Referencing information released under a UK Freedom Of Information act request.
Hi, I've recently had an MoD FOI request answered. I like to reference the information in an article. I have a few questions:

* How? Do the MoD host their answered requests on a website? If not, how would I reference this?
* Some photos have also been released, does Wikipedia still treat these as UK crown copyright.

If possible I'd like to communicate via e-mail please. Thankyou for your time. <strong><font color="Black">Ryan</font><font color="CornflowerBlue">4314</font></strong> (talk) 22:47, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Please do your own homework.

Welcome to the Wikipedia Help desk. Your question appears to be a homework question. I apologize if this is a misevaluation, but it is our policy here not to do people's homework for them, but merely to aid them in doing it themselves. Letting someone else do your homework does not help you learn how to solve such problems.
Please attempt to solve the problem yourself first. You can search Wikipedia or search the Web.
If you need help with a specific part of your homework, the Reference desk can help you grasp the concept. Do not ask knowledge questions here, just those about using Wikipedia. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 00:58, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

problem

I am trying to get an unsourced (and grossly inaccurate/misleading, but never mind that for now) paragraph deleted from an article, see discussion here: Talk:Insect_morphology#Third_paragraph_in_lede

My deletion of the paragraph was reverted without any reasons given

I am not going to risk an edit war by deleting it again

nobody else who is currently involved will delete it

what can I do?

the paragraph, being unsourced, is against policy, so should be easily deleted, but everybody currently involved refuses to follow that policy

the article with that paragraph reflects very badly indeed on the quality of information of Wikipedia ... Stho002 (talk) 01:50, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How do you get a wikipedia page

I was wondering what the process is for getting a wikipedia page for yourself/company? DJBeanz (talk) 03:15, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In general, companies or people should not write about themselves. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest and Wikipedia:Autobiographies for more details. If people/companies are notable enough they often will have articles written on them already by non-affiliated editors.Jasper Deng (talk) 03:18, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also see Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations. --Jayron32 04:03, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
And, to add another proviso, you may not want a 'page for yourself/company' - you won't have any control on who edits it - and negative content is judged by the same standard as positive content. AndyTheGrump (talk) 04:12, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Oooops - I messed up

Hi - I was trying to edit the wiki site about Deltora Quest 2. I was simply tidying the spelling and grammar, but I indented somewhere and now parts of the site have disappeared!

The words are there if you look in edit, but my indenting seems to have done something to the public page. I did not want to ruin someone else's hard work. Help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Raym2402 (talkcontribs) 03:18, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I see you have fixed it yourself. As you discovered, leading spaces cause special formatting. PrimeHunter (talk) 03:55, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Creating a text macro in an article or providing some way to replicate text from a prior place in the article.

A persistent problem at Extrasolar planet is that the number (and "as-of" date) of extrasolar planets is in two places, and very frequently only one gets updated (the count is probably updated a dozen times per month). There is already a comment pointing out the second usage.

I'd like to fix this by coding some sort of text macro, and referencing that in both places. I don't want to do a template (although I'm not ruling that out - my template foo is weak), since that would require putting the count and date on a separate page, which would make it significantly more difficult to edit. Something like meta:Extension:Labeled_Section_Transclusion / mw:Extension:Labeled_Section_Transclusion would appear to be perfect for the job, but is not available on the English Wikipedia.

Is there someway to do an "inline" template in the article, in which I could embed the count and date, or some form of macro or substitution that I've missed? Or any other suggestion on dealing with this? And yes, the thought of rewording things to eliminate the second use has occurred to me, but I don't think it can be done without major surgury, nor would it help clarity. Thanks, Rwessel (talk) 04:58, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not aware of any way to do this other than a template, short of wrapping the entire article in noinclude tags and transcluding itself, but that seems really messy and is not the right path to go down. Avicennasis @ 10:56, 10 Elul 5771 / 10:56, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The count is also in other articles such as Discoveries of extrasolar planets and Planet. A template seems reasonable to me. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:42, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
That does make a template rather more appealing. Do you know of any examples of that sort of thing being done? I can see several ways to do that, but if there's an established pattern, I'd prefer to follow that. Not to mention having something to point to when people tell me I'm nuts for doing this.  ;-) Rwessel (talk) 19:47, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The only example for inline use I can think of at the moment is NUMBEROF which uses bot generated data at , but it's quite different from your case and doesn't seem a useful model for coding there. is an example of an updated table currently used in two articles. It was split from one of the articles in [1]. Note how it uses <noinclude>...Reflist...</noinclude> to display the reference on the template page. Henry Raeburn Dobson

Account of research into a subject

In his biography of the subject,Dr.Cabris refers to Raeburns marriage to Isabella Rae Smith Dawson. He states that the marriage did not last long as his RAF record of 1942 shows him as being seperated although no record of a divorce can be found. Although seperated they were still not divorced by 1945 as she married again that year and later in the same year was convicted and sent to prison for bigamy. Below is a brief history of her life post Raeburn. Should it, could it be included in Wikipedia. If so how should I proceed.

In his biography of Henry Raeburn Dobson, Dr.Cabris refers to a curious episode concerning his marriage to one Isabel Rae Smith Dawson. This marriage took place in 1939 and according to Dr Cabris did not last long as in 1942 his RAF record shows that he was separated from his wife although no record of a divorce seems to be available. It is also stated that while his mother and sister did not like his wife being somewhat suspicious of her stated history, his nephews and nieces and other members of his family very much enjoyed her company.

Dr.Cabris’ research shows Isabella’s father was in fact a moulder from Falkirk not, as she claimed, a research chemist. He concludes that part of the biography by saying that nothing further is known of Isabella.

I am in the position to shed some light on the later life of Isabella, as I am married to her daughter whose birth certificate shows Henry Raeburn Dobson as being her father.

Isabella Rae Smith Dawson was indeed the daughter of a moulder, Hugh Smith Leishman Dawson of Falkirk. She and her sisters Elizabeth and Ann together with brothers Hugh and John were born in Falkirk. The family then moved to Birmingham where her father took employment in a Birmingham foundry. It was there that her sister Jean and brother William were born.

Isabella moved to London early in the war years where we believe she worked as a telephonist. How she managed to move in such circles that she met Raeburn we have never known and she never ever spoke about it. My wife was born in January 1944 and as previously stated, her birth certificate shows Henry were Raeburn Dobson as being her father. Why he was put down as being her father we will never know. Suffice to say, that until my wife was 40 and her mother was dying she always thought that he was her father. It was only in the last few weeks of her life and she told my wife the name of her true father, one William J Stangel of the USAF. Following the death of Isabella in 1983 my wife learnt a little more from her stepfather, but strangely, none of her aunts and uncles who knew much more were forthcoming with any more information, indeed, they all denied having any.

Through good luck, the Internet and a little investigative work we have discovered the following.

In 1945 Isabella married Capt. William J Stangel of the USAF who flew a Mustang in the American Squadron nicknamed the blue nosed bastards. He achieved the fighter pilot status of “Ace” with five, possibly six, kills to his name. As Dr Cabris has said there appears to be no record of a divorce between her and Raeburn and indeed later in 1945 she was tried and found guilty of bigamy and sent to prison. During that time my wife was sent to live with her grandmother in Birmingham. Obviously the marriage to Capt. Stangel would have been nullified due to the bigamous element, but whether that also served to complete the divorce from Raeburn is not known and as previously stated no record of any such divorce appears to be available.

In later years Isabella married and RAF sergeant who accepted and treated my wife no differently to the son he and Isabella had in 1949.

As stated previously Isabella died in 1983 having been ill for some time. Our research shows that Captain, later Major, Stangel died in 1974.

If you have additional information about Henry Raeburn Dobson, you are encouraged to be bold and edit the article yourself. However you need publicly available reliable sources for the information: personal knowledge and original research are not acceptable, because they are not verifiable. You may however discuss the information you have on the article's talk page, where perhaps somebody else can find published sources for it. The talk page is in any case a better place to discuss it than here, because few of the people reading this page are likely to have any particular interest in the subject. --ColinFine (talk) 17:54, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

2 questions

1. Why sign when there's sinebot?
2. Should I put a space before the ~~~~?
3. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 213.107.74.132 (talkcontribs)

A few reasons: There's lots of discussion pages on Wikipedia where sinebot doesn't operate; sinebot doesn't just sign in the way you would, it is noting an error in the manner it does it, showing you are not with the program; it doesn't do it immediately always and can also be down at times, meaning people may see you post without knowing its author. Use this form with no preceding space: --~~~~.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:34, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need -- in front of ~~~~. I don't know know why the signature button above the edit box adds --. Most users make a space before ~~~~. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:32, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
No you don't need the -- but about a quarter of users use it or an en- or em-dash and with it there's no need for a space. It also acts as a noticeable separator, especially when the text immediately preceding the signature is linked, and is a long-standing convention (outside wikipedia) for a typed name as opposed to a true signature.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:25, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, you have made only one edit and you need to be auto-confirmed before you can upload images; so you can make 9 more edits and wait a few days to upload it yourself, or provide a link to the new logo on the official site and someone else can upload the logo for you. non-diuretic hot/cold beverages

> I just had my prostate removed in Jan. 2011and the incontinence, I feel is not improving. I did have a cancerous tumor, but I am now cancer free. I was advised by my urologist to drink plenty of fluids and wear mens diapers until it improves completely. I have been following his advice. > > I need to find a non-diuretic hot/cold beverage. I have searched the internet many times to no avail. If I drink coffee or tea it is only one cup a day and always de-caffinated. But this does not seem to work. I still wake up almost every day with a very wet diaper. I also take several medications, generic lovenox 200MG per day, generic prevacid, casodex (generic bicalutamide), librax for IBS, diltiazem (blood pressure pill), crestor, generic paxil, lubron injections every 16 weeks, and occasionally tylenol for any pain. I am even doing kegel exercises, but have an ileostomy which is temporary because I developed an upper and lower colon infection and was hospitalized for over a month. > > I know this may be complicated because of all the medications. But can you recommend to me any non-diuretic hot/cold beverages that will help alleviate some incontinence? I use Wikipedia often and find it helpful, but there is nothing listed on this subject. I would know why the articles Sociedade Brasileira de Matemática Aplicada e Computacional and Olimpíada Brasileira de Matemática das Escolas Públicas were marked as Unambiguous advertising or promotion and were eliminated after. If these items are Unambiguous advertising or promotion, so all articles about mathematics in Brazil are also Unambiguous advertising or promotion too.

Wikipedia displaying weird font, look like Impact

Hey, starting a few days ago Wikipedia started displaying an odd font (kind of looks like a skinny Impact font, maybe Steelfish?).

This only occurs in IE8 and I haven't customized my font settings in IE at all, it's all factory default, UTF-8, etc.

You may have inadvertently zoomed in or out on the text. This is a very common problem. In most browsers, you can adjust text sizes by scrolling in or out with the mousewheel while also pressing the Ctrl button. You can also adjust zoom settings by clicking on the 'Page' dropdown menu on the tab bar and selecting 'Text size'.-- Obsidin Soul 18:11, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What do you do when someone writes something like this on your talk page?

"What is your story? Are you attempting to cover up all the misdeeds of those who you worship because they were born into more wealth than you? What is it with your edits that are a blatant and vain attempt to hinder the free flow of information? Why are you assisting in suppressing legitimate information and repressing free speech? Why do you have love for bigots who unintentionally reveal themselves when writing without oversight or editorial control of the publication they are writing for? Image file problem

While reading Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group, I came across this image file. It looked weird because the caption represented the image to be a map of Vietnam, but the image itself was of a man sitting at a table. Clicking on the image, I found that the map existed in the history of the image, but it looks like another editor recently (in July) uploaded this image of a man to the same filename without first checking to see if it was in use in other articles. I could just revert the file back to the original image, but this new image is now being used in a separate article and that would cause the reverse of the problem that I originally noted (i.e. an image of a map in an article where it doesn't belong with the caption representing it to be a person). Is there a way to restore the original image to this filename while also allowing the new image to stay in its current article, United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs. Obviously, all of the licensing info is wrong on the file currently because it is the licensing information for the map and not the photograph of the man. I have no idea how to do this because I usually only revert vandalism. Thanks. Chillllls (talk) 20:26, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Seeing as it was seemingly uploaded without any licensing information - I have reverted it and removed it from the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs article. If that image is usable it should be uploaded under a new name, we shouldn't use the image at all without knowing where it came from or who owns the copyright, if any. Fixing a repair to an article that wasn't done quite right

Resolved
     – Section restored.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:57, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism to WP:REFSTART occurred here and the personal attack was deleted [2] but the entire "Information to include" section that had been overwritten by the attack never got put back in.

The directions don't quite make sense without the missing section. (Later text refers to it.)

Can I just copy & paste it back in with an edit summary explanation? Or is the fix more complicated? I can't just revert because valid edits have been done in the meantime. Cloveapple (talk) 22:34, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've just joined as an editor, although I have been reading the Wikipedia for some time now. To start contributing, which tasks would be the most appropriate? Cognitio ipsum (talk) 23:36, 9 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'll suggest a couple things you might start on but don't feel limited to them.
• Do light editing on articles. For example you could do searches for common typos and fix them. (Though be careful since some stuff that looks like typos might be a style of English you aren't familiar with.) Or you could look at articles that need more links to other articles and add internal links to some of these articles. WP:CHEAT shows how to add links and do other markup. Once you've added links to an article, you can remove the note saying the article needs to be "wikified."
Cloveapple (talk) 05:07, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Also, check out Tasks. You might benefit from going through the Wikipedia:Tutorial before getting started.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:02, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you both for the tips. That's certainly enough material to get started. Cognitio ipsum (talk) 21:43, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for template documentation

I ran across this template in an article:

which displays this:

Template:Unencyclopedic

So I decided to look at the documentation to see if there are any other parameters other than "date=".

I searched for it using these search terms:

Unencyclopedic

Wikipedia:Unencyclopedic

Template:Unencyclopedic

Unencyclopedic

None of which brought me to the documentation for the Unencyclopedic template.

I even looked in http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:AllPages&namespace=10 -- No luck.

Two questions: first, where is the documentation for this specific template? Second, what is the correct syntax for searching that will find anything with "" around it? --Guy Macon (talk) 03:05, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unencyclopedic is a redirect, the actual template is at Template:NOT. Besides the "date" parameter, it also accepts the argument "section", which if included will change the text from "this article" to "this section". --Jayron32 03:10, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Template:Unencyclopedic was the correct search term. It takes you to Template:NOT but at the top it says "(Redirected from Template:Unencyclopedic)" if you came from there. If you click the Edit tab at top of a page then the bottom of the window will show links to all transcluded pages such as templates. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:00, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I have said my peace, now how do I send this?

At the top of the article is a line that reads ""Sweet" redirects here. For other uses, see Sweet (disambiguation). Click the blue words that say Sweet (disambiguation). That should help you find what you want. --Jayron32 03:23, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, follow the link - we have an article, complete with glam-rock band photo, history of the band, and link to Sweet discography, which in turn brings back some old memories: "Wig-Wam Bam" etc... AndyTheGrump (talk) 03:28, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
You have sent it to the right place. Here are three ways to find the article you wanted via the search box:
1) Enter Sweet in the search box, click "For other uses, see Sweet (disambiguation)", and then Sweet (band).
2) Write "Sweet" in the search box but instead of pressing enter, click on Sweet (band) in the dropdown box below the search box.
3) Write "Sweet" in the search box but instead of pressing enter, click on "containing... Sweet" at the bottom of the dropdown box, and then click on Sweet (band) in the search results.

Wikipedia policies/rules/regulations

With Wikipedia:Ignore all rules claiming that there are rules and it stating elsewhere that there arent any rules, its confusing. A simpler way would be to have only 3 rules:

1. If a policy prevents you from improving/maintaining Wikipedia, ignore it. Like WP:IAR, but changed to Wikipedia:Ignore all policies.
2. Do not disrupt Wikipedia to illustrate a point.
3. Wikipedia is for the readers, not the editors.

Fixing common errors

Resolved

Hi. I'm aware that AutoWikiBrowser/General fixes cleverly fixes common MOS-related errors.

I also imagine individual editors use AWB to fix their 'pet hates'.

But is there a place - similar to AutoWikiBrowser/General fixes - where one could add fixes to common grammatical faults, such that one can let AWB fix the errors as it goes, without further intervention by an individual editor? Thanks, Trafford09 (talk) 09:18, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AWB users can fix many typos and a few grammar errors by turning on a typo-fixing option which is configured at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Typos. You can make suggestions at the talk page. You can also add to the list at Wikipedia:Lists of common misspellings/Grammar and Misc.
AWB users are required to check the proposed spelling fixes before saving; typo and grammar fixing is too subtle to be done blindly. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:29, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Moving section

How do you move a section and ensure that it's copyright status is okay? If I recall correctly you can't just copy/paste but more is required. I would like to move the Sea_turtle#Cladogram section into the article Cheloniidae whre it makes logical sense too be. Regards, SunCreator (talk) 13:20, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct, you must provide proper attribution when copying material from one article to another. Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia#Proper attribution contains an explanation on how to do this. Toshio Yamaguchi (talk) 13:43, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) What you are doing is a merge of content from one article to another. See Help:Merging. The important part is that anyone looking at the page histories be able to follow where the content was merged to in the former, and merged from in the latter. So, upon you removal from Sea turtle, your edit summary should state what you are doing with a wikilink to the merge target, e.g., Removed section on Cladogram; merging to Cheloniidae where I think it is a better fit and when you add the section to Cheloniidae, Merged content on Cladogram from Sea turtle. Looking at Toshio's response above and rereading your question, I'm not clear whether you are removing the content or just copying it across, but you'll see it's the same in essence: noting where the content came from with a link so that there's clear attribution.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:47, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Web services

The "Don't Pay Me Anything Unless You Like It" demanded $500 up-front. His work justified that. Problem is, it wasn't his work.

Consider a caution at the top of the section, "WARNING: those offering services may not be local, investigate references thoroughly."

Suggestion for Simplification

It would be nice if every wikipedia article had a section at the beginning which would give a short one or two sentence description of the definition of a complex thing in very simplistic language. So simple that even a complete novice could have some general idea what the object or thing being defined was. For example this article defines UEFI:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Firmware_Interface

Perhaps a note at the top that said "This is a piece of hardware that allows a computer's operating system to talk to the rest of the computer's hardware.

86.174.58.17 (talk) 15:41, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
Notice that some of the words in that first sentence are blue links to other Wikipedia articles. If a particular reader doesn't understand what the terms mean, a click or two will jump to the page where it is defined. If you register an account you can enable navigation popups in your preferences; with that turned on you will be able to see the first sentence of each linked article just by hovering over the blue link.
That said, there are doubtless many articles here where the first sentences don't give a good introduction. If you find examples, you would be welcome to improve them yourself or to tag them with Context so that other editors are made aware of the problem. -- John of Reading (talk) 16:33, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Maren Jensen

I represent Maren Jensen for over 30 years now. She did not pose for Playboy Magazine or ever shoot a possible story or photos for Playboy. Whomever has added this entry is marketing for Playboy or has malicious intent. Please remove this content otherwise legal action will be sought pursued toward the author of the content.

Thank you, Tom Hahn — Preceding unsigned comment added by Toptom27 (talkcontribs) 17:04, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the sentence, as it was unsourced. Looking into the article history, there was a source cited for this at one time, but I doubt very much that it could be considered in any way 'reliable'. If you represent Jensen, you should probably read WP:COI before making any edits to the article yourself, though removal of unsourced negative content like this is probably acceptable. We cannot of cours prevent you taking legal action, but I suggest that you read WP:NLT too. If you need to raise such matters again, our Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard is probably a better place to do so - it is likely to get dealt with more quickly. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:21, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, looking at the 'source' cited, it referenced Wikipedia in turn, so obviously wasn't the originator of this rumour. AndyTheGrump (talk) 17:29, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The unsourced claims were originally added by a user only identified by their IP address. Thank you for notifying us of the problem. Wikipedia:No legal threats is a policy against making legal threats in public at Wikipedia. Wikipedia:Contact us/Article problem/Factual error (from subject) has a mail address you can use if you want to express legal concerns. The page says: "If you have specific legal concerns about the article, then please put Legal concerns in the subject line. Please note that this may delay response, as we may have to involve legal staff." But mails with legal threats are not required to get vandalism about living people removed. I will watch the article to check the vandalism isn't readded. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:37, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What edit summary should I use here?

I want to undo this addition. I wouldn't call it vandalism, but what should I then use for the edit summary? --Mortense (talk) 21:40, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Just specify why you remove something so that other users understand it. In this case one example edit summary might be "remove as unsourced", since negative information about a living person has to be sourced. Regards SoWhy 21:53, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Rating Web Pages

Antisemitism and the New Testament (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Why doesn't the ratings section on the bottom of the page show other choices other than: Trustworthy, Objective, Complete and Well-written? Why isn't there choice like completely wrong, and other choices the show the ignorance of what was written. A prime example of this is the page titled: "Antisemitism and the New Testament", whoever wrote this propaganda had to have been deliberately trying to deceive people. It is written like Matthew, Mark and all the others were writing things against the Jewish people which is not anywhere near the truth. The anti-semitism in areas where the words that the Apostles wrote was changed at later dates to cause justification of anti-semitism, the only ones at the times they were changed were the only ones that was actually in "control" of the New Covenant books which was the catholic church (which is beside this point).

Also: "Thus, the term "Jews" in the Gospel represents those who deny the resurrection and believe that the disciples stole Jesus's corpse". This is a statement that only an anti-semite would make up. The term "Jews" solely indicated that the "Jewish" people that were left in the land of Israel were from the tribe of Judah. This is the ONLY recognized description of the term "Jews". — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.199.59.86 (talk) 23:36, 10 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, My name is Allen Stiritz, and I was the drummer for LA's wasted youth. I live in Germany now and have a family. I visit my family in America at least once a year, and this year(2011) I had an occasion to re-unite with my former band members while viisiting in America, and also played a set at a club in Canoga Park with some members of Bad Religion and Circle One. It was during this time that my Brother decided to look us up on your website. The first thing I noticed was that you listed me as the replacement drummer for someone called "Eric The Viking".I can tell you that this is not the case. I was not only the original drummer for La'S Wasted Youth, I was also in our predescessor band called "The Runs".There never was a person called "Eric the Viking" involved in LA's wasted Youth before the album "Reagans In".

To the best of my recollection I was in a band called The Runs and the members were Dave Mitchell(Singer) Sean Green(Bass Player) Chet Lehrer(Guitarist) and myself Allen Stiritz(drummer). When this band broke up we re-formed as LA'S Wasted Youth with Daniel Spira(Singer), Jeff Long(Bass Player), Chet Lehrer(Guitarist) and myself (as drummer). There was never an "Eric The Viking". We Recorded Reagans In and went back in to the studio to do Get Out of my yard. At which time we essentially broke up. Chet Lehrer, being the only original member to carry on with the LA's wasted Youth name, found several different musicians to complete the studio album Get Out of My yard. Any incarnations of the band after that had nothing to do with me, and even though I know alot about that, I still have no idea whpo this Viking person is. I am very much interested in your statement that "the Lawsuit was decided in favor of SDA Kinship" in using "Seventh-day Adventist", a trademark registered by the incorporation of General Conference of SDAs.

Can you inform me the federal lawsuit filed by the Adventist Church against SDA Kinship in the U.S. District Court in Los Angeles, California?

Besides, may I see the official verdict of the District Court mentioned above to know religious liberty for an organization like SDA Kinship in the USA.

Link.
I have found additional material on this here and there's a Chicago Tribune story here for a fee.

If you look at the bottom of http://www.advocate.com/Contact/ you'll see how to get a subscription to their microfilm archives. That would likely allow you to view the story that's used as a reference in the article, here.

If that's not good enough, and you want source material, all federal lawsuit documents that were docketed (that aren't sealed or archived because of age) can be obtained from PACER once you sign up, and it is quite cheap (.08¢ per page): this would be the relevant PACER site to obtain the records, but unfortunately, being from 1987 means it's very likely archived. Nevertheless here's the place to register a PACER account.

Even if archived, you can still get copies of the documents but you will have to get them from the U.S. National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) (see here). It's quite expensive unless you do it in person and quite a pain in the ass either way. This is rather specialized material but you could try asking if anyone can provide a copy at WP:RX; I wouldn't hold me breath.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:16, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to edit a Digital SLR page

Yesterday I started editing the EOS 10D page, and it raised a couple of questions:

Is there a template available on how to structure a digital SLR page? For example, on the Canon EOS 40D page, there is a lot of overlap between the infobox and the Features topic. On the 10D page, the Features topic is almost empty, but should I really repeat all the information from the infobox?

In the improvements/changes topic, how much information should I provide? The 10D incorporated a lot of changes, but some were quite small, like the increase of the burst buffer from 8 to 9 images, or the inclusion of a "safety shift" in Av/Tv.

Arumes (talk) 10:39, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I am sorry I can't answer your questions but here are some places where you might get some answers. Specific questions about the future of an article should be discussed on the article's talk page, Talk:Canon EOS 10D. The editors that watch that page have a better understanding of the article. The best place to discuss questions about photography articles in general is on the photography wikiproject talk page, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Photography. 1. Why is there an AfD on this page?

1. Because an editor felt the article should be deleted and they nominated it for deletion. An AFD runs for 7 days, that AFD was started on 8 September so it should be closed on 15 September. Right now the discussion is looking like it will be kept.
2. Who knows, one time this might be quicker if someone is currently watching it at other times the helpme template might be quicker. It all depends on the question and who is available at the time. GB fan please review my editing 12:22, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Using Wikipedia as a word processor - or how to teach MS Word to work like Wikipedia

I wish I could write all my documents on WP. I am currently a university student and when I write assignments using MS Word I constantly have to remind myself "Three equal signs don't make a subheading here!" and even more I wish I could use WP's cite templates. I really miss the convenience of having a Table of Contents and Refrences section created by Wikimagic! Short of downloading and installing Wikimedia on my notebook (I'm not a software expert), is there a way I can use Wikipedia as my word processor? Roger (talk) 13:33, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Can I get some attention here please. Roger (talk) 19:12, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Be patient, its only been a few hours. I personally would say thats its not appropriate for you to use your sandbox for non-wikipedia purposes, wikipedia is not a webhost, I'm not sure how it works but you could try downloading the MediaWiki software, or perhaps ask the folks over at WP:VPT if they know of anything that could help--Jac16888 Talk 19:18, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
If this does not plausibly lead to improvement of wikipedia as an encyclopedia, the answer is a pretty clear "no, this use of userspace is against the rules." A WP:USERPAGE is for experimentation, but ultimately only for WP-centric work, not to use our resources as a free cloud-computer/webhost for unrelated projects. You may also run into problems of academic integrity, since the instant you post it here, you are allowing anyone else to use it for any purpose. Teachers often forbid that type of sharing and reuse of tasks written for an academic assignment. DMacks (talk) 19:22, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of Wikipedians who have their own "personal wikis" on other wiki-hosting sites which run MediaWiki. This shouldn't be difficult to find. Importing the citation templates, if you need them, would mean complete functionality. sonia21:14, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
MS Word can automatically create and format a table of contents, provided you define the section headers as such. A Google search for "ms word table of contents" throws up a number of guides. I'm also looking for a reference formatting tool (short of coughing up for Endnote) though, so I can't help there. Brammers (talk/c) 17:36, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Not unusually, the editor is not aware that they cannot just copy and paste material from their website without sorting out the copyright issues, even though it is their website. I've reverted to the pre-COI version because of the copyvio (and removed a full list of faculty as inappropriate). Dougweller (talk) 16:29, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I revived the faculty section from prior to Kplynchpk's edits (was blue wikilinks not full directory of extlinks). No objection to removing it (or making it prose and highlighting their wider notability along with (or instead of) their Brown-centric roles), but may as well start that discussion from something viable at least. References - Ossett Wikipedia

Ossett (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Can you help please?

I've tried already to correct an incorrect lin to my Ossett history web page which is INCORRECT in the Ossett wikipedia listing.

It is now: www.ossett.net

I somehow managed to correct it some time ago, but I see it is now reverted to the old incorrect larkshill.org.uk web page which doesn't exist.

Could someone in authority correct this please? I am the author of the web site so I think I'm qualified.

Sorry, but these days I can't follow how to do things in Wikipedia - it is just too complicated and too controversial to add anything so I don't any more.

I tried to find how to amend or alter the REFLIST which is hidden from normal edits but gave up in the end as I couldn't find out how to make the change. Having struggled through this once before in an effort to maintain accuracy, I simply gave up today. Life is just too short and if Wikipedia wish to publicise out-of-date links that's not my problem.

Also the entry for Ben Levene in Ossett People is total garbage and has been there for years. Whoever put this stupid entry there must be laughing. I'm surprised that it hasn't been flagged for inaccuracy.

Sadly, it is things like this that spoil Wikipedia, which I find a useful if unreliable source.

Thanks

Why I cannot hear pronunciation - How to set laptop speakers to hear pronunciation

Dear WikiPedia Specialists,

When I click on the speaker icon, I cannot hear pronunciation of the word I am interested in.

I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on an HP laptop. My speaker is set to the highest volume, and I can clearly hear Windows "bongs" as well as have audio sessions in, eg Skype, MSN....

A speaker symbol like at Muammar Gaddafi can both indicate audio (the first speaker) and a written pronunciation (the second speaker). Some articles will only have one of them. For audio you should either hear sound (with the proper software and hardware) or be taken to a file page like File:Ar-Muammar al-Qaddafi.ogg where you can play the sound. See Wikipedia:Media help. You can find instructions at WP:MOVE, but please be aware that you need to find more sources to satisfy WP:GNG and/or WP:ENT. All 3 sources currently used just mention the actress in passing, and are not enough to establish notability.
Also, I have just moved the page to User:Bridpart2000/Sarah Bedi, as the previous move was moved to a name with a \ slash, rather than an actual subpage. Яehevkor 22:49, 11 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

BOOK Creation & Usage

Started a book, added several pages, edited it on the book edit page (changed order, etc.), but book was only preserved over log out / log in for the first page / chapter created; lost all updates.

Book block also did not display at top of pages when logging back in after having logged out with active books for my account. Had to start book creator all over again, and it then started a whole new book, instead of adding the page I was on to my current book.

Book feature seems very hard to use. When a user logs in, they should be able to go to their account page (by clicking on their user name at top of pages) and thereon have links to their book(s).

In this whole process, I did finally get a popup dialog box asking me if I wanted to delete current books and start all over, or continue with current book -- I selected continue with current book, but it started a new one anyhow.

Finally got to my first book, but as said in first parragraph, most of the updates via the edit page were gone.

Help with images

Dear Wiki Administrators,

On behalf of the ICMPD, I added the following 2 images to the ICMPD Wikipedia article:

• ICMPD Organisational structure.jpg • File:ICMPD_member_states_2011.jpg

Both of these were deleted with the reason given that they violated copyright laws. However, these 2 images are owned by the ICMPD and thus, there is no copyright violoation. ICMPD would appreciate it if these were not deleted again from the ICMPD article. All other international organizations like the UN, IAEA, etc. have such images in their Wikipedia articles as well.

Best regards,

Amy Nichols Communications Consultant ICMPD — Preceding unsigned comment added by Comm Department (talkcontribs) 12:43, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There are links provided on the article page to tell you how to address copyright problems, and also see WP:CP. You also need to read WP:COI, if you are editing a page connected with an organisation for which you work, and WP:CORPNAME as you have a user name representing a department, rather than an individual. - David Biddulph (talk) 12:50, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Arumuga Navalar wiki violates academic honesty and suppresses facts

MAdam/sir

you are displaying hindu nationalist propaganda in Sri Lanka which is oppressive to the Christians who are already marginalized in Sri Lanka by the Hindus and Budhists. Everytime ascholarcorrects your biased, fiction article on Arumuga Navalar it is immediately deleted. As aresult my students and even Internationalscholars repeat the propaganda without studying the actual sources from the 19th centurey which are also available atJaffna College,CentralCollegeandChurchArchivesinEnglandandtheUS> Please help. This is tarnishing wiki'scredibility amongSriLankanChristians.

Urgrnt action needed please

You can discuss this with other contributors on the article's talk page. They are probably more knowledgeable on the subject than I am, and I get the impression they are familiar with the relevant Wikipedia guidelines and policies which help build this encyclopedia. Creating a consonant sound file

I recorded the pronunciation of a certain consonant (Voiceless labiodental plosive) and uploaded the file to Commons I know that the consonant's page should somehow automatically detect the sound file and add it to the infobox, but it doesn't, so obviously I did something wrong. TFighterPilot (talk) 15:28, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

No, it was just that the software wasn't clever enough to realise that the article needed to be re-cached. I have purged the page and the sound file is now showing for me. You may also need to bypass your browser cache to see the change. -- John of Reading (talk) 15:34, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ho, thanks. It does show now. :D TFighterPilot (talk) 15:50, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
However, it still doesn't show in consonant TFighterPilot (talk) 15:53, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I've purged that page too. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:00, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

List of buses

Anyone want to edit List of buses?--213.107.74.132 (talk) 15:59, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The inuse has been rm, so you may edit. Why has it still got an Afd? Help! I'm worried it will go! --213.107.74.132 (talk) 15:59, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

AFDs run for 7 days. This one has been listed for 4 days. You don't need to worry about it. At this point it would take quite a few editors coming in with solid policy reasons to have the decision end up as delete. I do not think that is going to happen. If you are talking about the question, "Anyone want to edit List of buses?" in your edit summary about no one answering your first question, my answer is No I do not want to edit it. GB fan 16:33, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Vanessa_Grant article link error

hello

I am the Vanessa Grant written about on the Vanessa_Grant topic. I have altered the website address in the article's content (below the biography section). However, I can't find a way to change the website given in the summary box that appears on the upper right of the page. The website showing there (vgrant.com) is not correct. This should be changed to http://vanessagrant.com. You can verify that this is the correct web address by going to the vanessagrant.com address and seeing that the books listed there are the same ones listed under the wiki article.

Thank you for your assistance in correcting this error

Vanessa Grant — Preceding unsigned comment added by Vanessagrant (talkcontribs) 16:04, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed. I'll also leave you a note on your talk page explaining some of our rules and guidelines. TNXMan 16:06, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Multiple Issues

The Wikipedia page about the "Las Vegas Redevelopment Agency" was flagged at the top of the page with a box reading: "This article has multiple issues. Please help improve it or discuss these issues on the talk page." I believe most of the problems have been handled now. How do you go about having that "warning" box removed from the page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Junevivalasvegas (talkcontribs) 16:15, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please remove this at the top of the article:
Hope it helps.--213.107.74.132 (talk) 16:40, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I went ahead an removed the references needed and I added so wikilinks to help with wikify, so hopefully someone else will remove that issue. I think that the orphan status still applies. I only see one normal page that links there...Naraht (talk) 16:45, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Internet

How do I get my Wikipedia aticle published to the Internet?? To be viewed on the Internet??? I can not find any help or direction to do this. How do I format the page to look like the other articles on the WEB??? Or do you do this through your reveiw process?? I wish to type in the name of my article on the search engine and want to see it come up under the Wikipedia info. How is this ALL done. Very, Very frustrated!!!!! Answer: If you wait a few days, it will be on search engines.--213.107.74.132 (talk) 16:43, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

You have not moved the article you created in your userspace to the main article space. Only articles in the main space will be picked up by search engines. The page you have created still needs work. You should read our information on notability (which is required for articles) and reliable sourcing. TNXMan 16:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)The correct answer is that you haven't yet produced an article. All you had done is add content to your user page. I have moved that to a subpage in your user space. You will need to read WP:SYMUD, but also WP:1st, and various links from those. The article needs a lot of improvement before moving to mainspace. - David Biddulph (talk) 16:56, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How Do Subpages Work

A subpage (I think it was a subpage) that I created recently called User:Dolphinholme test was deleted 'speedily'. Why was this? Are the subpages I create viewable by everyone and if so, do they need to go through my user page to see it? The reason I ask this is that obviously I don't want my ungrammatical testing of stuff to appear in the search engine. Can I create individual subpages to test out different articles I am thinking of writing (e.g. Dolphinholme, a small village in NW England) or should that be done in my Sandbox? Thanks. Paddy1066 (talk) 18:31, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

It was an error in syntax. To create the subpage, it needs to be located at User:Paddy1066/SUBPAGE with the word subpage replaced by whatever you want it to be. The two attempts you made at creating the subpage were located in the wrong namespaces. I will restore the last of these and move it to the proper location. Gimme a sec. --Jayron32 18:38, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Your work has been restored and moved to the proper location, which is User:Paddy1066/Dolphineholme test. Good luck! --Jayron32 18:43, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Paddy1066 (talk) 18:48, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Everybody can see any saved page which hasn't been deleted, but if you place NOINDEX on a userspace page then it will not be indexed by Google and other search engines respecting the noindex tag. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:32, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How do I locate that tool with my edit stats? I had it bookmarked but deleted it by mistake. Thanks. Malke 2010 (talk) 19:08, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Referencing information released under a UK Freedom Of Information act request.

Hi, I've recently had an MoD FOI request answered. I like to reference the information in an article. I have a few questions:

• How? Do the MoD host their answered requests on a website? If not, how would I reference this?
• Some photos have also been released, does Wikipedia still treat these as UK crown copyright.

If possible I'd like to communicate via e-mail please. Thankyou for your time. Ryan4314 (talk) 22:47, 12 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
