Searching an article's history
Is there a way to search the history of an article? For example, an article is citing a book and I'm pretty sure that book is based on an older copy of a Wikipedia article meaning the article is citing Wikipedia and not a reliable source. I know I could hunt-n-peck my way through the history. Is there a way to search it to see at what points a specific phrase may have been in the article? --Marc Kupper|talk 03:22, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Would this be what you are looking for? Calvin 1998 (t·c) 03:30, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

How to Create a Link to a "Diff", please?
What's the right way to create a click-able link on a talk page for the "Diff" that this url
http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steve_Carson&diff=prev&oldid=285822238
points to? ( and could you put "nowiki" tags around your reply, so I don't get confused? )
Thanks! Ohiostandard (talk) 06:41, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Try [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steve_Carson&diff=prev&oldid=285822238] for [1] or [http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Steve_Carson&diff=prev&oldid=285822238 this] for this. –túrianpatois 06:53, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Links
Is there any way on wikipedia to make a link that automatically purges a page without having to go through the "would you like to purge this page" page? Neobenedict (talk) 10:05, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Update: Can it be posted in my talk page? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Neobenedict (talk • contribs) 10:06, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

I am unable to look up for an article, i was on somedays back, today.
Hello,
I was surfing on 'sex' and after much of it i ended up on article( which i dont remmember). It explained about the time not good to have sex eg: sex under rainy, dark sky, thunder causes ill to lady. And about an estimated time of intercourse right after 'her' period for conditioning the sex of the child..and so on. Please, i have surfed alot more with no result. If help can be brought. i seek for it. Please please please, this one you organise is a vast collection and thats where i feel so helpless.
Thanks, 'pa'pi 13:34, 12 September 2009 (UTC) pa. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paandkv (talk • contribs) 13:34, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- What Web browser are you using? When did you view the page you are trying to find? Modern browsers have a "History" item on the menu bar which shows the pages you have recently browsed. Did you view the article on Wikipedia? The bit about a link between sex and weather does not sound encyclopedic, so maybe you did not read that on Wikipedia. See Maternal influence on sex determination and Human sex ratio, and try searching with Google. --Teratornis (talk) 19:25, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
Thank you people.
However, its not it. Fortunately, atleast, i know only one wiki and one google i surf and i read the article here. I was there after checking on many a Hyperlinked word..i can recollect vageuly i was on 'positions', then its ways of performing, e.g,oral, nonpenetrative, mutual mast. then..seminophagia along an animated pic of lady with a jar full of semen, then suddenly to chinese names; thats where i read them all. I dont have the History anymore and am feeling so sorry to have not saved the page. Dint knew the worth less its absence. Only after that i opened this a/c to see if it helps anyhow.
Thanks for the help anyways.
thanks anyways. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Paandkv (talk • contribs) 13:59, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Unable to confirm my email address
I want to get email when one of my watched pages is updated, or if someone sends me a message. I click the link to confirm my email address, and it says it sends me a code, but it never arrives. Is there something else I need to do? --MrsSpooky 14:33, 12 September 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MrsSpooky (talk • contribs)
- Could you double check that you have entered the address correctly? If so, check your spam/junk folder in case an over-zealous filter is blocking the confirmation email. ∙ AJChamtalk 14:43, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Note that the feature to get email notification of edits to watched pages or your talk page is disabled on the English Wikipedia. But a mail with confirmation code should still be sent to the address you give when you try to enable email. If you cannot receive the mail there then you may try another email address. See Help:Email confirmation#Known issues. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:22, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Thanks, that does help explain things. The address is correct and I frequently check my junk mail folder. Nothing. I do not get an email with any codes. I tried 2 email addresses, but both were from the same domain (these are the mailboxes I check frequently). If it doesn't work, then getting the code to enable this feature is moot. Thanks again! --MrsSpooky 18:45, 12 September 2009 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by MrsSpooky (talk • contribs)
New image version does not show off at the article
Hi guys, I uploaded a new version of File:Air Berlin A320.jpg, but in the article still the old one appears. What went wrong? Per aspera ad Astra (talk) 14:42, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- I purged the server cache for that image on Commons, and it is now showing correctly (although you may need to refresh the page, or clear your local cache - Ctrl+F5 - to see it). The new picture was uploaded a month and a half ago, so I am baffled as to why it had not yet updated. ∙ AJChamtalk 14:51, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
How to search for user by IP block range
I've looked here Help:Special_page and tried using Special:AllPages and Special:ListUsers but can't find a way to search for a user by ip block range.
This would be useful to see what edits a particular user from one isp would of likely to have done. 118.208.97.169 (talk) 15:27, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- In your preferences > Gadgets > User Interface Gadgets:
Allow /16 and /24 – /32 CIDR ranges on Special:Contributions forms (uses API), as well as wildcard prefix searches, e.g., "Splark*".

- It helpmed me find a solution that has the dvantage of listing all the contributions from the range in order by date, with the most recent ones first. css for removing the navigation tab
Hi all!
I find that the navigation tab on the left takes up way too much space on my cellphone. What would I have to add to my monobook.css to remove it? Thanks in advance, decltype (talk) 16:31, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- If you're having issues with navigation on a mobile phone, try using the mobile version of Wikipedia at http://en.m.wikipedia.org. Be aware that you cannot edit from the mobile version. If you absolutely must be able to edit, you can go to Special:Preferences and switch to "MySkin", "Nostalgia", or "Chick", which remove all of the left-hand toolboxes. Xenon54 / talk / 16:58, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- The following CSS should zap the four standard boxes on the left, and resize the main content pane to fill the space. Of course this means you lose those four boxes altogether, which rather handicaps the interface. Ask me if you want to just move them to the top; I think they can just be unfloated (so they'll take vertical space rather than horizontal).
div.generated-sidebar { display:none; } div#p-logo { display:none; } div#p-search { display:none; } div#p-tb { display:none; } div#p-lang { display:none; } div#content { margin-left:0; }
- This shouldn't zap editing, so you shouldn't be able to get yourself into an interface that you can't get out of. -- Finlay McWalter • Talk 17:03, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Update: you also need the p-lang line, which I've added above. --Finlay McWalter • Talk 17:11, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

submitting or posting a new page
I created an account and wrote an article. Apparently I didn't submit it correctly because the only place on Wikipedia that it can be found is in my account. When I go to the main page and search for it it's no where to be found. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.171.73.37 (talk) 18:02, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- What was it called? -- Finlay McWalter • Talk 18:06, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- You wrote your article whilst logged into the account you created, so it's not showing up in the contributions history of the anonymous IP address under which you asked this question. You say "the only place on Wikipedia that it can be found is in my account", so it's probable that you have written the text of your article on your user page rather than creating a new article in the encyclopaedia space. That's why it doesn't show up in searches - it's not actually in the encyclopaedia yet. It's actually a good idea to work on a new article in your user space first before it goes live as an article, referring to guidance like Wikipedia:Your first article to ensure that what you are writing meets the site's guidelines and policies and will not be nominated quickly for deletion. You can create a sandbox in your user space if you like, as a convenient place to work on articles. If you can tell us under what account name you created the article, we can advise you whether it's ready to be a Wikipedia article, and we can also leave some handy links on your talk page to help you find your way around the editing process. How do you submit a feature request?
I would like to request that they find a way to localize dates because I'm sick of having to switch dates around in my head when reading an article. Thanks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.235.191.128 (talk) 18:36, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Proposals for changes of this type go to the Village pump, but if by "localize dates" you mean standardize a format for expressing day/month/year, bear in mind that this has been discussed at length over the years. This is a summary of the styles that are currently acceptable. If you mean a feature that would automatically change all dates so they were shown in your own country's preferred format, I suppose some whiz could possibly write some code that would do the job for IP editors whose IP identifies their location (not a clue how though), but it wouldn't work for anyone editing on a named account. Karenjc 19:16, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- If you create an account then you can select a preferred date format at Special:Preferences, but many or most dates may ignore the preference setting. See more at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers)/Date autoformatting. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:24, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Posted by original user: Thanks! I made a new account (made an account years ago but it's probably long gone by now). I hope it helps a bit. And yes I mean a feature that would allow users to display dates the way they want. Writers should be able to enter them any way they want as well. I'll think about it some more and maybe post something in the village pump area. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Vbilaniuk (talk • contribs) 22:12, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- We have a #dateformat magic word that can style the date, but readers who are not logged in will see the raw date. Technically, we could stick a default format, but just don't see any consensus on the mmm-dd-yyyy v. dd-mmm-yyy formats. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 23:00, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

Parsing question (yet again)
Can the parse function
{{#ifeq: (string 1) | (string 2) | (value if equal) | (value if unequal) }}
work with very long strings (say, userpages?)? If so, how (mine doesn't seem to be working)? Also, does that function recognize the expressions "{{Template resulting in string 1}}" and "{{subst:Template resulting in string 1}}" and "string 1" as equal (if not, which, if any)? Thanks in advance. Intelligentsium 19:57, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

I am trying to find a free bettting website where you can bet with imaginary money. Its a very popualr website but forgot the name. Does anyone know? Thanks. --OtherIncomeQuad (talk) 20:46, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hello. I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our roughly three million articles, and thought that we were directly affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is a help desk for asking questions related to using the encyclopedia. Thus, we have no inside track on the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the left hand side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. Intelligentsium 21:24, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hi, the help desk is only for asking questions about how to use Wikipedia, I'm sure the folks at the Reference desk wouldn't mind helping you find your website. Jeffrey Mall (talk • contribs) - 21:28, 12 September 2009 (UTC)

- I don't think files ending in .ovg can be uploaded. Wikipedia:Creation and usage of media files says: "As of December 2008, the following file types may be uploaded: png, gif, jpg/jpeg, xcf, pdf, mid, ogg, svg, djvu." What is the exact name of the file? PrimeHunter (talk) 12:14, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Creating an account
I tried to create an account with the user name consisting of 4ea tilde symbols (to the left of the [1] key). When I submit the request (along with a password) the Login server apparently crashes. I hope I didn't break it. Anyways, what is going wrong? 174.146.36.96 (talk) 23:41, 12 September 2009 (UTC)
- Tildes probably don't work in usernames. If you are having problems creating an account, you can request an account here. I create accounts, and I would be glad to process your request promptly. Intelligentsium 00:08, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- Since four tildes are wikimarkup for a signature, that probably won't work; if it did, it would be confusing. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 00:27, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

Template over text problem

- Instructions for starting an RfA are at Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Nominate. However, it's very unlikely that an editor with fewer than 500 edits will have a successful RfA. Shubinator (talk) 05:21, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- I suggest you not transclude your nomination at all and ask for the page created to be deleted by tagging it with {{db-g7}}. The fact that you are nominating yourself for adminship without doing the necessary research to know that you have no chance whatever of passing adminship given your lack of experience, and are in fact unfit to act as an administrator for the same reason, is a good reason to question your fitness for adminship in the first place. I suggest you read Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:54, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- I agree, not due to an assessment of your abilities as an editors, but the individuals looking at your request will see this, and likely call for a closure. Sephiroth storm (talk) 08:21, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- I agree with the above. You are not ready to be an administrator - I have explained in a bit more detail on your talk page. My advice to you would be to read the advice above and on the RfA page. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 09:52, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- Incidently, putting a message here could be construed as Canvassing, which is expressly discouraged for RfAs (see Wikipedia:Requests_for_adminship/Nominate#User_notification) -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 10:20, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
Honestly, you will definitely need to wait for a few thousand edits + experience with various Wikipedia functions (i.e. Huggle/Rollback) before you even have a slim likelyhood of being awarded adminship. I recently started an RfA, and it was closed within hours... Ojay123 (Talk•E-Mail•Contribs•Sandbox) 00:19, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Citations in the lead section
My question is: Since the lead section of an article is meant to summarize the rest of the article, are references/citations required in the lead section? All of the information in the lead section will be supported in the article body with citations/references. Just want to know if they're needed in the lead section too.

Australian Network Television Schedule

- It might work for the commercial networks. You will notice the main American commercial networks - ABC, CBS and NBC - all have schedules, while PBS doesn't. So creating schedules for Seven, Nine, and Ten might work, but not for the other ABC or SBS, because public stations don't generally have rigid weekly schedules. The folks at WikiProject Television Stations might be able to advise you further on this matter. Xenon54 / talk / 11:54, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

I have added 2 quotations at the beginning of this article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniela_Malusardi).

- Thanks for the suggestion to look at my browser history, Phantomsteve! It seems to show that at 10:30 I went to the link for "N.Y.'s Landmarks Conservancy Awards Grants to Synagogues", one of the references for the article, which I do not think was problematic, and then at 10:35 I went to a certain link I won't name directly here. It doesn't show me going to any nytimes.com pages at all. I'm guessing that I clicked on a nytimes.com link, and a hacker somehow hijacked my browser to go to their site. I did a web search for that, and found this discussion showing I'm not the only one who had that problem: [2]. I guess it's up to the New York Times to fix it. ☺Coppertwig (talk) 16:20, 13 September 2009 (UTC)

- Instead of assuming that I'm a newbie, click on the article and look at the malformed taxobox. How can I fix it? Joe Chill (talk) 16:17, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- I played around with it using "preview". There was an extra semicolon, quotation mark and pipe displaying just before the name "Rustic wolf spider". I found that changing the regnum from "[[Animal]]ae" to "[[Animal]]ia" seemed to fix it: I have no idea why (and I assume that might be making the information less correct). However, Rkitko seems to have fixed it meanwhile. In future, when asking questions like this, it would be helpful to provide more information. It would have helped to have stated what was wrong with it (i.e. was it the extra semicolon and stuff you were concerned about?) and also to give a link to a page with correct display: I needed that for comparison, to experiment with. ☺Coppertwig (talk) 16:42, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- My former post linked to the fix [4] by me. The regnum parameter is passed to {{Taxobox colour}} which compares it to a limited number of allowed values. There is discussion at Template talk:Taxobox colour. Pages with invalid regnum value are placed in Category:Taxoboxes with an invalid color. The category is currently hidden on the invalid version [5] but only because I hid it after making the fix. Special:Preferences has the option "Show hidden categories" under Appearance. Unable to login due to capitalization
I am unable to login to my account, StJenna, as every time I go to the login page and type it my name, it "corrects" my username to all lowercase. So, when I hit enter, it says that username does not exist, even though I know it exists, because I can see my account on the articles I've updated (ex: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daniel_Garcia_%28director%29). I know my username is case sensitive, so I'm unsure how I can log in when the field is automatically reverting that way. I've noticed on the Spanish Wikipedia that they have several links to several tools on a page's history page. You can click to get a list of editors, contribution details, search the history, get general statistics on an article, or check the number of visits to a page. Check out this page. The Herramientas are tools (list of editors, contribution details, and history search), the Estadísticas are statistics (general stats and number of visits). We should add this to our pages too. A possible error?
Hi,
Checking my account history brings up several entries which I am positive I have not had a hand at. For example, I received a message from a member here in Wikipedia telling me I have repeatedly blanked large sections of various articles without consensus. Not being confident in my editing skills, I have only ever done some paraphrasing and spelling corrections, yet my history clearly shows this is not the case.

Today's featured picture
The page is protected from editing and I have no idea where one is supposed to go to point this out, but the text appending the photo of Gerald R. Ford is wrong. It reads, in part:

I have created a wikitable / chart ... but it's not doing quite what I want it to do. What is the correct help page to get specific feedback? Is it this page ... or some other? Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro, 13 September 2009)
- This is the right page. You are going to have to tell us which article you're talking about. Looking at your contributions, it might be Donald Brown (American football) but that article doesn't have any tables that are screwed up. Help:Table might answer your question, otherwise please ask here. Xenon54 / talk / 22:16, 13 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hi. Thanks. Please see the second chart (Testing new chart #1: Revised) on this page: Talk:Donald Brown (American football). Here are my 2 questions. (1) How do I make the words "Rushing" and "Receiving" in the top row become centered across their respective 4-column spaces? (2) How can I get the word "Year" in only one box and also be centered? In other words, take BOTH boxes that currently say "Year" ... and make them become only one bigger box that is "taller". In other words, take the current two boxes that say "Year" and just make them all one larger box? If possible, I would like the word "Year" centered (both vertically and horizontally) in the new larger (2-row) box. Thank you. (Joseph A. Spadaro, 13 September 2009)
- I believe I've fixed the chart at Talk:Donald Brown (American football)#Revised.
- It looks like you already figured out that yourself by adding "colspan".
- I fixed "Year" like you requested, using "rowspan".
- You can learn more about using both of these at Help:Table#Combined use of COLSPAN and ROWSPAN. hmwith☮ 22:02, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- I believe I've fixed the chart at Talk:Donald Brown (American football)#Revised.
- Thanks for your help. You did indeed help me solve problem number 2. But not problem number 1. Regarding problem number 1 ... I was able to use "colspan" to get the words Receiving and Rushing in the correct cells. But -- what I was struggling with -- was getting the words to be "centered" within the 4-column span. In other words, right now, it says: "Receiving - blank space - blank space - blank space - blank space - etc." What I would like it to say is: "blank space - blank space - blank space - blank space - Receiving - blank space - blank space - blank space - blank space" (so that it the word is in the center of the 4-column span). This would be similar to the way that the word Redshirted appears in the (original) Chart directly on top of this (revised) Chart on that Talk Page. Thanks. (Joseph A. Spadaro, 14 September 2009)
- What browser are you using? Internet Explorer? It showed up fine (centered) when I viewed it originally in Firefox. It also shows up fine in Chrome. However, when I tried it in IE, it showed up on the left. I'm afraid that it won't center in IE for some reason; IE has a lot of similar issues. I'd recommend an upgrade to another browser, such as Firefox. Then, you won't have so many problems with pages showing up oddly on Wikipedia or otherwise. hmwith☮ 01:51, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Timor-Leste Red Cross Page
Hi,
The page I wrote for Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste has been tagged for imminent deletion, as the information and most of the words were taken from the Society's home page. But I wrote that too, and have given myself permission to reuse it on wikipedia. The reason I did so was to attract more attention and awareness of our humanitarian cause. I'm new to wikipedia, so let me know how to meet the guidelines and I shall conform. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Henrycornwell (talk • contribs) 00:48, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- You need evidence of permission - simply permission itself is not sufficient. Also, please see our guidelines on notability of organizations, or the problem will go from a G12 violation to an A7 violation. Intelligentsium 01:00, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Are you saying I need to email and respond to myself asking for and confirming permission? A bit odd. Once I've done that, where do I leave the proof? With regards to the notability of the red cross, what sort of evidence do you need? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Henrycornwell (talk • contribs) 01:46, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- A copy and paste from a website will be unduely self serving. Creating an article for promotional reasons raises concerns. Please see Wikipedia:Your first article and WP:SOAPBOX. Wikipedia:Articles for creation may be useful and you need to read Wikipedia:Conflict of interest.Cptnono (talk) 01:58, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
OK, I'll think about the ethics of self promotion once I'm through the copyright issue. Until then, could somebody please tell me exactly how to establish that there is no copyright issue? Henrycornwell (talk) 02:39, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- No. It shouldn't be pulled from the site at all. It is a concern of self promotion. Read all of the links provided to you and make sure you are finding reliable sources from independent third partiesx (news coverage, books, ect) that assert that the group is notable enough for inclusion. Then a fresh article needs to be created that is not a mirror of the website.Cptnono (talk) 03:33, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- Have you read WP:IOWN? As it says there, merely saying permission is granted is not enough. You either need to make a note permitting reuse under the Creative Commons Attribution-Sharealike 3.0 Unported License (CC-BY-SA) and the GNU Free Documentation License (GFDL) (unversioned, with no invariant sections, front-cover texts, or back-cover texts) on the website, or send an email from an address associated with the original publication (usually this means from the domain the website is at, in this case redcross.tl) to the address given at IOWN. If you can do either of those, then the text could be reused on Wikipedia.
- However, despite your noble intentions, Wikipedia is not a place to attract more attention and awareness of our humanitarian cause - this is an encyclopedia, not a directory of good causes. My advice is the same as Cptnono's - find reliable third-party, independent, reliable sources of information about Cruz Vermelha de Timor-Leste and cite them - if you're not sure how to cite references, see WP:CITE. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 10:56, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Help with messy mass deletion
I'm currently involved in an AfD debate regarding the fate of 60 or so very similar articles. There was already a debate on one of the articles for which the result was Delete, but though the text of the debate was indicating that all of the articles were included, only the one with the title of the AfD was actually deleted. Now we're on the second try but for reasons that would take too long to explain, only 10 of the remaining 59 articles were included in the new AfD. You tell us where and when he is born, where he went to high school and the school he went to in Chicago after that, but absolutely nothing else is mentioned about his parents, whether he has any brothers or sisters, whether he's Irish, Native American, or anything like that. You're article immediately goes into his professional life, and talk about his later personal life on wives, and kids. And that's it. After he played a half Native American Sherriff on the movie, Bone Eater, that aired on SyFy tonight. I came to you to find what his real life heritage was, but you had nothing. However, when I thought of Chuck Norris and knew that his character, Walker Texas Ranger, was half Native American, I checked him out on your site, and you had it all there. Why is there such a difference? Surely, there has to be someone on your staff to fill in the missing information for the article on Mr. Boxleitner. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Bobbyr54 (talk • contribs) 03:28, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

Task force, templates, and talk page banners
I'm part of a small task force, Wikipedia:Wikiproject European History/Sub-Roman Britain task force. Most of the articles within our purview are pretty bad, and I'm hoping to raise our profile a bit. I gather that task forces can't have their own talk page banners, and in any case I'd like us to be able to take advantage of Wikipedia:Article alerts. I gather from looking at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Guide/Task forces that the template of the European History wikiproject could be modified to accomplish this, but I don't have the skills to do it. Can anyone help? Thanks. Dougweller (talk) 04:49, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
Clarification on the WP:NOT#DIRECTORY policy
Do street addresses fall under this criteria? ArcAngel (talk) 06:43, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- In what context? Wikipedia contains some street addresses of notable locations. For example, {{Infobox Skyscraper}} has a
street-address1
field. But geographic coordinates are often better than street addresses, since many mapping programs can read them from Wikipedia's articles; see {{Coord}}. --Teratornis (talk) 08:23, 14 September 2009 (UTC)- As I read the policy, listing the street address, i.e. the physical location, of the Trump Tower, for example, would be perfectly acceptable. Discussing its connection to Donald Trump would be acceptable. Listing all the building's occupants and their phone, fax, and e-mail numbers would not. That would be a directory. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 08:29, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- Ok, so based on your interpretation, listing the street address for any building that has an article is OK then? I was under the impression that it might be viewed as an invasion of privacy for some. ArcAngel (talk) 08:43, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- There would be no "invasion of privacy" issue for a notable building in and of itself. Who lives or works there could be "invasion of privacy", although if Trump lives in the Trump Tower that wouldn't likely qualify. Public figures whose residence is verifiable might not be an issue. "Exposing" such information, as noted below, would be a problem. Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots 09:09, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- There are of course concerns with biographies of living people. That is why it states "Presumption in favor of privacy: Wikipedia articles that present material about living people can affect their subjects' lives. Wikipedia editors who deal with these articles have a responsibility to consider the legal and ethical implications of their actions when doing so... Biographies of living persons must be written conservatively, with regard for the subject's privacy." WP:BLP. Where a commercial building is should be fine but the address of a porn star would be a problem.Cptnono (talk) 08:58, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

- See WP:FOOT, WP:CITE, WP:CITET, and WP:LAYOUT. You can use the {{Cite journal}} template. The more bibliographic information you give, the easier it will be for other users to check your sources. Humorous
Why are there humorous pages starting with "Wikipedia:"?--Mikespedia (talk) 14:00, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- Because Wikipedians have a sense of humour too! See Category:Wikipedia humor - as it says at the top of that page: "These pages contain material which is kept because the contents are considered humorous. They are not intended, nor should they be used, for any research or serious use." (also: "This page in a nutshell: Inside a nutshell it's too dark to read this page!") -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 14:13, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- Also, pages starting with wikipedia are not encyclopedia articles, but more the admin side of the encyclopedia - and sometimes people put things there that make other editors smile - a valid function in and of itself! The server space used by those articles is minor, so as it helps spread Wikilove and besides, the Department of Fun would be most put out if they weren't there! -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 14:22, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- I'm with you Mike. I'm not opposed to humor (though some of my friends beg to differ.) I have no problem with humor articles but after noting that virtually all articles of the form WP:x are quasi-official, I was surprised to run across one that was clearly not, and I assumed it had been vandalized. I'd prefer to reserve WP:x for official business, and maybe create FUN:x for humorous entries. Maybe we could even shorten it to FU:x, and let someone take the bait.--SPhilbrickT 15:41, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- Mikespedia and Sphilbrick - please note that all humorous articles are clearly marked as such at the top of their page, so no one can be under the impression that it is a serious page. I'm not sure if there would be enough in this category to justify creating a new name space (FUN:) - or how easy this would be to implement anyway. The purpose of humorous articles is to make editors feel happier - which makes for better editors, or so the theory goes! -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 17:51, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

immediate image license help would be nice
Hi, image creators are getting links to Wikipedia:Image_license_migration which makes no sense to me (I am a creator) nor the three other creators who commented on my request for more info on the discussion page there. Could someone edit that page to add a link to a sort of "Wikipedia and licenses for created content" article or just write a paragraph or two. This is time sensitive because a bot is currently linking every creator's images back to this article which might have been understandable to its authors, but is not comprehensible to me. Why was my disambiguation link to 101 (disambiguation) removed from 101?
I added a link to the disambiguation page at the top of 101 but it was removed with the summary "that was a subset of the existing hatnote". I don't understand what that means, many other year articles have links to disambiguation pages, ie 1, 2, 3, 33, 50, 999, 2001, etc. 101 already has a link to 101 (number), but that is not a disambiguation page. Why was my edit disallowed but all these others remain? I was only basing it on the convention that exists in the articles 1 - 10. Nelson58 (talk) 14:17, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- The other editor was right to remove your two links - but inadvertently used the wrong link themselves! A specific link to the 101 (number) isn't required as well as to 101 (disambiguation), as the number is on the latter page anyway. I have corrected it so that it shows "This article is about the year. For other uses, see 101 (disambiguation)." - the number 101 is linked to on the disamb page. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 14:32, 14 September 2009 (UTC)

After a quick glance at the Bhutan article, I see that it uses the British spellings of words. Is using British spellings a Wikipedia policy? Just a minor curiosity. Digital Satyr (talk) 19:58, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- The policy is at WP:ENGVAR; in brief it recommends using the appropriate variant for the topic at hand if there is an appropriate variant; otherwise, remain consistent with the way the article has been started. So, Bhutan could have been started in any common variant, but there's no reason to change it. --AndrewHowse (talk) 20:16, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- The Manual of Style guide on national varieties of English will tell you all you need to know. In a nutshell though, WP doesn't standardise on one form, but does encourage editors to keep the use consistent within an article. Also, if the subject has a strong national tie, then favour the appropriate variation. Eg. Barack Obama's article should use American spelling, and Sydney Opera House should use Australian etc. ∙ AJChamtalk 20:17, 14 September 2009 (UTC)
- (e/c) Basically, an article that has strong regional ties to a specific dialect of English should use that dialect, else it's just whichever one it was originally written in. So articles about London and London would use British spellings, while the article on London would use American spellings. (Confused yet? =P) Since Bhutan has nothing to do with the UK, the US, or any other English-speaking country, then I guess the person who initially wrote it was British. How to remove a user page from a category
This user page contains a vanity article about a minor company and is linked into various categories (where it shows up under its "User:..." name - also looks very out of place). How would I go about removing it from the categories? The obvious way would be to delete the category links from the user page, but I suppose I can't just do that to another person's user page. It can't be removed category page-side, can it? Nectocaris (talk) 02:48, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- I have commented out the categories and left a note on the user's talk page - with a pointer to Wikipedia:Categories#User_pages. Although it is a user page, the editor does not own the pages there - it is generally reckoned polite to leave a message on the talk page and leave it to the user to sort it out, but as this user hasn't done anything since 11th March, they might not see the message for a long time! -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 03:00, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Disambiguation question
Hi, I am a newbie here and have a problem: If you search "Wesley Dennis", an article will come up about the singer. However, there was another Wesley Dennis who was an illustrator. So I wrote a stub called Wesley Dennis (illustrator). But my problem is, I want it so that when you search "Wesley Dennis", a disambiguation page will come up for Wesley Dennis, and you can choose between Wesley Dennis the singer and Wesley Dennis the illustrator. (See the draft for the disambiguation page here.) How can I do this? ESFJ Girl (talk) 04:45, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hiya, ESFJ Girl! Notability counts in the decision to make a Dab page or just hatnotes. If both people are considered equally notable, then a Dab page is used. If, say, the singer is more notable than the illustrator, then hatnote placed at the TOP of the article pages are all that's needed. The hatnotes would look like this:
- and a similar hatnote can be placed at the TOP of the illustrator's page:
- If you decide that both artists are of about the same notability, then go ahead with your Dab page. There should be no pipes, so the entries might look like:
- Wesley Dennis, an American country singer
- Wesley Dennis (illustrator), an American author and book illustrator
- Then place {{otheruses}} templates at the top of the artist pages. They'll look like:
- (but the dab link will be to your new page.) Once all this is in place, it won't matter what a search for "Wesley Dennis" turns up, because all bases will be covered.
- Hope this helps! — .`^) Paine Ellsworthdiss`cuss (^`. 07:16, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

I'd like to know if user pages like User:Ronewirl's are ok. It's full of religious quotes and has a link to a personal blog. -- Marawe (talk) 06:43, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- I would say no, not because of links, but because of content. The entire content of the page is neither connected with Wikipedia nor about the user personally, but is in my view "Advertising or promotion of a business, organization, or group unrelated to Wikipedia". --ColinFine (talk) 07:31, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Bear in mind though, that if a user creates a page in the main name space but it is deleted (for say spam), they may then recreate it in their user space, it seems fair to then give them some time to work on the page in their user space. All the best SpitfireTally-ho! 07:55, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- ColinFine, I don't think this is advertising - merely trying to spread the word about Jesus - although I suppose that could be counted as advertising in one way! A look at the user's contributions shows that since July this year, they have been working on Jesus-related stuff. My guess is that they "found" Jesus in July, and want to go out and "make disciples of all men"!
- Marawe, if you think that the user is wrong to have the content on the page, then the first step would be to leave a polite message on the editor's User_talk:Ronewirl user page. They are a user who has been around for a year, so not a newbie. Read through What may I not have on my user page? (and also What may I have on my user page). Let them know your concerns and give them a reasonable amount of time to respond. If you still think it is a concern, then you can put them up for discussion for deletion (it wouldn't meet any of the criteria for Speedy Deletion, and a Proposal for Deletion would probably be contested) - see Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion (MfD) for details of the process. If you do go to MfD, make sure you have relevant policies/guidelines to quote showing the reason why this page should be deleted - just saying "it doesn't look right" or "there shouldn't be religious quotes" or "there shouldn't be a link to a personal blog" wouldn't be enough - although the latter could be used as part of the argument - but bear in mind that that particular blog is an evangelising blog, rather than advertising a company per se - it not trying to sell anything apart from the message about Jesus. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 09:07, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
auto tabulation of en wiki page text ?
- More often I do translations at Marathi Language wikipedia. I am looking for some facility that will give me any all sentenses (or with comas to fullstop clauses) from selected english wikipedia page/s in table format one after another with second blank column which we can use for translated sentense.
I want to do this for selected number of representative pages from each category. So we can build a frequently required translation corpus at our local wikipedia that will save our time to some extent.
Thanks and Regards Mahitgar (talk) 08:58, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- To my knowledge, this doesn't exist, but you can use a table to make one yourself. hmwith☮ 10:16, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
English Static Wikipedia download
I have twice downloaded wikipedia-en-html.tar.7z, but both 7Zip and WinRAR tell me it's broken and cannot complete the operation. Any help to get this working would be much appreciated. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.194.221.231 (talk) 09:04, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

- Have you tried the Science section of Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in answering knowledge questions there; this help desk is only for questions about using Wikipedia. For your convenience, here is the link to post a question there: click here. I hope this helps. Zain Ebrahim (talk) 09:31, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Class wiki
My college EN102 class has a class wiki page where the professor posts articles. Is there any specific way to search for such a page? Thanks MRamos45 (talk) 09:54, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- This is Wikipedia - the encyclopedia. You'll need to check with your professor to find out how to access your class wiki. Zain Ebrahim (talk) 10:04, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) Understand that Wikipedia is not the only wiki. "Wiki" is a generic, non-specific word that describes a concept, a class of Internet software, and a type of website. There are thousands of them. Try searching for it through a school website or Google until you can ask your professor for the URL. hmwith☮ 10:11, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Is your professor Victoria Kingsley? If so, you probably want this - there's a help section in that page where you might find tips on searching. Zain Ebrahim (talk) 10:09, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Possessive and italics = bold?
How do you avoid the problem of an italicised word that needs an apostrophe and an "s" turning everything into bold as in this example [8] ? I changed it but the possessive of Leyden (it should be Leyden's not Leydens, but put the apostr. in and it is all emboldened) is now wrong. Thanks, Ericoides (talk) 10:39, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Options: (1) reword it, as I have done. (2)
USS Leydensdoh!(3) USS Leyden's (click edit to see how option (3) is generated using "nowiki tags". BencherliteTalk 10:46, 15 September 2009 (UTC)- Great, option 3 was what I was looking for. Many thanks, Ericoides (talk) 10:49, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) (multiple) You can use something like {{nothing}}. hmwith☮ 10:52, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

- Details on all time zones can be found at Time zone. Details of central time zone at Central Time Zone (Americas) (which I think is the one you want). This is an online encyclopedia; type it in and search :) ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 14:13, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

- Not done. Thanks for your concern, but there is unsufficient recent activity to warrant a block at this time. In the future, please use WP:AIV to report vandalism. Regards, decltype (talk) 14:17, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- (edit conflict)Reports on vandalism should be made to WP:AIV. And you have to warn them as appropriate before warning so that they have a chance to stop before being blocked. There is no need to block at this time, but I will kep an eye on it. ≈ Chamal talk ¤ 14:20, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

Guidelines
I see to remember it says somewhere that guidelines are not binding in the sense that users of specific projects/templates/etc. may choose collectively to deviate from guidelines. Where does it say so? Debresser (talk) 14:21, 15 September 2009 (UTC)

the old "I accidentally showed my IP address" question
True or false: If your session logged out, and you accidentally saved an edit, thereby revealing your IP address, there's absolutely no way for an administrator to remove it from the edit history of that page. Cynwolfe (talk) 17:19, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- Admins can't link the IP address to the account, only a CheckUser can do that. The IP address will always show on the history of that page, but unless you make it obvious, no one will link your account to an IP address. The exception, of course, is if there are accusations of sockpuppetry against you. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 17:26, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
- An administrator can delete the whole page and afterwards restore selected versions without restoring the IP version. The IP will still be visible to other administrators and the IP version may accidentally be restored later. However, Wikipedia:Oversight#Policy says: "This includes hiding revisions made by editors who were accidentally logged out and thus inadvertently revealed their own IP addresses." The proper procedure is to go to Wikipedia:Requests for oversight. There the edit can be deleted by an oversighter so administrators cannot see or restore it (oversighters can still do it but there are few of those). PrimeHunter (talk) 17:36, 15 September 2009 (UTC)
Question about code for ~~~~ and inclusion via Signature template
Hi. I am trying to add the ~~~~~ timestamp to my signature so that it would only activate it on use of the signature. I tried this code: <noinclude><nowiki></noinclude>~~~~~<noinclude></nowiki>, but it turns out like this: </noinclude>~~~~~<noinclude>... Any body have any ideas how else to do this?
