Could someone please check if this article contains WP:OP? It's Giovanni di Giovanni. I actually tried to re-write it, but the possibilities are limited, since article mostly depents on one reference (an Oxford University Press book). Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

Why do my edits/external links disappear?

I'm just beginning to add information to wikipedia. But the external links that I add disappear after a few hours. I'm not sure why they are being taken down or by whom. For instance, under the listing for Robert Creeley (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_Creeley), I added an external link to a review of his book Life & Death that was published in The Boston Review (http://bostonreview.net/BR23.5/Gander.html). My external link appears for a few hours and then disappears. Same thing happens with an external link to a review published in The Nation (http://forrestgander.com/roberto%20bolano/index.html) that I added to Roberto Bolano (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roberto_Bolano). These are informational reviews published in renowned journals. What am I getting wrong? Thanks for any advice. 01:10, 7 August 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Forthgone (talkcontribs)

I looked at the history for Robert Creeley and your edits were removed by Spanglej (talk · contribs) with an edit summary of "rv personal website. Please read WP:EL" You should discuss with them why they removed the links. They also removed the links on Roberto Bolaño. GB fan 01:46, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

AWB help

How do you make AWB update your signature? Thanks, TBrandley 01:45, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In File:Wikify tag removal by Auto Wiki Browser.png notice that the bottom is split into three sections. The middle section has a dropdown menu that says summary at the top. In this image it says clean up and/or fixing typos. You can choose one of the default messages or type in your own. Ryan Vesey 01:50, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disappearing Box-with-an-Arrow

Look at these two examples of sentences with external links:

For the sentence in question, I found substitutes, based on a great new source that I discovered -- BPC's "Indefensible" white paper here.

For the sentence in question, I found a series of substitutes, based on a great new source that I discovered -- BPC's "Indefensible" white paper here.

On my monitor and browser (IE 8.0.6001.18702), the first sentence ends with a "box-with-an-arrow" diagram and the second one does not. (If what you see if different, read further.) The box is replaced on the second sentence with spaces between the word "here" and the period. This is only for full-screen on a somewhat old (read small) monitor at 100% zoom. If I shrink the page horizontally or increase the zoom factor, the box-with-an-arrow on the first sentence disappears as well.

Both have the same external link, consisting of a left-square-bracket, the URL preceded by an http-colon, one space, the explanatory text and a right-square-bracket. The only difference between the two sentences is the words "a series of". Apparently, the explanatory text must fit on one display line. (If you have too large a monitor, try shrinking the page by pulling the right side closer to the left until the second sentence, but not the first, occupies two lines.)

The real trouble is that this also happens in a citation, such as:

Task Force on Defense Budget and Strategy (June 7, 2012). "Indefensible: The Sequester's Mechanics and Adverse Effects on National and Economic Security". Bipartisan Policy Center. pp. 5, 25. Retrieved August 5, 2012.

The box-with-an-arrow is missing between Economic Security and Bipartisan. Again, on my monitor, full-screen, 100% zoom.

Can you think of anything that would avoid having the box disappear, at least for certain display widths? (And, by the way, what is the official name of the box-with-an-arrow?) --RoyGoldsmith (talk) 02:50, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It's called external link icon. See Help:External link icons. I have heard of this browser issue before but don't know a fix. I see the icon in IE9 but it disappears when I choose compatibility view [1] in IE9. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:02, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Production

How do you think Production information for episodes of television? Thanks! TBrandley 02:59, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Could you clarify please. Your question seems like a sentence fragment to me. Dismas|(talk) 03:04, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, for Game Day (Awake), my article, I am interesting in finding more information for the "Production" section. For this show, since there is no DVD commentary, etc, its hard to find other than a few sentences, and am requesting help for this. Thanks! TBrandley 03:25, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It may be that there are simply no reliable sources for this information. If so, then the information may not appear in Wikipedia. --ColinFine (talk) 19:39, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Categories "Art genres" vs "Art movements"

I was looking for Surrealism under Art genres (which I arrived at by typing WIKI ART CATEGORIES in a search engine) and couldn't find it (but it is under the category Art movements.) I'm just a bit puzzled about the distinction and wonder if these categories should be merged, or at least if there could be some sort of hatnote at the top explaining what the category covers, and suggesting the visitor might instead want to check the other category. Tetsuo (talk) 05:04, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a see also link to Category:Art movements near the top of Category:Art genres. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:52, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I haven't heard of MeSH before but it appears to be an issue with Infobox disease. I examined the source code of the infobox. You can add the undocumented parameter MeshYear = 2012 as I did in the second infobox to the right where the MeSH link works. The default year in the infobox is 2011. I don't know whether the default should be changed to 2012. Is there a reason for 2011 or is it just missing a yearly update? PrimeHunter (talk) 10:34, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Apologies for asking what is probably a simple query. I recently submitted an article to be reviewed but now when i log in and click on My Contributions the most recent changes are not listed. I would be grateful for some guidance as to where to find the article so I can make any neccessary alterations. The article is titled Clive Beer and the account is Rscurlock-Jones. Thank you for your help.

User:Rscurlock-Jones created a page at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Clive Beer and submitted it for review six times. It was declined each time and the page was eventually deleted at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/Clive Beer. The last five declines were with the npov parameter at . It seems time to let it rest. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for notifying me that the article I have drafted has been deleted. I do understand the comments made as to why the article was deleted, however i would be grateful if the article could be made available again so it can be fully edited and improved to meet the neccessary criteria. It is the first time I have attempted to release a Wikipedia entry and to date I may not have fully understood the feedback provided. If the above page could be made available once again, it would be much appreciated. Thank you very much.

Question about formatting references

Where would I post to ask a specific question about formatting references? In the article suffix tree ther are references of the form "([6] page 92)." Where it uses the same reference but then adds the particular page inline. I'm not sure if it would be better to change it. RJFJR (talk) 15:39, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The best way to do this is using the cite book template. Mdann52 (talk) 15:49, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I've asked at Help talk:Citation Style 1 and here, but I don't know if the former is right for this question or not. There's a template where you just cite the whole source normally, then you add the template after the places where you cite it, and it puts something like [Page 19] in superscript. I've never used it, though. Also, if that's the way it's cited throughout the entire article, you might want to get consensus for the change. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:06, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia XML data

Is it possible to get XML data from certain Wiki pages to keep other software up to date on things like world/country population? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 174.230.128.211 (talk) 16:25, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You might look at WP:XML. I'm not sure if that's exactly what you want or not (I'm stupid when it comes to this type of thing), but I figured I might as well post it. - Purplewowies (talk) 16:53, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Note that AFAIK there is no automatic mechanism to update such information in Wikipedia, so relying on it in other places may not be a good idea. --ColinFine (talk) 19:42, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I figured it out! I guess you can get XML data on world/country population from CIA WorldFactbook. Wiki rules. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 97.114.152.9 (talk) 23:40, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. FloBo A boat that can float! Question: Are you sure Ietsism is a better target than Spiritual but not religious or Religious pluralism for the latter two? BigNate37(T) 00:41, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well, yes, since the SBNR rejects the organized religion while ietsism does not and belief is different than spirituality (which is either religious (like prayer) or non-theistic (like meditation)). As for religious pluralism, it seems to be further philosophy of ecumenism (maybe like interfaith dialogue) and syncretism (like Baha'i Faith in Abrahamic clause), or belief beyond religion, but not without it. 217.65.192.104 (talk) 01:05, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm, your point that SBNR rejects organized religion seems to me to make it a more appropriate target for "belief without religion", whereas ietsism is more along the lines of "belief without specificity." I've included SBNR and ietsism in each other's See also sections, since they are related, so a reader would still be presented with both concepts in any event. BigNate37(T) 01:37, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Partly done: I have created the latter two as redirects from synonyms, directing them at spiritual but not religious rather than at ietsism. SBNR has 35 1.4 million google hits, whereas ietsism only has 11 thousand. The more common search term should take priority, where a term is applicable to both. I'll stick a hatnote on SBNR. If you disagree you may wish to raise the issue at redirects for discussion. BigNate37(T) 01:46, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

changing/uploading a photograph

I'd like to change a photograph on an article I maintain. I don't know how to upload a photo and then replace the existing photo! (I have tried the upload form but it doesn't seem to go anywhere once I fill it out) — Preceding unsigned comment added by PearlyG (talkcontribs) 22:08, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! What you do is just click on that picture in the article you maintain. It will show the page followed by a bunch of copyright information. Down near the bottom of the page, there will be a link that says "Upload a new version of this file". Click it, then you will be able to upload a new version. Hope that helps! :)

ChrisStyles (talk) 23:40, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I can't find any link - and someone else put the existing photo up, not me. It isn't a bad photo and is from a good event, but is there a way to upload a second photo and add it to the article? p..g.. — Preceding unsigned comment added by PearlyG (talkcontribs) 00:33, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That is only if you want to replace the photo with a new version. That's not how I read your request. You simply want to upload an additional photo and then replace the one that's in the article with the new one while leaving the original photo on our servers for use in other places.
What you need to do in this situation is go to WP:UPLOAD and upload your photo. Once done there, you would go to the article and find the place where the current image is used. If it's in an infobox, then it should look something like "image = SomeImage.jpg". Simply replace the SomeImage.jpg with the file name of your image that you've just uploaded. Provide an edit summary saying that you're replacing the image, save the article and you're done. Dismas|(talk) 01:34, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

That sounds very helpful, thank you. Is it ever acceptable to have two photos within an article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by PearlyG (talkcontribs) 01:36, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly. Without looking, I'm sure the article on Earth has many images. If it's justified and not just eye candy then that's fine. If the article is short and would actually be lengthened just by having another image, it's likely not worth it. And some articles even have a WP:GALLERY. But it should be justifiable. It should have a reason. So an article on, for example, Jennifer Aniston shouldn't have a gallery of her face again and again. Meanwhile an article on a precious gem might benefit from a gallery due to the gem coming in different colors and such. Dismas|(talk) 02:47, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

My image

Hi,

My image appears in the article on Margaret Thatcher and I am wondering if the picture could be removed. The image is here - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Lady_Thatcher_at_dinner_2008_crop.jpg. I discussed this on the talk page of the main article and managed to get the caption changed (it did say that Thatcher was "surrounded by Young Conservatives), but I was directed here to see if the picture could be removed. Five years ago my friend's parents, who are Conservative councillors, asked if I could help out at local council event. They knew that I was interested in politics and knew that I was a Labour supporter, but said that the event would be interesting whatever your political stripes. I got to the event and it was very Conservative, but it was still quite interesting to talk to people with different views. I didn't want to be rude so I helped out and poured drinks as agreed. The other helpers (I don't know if they were Young Conservatives) and I were fed, and then this picture was taken. Now, I am not and have never been a Conservative and could not have anticipated this photo finding its way onto Wikipedia. The whole experience was quite surreal and Mrs Tatcher was old and frail, and I think that it would have been very rude to make a fuss about not having my picture taken with her. Now, I am actually about to finish my masters and I'm interesting in getting a job in progressive politics, and I'm worried this might really obstruct my efforts. Mrs. Thatcher is a very controversial and divisive figure and I never actually consented to have my image associated with her on the internet in this way. I realise that you cannot totally manage your image on the internet and I recognise that wikipedia is a about sharing information - and I appreciate the great work that you do. But given that this photo adds nothing of great substance to the article, has not received the consent of those in it (my friend is also in it and I know that she has not consented for her image to be used in this way), and could have quite unfortunate consequences, do you think that it could be taken down? It could even be replaced by a far less controversial image by the some Author from the same source (I've checked and there is one).

Sorry to be a bother and thank you for your time. Ogwikitem (talk) 23:09, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I sympathise with your position - but that, unfortunately, is not a reason for removing the picture. However I also feel that the picture detracts from, rather than improving, the article, and am inclined to remove it (I am an admirer of her achievements). Just above it there is a picture of her aged 80, among eminent politicians, so we don't need another of her, aged 82, surrounded by anonymous teenagers. What do others think? Maproom (talk) 23:40, 7 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Well as for what consensus might be, the discussion has already been started on the talk page (see Talk:Margaret Thatcher#Incorrect and inappropriate photo). Ogwikitem was sent here to see what else could be done rather than to do some forum shopping; to that end, a look into dispute resolution might be advised (with the dispute resolution noticeboard being a likely next stop). However if Ogwikitem feels that this is a personality rights issue rather than a content dispute issue, s/he ought to contact WP:OTRS regarding the image itself (my advise is do not bother complaining about its use in the article but rather object to the image directly, as you are not the article's subject). I do not know how OTRS will view this matter, but I do know that they are rather prompt. BigNate37(T) 01:11, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jacob Michelson

Dear admin,

I need help on this URL. Jacob Michelson (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Jacob Michelson has been deleted by A7 with a post of No explanation of the subject's significance. I wanted to edit this name to Jacob Yasha Michelson and put him back on wikipedia with a post of everything he has done so far

Is this possible and what are the next steps I need to take?

He is the producer of Sonhos de Peixe (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Also a founder of a dance technique.

I do hope you can help me to put his name (edited) back on Wikipedia to put his name back on Wikipedia.

Thank you.

You can follow the step at Wikipedia:Deletion review. Dismas|(talk) 01:16, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Please see our notability policy, which explains what we mean by asserting subject significance. If you wish to dispute deletion of the article, Wikipedia:Deletion review is what you're after (as Dismas pointed out). To start over on a new article about the subject, you may wish to look into Wikipedia:Articles for creation. BigNate37(T) 01:17, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

New Page

I was wondering if you knew how to create a whole new page? If there isn't a button, that is. Like, for example, there are already about 4-5 pages on Wikipedia about Creature Feature, but there isn't a page about the band Creature Feature. I wanted to create a page about the band Creature Feature, but I don't see any buttons or anything to create a page about the band, not edit the page about the comic strip, or the TV Show, or the episode, or the movie. Can you help me out?— Preceding unsigned comment added by SweetandSadistic (talkcontribs)

You need the confirmed or autoconfirmed userright to create pages. If you do not wish to wait until you have fulfilled the requirements to be autoconfirmed, You may use articles for creation to start your new article. (I'm not sure if non-autoconfirmed users have their own sandbox, but if you see a "my sandbox" link along the top of your screen, you may start a draft article there, as well). Before you start your article, please have a look at WP:BAND and make sure that band is notable enough to support inclusion in Wikipedia. Good luck. BigNate37(T) 01:55, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
So it turns out that the userright requirement to create pages was removed... in 2007. Shows how long I've been hiding under my rock for. (Thanks, Fuhghettaboutit, for pointing this out to me.) To manually start a page about that band, search for Creature Feature (band) in the search bar, and click the red link if the search does not find a page for the band already (it will say "You may create the page 'Creature Feature (band)', but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered," that is where your red link will be). Adding (band) to the end of the title is our standard way to disambiguate between a band and other topics with the same name. You can also wikilink the term Creature Feature (band) and click that red link, or you can manually visit that page by editing the URL in your browser. BigNate37(T) 02:23, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Both WP:ACCOUNT and WP:CREATE say that you must be registered to create an article, so I'm not sure that that Signpost page is correct. RudolfRed (talk) 06:28, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Registered, yes, but they do not indicate requiring any specific userright, such as confirmed or autoconfirmed. BigNate37(T) 06:42, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The Signpost article says that the proposed change was to allow unregistered users to create accounts. That's what I was pointing out, but in a clumsy way. RudolfRed (talk) 15:59, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I get your meaning now. In hindsight it should have been obvious to me, what with "unregistered" right up there in the title. BigNate37(T) 16:19, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Because Wikipedia's rules have changed over time, and this BLP currently has no independent in-depth coverage that verifies the individuals's notability. Dru of Id (talk) 03:20, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The policies havent changed all that much. What more likely has happened is that during most of the article's existence, it lay hidden amongst the 3-4 million other articles and no one noticed that it was full of inappropriate content. -- The Red Pen of Doom 17:06, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I got a note immediately contesting my article to be deleted and I wanted to know what else I needed to do in regards to references validity etc. I would also like to add photographic process articles that have not been written yet, some related to my current article. I appreciate the feedback and help on my journey into editing. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Stirfriedpenguin (talkcontribs) 04:49, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like the reason the article was tagged was because the person does not seem to be notable. The general notability guideline states, Articles require significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. (simplified, taken from WP:42). So you need sources to assert notability. Examples of reliable sources include well-known newspapers like the New York Times, magazines or Web content with editorial oversight. One Ton Cup in English

I spent the whole day editing the One Ton Cup English web site yesterday. I translated the Existing French One Ton Cup website and put it on the English website which was initially very succinct. When I went to the English website this morning, everything had disappeared. Could you please tell me why?

It seems two editors have edited the article since you finished. Arctic Kangaroo restored content you had deleted, and then undid his own edit with the edit summary "deleted unnecessary content", then Pinethicket removed more with the edit summary "[remove] copy and paste, unsourced and without attribution". I'm not sure who, if either (or both) removed your translation. You might want to discuss the matter with them on their talk pages: Arctic Kangaroo's and Pinethicket's. FloBo A boat that can float! Editing my watchlist

I have been trying to edit my watchlist. When I click on "View and edit watchlist", I get a Wikipedia error page. When I click on "Edit raw watchlist", I get a blank page. I have nearly 24,000 pages on my watchlist, so that might have something to do with it. However, with that many pages, I don't remember all of them. If I did, I could type them in individually, and unwatch them that way. How can I rectify this error right now, and how can I prevent this in the future? Allen (Morriswa) (talk) 09:50, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It will take a long long time but you could start clicking on articles in your watchlist and clicking on the star at the top of the article to unwatch it. Dismas|(talk) 10:20, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You ask "how can I prevent this in the future?" Initially I assumed you might have accidentally set "My preferences" so every page you edit is added to your watchlist - but you have 9,900 edits and a watchlist of 24,000 - have you chosen to add all these articles to your watchlist? - Arjayay (talk) 18:03, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

He died at ahmednagar. There is a place called Alamgir 1 or 2 km away from Ahmednagar on Bhingar road. There is also a burial place where it is believed that Aurangzeb was buried. Finding the source of a formula image by LaTex

I'm writing a JavaScript code that allows to edit the LaTeX code of formulas by double-clicking them, and I was wondering if its possible to determine what's the source of a formula image just by knowing its LaTeX code. e.g. the source of is always http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/math/0/c/f/0cfae383362bc63d7ac429a5755fef05.png. What's the algorithm used to determine a formula's source? Is it available in JS, or at least executable via AJAX? (I was thinking about using other LaTeX rendering engines, such as codecoge's, but sometimes it doesn't give the same result as Wikipedia. It's a problem especially when the external rendering engine supports a command that Wikipedia doesn't or vice versa).

P.S. speaking of which, can you recommend any WYSIWYG online editor for LaTeX? (similar to bakoma-tex, but online, so I can integrate it in Wikipedia).

The articles about democratic politicians are probably unprotected because there has not been a big amount of vandalism from new and unregistered editors. MAJOR Wikipedia injustice

I really don't like to rant, but Wikipeida(ns) have did pretty much causing a big dissapointed in me. Namely, I started using Wikipedia several years ago, as an academic and private information source. Now, about a month ago, I decided I could really help Wikipedia by expanding it. A month ago, I totally reworked article Education in Serbia without any problems. When I got interested in Religion in Europe articles, that's where I got a "bump". Firstly, I strived to make the all (possible) Religion in Europe articles contain the bar boxes about their religiosity. The edit wars began. My edits were viewed as vandalism, unsourced and else. After I thought I really fixed this, I experienced Religion in Turkey and Saguamundi (talk · contribs). Nevertheless, Saguamundi offered no discussion and even requested full protection (which was indeed granted by admin Beeblebrox (talk · contribs)). I raised dispute several times here on the help desk and was redirected to dipute resolution noticeboard where discussion is going. [5] However, I still experience some problems with users even calling me incompetent. See [6] (statement) and [7] (my answer). On dispute resolution noticeboard, I was even accused of supporting 'KONDA agenda', even though it's clearly opposite. Not to mention [8]. What should I do to fix this MAJOR Wikipeida injustice (coming from all directions). I can't leave you just now. I still have some extremely good faith projects as Jubilee School (help its editor). PLEASE, HELP!!! 93.86.129.66 (talk) 18:58, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, my suggestions for Jubilee School would be, first, to mention what the medium of instruction is (i.e. what language the students are taught in - English, Arabic, French, or several of the above?) Secondly, introduce independent reliable sources - that is, sources that are not connected with the organisation itself. Third, try to ensure that more of the article's content is covered by inline citations to reliable sources.
My suggestions for your activities as an academic working on controversial topics on Wikipedia, would be to consider working on such topics in the language you are most familiar with. You can find Wikipedias in many different languages at http://www.wikipedia.org/ --Demiurge1000 (talk) 19:13, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I know nothing about Jubilee School. I just said that I'm currently working on helping the article's editor to update it. As for language, that's really not the question (enorm amount of typoes is because I'm agitated with Wikipedian injustice). As for religion (being controversal), I didn't use any original research - I merely just changed the way informations are written (see it at dispute resolution noticeboard), so I don't thing that's the problem. 93.86.129.66 (talk) 19:28, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you are referring to WP:HD#Redirection - Iestism and the related RfDs when you linked WP:RFD#August 8, then I assume that you are that same editor. In that case, that is hardly an injustice. I disagreed with you and asked for clarification, I made a judgment call based on (your?) clarification and some brief research, and civilly invited you to start a discussion at Redirects for Discussion if you still disagreed (which, if I'm correct in understanding that you are that same IP editor, you have). I wasn't trying to be dismissive: there are some wise editors at RfD who are very good at researching all the potential factors and implications of where redirects point. I know this because I frequent RfD and interact with them regularly. I have every confidence that together we can decide the best course of action. There is no rush, and if my decision was wrong, it will be corrected soon enough. BigNate37(T) 19:20, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
No!!! I didn't say that was the injustice, I just mentioned it as one of my activities. The real problem is in [9] (disriminatory statement) and [10] (my answer) and [11] (I would call it the problem without the real need). Those two are what I think of as injustices. For the first, regradless of my knowledge what vandalism is, the unreferenced pie charts should totally be removed (since referenced ones ARE available). For the second, injustices are great in number (you'd have to read the whole discussion so far). Please help, 93.86.129.66 (talk) 19:28, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, I see. In reply to your plea: I have read parts of the discussions you have been involved in. I chose only to respond to the redirect matter because that is all I felt qualified to weigh in on. I took another quick look at bits of that dispute, and it's hard to see exactly what is going on because your IP changes so often. While it is your prerogative to continue editing anonymously if you so choose, the burden on the rest of us to play detective when reviewing this sort of situation is discouraging. It is midday for me here, if I can make time this evening I will give your issue another look to see if there is anything I can contribute. From what I can tell right now, things are not simply black and white. BigNate37(T) 19:44, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, thank you BigNate37 so much. You're one of the most helpful (and most active) Wikipedians out there. Sadly, I can't do anything else (as an unregistered user) than to thank you. Don't forget that all my IP adresses (disluding those containing minor changes; those were from mobile phone) are written on dispute resolution noticeboard (full list of contribs is right of them). 93.86.129.66 (talk) 20:02, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Again, Gtwfan52 (talk · contribs) is practically threatening me [12]. Will someone, please, tell him not to do so and to fix the problem he has made (non-removal of unreferenced and disputed pie charts in Religion in Germany and Religion in the Netherlands; or anyone esle, since I, as an unregistered user can't). 93.86.129.66 (talk) 22:04, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why don't you register? It is not difficult, and (rightly or wrongly) people tend to show more respect to registered users. Most vandalism is done by unregistered users. Maproom (talk) 22:25, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You're soooo right about it. I think it's wrongly (not all IPs are vandals). It could be the cause of all my problems/injustices. Nevertheless, I manually reverted those. Still, Gtwfan52 (talk · contribs) has to be reported (or warned) for misconduct (threat and 'provocation' (he said "here's ya" on his comment for me)). 93.86.129.66 (talk) 22:29, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
While his response to your criticisms was inappropriately rude, Gtwfan52 hasn't seriously interfered with your ability to edit here (that I have seen). It's typically not our way to take punitive measures and my advice to you is to try to put it behind you. His comments about your edit summary were valid, and that's okay: you made a mistake, we all do, and Wikipedia is very transparent so that mistake drew attention. Because he only snapped at you after you criticized him, it's my impression that admonishment would be counter to the goal of deescalation, and that it would be better to leave it alone. nb. I am stepping away and will not reply promptly. BigNate37(T) 22:56, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I think you are misunderstanding Gtwfan52's intentions. He asked you not to post to his talk page again; maybe that was rude. But he ended his request, not with "here's ya" (which might be interpreted as impolite), but with "Thank you and here's to ya!". This is not threatening. I interpret it as meaning, he is raising a glass and drinking in your honour (though hoping he will not meet you again). Maproom (talk) 23:06, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Well, sorry in that case (said the same to Gtwfan52). That's exacly why metaphors (or whatever are these phrases called) are avoided on Wikipedia (for misunderstanding and non-native speakers). 109.93.149.214 (talk) 23:31, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I accept your apology. Now, Gtwfan52 has asked you not to post to his talk page. You have now posted your apology to his talk page. I can't speak for him, but I am guessing he would prefer you not to post there at all. It might be better if you deleted your posting there. Maproom (talk) 23:58, 8 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

We don't have an article called Tyler Thaxton. In all politeness, what are you talking about? FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 05:27, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There was an article at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tyler_Thaxton but it was deleted, not very long ago. Presumably, the OP saw it before it was deleted and had some concerns. I think only admins can see deleted pages, so I don't know what the exact problem was. RudolfRed (talk) 05:56, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
The article was deleted 2 hours after the request was filed. Unfortunately, that was 3 hours too early for me. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 12:59, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I saw the article in question, which was nominated as CSD A7 at the time. It seemed to be a 13-year-old singer biography with limited information. I certainly did not see an excessive amount of personal information compared to a typical biography stub. There was an unintelligible file link in the infobox as well, though after a quick peek I gathered that no image was ever uploaded. Suffice to say, this has been taken care of:
• 02:18, 9 August 2012 (UTC) Fuhghettaboutit deleted page Tyler Thaxton (A7: Article about a real person, which does not indicate the importance or significance of the subject)
So hopefully that clears up the confusion. Given the preceding, I'm going to mark this one as resolved. BigNate37(T) 15:50, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

No, I mean't there is a Infobox WikiProject, and I'm wondering if there is an Infobox task force, or something similar. TBrandley 16:15, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand the purpose. You can surely just include a simple infobox? You don't need to borrow the style, just use your own creativity. Regards.--Kürbis () 18:30, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure what you mean but I suspect you are using "Infobox" incorrectly. Please link to what you call "Infobox WikiProject" and then maybe we can guess what you want for task forces. The Infobox WikiProject is Wikipedia:WikiProject Infoboxes but I don't see how that relates to your posts. I wonder whether you are referring to WikiProject banners like WikiProject Television which has many task force parameters. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:56, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to use a first-letter-lowercase Username

MY CORRECT USERNAME IS ibicdlcod. Ibicdlcod (talk) 06:14, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have added the template lowercase title to your user and user talk page. This does not change what your actual user name is, but is does change the display of it at those two pages. Now go to your preferences, scroll down the the signature area on the first page that comes up, place the following code into the field next to Signature:
ibicdlcod (talk)

Now tick the box below that that says "Treat the above as wiki markup." Now, when you sign your name it will also display in lowercase. You cannot change your account name to actually begin with a lowercase letter because of a software restriction (the same is true of article titles). Cheers.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 06:27, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Go to your preferences and put the following in the custom signature box: ibicdlcod (talk) . Check the "treat above as wiki markup" box. This will make your signature display as this: ibicdlcod (talk). Add lowercase title to your user page and/or your talk page to lowercase your username in those titles. The name is capitalized as a limitation of the software. - Purplewowies (talk) 06:31, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Width of Infobox tennis biography template

I'd like to request an increase in the width of this template, something similar to the Golf equivalent (see Ellsworth Vines' page for both, and the difference in width between them) in order to hopefully prevent some of the actual field text on the left-hand side (e.g. 'career prize money', 'current ranking', 'australian open') from running over onto 2 lines. This happens on many players' pages, e.g. Roger Federer, Fred Stolle, John Isner and Jérôme Golmard, whereas the infoboxes presumably should look relatively clutter free/stay on one line ala David Nalbandian, Denis Istomin, Marat Safin and Alexander Popp. This would greatly improve the presentation of such pages and make the infoboxes more efficient and easier to read... would this be possible? I have posted this at WikiProject Tennis also. Thanks. Asmazif (talk) 12:35, 9 August 2012 (GMT)

I'm pretty sure it's because both ball and hoop span two columns. The table will sort by the very top columns. Those headers would need to be removed or incorporated into the columns below them. It's a shame since it makes the table less clear but there isn't any way round it that I know of and I've asked the same question myself before. Valenciano (talk) 12:38, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Unless you think people will want to be sorting by penalty points, you could maybe change it so that there's only one column for each discipline, with a heading such as Ball (score / penalty) and entries in the form "26.625 / xxxx". Deor (talk) 13:23, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CBS Morning Problem

In currently, CBS morning newscasts is called CBS This Morning, but I notice a problem. When I linked to CBS Morning or CBS Morning Show, it redirect to The Early Show, the former morning programme on CBS. And no pages have information of history of CBS morning shows in 1970s.--jcnJohn Chen (Talk-Contib.) RA 14:25, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If a redirect seems to be obviously better pointing somewhere else, you may edit its target yourself. For example when clicking on CBS Morning, you end up at The Early Show and right under where it says "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia", you should see "(Redirected from CBS Morning)". If you click the link in the "Redirected from..." line, it will take you directly to the redirect page which you may then edit and change the target. However you should first check the "What links here" page for any redirect you intend to change; if most of the incoming links mean The Early Show, then perhaps you should just add a hatnote to The Early Show. Something like , which produces "CBS Morning" and "CBS Morning Show" redirect here. For the other CBS morning show, see CBS This Morning." If you're not sure at all what to do, you're welcome to nominate the problematic redirects for discussion at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion, and more redirect savvy editors will take it from there. To summarize:
1. Check Special:WhatLinksHere/CBS Morning and Special:WhatLinksHere/CBS Morning Show. If you're certain CBS Morning and CBS Morning Show should point at CBS This Morning, go ahead and change them accordingly and fix any incoming links that should instead point at The Early Show.
2. If you see that there is a large majority of incoming links for those redirects that mean The Early Show, consider using the template to alert readers who were looking for CBS This Morning.
3. If you aren't comfortable making the decision, list the redirects for discussion at RfD. See WP:RFD#How to list a redirect for discussion.

Heroes Welcome UK

Hi, I just need a little clarification, some time ago Wikipedia suggested that I should try and link the Heroes Welcome Article to other relating and connecting wikipedia articles, and this is something I have been doing as and when an opportunity arises.(you can probably track these?) . Yesterday I added a section to the Mariah Mundi and the Midas Box article (it seemed the most appropriate way of adding the piece) headed inspiring communities. I believed this article to be very relevant bearing in mind the well reported association between the Mariah Mundi series of books and the Heroes Welcome story. I noticed this morning that this new section was removed by one of the originating writers who seem to go under the same name as the film production company. This action seems to go against the wikipedia principle, could you advice me? Many thanksFwe506 (talk) 14:45, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Sure! I've never looked into that area before though ;) benzband (talk) 14:58, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It's an area not many editors want to work in, because discussions about this can result in A LOT of heat :) To explain a bit more, the Wikimedia Foundation adopted a resolution that allows Wikimedia projects (including the English Wikipedia) to adopt a policy to use copyrighted material, such as images, under a claim of fair use. (No, you don't have to be a lawyer to work in that area :) ). This policy for the English Wikipedia is Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. There are LOTS of copyrighted images (generally called non-free images) which need to be reviewed for whether their use on Wikipedia is valid under fair use (actually under the non-free content criteria). We have WAAAY too few people working on this. Non-free files with suspicious fair use claims or other problems are discussed at non-free content review. There are some automatically generated reports that can detect some of the images and files with problems regarding the non-free content policy. I am one of only a handful of editors (I believe) working through these reports, identify the problems with a specific file / article and outline those problems for discussion at non-free content review. Then a consensus can be reached on whether a particular use of a file is appropriate or not. So if you are interested, just let me know. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:17, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I should also mention that this is a monotonous and practically never ending task and you won't get lots of barnstars or other shiny things for it. If you work there, there's always something to do. :) -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:29, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If that's not something you want to do, you can also take a look at Category:Wikipedia backlog. There are many other backlogs that also need attention. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:49, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I often do "monotonous and practically never ending task(s)". The way i deal with it is doing a bit of one, then switch to another for a bit, and so on (see my userpage for a list of things to do :D ). So i should find non-free files that are in violation of WP:NFCC and discuss them at NFCR? Where can i find the bot report to start my search? benzband (talk) 19:05, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are two reports. The first one is located at Wikipedia:Database reports/Non-free files missing a rationale and is generated by a bot which updates the report daily. The other one (which I am using) is run on the toolserver and can be found here. The toolserver report is not being updated very often, and some of the top violations have already been resolved. The latest use I reported to NFCR was 2008 Toyota/Save Mart 350. Everything below should still be unreported/unresolved as of this post. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 22:45, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I fixed it. When you want to edit a reference, you have to look where the reference number appears in the article text. In this case, it's after the second sentence between ref tags, looking like . You have to figure out, where the reference is located in the Wiki code and edit that part. It cannot be edited by editing the ==References== section. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:42, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict) If you are referring to the Hong Kong page here at the English Wikipedia, then the reason you cannot edit it is because it is protected by a mechanism called semi-protection. People editing under an IP cannot edit such pages, only people who are logged in and have an account that is autoconfirmed can edit such pages. Creating an account is free and provides some other benefits, but is not required as long as you don't want to edit semi-protected pages. Registering an account also provides some other benefits, which are outlined at Wikipedia:Why create an account?. If you don't want to register an account, you can propose the update at Talk:Hong Kong. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 15:59, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You will have to ask that at the Chinese Wikipedia Help Desk.--ukexpat (talk) 18:39, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
But if the Chinese WP uses the same mechanism for references as the English, the references are actually defined where they are used in the article, not in the References section. See WP:Referencing for beginners. --ColinFine (talk) 18:57, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Removing "unreferenced stub" tag?

I've been working on the Schrodinger-Newton equations entry, and I would like to remove the "unreferenced stubs" template since I've added quite a bit (although still more work is needed!)...but I don't know if I've done enough to warrant removing the template.

This page is for questions about editing Wikipedia. Please consider asking this question at the Reference desk. They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. You could always try searching Wikipedia for an article related to the topic you want to know more about. I hope this helps.. But, Wikipedia cannot give medical advice. The article on Hepatitis might answer your question, though. RudolfRed (talk) 17:23, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

how do I create a user box?

I have tried to but I still can't understand how, even by reading the tutorials. sophie (talk) 17:40, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It depends on what exactly you wish to do. Do you want to make a custom userbox to put on your own page only? That can be done by placing a modified form of Userbox right on your userpage. If that's the case, perhaps you can describe what you're going for and we can suggest how to do it using the markup described at Template:Userbox. BigNate37(T) 18:44, 9 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
There are plenty of userboxes available. Also, it depends where you want them positioned.

What does the olympic symbol next to a listed athlete mean?

Uploading a photograph

In our family archives, we have a photograph from 1934 (est.) that seems relevant to the article on John Marre ( John Marre ). We have this photograph because my father was a member of the team. He is included in the photo. Insofar as we are aware, all members of that team, and likely the photographer as well, are deceased. Also, insofar as we are aware, the photograph was never published. It was just a team photo, that my father kept with his personal papers up until his death in 1978. As his children, we are the owners. Can this legally be uploaded, and then inserted into the article indicated above? Thank you.Rgregory6 (talk) 03:41, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, you can upload it, but first you have to donate the copyright so it is under our licenses. See WP:Donating copyrighted materials to do so. FloBo A boat that can float! (watch me float!) 05:33, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The copyright is owned by the photographer or his heirs, not the owner of a copy of the photo. You need permission from the copyright owner to upload it. Rmhermen (talk) 16:05, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
May I suggest that we let the discussion continue at Commons Help Desk? – ukexpat (talk) 16:22, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Either location is fine with me: what it boils down to is that there appears not to be a hard and fast rule in place. If "the copyright is owned by the photographer or his (sic) heirs," and if that form of ownership (however "ownership" is explicated here) is crucial, then there is nothing to discuss. But the situation is as I describe it above: approx. 80 years old, no evidence that it was ever published, no information concerning the photographer or the circumstances under which the photo was taken (e.g. perhaps the photograph was purchased from the photographer), etc. We have no way of knowing some of the relevant facts. So, in a case like this, for wikipedia, who adjudicates?Rgregory6 (talk) 17:44, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The main problem here is that the photo appears to be unpublished, which tends to give it longer copyright protection in the United States. Had it been published, it would be much more likely that the photo already would be in the public domain, but as an unpublished photo, there is not really any chance that the copyright has expired. Also see WP:NFCC#4: fair use on English Wikipedia is not applicable unless you can prove that the photo has been published or displayed publicly. There are also other requirements for fair use and I'm not sure how you were planning to use the photo. The intended use of the photo might also fail fair use rules for some other reason. --Stefan2 (talk) 19:24, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sorry, but I feel that we don't have sufficient information in order to keep this image, so I have proposed it for deletion: Commons:Commons:Deletion requests/File:John Marre's Soccer Team Circa 1934.pdf. --Stefan2 (talk) 20:01, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I had uploaded a derivative (rotated) version before I read this. That will fail permission as well. Finavon (talk) 20:12, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Intended use is and has only been addition to the already existing article on John Marre, an article which is exceedingly slim and lacking in support, from any quarter. Yes, I acknowledge that I cannot prove it has never been published, although it is a reasonable inference that team photos, which this clearly is, were at some point in time, displayed publicly. From my reading of wikipedia, I doubt that you have proper evidence for most of the photos on display; you take the word of the person who submits them, make a few reasonable inferences, and probably wait to see whether any challenges are forthcoming. For this relatively obscure little corner of the universe, concerning people long dead, to say that, yes, it was publicly displayed in the early 1930s and that no one holds the copyright are both extremely reasonable inferences. Assuming the truth of both of these inferences, and the likelihood that very few wikipedia images are immue to challenge, what's the problem?Rgregory6 (talk) 22:23, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay here's the problem, the person certainly sounds like he should be notable, however no online sources are coming up for him beyond a brief mention about his appearances in various panels or in unreliable sources. It's complicated by the fact that he shares his name with a popular TV character played by an actor subjected to online rumours about his sexuality, but even taking that away from the searches, nothing comes up. It's quite possible that he gets some kind of in depth coverage in an offline source such as a newspaper, however you'd need to search for that and add it to the article. Pertaining to the United States of America page.

If I may be so humble as to suggest, that someone change the model of the American writer from Jack Kerouac to John Steinbeck. I am suggesting this, not because of my opinion; Jack Kerouac was a fantastic writer. Yet, he is already listed in the front page for notable French Canadians. It just seems a bit repetitive, when someone who isn't mentioned on the list of notable writers for the United States is John Steinbeck. Who we all know contributed greatly to depression-era literature. [1] [2] — Preceding unsigned comment added by 24.56.3.109 (talk) 07:43, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Jack Kerouac and John Steinbeck are each mentioned in hundreds of Wikipedia articles. Steinbeck is mentioned more than Kerouac in American literature. I don't see the relevance of Kerouac's mention in French Canadian to the choice of photo in United States#Literature, philosophy, and the arts. Allowing the PLAY on words within Wiki

Unfortunately, the author of this message is unskilled in the art editing Wikipedia. I also do not hold advanced knowledge of the proper definitions and terms used to interact within the wonderful world of Wikipedia.

I humbly ask that a person with more Wiki skill / knowledge read the following and take up the cause to differentiate between a misrepresented play on two words. The flaw contained within this particular Wiki reference was (it appears) initiated and created by an auto bot / spider relying on meta tags of description / key words. A real person of character, common sense and reasoning needs to contest this reference by editing it (within Wiki) in the correct manner. That person who takes up this cause will be assisting / helping to define the true definition of purpose and employment for over 100,000 (actual people) 'appraisers across the United States.

May we start with the Wiki Link:

Brevard Property Appraiser (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

Then continue to the definition(s) of (and play-on) two particular words (assessor) vs. (appraiser)

(def) assessor: 1-The head of an assessment agency: sometimes used collectively to refer to all administrators of the assessment function. 2-One who discovers, lists, and values real property for ad valorem taxation.

(def) appraiser: One who is expected to perform valuation services (typically on a fee basis) competently and in a manner that is independent, impartial and objective.

The Dictionary of Real Estate Appraisal – Appraisal Institute: ISBN 0-922154-72-4

OBJECTION to Wiki Reference: The person described in the Wiki reference has held a long-term political office in Brevard County, FL. (This appointment has a very good chance of changing in the upcoming election (fall of 2012). For ongoing years, with the help of the manifestation of / improvements of the internet, the continued mis-use / misrepresentation of the word appraiser has been used as a public relations prop to downplay political exposure and a supposition of integrity. This misrepresentation by the tax assessor (actually calling himself an appraiser) allows political gain and helps to remove the negative edge from and desensitizes the stigma and reputation that tax assessors / collectors have had since the Holy Bible was written.

Book of Luke – Tax Collector

Officially, the specific office held is a locally elected office under Florida Statues provided by The Florida Legislature through The Florida Department of Revenue (governing body). In Florida there are some 67 counties, each with its own tax assessor. In contrast, by definition & distinction, there are some 1000-3000+/- appraisers for every tax assessor across the U.S. Over the years, the tax assessor in Brevard County, FL has very effectively blurred and amplified the use of the word (appraiser) and effectively incorporated the word (appraiser) into a personal (office) advantage. The continuation of this misrepresentation allows convoluted confusion to the average reader / user attempting to differentiate definitions between an assessor and an appraiser.

This may lead to a false perception / understanding (mislead the reader / user), allowing the office of the tax assessor to hold a condescending position over any / all fee appraisers in a conjectural manner. The tax assessor is not the chief nor the head appraiser within any use of, or stretch of the term.

Please refer to another Wiki reference which explains an appraiser responsibility in much greater detail. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real_estate_appraisal

In reality, tax assessing is a science evolving around advanced / improved computer (mathematical / statistical) technology to assign a tax(able) value to each and every tax(ed) parcel of real estate. All tax assessment activity is dictated by the individual (states) departments of revenue. In other words, the focus is revenue.

In contrast, appraising is an art, officially utilizing at least one of three valuation techniques, typically arriving at / estimating a value based on real time (real estate) market fluxuations. An appraiser considers a value by drilling deep into the individual facts / documentation / support of an individual property and should most certainly (under moral guidelines) consider if the market is currently being driven by liquidation type sales vs. arms length transactions (a notating of the (real time data generated - up / down curvature (fluxuations) within the marketplace). An appraiser also considers many other opposite aspects / idiosyncrasies of the subject property in contrast to a tax assessors intent dictated by taxation authority.

Differentiating between definition / intent and purpose is very important because as mentioned, the tax assessor (formally submits) to a department of revenue, the tax appraiser submits to the Uniformed Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP).

Appraisal Institute - USPAP

A (fee) appraiser changes perspective 365 days a year vs. the tax assessor bases annual tax valuation on one day a year (Jan 1st). As is evident, valuation for taxation purposes is for a different reason and intent than valuation based on a current data processing within the real estate marketplace.

Once again, the author humbly requests that the reader of this explanation, please consider the mental task and this on-point distinction (a brief version of the essential meaning of something) and the corresponding distinction (between these 2 words).

It is respectfully requested that such distinction and conclusion be made to correct the Wiki reference referred to, or such reference should be stricken from online publication. A much more defined definition needs to be in place to adequately inform the reader / user.

Thank You (whoever you are) in advance for your time / effort / consideration and research into this politically contrived deviation. Your mental awareness is appreciated and respected by accepting the mental challenge to help set the record straight within the very important world of Wikiukexpat (talk) 13:09, 10 August 2012 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.88.98.211 (talk) 12:16, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is all a bit WP:TLDR I am afraid, but in any event, dictionary definitions aside, the office is called "Appraiser" (see https://www.brevardpropertyappraiser.com/mainhtml/appraiser_job.asp00), so there is not much we can do about that. As for the Brevard Property Appraiser article, I don't think that the subject is notable enough for its own article so I have redirected it to Brevard County, Florida#Elected officials. --ukexpat (talk) 13:09, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Weird unified login problem

I've been a it.wikipedia.org user since 2006. Today I was about to edit an entry in en.wikipedia.org but I realized my username was not registered in it. I read the unified login page (http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Unified_login) and realized the reason is that my subscription to The Wikimedia Foundation was done before 2008. I therefore tried to complete the procedure to use my account in the other websites of The Wikimedia Foundation: it succeeded for everything but the en.wikipedia.org site.

I thought it's because some other user subscribed with the same name before 2008, and that actually seems to be true, but I also think that such a user is not active anymore; I'm thinking this because before realizing that another user could have the same username, I tried to reset the password (thinking I simply forgot it) but the procedure wouldn't work saying that a user with such a name doesn't exist.

So, if I got it right, there has been a user in en.wikipedia.org with the same username i have in it.wikipedia.org but he/she unsubscribed (resetting the password says there's not this user) and now I cannot synchronize the 2 accounts because I'm somehow stucked in this kind of limbo :)

Can anybody confirm my thoughts are true and, if so, is there any way to fix my problem?

Oh, the username is Smartdust

Cheers

If you feel that there is too much to keep up with, you can request page protection at WP:RFPP. Otherwise, you'll have to just warn the IP with a WP:VANDALISM template on their talk page. Dismas|(talk) 18:02, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is it legitimate to edit others' sandbox? + A question about AFC

1. Up to what limit can I edit another user's sandbox to help them while they are preparing an article using it.
2. Can you please answer this question?

Thank you ···Vanischenu「m/Talk」 16:52, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

1. There is no formal limit. The wishes of the user whose sandbox you are editing should pertain. While no user "owns" a page, there is much leeway given to sandbox and other user pages. So, if the user welcome help, you are as free to do so as you would be on any article; if the user does not want help, I would be inclined to back off until the sandbox page is moved to article space. You can always make suggestions, however. Bielle (talk) 17:02, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I have edited sandbox articles before without the permission of the user but it is generally because they are doing something in it that is affecting articles or the project in general outside of their sandbox. For instance, and this is probably the most wide spread offense, when the user puts their sandbox into a category that is meant for regular articles. I will generally comment out the categories and alert the user on their talk page. Dismas|(talk) 18:17, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Agree, though rather than commenting out such categories, I'd suggest just inserting a colon. That way there's at least a one-way clicable linkage (to the category page from the sandboxed article). Once moved to mainspace it's a simple matter to remove the colons.LeadSongDog come howl! 18:36, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

"Celtic Cross-Roads", 2003 - Martyn Richards

The above-named Paper was written at the request of the then Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, then a department of Coventry City Council. It was written as part of a Consultation, deemed timely as The Lunt 'Roman' Fort at Baginton was closed for several months due to wear and tear requiring repairs before it could be safely re-opened to the public.

Others included in the Consultation were Keevill Heritage and, as I was informed, English Heritage. My Paper included research which recorded the Celtic Corieltauvi people migrating from Leicester, the Celtic Cornovii from their capital at Viriconium, the Celtic Dobunni from Corinium and the Celtic Catuvellauni as coming from the south-east, converging towards Covan-tre, thus the title "Celtic Cross-Roads".

Copies of this Paper were distributed by me to The Herbert Art Gallery & Museum, Coventry, The British Library System including its Legal Deposit Office in Wetherby, 2003/2004, the then City Centre Company in Coventry - CV-One - and a number of other recipients.

I have the name of the Officer at The Herbert who asked me to write the Paper in my research packet.

- Martyn Richards

PS. Acknowledgements to helpers, written or oral, were included in the text.

BBC trying to sensationalise Wikipedia

The BBC website [23] is trying to sensationalise the fact that Mitt Romney's article has been semi-protected - without mentioning that Barack Obama's article has the same level of protection - where should this be reported? - Arjayay (talk) 19:08, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

They do it all the time. We can't and shouldn't report it anywhere. Ryan Vesey 19:10, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If that is policy, can you point me to where it says so? - Arjayay (talk) 19:17, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I'm unaware of a policy. Wikipedia has no control over external content. Ryan Vesey 19:31, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And if we start making a mountain out of a molehill, they will think that there really is something to it. So I suggest that we comment on it no further.--ukexpat (talk) 19:38, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Good point. In fact, I didn't think the article was terrible or overly sensational. Ryan Vesey 19:42, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, the BBC story apparently refers to the August 7 episode mentioned at Vandalism on Wikipedia#Stephen Colbert. Some articles were indeed semi-protected because of that but Mitt Romney was already semi-protected so nothing changed there. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:59, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
WP:NOTNEWS has a bit of relevance. Though only tangentially. Dismas|(talk) 20:02, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

OK I suggest we let this be otherwise it is in danger of becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.--ukexpat (talk) 20:06, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I have uploaded a picture but can not place it where I want.

This is the url I want to edit.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mansfield,_Ohio

I uploaded the file. This is the url of the photo I want to add to above.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/c/c4/Shirley_Schluter_SAFETY_TOWN_Class_of_1937.jpg

I want a thumbnail to the right of the text below SAFETY TOWN. The description should read.

Shirley (Yoakam) Schluter was among the first Safety Town graduates in 1937.

I have permission from the subjects daughter to use the photo in the Mansfield, Ohio wiki.

I am really lost. Could someone move the picture for me?

TheMalabarFlash (talk) 21:47, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. The picture is here File:Shirley Schluter SAFETY TOWN Class of 1937.jpg. If you edit the article and add this text , then the image will appear. More help on the parameters you can use to change the way the image is displayed can be found here WP:EIS QU TalkQu 22:17, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Original research?

Could someone please check if this article contains WP:OP? It's Giovanni di Giovanni. I actually tried to re-write it, but the possibilities are limited, since article mostly depents on one reference (an Oxford University Press book). 178.223.223.170 (talk) 23:20, 10 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
