles.

Middle East, North Africa and Pakistan

Europe

Netherlands & Flanders

Disney launched a completely new Disney Channel via the UPC Netherlands analog and digital cable service on October 3, 2009. The channel broadcasts a range of Disney series dubbed in Dutch. Only after 9.10 p.m., series are broadcast with Dutch subtitles. Since November 2009, the channel also broadcast in Belgium with a Flemish voice who performs announcements on Telenet Digital TV (digital cable) and Belgacom TV (IPTV). Disney Channel was launched on Ziggo's digital cable service on September 1, 2011; it was planned to launch on the Caiway digital cable service, but that did not occur.

The Dutch Jetix channel was rebranded as Disney XD on January 1, 2010. Disney Junior is also available in the Netherlands and Flanders.

In early 2012, Disney Channel began using the new Disney Channel logo, tune and promos adopted from Disney Channel U.S. and UK; the airtime of Dutch subtitles changed from 6 to 8 p.m. On August 16, 2012, Disney Channel was added to CanalDigitaal DVB-S TV on Astra 23.5 East, on channel 38 standard and on 66 scaled HD. In July 2013, the broadcast of subtitles on the channel moved from 8 to 9:30 p.m. with step of 9.10 p.m. and began ending at approximately 10:15 p.m. (after that, program content is again dubbed in Dutch). On Oktober 2013 Subtitled broadcasting is stoppen on midweek, only in the weekend from 21:20 to 22:50 our is Dutch subtitled content broadcasting.

Disney Channel was launched on April 29, 2007 and is available on Teledünya on channel 169 and on Digiturk on channel 167. All cartoons, movies and live-action shows seen on the channel are dubbed in Turkish.

Disney Channel launched on August 10, 2010 in Russia, replacing Jetix. Disney Channel (Канал Disney) launched on December 31, 2011, the channel replaced Semyorka in the CIS.

Italy

In Italy, the channel launched on December 20, 1997 via Telepiù. On December 21, 2002, the channel launched Disney Channel +1 and Toon Disney +1, followed on February 1, 2003 by the launch of Playhouse Disney. In 2003, Italy passed on Sky initially as an option, then included the channel in its packages. On July 1, 2008, Disney Channel was added to the Mediaset Premium Gallery and later added in the package; on December 8, 2009, Playhouse Disney along with two other channels (Cartoon Network and Hiro), were added to the Premium Fantasy package. Disney Channel on Sky Italy has been enhanced with the timeshift service Toon Disney +1 on channel 614, and Disney in English (on Sky channels 615 and 618, respectively). The offer has been extended even further with the arrival of Disney XD that replaced the Jetix channel on September 28, 2009 (on Sky channel 616) and the channel Jetix +1 (channel 617). This was precisely replaced by timeshift channel Disney XD +1 on channel 616. Additionally, entries not yet formalized heralded the arrival of Disney Cinemagic (substitute for Toon Disney) in both standard (SD) in the version in high definition (HD).

On October 1, 2011, Disney Channel changed its logo and launched a +2 timeshift channel the same day, the first in the world, on Sky channel 615. On October 25, 2011, Disney Channel began broadcasting in 16:9 widescreen. On October 1, 2011, sister channel Disney XD launched a +2 timeshift channel on Sky channel 619, replacing Toon Disney. On February 1, 2012, Disney Channel Italy launched a HD simulcast channel, along with 12 additional Sky Channels.

Poland

Portugal

Disney Channel is available on ZON TVCabo on channel 40, on meo on channel 40 too, Cabovisão on channel 55 and Ar Telecom on channel 26. The channel is available for free to customers on those cable, satellite and IPTV services. It is funded through publicity and subscription fees. Since 2008, Disney Channel Portugal broadcasts without encryption on the country's digital networks. It still offered as a premium service on analogue networks. It was launched in November 2001.

Disney Channel and Disney Channel +1 are available on the Digital+ satellite platform on channels 30 and 31, and in cable platforms. Disney Channel is also available for free on digital terrestrial services since July 1, 2008 (channel 68). The channels broadcast in Spanish with an original language option, American and British programmes broadcast in English on the second track while anime programming is broadcast in Japanese.

United Kingdom & Ireland

Disney Channel is available in the United Kingdom and Ireland since October 1, 1994. A one-hour timeshift service called Disney Channel +1 is available on Sky and Virgin Media. Disney Channel HD launched in the U.K. and Ireland on November 16, 2011.

The Americas

United States

Disney Channel originated in the United States on April 18, 1983, as a premium channel; initial programming included a mix of children's programs and films during the daytime hours and family-oriented movies, classic films and television specials at night. The channel first expanded to basic cable in 1991, when eight cable providers (the first being Jones Intercable's systems in Fort Myers and Broward County, Florida) volunteered to move the channel to their expanded basic cable packages; the channel's carriage on basic cable expanded over time until 2004, when the last cable providers to carry Disney Channel as a pay service moved them to basic tiers as part of a 1999 mandate that in which Disney required cable operators continuing to carry it as a premium service to move the channel to a basic cable tier or it would not renew carriage agreements with those providers.

Original series and movies have become prominent on the flagship channel since the late 1990s, with series such as So Weird, Even Stevens, Lizzie McGuire, That's So Raven and Hannah Montana along with current series such as Good Luck Charlie, A.N.T. Farm and Jessie. High School Musical 2 holds the record for the highest-rated Disney Channel Original Movie, and the highest-rated scripted program in cable television history, when its August 2007 debut was watched by 17.2 million viewers (if briefly held the record for the single most-viewed a basic cable program, until an NFL game between the New England Patriots and the Baltimore Ravens televised on corporate sibling ESPN's Monday Night Football, which was watched by 17.5 million viewers on December 3, 2007).

Disney Channel U.S. has spun off additional channels over time: the first of which was Toon Disney, a digital cable and satellite channel focusing on animated programming, that launched in April 1998. Toon Disney was replaced by Disney XD in February 2009; the channel aimed at boys 7 to 14 years of age features a mix of live-action comedy series and animated comedy and action series such as Kickin' It, Lab Rats and Randy Cunningham: 9th Grade Ninja, including some current and archived program content from Disney Channel. Disney Junior, a preschool-targeted digital cable and satellite channel that was launched in March 2012 (which also serves as the branding for Disney Channel's morning block for that same demographic), features original and some acquired programming targeted at younger children including Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Doc McStuffins and Sofia the First.

Canada

While Disney Channel does not exist as a branded channel in Canada in its own right, its programming has been distributed since 1988 on specialty channel Family Channel (owned by Bell Media through a blind trust, until the channel is sold to another company to comply with conditions of Bell's purchase of Family's former owner Astral Media), which is licensed as premium service though is carried as a basic cable channel on some cable and satellite providers. As a result of the fact that the majority of Disney Channel U.S.'s programs air on Family, coupled with the fact that both channels developed similarly in their respective countries (as both began as premium services before adding availability via basic cable), Family Channel is commonly considered to be a de facto Canadian version of Disney Channel (though it is often mistakenly assumed to be related to ABC Family, a sister network to Disney Channel U.S. which was formerly known as The Family Channel from 1988 to 1998; a Canadian version of ABC Family launched in March 2012, called ABC Spark to avoid confusion with Family Channel, to which it shares no common ownership).

Some Canadian-produced original series produced by Family (such as Life with Derek, Naturally, Sadie, and Overruled!) have aired on Disney Channel in the United States and in other countries in the past. In addition to its program distribution agreement with Disney Channel U.S., Family also operates an English-language version of Disney Junior as a multiplex channel, as CRTC rules allow cable channels licensed as premium services to add multiplex channels consistent with the network's license. Disney XD and a French-language version of Disney Junior are also owned by the Bell Media-held blind trust, operating under separate licenses.

Latin America

In the 1990s, the Disney Channel launched in Latin America on DirecTV as a premium channel. Beginning in the 2000s, the channel became available to other cable providers. In 2003, because of the crisis in Argentina and Mexico, DirecTV removed the channel; the channel space was filled for a short period of time by Fox Kids, Disney Channel returned to the satellite provider in 2004 as part of the basic tier, joining Fox Kids, which was previously exclusive to SKY. Programming featured on Disney Channel Latin America includes Zapping Zone.

Brazil

In the early 2000s, Disney Channel Brazil launched on DirecTV as a premium channel available only on weekends. Later around the same time, when Sky Brazil and Globosat bought the Brazilian Directv, the channel became available to other cable providers and turned into a full-time channel. The channel has its own regular schedule, and is broadcasts in Portuguese.

Caribbean

The flagship U.S. Disney Channel is available to cable and satellite subscribers in Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, the Bahamas, Haiti, and all of the Caribbean. On January 1, 2007 as part of the network's 2007 re-brand campaign, the "Hip" brand name was dropped, and introduced its rectangular current logo along with cuadrilar new graphics. Red Bee Media transformed the channel into a modern-looking appearance and new promos started the week before. Idents started that next Sunday. Cuba and the Dominican Republic receive Disney Channel Latin America.
